University of Cincinnati Online MSN 2027: Ranking, Requirements, Tuition and Can International Nurses Apply?

University of Cincinnati Online MSN 2027: Ranking, Requirements, Tuition and Can International Nurses Apply?
UC’s online MSN is No. 19 in the U.S. News 2026 online nursing master’s rankings, but residents outside the U.S. cannot be admitted. Here are the specialties, requirements, $836 to $851 per credit tuition and the 15 November 2026 FNP deadline.

The University of Cincinnati online MSN is ranked No. 19 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs, where most nurse practitioner tracks are taught online. For nurses living in Nigeria or anywhere else outside the United States, UC’s answer is clear: its Family Nurse Practitioner admissions page says residents of countries outside the U.S. cannot be admitted, and online programmes do not qualify for a student visa.

If you are an RN in the U.S., UC is open to you from most states. The online FNP needs at least one year of U.S. RN experience, a 3.0 GPA is recommended, and 2025-26 tuition for online MSN students is $836 per credit for Ohio residents and $851 for everyone else, plus a $57 per credit online learning fee. The University of Cincinnati online MSN deadline for spring 2027 FNP entry is 15 November 2026. I checked these details on UC’s pages on 29 October 2026.

University of Cincinnati online MSN ranking

UC News reported in January 2026 that the College of Nursing’s online MSN is No. 19 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs, climbing into the top 20. The same release lists No. 8 in the ranking of online nursing master’s programmes for veterans. It does not say whether the No. 19 place is shared.

UC online MSN specialties

UC’s College of Nursing lists these MSN tracks and how each is delivered:

SpecialtyDeliveryNotes from UC
Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)Online51 credits and 672 clinical hours; year-round intake
Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NPOnlineOnline tuition rate
Women’s Health NPOnlineOnline tuition rate

Systems LeadershipOnlineFall entry only
Neonatal NPHybridResidents of Ohio, Kentucky or Indiana only; fall entry only
Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NPOn campus or hybridFall entry only; not enough on-campus courses for an F-1 visa

UC Online also runs a page for an online MSN in Nursing Education, and the College’s restriction notes mention Nursing Administration, which is missing from its own programme list. If either interests you, ask admissions whether it is taking students for 2027.

FNP credits, clinicals and campus time

  • Credits: 51.
  • Clinical hours: 672, precepted and in person.
  • Campus visit: from spring 2027, students in Advanced Health Assessment must complete a three-day on-campus immersion before starting practicum.
  • Length: UC’s FNP admissions page does not state a length in years.
  • Kansas residents: since 1 March 2025, some APRN students there may need an extra clinical elective (NURS 8098) to meet state hour rules.

Can international nurses apply to the University of Cincinnati online MSN?

For most of our readers, no. UC’s FNP admissions page sets out who can and cannot be admitted:

Your situationCan you enrol?Why
Living outside the U.S. (Nigeria, Ghana, India or elsewhere)NoUC says residents of countries outside the U.S. cannot be admitted
International nurse living and working legally in the U.S.Yes, if you meet the restUC accepts international students who will do clinicals in the U.S. and already have, or can get, legal work status
Wanting an F-1 student visaNoUC says online programmes, clinicals included, are not eligible for student visas
Living in AZ, LA, MA, NY, OR, RI or TNNoUC cannot admit online students from these states
Living in a U.S. territoryNoAmerican Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are excluded
Military abroadOnly on a baseYou must live on a military base and do clinicals there; clinicals at a U.S. Embassy are not allowed

Your RN licence must be in the state where your clinical experiences take place, and the FNP asks for at least one year of RN experience in the United States.

The route for a foreign-educated nurse

  1. Get your education evaluated: state boards usually ask for a credentials review (often CGFNS/TruMerit), and UC wants WES for admission.
  2. Meet your state board’s English rule: IELTS, TOEFL or OET, depending on the board.
  3. Pass the NCLEX-RN and get licensed in the state where you will live.
  4. Secure legal work status in the U.S.: most foreign-educated nurses arrive on employer-sponsored immigrant visas.
  5. Work for at least a year as an RN in the U.S. to meet the FNP experience rule.
  6. Apply through NursingCAS for the term that suits you; FNP admits in spring, summer and fall.

UC online MSN requirements

From the College of Nursing MSN admissions page and the UC Online FNP page:

  • A current, active, unrestricted RN licence with no disciplinary action, in the state where your clinicals will happen.
  • A BSN from a programme accredited by ACEN or CCNE.
  • An overall BSN GPA of 3.0 is recommended, and a science GPA of 3.0 is required for all tracks except nursing administration and nursing education.
  • An undergraduate statistics course with a grade of 2.0 or higher.
  • At least one year of RN experience; for the FNP, one year in the United States.
  • Three references, a resume and a goal statement (500 to 700 words for the FNP).
  • Applications go through NursingCAS.

Fees to apply

  • NursingCAS: $85 for domestic applicants and $90 for international applicants, according to UC Online’s FNP page.
  • UC Graduate School fee: $65, or $70 for international applicants, waived through spring 2027.
  • A non-refundable $300 matriculation fee, due within 15 business days of your acceptance letter.

English tests and transcripts

UC’s English minimums are higher than most schools in this series. You are exempt if you hold a U.S. higher education degree or were born in a country where English is the first language.

TestUC minimum
TOEFL internet-based100
IELTS7.0 overall
Duolingo English Test120

International transcripts must be evaluated by WES (preferred) or another NACES member.

UC online MSN deadlines

UC Online’s FNP page gives these dates. Applications are accepted year-round.

TermApplication deadlineClasses start
Spring 202715 November 202611 January 2027
Summer 202715 March 202710 May 2027
Fall 202715 July 202723 August 2027

The College of Nursing’s general deadlines page still shows 2025 dates (15 October for spring, 15 March for summer, 1 June for fall), with NursingCAS verification due a few weeks later. Systems Leadership, Neonatal and AG Acute Care admit for fall only and close when full, so if you are applying to one of those, aim for 1 June 2027 for fall 2027 (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens).

UC online MSN tuition

UC’s latest MSN fee schedule is for 2025-26. Rates may change for 2026-27.

Online MSN (AGPCNP, FNP, Midwifery, Systems Leadership, WHNP)Ohio residentNon-resident
Part time (9 credits or fewer), per credit$836$851
Full time (10 credits or more), per semester$8,359$8,509
Online learning fee$57 per credit or $563 per semester$57 per credit or $563 per semester

The hybrid tracks (Neonatal and AG Acute Care) charge non-residents far more: $1,423 per credit part time, against $861 for metro residents of Kentucky or Indiana.

At the part-time rate, my estimate for the 51-credit FNP is about $45,543 for an Ohio resident and $46,308 for a non-resident, tuition and online fee only. UC’s out-of-state online rate is only $15 a credit above the Ohio rate, which I think makes it good value for a top-20 online NP.

Costs not covered by tuition

  • Travel to Cincinnati for the three-day FNP immersion.
  • Travel to clinical sites and time away from paid shifts during 672 clinical hours.
  • Background checks, immunisations and health insurance demanded by clinical agencies.
  • A second RN licence if your clinicals are in another state.
  • Certification exam fees after graduation.

Scholarships and financial aid

Federal student aid is limited to U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens. I did not find a UC nursing scholarship for international online students on these pages, so employer tuition support is the main option for working nurses.

Accreditation and pass rates

CCNE accredits UC’s MSN, along with its BSN, DNP and post-graduate APRN certificate programmes. The nurse-midwifery MSN is accredited by ACME. UC publishes midwifery board pass rates, but not rates for its NP tracks.

How to write the UC goal statement

The FNP goal statement is 500 to 700 words, which is short. Every paragraph should tie your RN experience to the FNP role.

  • Open with a patient situation from your U.S. or home-country practice that showed you what a family nurse practitioner does differently.
  • Describe your current RN role in the U.S. and the patient population you serve.
  • Say where you expect to do clinicals and whether you have preceptor contacts.
  • If you trained abroad, say so plainly and show what it adds, such as experience with tropical diseases or high patient loads.
  • End with the community and setting where you want to work.

For illustration only, an FNP applicant educated in Nigeria might open like this:

“Before I moved to Texas, I worked in a primary health centre where one nurse saw sixty patients before noon. Here, I see patients in a cardiac step-down unit who could have avoided admission with earlier primary care. I want to be the clinician who catches those problems at the first visit.”

Common mistakes foreign-educated nurses make

  • Applying from home: UC does not admit residents of countries outside the U.S.
  • Counting foreign RN years: the FNP asks for one year of RN experience in the United States.
  • Underestimating English scores: a TOEFL of 100 or IELTS 7.0 is higher than many schools ask.
  • Living in an excluded state: check the seven excluded states before paying the NursingCAS fee.
  • Missing the immersion: FNP students from spring 2027 must attend three days on campus before practicum.

Who should apply

UC fits RNs already working in the U.S., including internationally educated nurses with a green card or work authorisation, who want an affordable online NP from a top-20 programme. The near-flat tuition for out-of-state online students is the main reason to choose it.

If you have not yet passed the NCLEX or moved to the U.S., UC is a later step. Use the time to build U.S.-recognisable experience and get your credentials evaluated by WES.
