Purdue University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadline

Purdue University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadline
Purdue expects SAT, ACT or CLT scores, has you apply to a specific major, and costs international students about $52,698 for 2026-27. Its merit scholarships are for domestic students only. Here are the class profile, application steps, essays and the 1 November 2026 and 15 January 2027 deadlines.

Purdue University admission requirements for international students start with one choice: the major. You apply through the Common App directly to a specific major at the West Lafayette campus, answer Purdue’s own short questions, self-report your grades, and send SAT, ACT or CLT scores, which Purdue expects from first-year applicants. If English is not your first language, you also prove English proficiency, most often with Duolingo, IELTS or TOEFL. The application fee is $60.

Purdue is one of the cheaper big US universities for international students, partly because base tuition has been frozen. The 2026-27 budget for an international undergraduate in a general programme is $52,698 including housing, food, books and other costs. Purdue’s merit scholarships are open to domestic students only, so most international students fund the degree themselves or with outside sponsors. For fall 2027 entry, the Early Action deadline is 1 November 2026 and Regular Decision closes on 15 January 2027. I checked everything below on Purdue’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

Purdue ranking

In the U.S. News Best Colleges 2027 edition, released on 22 September 2026, Purdue is ranked #55 National Universities, U.S. News 2027 edition, down from No. 46 in the 2026 edition. Its programme rankings in the same edition are far higher, and these are what most international applicants care about:

Purdue acceptance rate and class profile

Purdue’s fall 2026 class profile gives these official figures:

Measure (fall 2026)Figure
First-year applications82,160 (61,585 Early Action, 20,575 Regular Decision)
First-year students enrolled10,818
International first-years746 (6.9% of the class)
International students at all levels8,597, including 3,663 undergraduates
Countries represented116

Purdue’s profile page also carries admit rates and test ranges, but they did not load in the version I could read. For fall 2025, the Purdue Exponent reported a record 89,539 applicants and an admit rate of about 39% for out-of-state applicants and about 71% for Indiana residents. Purdue does not publish a separate international admit rate on the pages I checked. Because you apply to a specific major, competition also differs from programme to programme.

Purdue tuition for international students in 2026-27

The Bursar’s office publishes the 2026-27 West Lafayette rates. International students pay the non-resident rate plus International Student Tuition of $1,655 per semester. Purdue’s trustees froze base tuition at the main campus again for 2025-26 and 2026-27.

Item (2026-27, international, general programme)Per year
Billed tuition and fees$32,104
Housing and food$16,734
Books, transport and other costs (estimated)About $3,860
Total estimated cost$52,698

Some programmes cost more because of differential fees:

Programme (2026-27)International tuition and fees per year
General programmes$32,104
Polytechnic Institute$32,676
Daniels School of Business and Economics$35,540
Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Biological Engineering$36,154

The John Martinson Honors College adds $100 per semester. Budget separately for health insurance, and note that flight training courses have their own fees.

Purdue scholarships for international students

Purdue’s scholarship page says only domestic students are eligible for its merit scholarships, and it names F and J visa holders as not eligible. That rules out the Trustees Scholarship ($16,000 a year for non-residents), the Presidential Scholarship ($10,000 a year for non-residents), Indy Scholars, Lilly Scholars and the National Recognition awards. International undergraduates also cannot get US federal aid, and Purdue’s admissions pages do not ask them for the CSS Profile or ISFAA.

What remains:

  • College-based scholarships: Purdue’s colleges award some scholarships of their own. Check your college’s page for any award open to international students, and read the citizenship rules carefully.
  • Outside scholarships: government, company and foundation awards from your country.
  • Lower cost: with frozen tuition, the full budget of about $52,700 is below many peer public universities.

If you need a large award to attend, read our guides to Rutgers-New Brunswick, which gives international students automatic awards of $5,000 to $16,000 a year, and the Iowa State international merit scholarship.

Purdue admission requirements for international students: the application

  1. Common App: the application opens on 1 August. You choose a major and, if you wish, a second major.
  2. Fee: $60, non-refundable, or a qualified fee waiver.
  3. Essays: the Common App personal essay plus Purdue’s questions, including why Purdue and why your major. Honors College applicants answer four more prompts.
  4. Self-reported grades: you enter your coursework and grades yourself; official records are needed if you enrol.
  5. SAT, ACT or CLT: expected (details below).
  6. English proficiency: required if your first language is not English.
  7. Course background: four years of maths and English, three of lab science and social studies, and two of a world language. Students from non-English-speaking countries do not need to meet the world language rule. Engineering applicants are expected to have chemistry; nursing and pharmacy need chemistry and biology.
  8. Transcripts and translations: records not in English need certified translations. You need at least three consecutive years of secondary courses and proof of graduation before you enrol.

Purdue says that from 2026, some applicants with citizenship of China (including Hong Kong and Macau), Russia, North Korea, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba or other identified countries may be asked for more details on their background, funding and affiliations under an Indiana review. Students who have 12 or more college credits after secondary school apply as transfer students.

Testing policy: SAT, ACT or CLT expected

Purdue’s guide to applying says it expects first-year applicants to have SAT, ACT or CLT scores, with exceptions only where a student could not test. It has no preference between the tests, combines your highest section scores across dates, and accepts scores from the last five years. The ACT science section is not required. The codes are ACT 1230 and SAT 1631. You can self-report scores when you apply.

English requirements

Purdue accepts the Duolingo English Test, IELTS, TOEFL, the ACT or SAT, or an English-medium curriculum as evidence of English proficiency, and says a test is the most common and preferred route. Scores must be from the last two years, self-reported scores are fine for review, and official scores are needed once you accept. Purdue’s English proficiency page did not display its minimum scores when I checked, so confirm the current minimums on that page or with intl-admissions@purdue.edu before you book a test. Some students admitted without a test take an English placement exam after enrolling.

Early Action is non-binding. Purdue’s deadlines page shows dates without a year; the years above follow from the cycle that opened on 1 August 2026. A complete application by 1 November is needed for full consideration for admission and the Honors College, and most of Purdue’s applicants now apply early: 61,585 of the 82,160 applications for fall 2026 came in Early Action.

Early Action closes 1 November 2026

Three in four applicants for fall 2026 applied early, and only Early Action applicants get full consideration for the Honors College. If your test scores and English results are ready, submit by 1 November 2026.

How to write the Purdue essays

Purdue’s questions are short, about 250 words each in the 2025-26 cycle according to College Transitions. One asks how opportunities at Purdue would support your interests in and out of the classroom. Another asks why you chose your major and campus, and a third covers your second major if you list one.

  • Name real Purdue opportunities: a lab, design team, learning community, research programme or course.
  • Tie the major to something you did: one project or problem you worked on is enough.
  • Keep the two answers different: one about life at Purdue, one about the major.
  • Explain the second major: if you list one, show it makes sense alongside the first.

For illustration only, a student applying to agricultural and biological engineering might open the major question: “On my uncle’s farm, a third of the tomatoes rot between harvest and market, and I have spent two dry seasons testing cheap ways to keep them cool.” The rest would connect that work to specific Purdue courses or research.

What happens after you apply

  1. Check your portal: make sure your test scores, English results and translations are in.
  2. Decision: Early Action results on 15 January 2027; Regular Decision results by 31 March 2027.
  3. Accept your offer: follow the admitted-student steps and send official test scores once you accept.
  4. Proof of funding and I-20: show you can pay for the year, then receive your I-20 from International Students and Scholars.
  5. Visa: pay the SEVIS fee and book your F-1 interview. Purdue notes a Department of Homeland Security rule changing some F-1 and J-1 regulations from 15 September 2026, which its international office is reviewing, so watch for updates.
  6. Placement: you may take an English placement exam on arrival.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Applying without a test score: Purdue expects SAT, ACT or CLT results.
  • Choosing the most popular major without a plan: you apply to a major, and the competition differs a lot between programmes.
  • Expecting merit money: Purdue’s merit scholarships are for domestic students only.
  • Skipping the chemistry requirement for engineering: Purdue expects it.
  • Missing translations: non-English records need certified translations.
  • Budgeting for the general rate when studying engineering or computer science: those programmes cost about $4,000 a year more.

Costs that aid does not cover

Your budget should include health insurance, flights, SEVIS and visa fees, the differential fee for your programme, Honors College fees if you join, winter clothing, a laptop that fits your major, and summer housing if you stay for research or an internship. Tuition is frozen for 2026-27, but housing and living costs can still rise.

Majors and strengths

Purdue offers more than 200 undergraduate majors. Its biggest strengths are engineering (No. 8 in the U.S. News 2027 undergraduate list, with five programmes in the national top five), agriculture, aeronautics and astronautics, computer science and cybersecurity, and business through the Daniels School. Purdue ranked sixth nationally for internships and co-ops in the same U.S. News edition, which matters if you want work experience during your degree.

Campus and city

West Lafayette is a college town in Indiana, across the Wabash River from Lafayette, about an hour from Indianapolis. The university dominates the town, and with more than 10,000 new first-years in fall 2026 it is a very large campus community. The international community is large: 8,597 students from 116 countries in fall 2026.

Purdue graduate admissions for international students

Graduate admission is handled by Purdue’s Office of Graduate Admissions together with each department. Each programme sets its own requirements, including minimum GPA, English test scores and whether it wants the GRE, so read your programme’s admission page. Graduate funding comes through department assistantships and fellowships. You can contact the graduate admissions office at gradinfo@purdue.edu.

Purdue is the cheapest of these four for international students in general programmes. For universities that meet full need, see our MIT admission guide and our list of the best American scholarships for international students.

Who should apply to Purdue

Apply if you know what you want to study, especially engineering, agriculture, computer science or business, can sit the SAT or ACT in time, and your family or sponsor can fund about $53,000 to $57,000 a year. For engineering, I think Purdue is one of the best-value options among large US public universities for a self-funded student.

Look elsewhere if you are undecided about your major or need a scholarship to attend. Purdue’s merit awards are closed to international students, and the major-based application rewards students with a clear plan.
