UNN Cut-Off Mark for Metallurgical and Materials Engineering 2027/2028: Admission Breakdown

UNN Cut-Off Mark for Metallurgical and Materials Engineering 2027/2028: Admission Breakdown
UNN’s 2026/2027 cut off mark for Metallurgical and Materials Engineering is 160 to apply, with no departmental figure published. Subjects, O’level rules, a worked aggregate, target score and course history.

The UNN cut off mark for Metallurgical and Materials Engineering in 2026/2027 is 160 in the UTME. That is the minimum the University of Nigeria, Nsukka set for its 2026/2027 screening, and it covers every course for candidates who chose UNN first. UNN has not published a departmental cut-off for Metallurgical and Materials Engineering for 2026/2027 or 2025/2026, and no blog has even estimated one.

2027/2028 update: UNN cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

You will also see 200 quoted. That is the minimum UNN declared at the JAMB 2026 policy meeting, as reported by Vanguard and News Central. UNN accepts screening applications from 160, but its declared benchmark at that meeting was 200, and competitive courses admit far above both. Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (often shortened to Met Mat) tends to be less crowded than Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, so I would treat 210 to 220 as a sensible target. Here is the full admission breakdown.

Deadline warning

UNN’s 2026/2027 screening closed at midnight on 5 August 2026, and JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the last day for public universities to conclude admissions. If UNN offers you a place on CAPS, you have four weeks to accept it or you risk losing it.

The department only began teaching in October 2007, and UNN has never published course-by-course cut-offs for it on its own channels as far as I could find. Treat any exact “Met Mat cut-off” you see online with suspicion unless it names a UNN document.

JAMB subject combination and O’level for Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure for Metallurgical and Material Engineering shows no UNN-specific remark, so the table below gives JAMB’s usual requirements for this course. UNN’s other engineering courses add a two-sitting limit and ask Direct Entry candidates for all three science A’levels, so assume the same until JAMB’s e-brochure says otherwise.

RequirementMetallurgical and Materials Engineering (JAMB’s usual requirement)
UTME subjectsUse of English, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics
O’levelFive credits including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, plus one other science subject
Number of sittingsPlan for not more than two, as with UNN’s other engineering courses
Direct EntryA’level passes in any two of Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry (general brochure); expect UNN to ask for all three
Minimum age16 by 30 September 2026

Chemistry matters more here than in most engineering courses, because much of the programme deals with how metals, ceramics and polymers behave. A good grade in Chemistry helps you in both the aggregate and the classroom.

How UNN screening works, with a worked aggregate

UNN does not publish the formula it uses to rank candidates, and its 2026/2027 notice describes an online registration with no written test, test date or test format. So any aggregate you see online for Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, including the one below, is a reconstruction.

The method most often reported by Nigerian education blogs gives UTME 60% and O’level 40%. Your four core O’level grades are converted to points (A1 = 100, B2 = 90, B3 = 80, C4 = 70, C5 = 60, C6 = 50) and added up, so the O’level part is out of 400, the same scale as JAMB. The final figure is UTME x 0.6 plus O’level points x 0.4. This is a commonly used blog method, not an official UNN formula. Use it only to compare yourself with other applicants.

Worked example

Ifeanyi scored 214 in the 2026 UTME. His WAEC grades were English C4, Mathematics B2, Physics C5 and Chemistry B3.

StepWorkingResult
O’level points70 (C4) + 90 (B2) + 60 (C5) + 80 (B3)300
UTME share214 x 0.6128.4
O’level share300 x 0.4120
Aggregate (blog method)128.4 + 120248.4 out of 400

For a course with lower demand, 248.4 on this method would usually put Ifeanyi in a fair position. If he had made B3 in Physics instead of C5, his O’level points would rise to 320 and his aggregate to 256.4.

Admission odds and the score to aim for

Met Mat at UNN is a smaller department. Its own history says it started with 42 foundation students and that its staff now number 16. Courses like this often receive candidates through CAPS transfers after they miss a more crowded engineering course, so if Met Mat is your genuine first choice, a solid score gives you a reasonable chance.

Federal universities fill places using the national admission guideline, which is widely reported as 45% on merit, 35% for catchment states and 20% for educationally less developed states (ELDS). UNN has not published its own split, its catchment list or an ELDS list. UNN’s catchment is generally understood to be the South-East states; confirm on JAMB CAPS or with the UNN admissions office before you rely on it.

In practice, the merit slots go first to the highest scores in the whole applicant pool for the course, whatever their state. The catchment and ELDS slots then let candidates from those states in with somewhat lower scores. Your state of origin on your JAMB profile is the one that counts.

Target scores (consultant advice)

2026 UTME scoreOutlook for Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at UNN
160 to 189Eligible; possible only with good O’level grades and a catchment or ELDS advantage
190 to 209A fair chance with good O’level grades
210 and aboveA sensible target

These bands are my estimate, not UNN data. The demand for a course can change from year to year.

How to apply: step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: before UTME registration, text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example, NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with a 10-character profile code that you take to a CBT centre.
  2. Choose UNN as first choice and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering as the course: UNN only screened 2026 candidates who picked it as first choice. Use the exact course name shown on the JAMB e-brochure.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: UNN asked candidates to put their WAEC or NECO results on JAMB CAPS and on the UNN portal by 5 August 2026. You can do the CAPS upload at a JAMB office or accredited CBT centre. Awaiting results were not accepted.
  4. Register on the UNN portal: go to unn.edu.ng, click UNN Portal (unnportal.unn.edu.ng), then Prospective Students and the 2026/2027 screening form. Enter your JAMB registration number, generate the invoice and pay N5,300 on Remita at any commercial bank.
  5. Complete the form: come back, enter your JAMB number again, fill your personal details and O’level centre and exam numbers, and upload each document under 100KB: birth certificate, LGA identification, testimonial, First School Leaving Certificate, JAMB result slip and your O’level result (two if you used two sittings). Check your date of birth before you submit, because UNN does not let you change it later. Print the acknowledgement slip.
  6. Check and accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, click Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. Accept the offer if the course is right, then print your JAMB admission letter.
  7. Pay UNN’s acceptance fee: blogs report it as N25,000, but UNN has not published the 2026/2027 amount in any notice I could open. Pay only through the UNN portal, then follow the clearance instructions.

About Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at UNN

UNN’s Senate approved the department at its 316th meeting on 1 February 2006. Teaching started in October 2007 with 42 foundation students and four staff. NUC checked the department’s resources in a visit from 2 to 8 December 2007 and gave approval on 15 April 2008. It is one of nine departments in the Faculty of Engineering at Nsukka and awards a B.Eng. in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, a five-year programme like the faculty’s other B.Eng. degrees.

The department describes the field as the science and engineering of metals, ceramics and polymers. Its programme combines metallurgical, ceramic and polymer engineering with newer materials processing methods. Core areas it lists include:

  • Thermodynamics and kinetics
  • Electron theory of materials and phase systems
  • Heat and mass transfer
  • Mechanics of solids and fluids
  • Design and manufacturing processes
  • Engineering law and management

You also do SIWES industrial training, as in every Nigerian B.Eng. programme, and a final-year project.

Accreditation

In COREN’s visit to UNN in May 2018, “Met Mat Engineering” scored 75% and the team recommended full accreditation. The report notes that the Council makes the final decision.

Careers

Graduates work in steel and aluminium plants, foundries, oil and gas (corrosion and pipeline integrity), mining and mineral processing, manufacturing, quality control and failure analysis, and research. Materials engineering also leads into fields like polymers, ceramics and composites.

If you want something close, compare Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering. On the science side, Pure and Industrial Chemistry and Geology share a lot with materials work. For Chemistry revision, our JAMB Chemistry syllabus guide is a good start.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving Met Mat off the radar: many strong candidates never look at it and end up in no engineering course at all.
  • Assuming low demand means any score works: the department is small, and places still go by rank.
  • Weak Chemistry: it counts in the UTME, in the O’level points and in the course.
  • Missing the O’level upload: results had to be on CAPS and the UNN portal by 5 August 2026.
  • Ignoring CAPS after the list is out: accept within four weeks and print your admission letter.
