The Caritas University Political Science cut-off mark is 150 in the UTME in practice. Caritas’s admissions page invites candidates with 140 and above, but JAMB’s 2026 minimum for every university is 150, and no admission below it can go through CAPS. Caritas has not published a departmental figure for Political Science, and it does not hold a written Post-UTME test.
2027/2028 update: Caritas University cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Political Science is on JAMB’s Caritas course list as Political Science and on Caritas’s 2026/2027 list in the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences. JAMB’s brochure entry for the course has no Caritas remark, so the general lines apply, but Caritas’s own faculty rule adds Mathematics and Economics to the O’level. The NUC’s 1990 to 2025 results show the programme at Full accreditation with a maturity date of 2028. This guide covers the subjects, the O’level trap, Direct Entry, screening, a safe target score and the CAPS steps, and it compares Caritas with ESUT and UNN.

Caritas Political Science cut-off mark history
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 140 and above | Caritas’s stated minimum for all applicants | Official Caritas admissions page, read 30 October 2026 |
| 2026/2027 | 150 | JAMB minimum for all universities | Official (JAMB policy meeting, 11 May 2026) |
| 2025/2026 (as titled) | 140 | Caritas admission notice signed by the Registrar, M. I. Onwuka | Official, but the text is carried over from older years |
| 2025/2026 | 150 | JAMB minimum for universities | Reported by Nairametrics, 8 July 2025 |
The notice titled for 2025/2026 still refers to the “2019 JAMB UTME” and a closing date of 15 February 2025, so it is old text that Caritas keeps reposting. I use it only for two points that have stayed constant: the 140 figure and the statement that there is no Post-UTME screening test. Blogs such as O3schools (January 2026) and Studentship repeat both points.
Political Science is not named in either Caritas document. The 140 is a university-wide figure, and JAMB’s 150 has replaced it for any admission that has to pass through CAPS.
Score warning
Caritas’s admissions page still says candidates with 140 and above can apply. JAMB’s 2026 minimum for every university is 150, and JAMB has said admissions outside CAPS are illegal, so a UTME score from 140 to 149 cannot give you a valid Caritas admission. Do not pay any agent who promises to “process” one.
Safe target score for Political Science at Caritas (my advice)
Political Science is one of the larger social science courses across Nigeria, and in Enugu the public universities set it above their general minimum. ESUT, for example, put it in its 180 band for 2026/2027. Caritas works differently: it advertises one figure for everyone and holds no written test, so your subjects and O’level count for as much as your score. I still set a target above the floor so you have room if Caritas ranks applicants and so you can keep a public university as a backup.
| Your UTME score | My read for Caritas Political Science |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible through UTME this session; look at Direct Entry or JUPEB |
| 150 to 169 | Eligible; apply early and have your O’level on CAPS |
| 170 to 199 | Comfortable for Caritas |
| 200 and above | Strong; ESUT (180) and UNN (160 to apply) are also within reach |
My target for a 2027 candidate is 170 or more.
UTME subject combination and O’level for Political Science at Caritas
JAMB’s Political Science entry lists special remarks for many universities, including UNN, but none for Caritas. That leaves you with JAMB’s general lines plus whatever Caritas requires on its own pages.
| Requirement | JAMB general line | What Caritas adds |
|---|---|---|
| UTME | Government or History plus two other Social Science or Arts subjects | Nothing; use the general line |
| O’level | Five credits in Government or History, English Language and three other subjects, with a pass in Mathematics | Faculty list: English, Mathematics, Economics and any other two subjects |
| Direct Entry | Two A-level passes including Government or History | Nothing published |
Building a UTME combination that works
Government is the safest anchor, because almost every university that offers Political Science accepts it, while a few treat History differently. With Government fixed, choose two from Economics, Literature in English, Christian Religious Studies, History or Geography. I would make Economics one of them. Caritas’s faculty list puts Economics at the core of its O’level requirement, and having it in the UTME too keeps Public Administration and Economics-based courses open if you later need a change of course.
Some strong examples: Government, Economics and Literature in English; Government, Economics and CRS; Government, History and Economics. A combination such as Government, Biology and Geography may satisfy JAMB’s broad wording, but it leaves you without Economics at UTME level and with fewer fallback courses.
The O’level trap: Economics and Mathematics
JAMB’s general line for Political Science asks only for a pass in Mathematics and does not name Economics. Many candidates read that line and stop there. Caritas’s own requirement for the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences names English, Mathematics and Economics, and Caritas’s general rule asks every candidate for credits in English and Mathematics. So for Caritas you should have these five credits, in not more than two sittings:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Economics
- Government (or History)
- One more subject, such as Literature in English, CRS, Civic Education, Geography or Commerce
WAEC, NECO and NABTEB results can be combined, up to two sittings. If you have a D7 in Mathematics, some other universities accept that for Political Science, but Caritas has not published any such exception. Ask the admissions office in writing before you rely on it.
Direct Entry
JAMB’s general Direct Entry line asks for two A-level passes including Government or History. IJMB and JUPEB results are normally treated as A-level equivalents, and Caritas runs its own JUPEB programme for 2026/2027. JAMB’s brochure lists no Caritas remark for ND or NCE holders in Political Science. Note that Caritas’s remark for Public Administration does accept an ND in Political Science, which suggests the university is open to diploma holders in this field, but ask before you register on JAMB’s Direct Entry portal.
How Caritas screens Political Science applicants
| Detail | What is known for 2026/2027 |
|---|---|
| Advert | “Admission ongoing for 2026/2027 session” on the Caritas admissions page |
| Who can apply | Candidates with 140 and above, whether or not Caritas was their first choice (150 is the real floor) |
| Written Post-UTME test | None, according to Caritas’s admission notice |
| Awaiting result | Allowed if the result is available by resumption |
| Form fee, closing date, aggregate formula | Not published on the pages read |
| Student loan | The admissions page links to the NELFUND portal (portal.nelf.gov.ng); check your own eligibility there |
| JAMB deadline for private universities (2026/2027) | 30 November 2026 |
The no-test statement comes from a notice Caritas has reposted with old dates, so take it as long-standing practice and watch the admissions page for any 2027/2028 change.
Worked example
These figures are illustrative. Caritas publishes no aggregate, so the checks are JAMB’s floor, my target and the O’level.
Obinna scored 181 with Government, Economics and CRS. His NECO result has C5 in English, C6 in Mathematics, B3 in Government, C4 in Economics and B2 in CRS.
- JAMB floor: 181 minus 150 = 31. Eligible.
- Against my target: 181 minus 170 = 11. Comfortable.
- UTME subjects: Government plus two Social Science or Arts subjects. Correct.
- O’level: credits in English, Mathematics, Economics and Government, with CRS as the fifth. He meets Caritas’s faculty list.
- Next step: apply, upload his result to CAPS and accept the offer quickly.
Now take Adaeze, who scored 168 with Government, Literature and CRS. Her WAEC result has credits in English, Mathematics, Government, Literature and CRS, but only a pass in Economics. JAMB’s general line is satisfied, yet Caritas’s faculty list names Economics. She should either add an Economics credit from a second sitting (NECO in June is the usual option) or confirm in writing that Caritas will waive it for Political Science.
Admission odds and advice
- Economics is the hidden requirement: JAMB’s line does not name it, but Caritas’s faculty list does.
- Put Caritas first on JAMB: it accepts candidates who did not, but CAPS needs a change of institution before the offer can move.
- Know the 2026/2027 date: JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the admission deadline for private universities in the current session.
- Keep a backup: with 180 or more, ESUT is also an option; with 160 or more, you can apply to UNN for screening.
Political Science at other Enugu universities
| University | Minimum UTME score (2026/2027) | Our guide |
|---|---|---|
| Caritas University, Amorji-Nike | 150 (JAMB floor; Caritas says 140) | This page |
| UNN, Nsukka | 160 to apply for screening | UNN Political Science cut-off mark |
| ESUT, Agbani | 180 | ESUT Political Science cut-off mark |
UNN’s remark accepts a pass in Mathematics and requires Government, and it does not accept History in its place. Check each university’s rule before you copy your plan from one to another.
How to apply for Political Science at Caritas, step by step
- Profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line registered with your NIN, then use the code to register.
- UTME registration: choose Caritas University and “Political Science”, and write Use of English, Government and two other Social Science or Arts subjects (Economics is a wise choice).
- O’level on CAPS: upload your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result at a JAMB-accredited centre as soon as it is out. CAPS cannot show you to Caritas without it.
- Caritas application: go to the admissions page on caritasuni.edu.ng, use the application link or the “Contact admissions” option, and apply for Political Science. Caritas has not published the 2026/2027 form price, so pay only the amount the official portal shows and keep the receipt.
- Screening: there is no written Post-UTME test on record. Expect Caritas to check your UTME score, subjects and O’level, and bring originals if you are called for document screening.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept the offer once it appears. Our JAMB CAPS guide shows every screen.
- Acceptance and school fees: Caritas says its fees were revised but publishes no amounts. Pay only into the account on your official Caritas invoice, then print your JAMB admission letter.
Studying Political Science at Caritas University
Accreditation
The NUC’s Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025 publication (September 2026) lists Political Science under Caritas with results reading Full, Interim, Interim, Denied, Full and Full, and a maturity date of 2028. The current position is Full. The history includes one Denied result, which the department has since cleared with two Full results in a row. A 2027 entrant should expect the next visit around the middle of the degree, so ask for the outcome when it is released. I found no separate NUC report page for this programme.
Degree, duration and what you study
Caritas awards a B.Sc. Political Science. The degree normally runs four years from 100 level, and Caritas has not published a different length. A typical sequence looks like this:
- 100 level: introduction to political science, Nigerian government, introductory economics, sociology, logic and general studies courses.
- 200 level: political theory, constitutional development in Nigeria, introduction to international relations, public administration and research methods.
- 300 level: comparative politics, political behaviour, local government, foreign policy analysis, statistics for social sciences and political economy.
- 400 level: contemporary political analysis, African politics, public policy, theories of development and a final-year project.
If you are interested in international affairs, Political Science is the closest course to International Relations that is on JAMB’s Caritas list. Our page on International Relations at Caritas explains why that matters.
Careers
Political Science graduates go into the civil service, legislative offices and political parties, journalism and public affairs, NGOs and election monitoring, research and policy think tanks, and teaching. Many use the degree as a base for law (as a second degree), a master’s in international relations or public policy, or the foreign service examinations. The degree does not lead to a professional licence on its own.

Mistakes that cost Political Science applicants a Caritas place
- Relying on 140: JAMB’s 150 is the floor for CAPS.
- Skipping Economics at O’level: Caritas’s faculty list names it.
- Mathematics below credit: JAMB’s line says pass, but Caritas asks every candidate for a credit.
- Registering without Government or History: one of the two must be in your UTME.
- Not uploading O’level to CAPS: no upload, no offer.
Caritas Political Science cut-off mark: frequently asked questions
What is the cut-off mark for Political Science at Caritas University? Use 150, JAMB’s 2026 minimum for universities. Caritas’s website still says 140, which is below that floor, and the university has not published a departmental figure.
Do I need Economics to study Political Science at Caritas? At O’level, yes in practice. JAMB’s general line does not name it, but Caritas’s Faculty of Management and Social Sciences lists English, Mathematics and Economics as core credits.
Can I use History instead of Government for Caritas Political Science? JAMB’s general line accepts Government or History and has no Caritas remark that removes History. Government is still the safer choice because it fits more universities.
Is Political Science at Caritas University accredited? Yes. The NUC’s 1990 to 2025 results list it as Full with a maturity date of 2028.
Sources and updates
The 150 minimum, the 30 November 2026 deadline for private universities and the warning that admissions outside CAPS are illegal come from JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026). The 2025 minimum is from Nairametrics (8 July 2025). Caritas’s 140 figure, the statement that first-choice and other candidates may apply, the awaiting-result rule and the faculty O’level lists come from the Caritas University admissions page, read on 30 October 2026. The no-test statement comes from Caritas’s admission notice signed by the Registrar, M. I. Onwuka, with O3schools and Studentship as secondary confirmation. The course name comes from Myschool’s reprint of JAMB’s Caritas course list and the subject rules from the brochure entry for Political Science, which has no Caritas remark, both checked on 30 October 2026. Accreditation is from the NUC’s Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025 (September 2026). The ESUT and UNN figures come from their 2026/2027 notices covered in our linked guides. Safe target scores and worked examples are my own advice, not Caritas figures. Checked on 30 October 2026; this page will be updated when Caritas or JAMB publishes 2027/2028 figures.
