Duquesne University’s online MSN is ranked No. 44 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs, and two of its tracks rank far higher: No. 4 for nursing education and No. 5 for nursing administration. Can you take it from outside the U.S.? Duquesne does not bar students abroad, but it cannot accept online nursing applicants who live in Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee or Washington, and it says students on U.S. student visas cannot attend a full-time online programme while in the country. For nurses abroad, the realistic routes are the non-clinical tracks, with your RN licence and your home country’s recognition rules confirmed first.
The Duquesne online MSN requirements are a BSN (or a bachelor’s for some tracks) with a 3.0 GPA, a current unencumbered RN licence, one year of full-time RN experience and a statistics course. Tuition for 2026-27 is $1,918 per credit for every MSN track, before Duquesne’s 25%, 35% or 55% discounts for eligible students. I checked everything below on Duquesne’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
Duquesne online MSN ranking
Duquesne’s news release of 28 January 2026 lists these U.S. News 2026 Best Online Programs placings for its School of Nursing:
| U.S. News 2026 list | Duquesne rank |
|---|---|
| Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs (overall) | No. 44 |
| Online Master’s in Nursing Education | No. 4 |
| Online Master’s in Nursing Administration | No. 5 (up from No. 7) |
| Online Master’s in Nursing for Veterans | No. 14 |
The release does not say whether any of these spots are shared. The “Top 5” headline you may have seen refers to the two specialty rankings, not the overall list.
Duquesne online MSN tracks
Coursework is online, and most tracks add short on-campus residencies in Pittsburgh for physical assessment and hands-on practice. Duquesne lists six tracks.
| Track | Campus visits | Fee per semester (2026-27) |
|---|---|---|
| Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP | Three | $243 |
| Family (Individual Across the Lifespan) NP | Two | $157 |
| Psychiatric-Mental Health NP | Two | $180 |
| Forensic Nursing | One | $62 |
| Nursing Education and Faculty Role | One | $62 |
| Executive Nurse Leadership and Health Care Management | None | To be confirmed by Duquesne |
Duquesne also runs post-master’s certificates and a DNP for nurses who already hold an MSN.
Credits, length and clinical hours
- The FNP track is 44 credit hours with 775 clinical hours over three years online.
- FNP students attend two three-day residencies on campus, in the summers of years one and two.
- Duquesne does not print credit totals or clinical hours for the other tracks on its main MSN page. Its 2026-27 Graduate Student Handbook and the track pages carry plans of study.
- Up to nine MSN credits from another school may transfer if earned with a B or higher, usually within the last five years.
Can international nurses apply to the Duquesne online MSN?
Conditionally, yes. Duquesne’s state authorization page speaks directly to students outside the United States and does not ban them. Here is what its state authorization page and graduate catalog say.
| Your situation | Can you enrol? | What Duquesne says |
|---|---|---|
| Living abroad, non-NP track (Executive Leadership, Education, Forensic) | Possibly | Check whether your country regulates or taxes foreign online study and whether it recognises a U.S. online degree; contact your own nursing board |
| Living abroad, NP track | Unlikely in practice | NP tracks need U.S. clinical hours, campus residencies and U.S. licensure to practise as an NP |
| Wanting an F-1 student visa | No, for a full-time online programme | Student visa holders cannot attend full-time online programmes while in the U.S.; limited online coursework needs approval |
| U.S. resident of Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee or Washington | No | State board rules stop Duquesne accepting online nursing applicants from these states |
| U.S. resident of Arizona or New York | Executive Nurse Leadership only | Other MSN tracks are closed to residents of these two states |
| U.S. resident of any other state | Yes | Duquesne is a SARA member; check your state board if you will be licensed outside Pennsylvania |
On licensure, the MSN criteria ask for a current, unencumbered RN licence without naming a state. The catalog’s international section adds that nurses practising in their home country need licensure there, while those practising in the U.S. need a U.S. licence. Before any clinical or field contact outside Pennsylvania, Duquesne tells students to speak to their programme coordinator. Get a written answer from admissions (412-392-9859) on your exact case before paying anything.
The route for a foreign-educated nurse
- Have your nursing courses evaluated by CGFNS: Duquesne requires CGFNS (TruMerit) for nursing coursework and a NACES member, such as WES, for other coursework.
- Reach Duquesne’s English scores: they are higher than at most schools in this ranking (see below).
- Decide where you will practise: for a non-NP track from home, keep your home licence current and confirm your country will recognise the degree. For an NP track, you need the NCLEX-RN and a U.S. state licence.
- Plan the residencies: most tracks need one to three trips to Pittsburgh, so you need a way to enter the U.S. for a few days. Ask Duquesne’s Center for Global Engagement what it expects.
- Apply online: through Duquesne’s graduate nursing application portal.
Duquesne online MSN requirements
The 2025-26 graduate catalog sets different degree rules by track, with one shared document list.
| Track | Degree and GPA | Experience |
|---|---|---|
| NP tracks (AGACNP, FNP, PMHNP) | BSN from an accredited institution, GPA 3.0 or higher | One year of full-time RN work before clinical or specialty courses |
| Executive Nurse Leadership | Any bachelor’s, BSN preferred, GPA 3.0 or higher | One year of full-time RN work; strong leadership experience preferred |
| Forensic Nursing; Nursing Education | Bachelor’s, BSN preferred, GPA 3.0 or higher | One year of full-time RN work |
- A current, unencumbered RN licence.
- Statistics: undergraduate with a C or higher, or graduate with a B or higher.
- Completed graduate application, resume or CV, and a goal statement.
- Two professional references submitted electronically: one academic and one from a supervisor.
- Official transcripts.
- An interview may be required.
English test scores
| Test | Duquesne nursing minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 100 |
| IELTS | 7.5 |
| Duolingo English Test | 125 |
Scores must be from within one year and go to Duquesne’s Center for Global Engagement (intladmissions@duq.edu). That is higher than UNMC (IELTS 6.5) or the University of Maryland School of Nursing (IELTS 7), so book the test early.
Duquesne online MSN deadlines
Duquesne accepts applications any time before each term’s deadline. The fall 2026 round closed on 27 July 2026, so the fall date below is carried forward a year (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens).
| Start term | Deadline | Tracks |
|---|---|---|
| Spring 2027 | 1 December 2026 | Nurse Educator, Executive Nurse Leader and Forensic Nursing only |
| Summer 2027 | 12 April 2027 | MSN (tracks not split on the page) |
| Fall 2027 | 27 July 2027 | MSN (tracks not split on the page) |
Duquesne’s deadline page does not say which NP tracks start in summer and which in fall. Ask admissions before you plan around a date.
Duquesne online MSN tuition
Duquesne is private, so there is no in-state rate. For 2026-27 every MSN track costs $1,918 per credit, plus the track fee per semester shown in the tracks table. The university adds that students may also pay technology and clinical fees, without listing MSN amounts.
At list price, the 44-credit FNP comes to $84,392 in tuition before semester fees. Duquesne advertises a 25% scholarship, a 35% scholarship and a 55% tuition discount for select graduate nursing programmes, and its site lists discount pages for partner organisations and some nursing associations. A 55% discount would cut FNP tuition to about $37,976, but Duquesne decides who qualifies, so treat the list price as your planning figure until you have it in writing.
Costs not covered by tuition
- Flights, hotel and meals for one to three Pittsburgh residencies, each about three days.
- Technology and clinical fees, which Duquesne mentions but does not price for the MSN.
- CGFNS and NACES evaluations, English tests and, for NP tracks, NCLEX and state licence fees.
- Health requirements and checks set out in the Graduate Handbook.
- Any tax or fee your home country charges on foreign online study, which Duquesne specifically warns about.
- Certification exams after graduation for NP graduates.
Scholarships and financial aid
The tuition discounts above are Duquesne’s main lever. U.S. federal loans through FAFSA are open only to U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens, so nurses abroad should budget without them. If you work for a U.S. health system, check whether it is a Duquesne partner organisation.
Accreditation
Duquesne’s master’s, DNP and post-graduate APRN certificate programmes are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and the online programmes carry the same accreditation as campus ones. The university is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Duquesne does not publish NP certification pass rates on its MSN pages.
How to write the Duquesne goal statement
Duquesne asks for a goal statement and sets no length for it at MSN level. Keep it to one page and make every paragraph answer “why this track, why now, why Duquesne”.
- Start with a concrete situation from your nursing work that shows the gap you want to close.
- Link it to the track. For Nursing Education, mention precepting or teaching; for Executive Leadership, a unit you have run or a change you led.
- Mention Duquesne’s specialty ranking only if it ties to your goal, in one line.
- If you are abroad, state plainly where you will practise and how your licence and your country’s degree recognition are covered. This answers the reviewer’s first question for you.
For illustration only, a Nursing Education applicant working in West Africa might open like this:
“Our school of nursing admits 120 students a year and has four clinical instructors. As the ward sister who takes most of them, I have become a teacher without ever being taught how to teach. I want the training to run clinical teaching properly for the next cohort.”
Your two references matter here because Duquesne wants one academic and one supervisory referee. Our guide to recommendation letters with samples shows what each should cover.
Common mistakes foreign-educated nurses make
- Using WES for nursing courses: Duquesne wants CGFNS for nursing coursework; WES or another NACES member is for the rest.
- Booking IELTS for 7.0: Duquesne’s nursing minimum is 7.5, and scores older than a year are not accepted.
- Picking an NP track from abroad: clinical hours and NP practice assume a U.S. setting and licence.
- Forgetting the residencies: only Executive Nurse Leadership has none.
- Not checking home recognition: Duquesne warns that some countries do not formally recognise foreign online degrees. In Nigeria, ask the Nursing and Midwifery Council and your employer how they will treat a U.S. online MSN before you enrol.
- Skipping the statistics prerequisite: every track requires it, with a C or better.
Who should apply
Duquesne suits nurses who want a top-five specialty in nursing education or leadership, can pay private tuition or qualify for a discount, and can manage a short trip to Pittsburgh. Its Executive Nurse Leadership track, with no campus visits, is the most workable option on this list for an experienced nurse manager outside the U.S., provided the home-country checks come back clean.
If you live in Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee or Washington, Duquesne cannot take you. If you need a low-cost NP degree, public options below cost less per credit.
