UNMC Online MSN 2027: Ranking, Requirements, Tuition and Can International Nurses Apply?

UNMC Online MSN 2027: Ranking, Requirements, Tuition and Can International Nurses Apply?
UNMC’s online MSN is No. 41 in the U.S. News 2026 online nursing master’s rankings. See its six specialties, $746 to $1,348 per credit tuition, 2027 deadlines and what foreign-educated nurses need, including a U.S. RN licence before clinicals.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) online MSN is ranked No. 41 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs, out of more than 200 programmes. It is a nurse practitioner heavy degree: five of its six MSN specialties lead to NP certification, and distance students can usually do clinicals near home. If you are a nurse in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or anywhere outside the U.S., the short answer is conditional. UNMC will look at a foreign-educated nurse’s application, but you must hold an RN licence in each U.S. state where you do clinical work before your clinical courses start, and UNMC’s announced student visa approvals cover its BSN, not the MSN.

For U.S.-based nurses, the UNMC online MSN requirements are straightforward: a BSN, a 3.0 nursing GPA, an unencumbered U.S. RN licence, one year of RN experience and no GRE. Tuition for 2026-27 is $746 per credit hour for Nebraska residents and $1,348 for non-residents. I checked every figure below on UNMC’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

UNMC online MSN ranking

UNMC’s newsroom reported on 27 January 2026 that its MSN ranked 41st among more than 200 programmes in the U.S. News 2026 Best Online Programs. UNMC says that is a climb of more than 30 places since its last appearance in the list. The release does not say whether the No. 41 spot is shared, and it gives no specialty rankings.

One point of confusion worth clearing up: UNMC in Omaha is the University of Nebraska system’s academic health science centre. It is a separate campus from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, even though UNMC’s College of Nursing also teaches at a Lincoln division.

UNMC online MSN specialties

UNMC’s MSN page lists six specialty tracks. All start in the fall and can be taken full time or part time.

SpecialtyRoleExperience UNMC wants before specialty clinicals
Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NPNurse practitionerOne year of acute care experience
Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)Nurse practitionerOne year of RN experience
Pediatric Primary Care NPNurse practitionerNot listed separately
Pediatric Primary and Acute Care NP (dual certification)Nurse practitionerOne year of inpatient or acute paediatric experience
Psychiatric Mental Health NP (PMHNP)Nurse practitionerOne year of psychiatric RN experience
Transformational Leadership in HealthcareNurse leader (non-NP)Not listed separately; an RN-to-MSN route exists

UNMC’s application page also lists a Pediatric Acute Care NP option, an MSN to DNP route that starts in May, and a post-graduate Emergency Nurse Practitioner certificate for nurses who are already certified FNPs. If you hold an ADN or diploma, the leadership track’s RN-to-MSN option has you take two bridge courses and finish with both a BSN and an MSN.

Format, length and clinicals

  • UNMC lists its campus options as Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney, Norfolk, Scottsbluff and “Distance”. You declare a home campus on the application.
  • Distance students may be able to complete clinical requirements near their home community, and the College helps arrange sites, schedules and preceptors.
  • The MSN takes three or four years from a BSN, on a plan of study agreed with your faculty advisor.
  • UNMC does not print total credits or clinical hours on the MSN pages I checked, and it does not say how many campus visits each track needs. Ask Graduate Student Services for the plan of study for your track.

Can international nurses apply to the UNMC online MSN?

Yes, you can apply, but you cannot start clinical courses until you are licensed in the U.S. state where those clinicals happen. Here is how UNMC’s rules play out for different readers.

Your situationCan you enrol? What UNMC says
Foreign-educated nurse living abroad, no U.S. licenceApplication possible; clinicals blocked until licensedForeign citizens without a U.S. licence must show the equivalent of a nursing bachelor’s degree, but every student needs an RN licence in each state of clinical practice before clinical courses
Wanting an F-1 student visa for the MSNNot shown as availableUNMC’s 2025 SEVP announcement covers the BSN at its Norfolk and Scottsbluff divisions; it does not mention the MSN
U.S. resident with an unencumbered RN licenceYes, if your state allows itUNMC says some states may bar it from admitting their residents, so out-of-state applicants should check with Student Services
Nebraska residentYesThe catalog gives admission preference to Nebraska residents

UNMC does not publish a statement about students who live outside the United States throughout the programme. Its licensure page also says graduates must meet each state’s own APRN rules, and it marks Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and four other territories as places where the APRN programmes do not meet requirements. Email graduatenursing@unmc.edu before you pay the application fee.

The route for a foreign-educated nurse

  1. Get your degree evaluated: UNMC says nursing degrees from outside the U.S. must be evaluated for equivalence to a U.S. nursing degree. State boards usually ask for their own credentials review, often through CGFNS (now TruMerit).
  2. Take an English test if needed: UNMC’s minimums are listed in the requirements section below. Your state board may set a different test or score for licensure.
  3. Pass the NCLEX-RN: you register through a U.S. state board of nursing. Nebraska belongs to the Nurse Licensure Compact, so a Nebraska multistate licence covers other compact states.
  4. Settle in a U.S. state: most nurses arrive on employer-sponsored immigrant visas. The MSN itself is not a visa route.
  5. Apply through NursingCAS: choose one UNMC specialty and declare your home campus.

UNMC online MSN requirements

These come from the College of Nursing’s graduate application page and the UNMC catalog policy on admission to the master’s degree.

  • A BSN from a programme accredited by CCNE, ACEN or NLN CNEA at the time you graduated.
  • A nursing GPA of 3.0 or higher in your most recent nursing degree. A GPA of 2.5 to 2.9 may lead to provisional admission.
  • An unencumbered nursing licence in one of the 50 U.S. states, plus an RN licence in every state where you do clinicals.
  • One year of relevant RN experience before specialty clinical courses (see the table above).
  • A resume or CV.
  • Official transcripts from every college attended, sent directly to NursingCAS, with your courses entered in NursingCAS Transcript Entry.
  • No GRE.

The pages I checked do not list references, a personal statement or an interview. NursingCAS can add programme questions, so read the UNMC programme page inside NursingCAS before you submit.

English test scores

TestUNMC minimum for the MSN
TOEFL iBT92 total
IELTS6.5 band
PTE59 overall
Duolingo English Test120 overall

Scores must be from the last two years. UNMC may waive the test if you finished your nursing degree at an accredited English-speaking university, and it reviews applicants from English-speaking countries individually. Nigerian, Ghanaian and Kenyan nurses taught in English should ask for that waiver in writing.

UNMC online MSN deadlines

UNMC admits on a rolling, first-come, first-qualified basis until each specialty fills, then keeps a waitlist. Applying early matters more here than at schools with a single review date.

UNMC prints these as recurring annual dates without a year; I have attached them to the next cycle (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens).

UNMC online MSN tuition and fees

UNMC’s 2026-27 cost of attendance sheet for MSN, DNP and post-master’s certificate students gives these rates.

Charge (2026-27)Nebraska residentNon-resident
Tuition per credit hour$746$1,348
Distributive learning fee per credit hour$27$27
Library fee per credit hour$8.25$8.25
Year budget on 12 credits, including living costs and insurance$40,080$47,300

The year budget assumes 6 credits in fall and 6 in spring. It includes $6,160 of fees billed to the student account (health insurance is $4,555 of that), plus allowances for books, clinical travel and nine months of living costs. UNMC does not publish total credits for each track on the pages I checked, so I cannot give an honest full-programme figure. Multiply your track’s credits by about $1,383 if you are a non-resident.

  • NursingCAS application fee: $90.
  • Enrolment deposit: $400 on acceptance, non-refundable, credited to first-semester tuition.

Costs not covered by tuition

  • Travel to clinical sites (UNMC budgets $1,050 a year) and any trips to a Nebraska campus.
  • Background check, abuse and neglect registry check, immunisations and BLS certification, all required after admission.
  • An RN licence in each state where you do clinicals.
  • Credential evaluation, English tests and NCLEX fees if you were educated abroad.
  • National NP certification exams after graduation (AANP, ANCC, PNCB or NCC, depending on track).

Scholarships and financial aid

Federal loans through FAFSA are only for U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens such as green-card holders. UNMC’s cost sheet assumes federal borrowing, and I found no scholarship on the MSN pages aimed at international online students. Employer tuition assistance from a U.S. hospital is the usual way working nurses fund this degree.

Accreditation and certification

The master’s programme is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). NP graduates are eligible to sit national certification exams through AANP, ANCC, PNCB or NCC. UNMC does not publish certification pass rates on its MSN page.

How to write your UNMC application documents

Because UNMC fills seats in order of qualified applications, your CV and any NursingCAS short answers have to show fit quickly. If the programme asks for a personal statement, build it like this:

  • Open with one patient group you have cared for and the gap you saw in their care.
  • Name the experience UNMC asks for in your track: acute care for AGACNP, psychiatric nursing for PMHNP, inpatient paediatrics for the dual track.
  • Say where you plan to do clinicals and whether you have a possible preceptor.
  • End with the community you want to serve after certification. UNMC’s catalog gives admission preference to Nebraska residents, so a Nebraska connection is worth stating.

For illustration only, an FNP applicant might open like this:

“On night shift in a 25-bed critical access hospital, I watched the same three diabetic patients return every month because the nearest primary care clinic was 70 miles away. I want to be the provider they can see before the next emergency.”

On your CV, list RN roles with unit type, bed numbers and dates, because UNMC counts experience by specialty population. If you need a reference later, our guide to recommendation letters with samples shows what a strong letter covers.

Common mistakes foreign-educated nurses make

  • Applying before licensure is in sight: UNMC will not let you into clinical courses without an RN licence in the clinical state.
  • Assuming the visa approval covers the MSN: the 2025 SEVP news was about the BSN.
  • Applying late in a rolling cycle: specialties close when full, which can happen before 1 April.
  • Counting general ward years for acute care or PMHNP: UNMC wants experience in the specialty population.
  • Not checking your state: some states bar UNMC from admitting their residents, and APRN rules differ by state.

Who should apply

UNMC fits licensed RNs in Nebraska and neighbouring states who want a well-priced NP degree, especially in paediatrics, where the dual primary and acute care track is uncommon. Nebraska residents pay $746 a credit.

If you are still abroad and working toward the NCLEX, treat UNMC as a goal for after you are licensed and living in a U.S. state. Non-residents paying $1,348 a credit should compare it with the options below.
