University of Nebraska-Lincoln admission requirements for international students are straightforward: complete four years of English (or your native language) and upper-level maths plus three years each of natural and social sciences, apply through the Common App or Nebraska’s own application with a $45 fee, and show English proficiency with TOEFL iBT 79 on the older scale, IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 110. SAT and ACT scores are not required for general admission. If your English score is short, Nebraska can still admit you conditionally through its Intensive English Program.
Nebraska (UNL) is far easier to get into than an elite private college. It admitted 87.8% of all first-year applicants and 52.7% of international applicants in fall 2025. Its 2026-27 cost for a non-resident living on campus is $49,008, and every admitted international first-year is considered automatically for merit scholarships of up to $15,000 a year. UNL is ranked No. 158 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2026 edition. For fall 2027, the priority deadline is 1 November 2026 and the final deadline is 1 May 2027. I checked these figures on UNL’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
University of Nebraska-Lincoln ranking and headline numbers
In the U.S. News 2026 edition, UNL ranked No. 158 among National Universities and No. 84 among top public schools, down from No. 152 in the 2025 edition. I could not confirm its position in the 2027 edition released in September 2026.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln acceptance rate and class profile
UNL’s Common Data Set for 2025-26 breaks its first-year admissions down by residency, so you can see the international numbers directly.
| Applicant group (fall 2025) | Applied | Admitted | Enrolled | Admit rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nebraska residents | 9,229 | 8,169 | 3,541 | 88.5% |
| Other US states | 8,413 | 7,673 | 1,129 | 91.2% |
| International | 1,006 | 530 | 64 | 52.7% |
| All first-years | 18,648 | 16,372 | 4,734 | 87.8% |
UNL does not explain why the international rate is lower than the overall rate. The safe approach is to meet every core course and English rule and complete your file early, because only fully admitted students are considered for scholarships.
University of Nebraska-Lincoln tuition for international students in 2026-27
International students pay non-resident rates. These are UNL’s 2026-27 estimates for a non-resident undergraduate:
| Item | Living on campus | Living off campus |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition and fees | $31,542 | $31,542 |
| Housing and food | $13,950 | $6,000 |
| Books and supplies | $1,128 | $1,128 |
| Personal expenses (including transport) | $2,324 | $2,324 |
| Loan fees (if applicable) | $64 | $64 |
| Total | $49,008 | $41,058 |
Tuition is based on 15 credit hours a semester. The Colleges of Business, Architecture and Engineering add differential tuition on their courses. For your I-20, UNL asks for proof of at least $51,478 in a bank account, counting any scholarship, so the visa budget is a little higher than the cost table. UNL says its tuition is the lowest in the Big Ten.
University of Nebraska-Lincoln scholarships for international students
UNL is a public university, so international students do not get federal US aid or a need-based package of the kind Williams or Bowdoin give. What it offers is merit money. Every international first-year is reviewed for these awards on admission, with no separate essay. These are the guidelines for students who entered in fall 2026:
| Scholarship | Value | Four-year maximum | To keep it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global Excellence Scholarship | $15,000 a year | Up to $60,000 | 3.0 cumulative GPA and 24 UNL credits a year |
| Global Ambassador Tuition Scholarship | $10,000 a year toward international tuition | Up to $40,000 | 2.0 cumulative GPA and 24 credits a year |
| Global Delegate Scholarship | $4,000 a year | Up to $16,000 | 3.0 cumulative GPA and 24 UNL credits a year |
- One award only: you can hold one Global scholarship, and it cannot be combined with other campus-wide merit awards. College and department scholarships can be added on top.
- Full-time study: the full amount needs 15 credits a semester. At 12 to 14 credits you get 80% to 93%; below 12 you get nothing.
- English matters: you must meet the English requirement for unconditional admission. Students still in the Intensive English Program are not yet eligible.
- Deposit on time: the Global Ambassador award asks you to pay the enrolment deposit by 15 May; UNL’s international page lists 1 May as the scholarship deadline.
UNL says awards may change each year for new students, so treat the table as a strong guide for fall 2027 and check the 2027-28 guidelines when they appear. Even the top award leaves about $34,000 a year to pay on campus, so plan your family budget before you rely on it.

|---|---|
| Upper-level mathematics | 4 |
| English and native language | 4 |

Documents
- Application: Common App or Nebraska’s application, with the $45 fee paid by card.
- Final secondary school transcript: signed and stamped by your principal.
- Secondary school certificate or diploma.
- English test scores: sent directly by the testing agency. For IELTS, also email your Test Report Form number and NUID to admissions@unl.edu.
- I-20 documents after admission: financial statement of support, bank statement showing at least $51,478 with the account holder’s name in English, passport information page and international address form.
- Before arrival: the $250 enrolment deposit, a pre-enrolment health form, proof of two measles (MMR) doses and a tuberculosis test.
Testing policy
The SAT and ACT are not required for general admission. They may be required for the College of Architecture and the College of Engineering, where UNL also uses ACT English or SAT Reading and Writing scores as English benchmarks. UNL’s SAT and TOEFL code is 6877 and its ACT code is 2482.
English requirements
| Test | General admission | Engineering | Journalism and Mass Communications |
|---|---|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (older scale) | 79 (sub-scores 18) | 80 | 100 |
| TOEFL iBT (scale used from January 2026) | 4.0 (sub-scores 4.0) | Check with UNL | Check with UNL |
| IELTS | 6.5 (bands 6.0) | 6.5 | 7.0 |
| Duolingo | 110 (sub-scores 105) | Not listed | Not listed |
| UNL English Language Test | 80 | 80 | 85 |
Architecture and Education and Human Sciences ask for Duolingo 120. You are exempt if you graduated from a US high school or completed 30 transferable semester hours at a US college. If you miss the score, UNL enrols you in its Intensive English Program with conditional admission and reviews you each semester; to start full degree study in the fall you must meet the requirement by 15 July.

| Step | Date |

| Priority application deadline | 1 November 2026 |
| University Honors Program application | 15 November 2026 |
| Spring 2027 entry (final deadline) | 1 December 2026 |

Late applicants can be placed on a waiting list that favours students meeting Nebraska’s assured admission rules. Scholarships go only to applicants who are fully admitted, so the earlier you finish your file, the better.
Deadline
The priority deadline is 1 November 2026. Apply by then if you want the best chance at the $15,000 Global Excellence Scholarship and a place in the Honors Program.
How to write your Nebraska application essays, with a sample opening
UNL does not ask for its own supplemental essays for general admission, and its Global scholarships need no essay. If you apply through the Common App, your personal statement is still read, and the University Honors Program has its own application due on 15 November. Use the writing to show readiness for a large university: independence, a clear academic direction and how you will use resources such as UCARE, UNL’s programme that pairs undergraduates with professors on research.
- Name your major and why: agriculture, engineering, business and computing all have separate colleges at UNL, so a clear interest reads well.
- Show how you handle change: moving to the US Midwest is a big step. One concrete example of adapting to something new helps.
- Keep it plain: a public university reader handles thousands of files. Clear and specific beats clever.
Sample opening, for illustration only:
“When the irrigation pump on our family’s rice plot failed for the third time, I took it apart with a borrowed spanner and a phone video. I want to study mechanical engineering so that the next repair starts with a drawing, not a guess.”
What happens after you apply
- MyRED account: UNL sets up your MyRED portal, where you upload documents and track your file.
- Admission decision: once your file is complete you receive full admission or, if your English is short, conditional admission through the Intensive English Program.
- Scholarship review: fully admitted international first-years are reviewed automatically for Global scholarships.
- I-20: submit the financial documents in MyRED. UNL issues the I-20 for your F-1 visa interview.
- Deposit and health forms: pay the $250 deposit by 1 May and complete the health requirements before you arrive.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Missing the 1 November priority date: it is the best route to scholarships and Honors.
- Sending scores by screenshot: UNL needs official scores from the testing agency.
- Falling short of the college-specific English score: Engineering and Journalism want more than general admission.
- Counting on a full scholarship: UNL’s international awards are partial. Budget for the rest.
- Showing too little money for the I-20: the bank balance must reach $51,478, including scholarships, in the account holder’s English name.
- Dropping below 15 credits: scholarship payments fall when you take fewer credits.
Costs scholarships do not cover
- The rest of the $49,008 on-campus budget after your scholarship.
- Differential tuition for business, architecture and engineering courses.
- Health insurance, if not included in your fees; check with UNL when you are admitted.
- Flights, the US visa fee and SEVIS I-901 fee; check current amounts on official US government sites.
- Summer housing and food, since scholarships cannot be used for summer.
- Winter clothing for Nebraska’s cold months.
Majors, campus and city
UNL offers more than 100 majors and has more than 500 student organisations. It is strongest in areas that match its land-grant history and its size, such as agriculture and natural resources, engineering, business, computing and journalism. Graduates in STEM fields may qualify for up to two extra years of Optional Practical Training work in the US on top of the standard one year.
Lincoln is Nebraska’s capital, a mid-sized Midwest city that UNL describes as one of the region’s safest and fastest-growing. Living costs are well below those of big coastal cities, as the off-campus housing estimate of $6,000 a year shows, and winters are cold.
University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate admissions in brief
Graduate students apply to individual departments through UNL’s Office of Graduate Studies. Funding usually comes through department assistantships rather than the Global scholarships, which are for undergraduates. Graduate English minimums are:
- TOEFL iBT 79 (tests before 21 January 2026) or 4 (later tests).
- IELTS Academic 6.5.
- Duolingo 120.
- Students with lower writing scores may have to take ESL 887, a three-credit English course. Some departments set higher minimums.

Who should apply to Nebraska
Apply if you want a large US research university with a realistic admission rate, solid programmes in engineering, agriculture, business or computing, and a lower price than most Big Ten schools. It suits families who can cover about $34,000 to $45,000 a year after a merit award.
It is the wrong choice if you cannot pay anything, because there is no need-based package for international students, or if you want a big coastal city.
