The Ohio State University online MSN is ranked No. 1 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs, and it is the most popular question we get from nurses abroad: can I study it from home? For most readers in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or anywhere outside the United States, the answer is no. Ohio State’s graduate admissions page for the online nursing master’s says plainly that residents outside the U.S. cannot take part in its distance learning programs, and the College of Nursing requires an active, unencumbered U.S. RN licence by 1 August of your start year.
If you already live and work as a licensed RN in a U.S. state where Ohio State is authorised, you can apply. The online tracks include Family Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, tuition is listed at $1,158.58 per credit hour (fees included), and the Round 1 deadline for autumn 2027 closed on 16 October 2026, so the remaining Ohio State online MSN deadline is Round 2 on 1 March 2027. Everything below was checked on Ohio State’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
Ohio State online MSN ranking
Ohio State News announced on 27 January 2026 that its online Master of Science in Nursing was ranked No. 1 in the nation in the U.S. News 2026 Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs. Duke University and the University of South Carolina both report No. 2 in the same edition, which makes Ohio State the sole holder of the top spot. Ohio State Online’s programme page also says its online Family Nurse Practitioner track is ranked No. 2 in the country by U.S. News.
A ranking tells you about faculty, student outcomes and support for online learners. It tells you nothing about whether you personally can enrol, so read the eligibility section before you get attached to the name.
Ohio State online MSN tracks
The College of Nursing runs one Master of Science in Nursing with several specialties. Some are offered online, some on campus, and some both ways. You choose one specialty when you apply.
| Track | Delivery listed by Ohio State | Leads to |
|---|---|---|
| Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) | Online or on campus | FNP national certification |
| Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) | Online (Ohio State Online) | PMHNP national certification |
| Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) | Online (Ohio State Online) | NNP certification; patients up to 2 years old |
| Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner | Online or on campus | AGPCNP certification |
| Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner | Online or on campus | PNP-AC certification |
| Nurse-midwifery, Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP, Pediatric Primary Care NP, Women’s Health NP | Single delivery mode; check the College page for which | Specialty certification |
Ohio State Online also lists a separate online Master of Science in Nursing Leadership and Strategy in Healthcare for nurses aiming at management roles, and an online BSN to DNP route. I have not covered those in detail here because their admission rules differ.
Credits, length and clinical work
- Credits: the College lists 53 to 73 credit hours depending on specialty. Ohio State Online’s programme page quotes 63, while its tuition page quotes 50, so confirm the exact total for your track with an enrolment adviser.
- Length: five semesters (about two years) full time or eight semesters (about three years) part time.
- Clinicals: three to four semesters of clinical coursework depending on specialty, done in your own area. Ohio State does not publish a single clinical-hour total on these pages.
- Campus visits: Ohio State Online states “Campus Requirements: NONE” for the online programme.
- Class style: most online courses meet live (synchronous) at set weekly times, with some asynchronous work. Plan around U.S. Eastern Time.
Can international nurses apply to the Ohio State online MSN?
Here is the short version for each type of reader.
| Your situation | Can you enrol? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Living outside the U.S. (for example in Nigeria, India or the Philippines) | No | Ohio State’s graduate admissions page says residents outside the U.S. cannot take part in distance learning programmes. |
| Living in the U.S. with an active RN licence in an authorised state | Yes, if you meet the other requirements | Clinicals happen where you live; you need RN licensure in the state where clinicals will take place. |
| Living in the U.S. in a state where Ohio State is not authorised | No | The College says residents of unauthorised states cannot participate. |
| Foreign-educated nurse planning to move to the U.S. later | Not yet | You need a U.S. RN licence by 1 August of your start year and must be living in an authorised state. |
| Wanting an F-1 student visa for this programme | No | Fully online study does not support an F-1 visa. Ohio State’s on-campus MSN is the visa route. |
The College of Nursing adds that its programmes are designed to meet licensure requirements in Ohio, and students who plan to be licensed in another state should check that state’s rules. Ohio State keeps state-by-state disclosures through its state authorisation office (otdi-stateauth@osu.edu), and the College answers questions at nursing@osu.edu.
The route for a foreign-educated nurse
If you trained outside the U.S. and want this degree eventually, the order matters:
- Get your nursing education evaluated: most U.S. state boards ask for a credentials review of foreign nursing education, often through CGFNS (TruMerit). Ohio State itself prefers TruMerit for transcript evaluation.
- Meet the English requirement of your chosen state board: many boards accept IELTS, TOEFL or OET for nurses educated outside the U.S., but the score rules differ by state.
- Pass the NCLEX-RN: this is the U.S. licensing exam. Book it through the state board you applied to; NCSBN lists current test locations.
- Get licensed and settle in an authorised state: you usually need an immigrant visa or a work visa (many nurses come through employer-sponsored green cards) before you can live and work there.
- Apply to Ohio State: once you hold an active, unencumbered RN licence and live in an authorised state, you apply like any U.S. nurse. Your foreign BSN still needs a course-by-course evaluation with a 4.0-scale GPA.
Ohio State online MSN requirements
These come from the College of Nursing MSN page and apply across specialties.
- A BSN or MSN from a nursing programme accredited by CCNE, ACEN or CNEA. You can apply before you finish, but the degree must be conferred by 1 August.
- An active, unencumbered RN licence by 1 August. Online students must show licensure in the state where clinicals will happen.
- A cumulative GPA of 3.0 in your last relevant degree. Applicants below 3.0 can still be considered under holistic review.
- A resume or CV.
- A statement of goals of no more than three single-spaced pages.
- Three recommenders, with at least two academic ones suggested.
- A recorded HireVue video interview, completed after you submit and before the deadline.
- A $60 application fee.
- No minimum years of experience are stated, but experience with your chosen patient population counts in your favour.
International transcripts and English
Ohio State asks for a course-by-course credential evaluation with a GPA on a 4.0 scale. TruMerit (formerly CGFNS) is preferred; WES, SpanTran, ECE, IEE, JS&A, IERF and ICD are also accepted. For English, the nursing page does not print scores and instead points to the university’s English Proficiency Policy, so check the Graduate and Professional Admissions site for current TOEFL and IELTS minimums.
Ohio State online MSN deadlines and start date
Admission is for the autumn semester only, in two rounds, and Ohio State does not allow deferrals.
| Stage | Round 1 | Round 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Application deadline (11:59 p.m. ET) | 16 October 2026 (closed) | 1 March 2027 |
| Decision released | Late December | Late April |
| Time to accept | Four weeks | Two weeks |
| Degree and RN licence due | 1 August 2027 | 1 August 2027 |
| Classes start | 24 August 2027 | 24 August 2027 |
The 24 August 2027 start date and the 1 March 2027 deadline come from Ohio State Online’s tuition page, which lists autumn 2027 and autumn 2028 intakes. For autumn 2028 the same page lists 1 March 2028.
Ohio State online MSN tuition
Ohio State Online lists the MSN at $1,158.58 per credit hour, including instructional, general and programme fees. It does not say on that page whether the rate differs for out-of-state online students, so ask an enrolment adviser.
| Credit total | Estimated tuition and fees at $1,158.58 per credit |
|---|---|
| 50 credits | About $57,929 |
| 63 credits | About $72,991 |
| 73 credits | About $84,576 |
These are my calculations from the published rate; Ohio State says fees are subject to change.
Costs not covered by tuition
- Travel to clinical sites, and any time off work you need for clinical shifts.
- Background checks, drug screening, immunisations and health insurance required by clinical sites.
- Your RN licence fees, and a second state licence if your clinicals cross state lines.
- The HireVue interview needs a webcam and steady internet; some students also budget for a better laptop.
- National certification exam fees after graduation.
Scholarships and financial aid
Federal student aid (FAFSA loans and grants) is limited to U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens such as green-card holders. Ohio State Online points students to its financial aid pages and to employer tuition reimbursement, which many U.S. hospitals offer. I found no Ohio State nursing scholarship on these pages aimed at international online students.
Accreditation
The College of Nursing’s accreditation page says the master’s programme is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), with the current term running to 31 December 2029. The nurse-midwifery track is accredited by ACME, with its next review in July 2034. Ohio State does not publish specialty certification pass rates on these pages.
How to write the Ohio State statement of goals
Ohio State gives you up to three single-spaced pages, which is a lot. Reviewers use it to judge fit with one specialty, so write about that specialty and nothing else.
- Open with a specific patient or unit moment that led you to this specialty.
- Show what you already do at RN level that an NP in that role builds on.
- Explain why online study suits your work and family situation, and where you will do clinicals.
- Name what you want to do after graduation, in a real setting.
- If your GPA is below 3.0, explain it briefly and point to later evidence, such as certifications or strong recent grades.
For illustration only, an FNP applicant might open like this:
“On my third night shift in the medical ward, a 58-year-old man came back with uncontrolled diabetes for the fourth time that year. Nobody had ever sat with him long enough to plan his meals around the food his family actually cooked. That conversation is the work I want to do as a family nurse practitioner.”
Common mistakes foreign-educated nurses make
- Applying from abroad: Ohio State’s online programme does not accept residents outside the U.S., however strong your file is.
- Expecting an F-1 visa: online programmes do not qualify. If you need a student visa, look at the on-campus MSN.
- Starting the credential evaluation late: course-by-course evaluations can take weeks. Start before you write your statement.
- Holding a licence in the wrong state: your licence must be valid in the state where your clinicals will happen.
- Skipping the HireVue step: the video interview comes after you submit and must be done before the deadline.
Who should apply
Apply if you are an RN already licensed and living in a U.S. state where Ohio State is authorised, you have a BSN, and you can attend live online classes on Eastern Time while working. Nurses who want a top-ranked FNP, PMHNP or NNP without moving to Ohio fit best.
Hold off if you live outside the U.S., do not yet have a U.S. RN licence, or need a student visa. Your first step is licensure, and the on-campus MSN is the route if you want to study in Columbus on an F-1.
