The University of Toronto is hiring up to two Associate Professors in its Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing. These are full-time, tenure-stream (continuing) posts on the downtown St. George campus, starting on 1 July 2027. The advertised salary is CAD 150,000 to 180,000 a year, depending on experience, and the university says exceptionally qualified candidates may be offered more. You need a nursing entry-to-practice degree, a PhD in nursing or a related area, an international research reputation, and eligibility to register with the College of Nurses of Ontario. International applicants are welcome, but Canadians and permanent residents get priority. Below I go through the University of Toronto Associate Professor Nursing job in detail: the duties, the full document list, how the reference system works, what the salary means in practice, and how to build a research statement and teaching dossier that stand out.

What the role involves
The advert keeps the duties short. As an Associate Professor in the tenure stream you will:
- Lead research: sustain and lead innovative, independent research.
- Hold external funding: keep an outstanding, competitive, externally funded research programme running.
- Teach: carry an assigned teaching load across the faculty’s programmes.
- Serve: take on service duties in the faculty and university.
No research area is named. The advert says your interests should complement and strengthen the faculty’s existing work. That means you need to read the faculty’s research pages and show where you fit.
The advert does not name a reporting line. In a Canadian faculty, tenure-stream faculty normally sit under the Dean, and the Dean’s office handles this search, which is why enquiries go to the Dean’s office address. The advert does not state teaching loads or the split between research, teaching and service.
Programmes you could teach on
The faculty runs a 20-month, second-entry Bachelor of Science in Nursing for people who already hold another degree. It also offers a professional Master of Nursing with three fields: clinical, health systems leadership and administration, and nurse practitioner. On top of these sit doctoral programmes, which the advert describes as world-leading. Students train across the Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network, which has fourteen fully affiliated teaching hospitals, plus affiliated community hospitals and public health agencies.
About the University of Toronto and Bloomberg Nursing
The University of Toronto was founded in 1827 and has three campuses: St. George downtown, Mississauga and Scarborough. The advert cites its 21st place in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, the university placed fourth in the world for nursing, and the advert says the faculty is consistently in the QS top 10 for the subject.
Nursing education at the university dates back to 1920. The faculty took its current name in 2007 after a CAD 10 million gift from Lawrence Bloomberg. It is a small faculty of around 500 students, with academic links across all three campuses, a simulation laboratory, and access to the Gerstein Science Information Centre, which the advert describes as the largest academic health science library in Canada.
Requirements
The advert does not label its criteria as essential and desirable, but the wording makes the split clear.
Essential
- An entry-to-practice degree in nursing (BScN or MN).
- A PhD in nursing or a related area.
- A clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching.
- An established international reputation.
- Eligibility for registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
- Sustained, high-impact publications in top-ranked journals in your field.
- Evidence of excellent teaching, shown through a teaching dossier and strong references.
- Experience working with, teaching or mentoring diverse groups, and the ability to foster diversity on campus, in the curriculum or in the profession.
Preferred
- Research and teaching interests that complement the faculty’s existing strengths.
- The advert states: “Preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as Indigenous.”
A note on CNO eligibility. The advert asks that you be eligible to register, not that you already hold Ontario registration. If you trained outside Canada, check the CNO’s process for internationally educated nurses before you apply. You should be able to explain in your cover letter how you meet the eligibility test.
Salary: what CAD 150,000 to 180,000 means
This is one of the few faculty adverts on our list with a published salary, so you can plan around it. The base range is CAD 150,000 to 180,000 a year, and the university says it may go beyond that for exceptionally qualified candidates. Where you land will depend on your rank history, grant record and any competing offers.
The advert also lists benefits: health and dental cover, a university pension plan, childcare support, tuition waivers and flexible work arrangements. Remember that Canadian salaries are taxed federally and by Ontario, so your take-home pay will be well below the gross figure. Toronto is one of Canada’s most expensive cities for rent. Before you accept any offer, check current rents in the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s rental market reports and run your figures through an Ontario tax calculator.
Visa and immigration
The advert says: “All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.” This is standard wording in Canadian faculty adverts. It does not stop international candidates from applying, and it does not promise sponsorship. If you are not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you can still apply and be shortlisted. The practical effect of the priority rule is that your file has to stand out clearly against Canadian and permanent resident applicants of similar standing. Ask the Dean’s office about work permit support only if you are offered an interview.
How to apply
- Open the listing: use the “Apply” link on THE Unijobs listing 416619, which takes you to the University of Toronto careers site, Req ID 50146.
- Upload your cover letter and CV: these go into their own fields.
- Combine the rest: put the research statement, one recent publication and the teaching dossier into one or two PDF or Word files.
- Build the teaching dossier: it must contain a teaching statement, sample course materials and teaching evaluations.
- Name three referees: give names and contact details. The university’s system emails them within 48 hours of your submission.
- Chase the letters: letters must be recent, dated, signed and on letterhead, and must arrive by 11 November 2026.
- Complete the optional Diversity Survey: it is voluntary and responses are kept confidential.
- Accessibility needs: email uoft.careers@utoronto.ca if you need accommodation during recruitment.
The university has adopted the AAU Principles on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Academia. As part of that, applicants must allow the university to obtain information from previous employers about any findings of sexual misconduct.

How to write the research statement and cover letter
At Associate Professor level the committee is judging two things: whether your research programme is already established and funded, and whether it will thrive at Toronto. Your documents should answer both.
Research statement structure
- The problem you work on: one paragraph naming the health problem and population, and why it matters.
- What you have shown so far: three or four findings, each tied to a paper and, where possible, a change in practice or policy.
- Funding record: grants held as principal investigator, with funder and amount.
- The next five years: two or three aims, the funding you will target (for example the Canadian Institutes of Health Research), and the partners you will need.
- Fit with Bloomberg Nursing: name faculty members and hospital partners you would work with, and say what you add.
- Training: how you will supervise master’s and doctoral students.
Cover letter structure
Open with the position and Req ID, then summarise your research, teaching and leadership in one paragraph each. State your CNO eligibility in one clear sentence. Close with your fit and availability for a 1 July 2027 start. Two pages is plenty.
A sample opening line, for illustration only: “I am applying for the tenure-stream Associate Professor post in Nursing (Req ID 50146). My research on nurse-led follow-up after cardiac surgery is funded by two national grants and has changed discharge practice in four hospitals.”
What happens after you apply
The advert does not give a timetable. Canadian tenure-stream searches usually go like this: a search committee reviews files after the closing date, invites a shortlist to video interviews, then brings finalists for a campus visit. The visit usually includes a research talk, a teaching session or presentation, and meetings with faculty, students and the Dean. Offers then go through the Dean and the university. With a 1 July 2027 start, I would expect interviews in the early months of 2027, but the university has not published dates.
Common mistakes
- Missing references: the deadline covers reference letters, and late letters can leave your file incomplete.
- A generic research statement: without naming faculty and partners at Toronto, you have not shown fit.
- A thin teaching dossier: listing courses is not evidence. Include evaluations and real materials.
- Ignoring CNO eligibility: if you trained abroad and don’t address it, the committee may assume you are not eligible.
- Applying at the wrong rank: if you have no established international reputation yet, the Assistant Professor post fits you better.
Who should apply and who shouldn’t
Apply if you hold a nursing degree and a PhD, have several years as an Assistant Professor or equivalent, lead funded research as principal investigator, and publish regularly in top nursing or health journals. Experienced nurse scientists from the UK, Australia, the US and African countries with strong research records can compete, especially if they bring external funding.
Don’t apply for this rank if you are within a few years of your PhD or don’t yet have independent funding. Look at the Assistant Professor post instead. If you hold no nursing degree, you don’t meet the entry-to-practice requirement however strong your health research is.

Faculty programme and hospital network details come from the advert’s “about” section, and the faculty’s background comes from its Wikipedia entry. The University of Toronto careers site and its candidate FAQ on reference collection are the official places to apply and to check any changes. I will update this page if the university changes the deadline.
