University of Florida admission requirements for international students include the Common App with UF’s short-answer supplement, a personal essay, four years of secondary school transcripts, a course-by-course credential evaluation from a NACES member for any non-US coursework, an SAT, ACT or CLT score, and English proof unless your country is exempt. The test is not optional. Florida’s Board of Governors requires every first-year student to submit one. UF also reports in its Common Data Set that institutional scholarship and grant aid is not available to nonresident students, so international students should expect to pay the full cost.
The good news is the price. UF is one of the cheapest top public universities for out-of-state students, with a 2026-27 budget of $54,010 for a first-year living on campus. It is ranked No. 34 nationally and No. 8 among public universities by U.S. News, and it admitted 930 of 8,931 international applicants for fall 2025, about 10.4%. For fall 2027 entry, Early Decision closed on 15 October 2026. Early Action is due on 1 November 2026 and Regular Decision on 15 January 2027. All of this was checked on UF’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
University of Florida ranking
| Ranking | UF position |
|---|---|
| National Universities, U.S. News 2027 edition | #34 (tie) |
| Top Public Schools, U.S. News 2027 edition | #8 (tie) |
The 2027 edition is UF’s tenth year in a row in the top ten public universities. UT Austin shares both positions with UF this year.
University of Florida acceptance rate and class profile
These figures come from UF’s Common Data Set for 2025-26, which covers the class that entered in fall 2025.
| Group (fall 2025) | Applied | Admitted | Enrolled |
|---|---|---|---|
| All first-years | 90,523 | 18,403 (about 20.3%) | 7,619 |
| Florida residents | 42,172 | 9,387 (about 22.3%) | 5,856 |
| Out-of-state US | 39,420 | 8,086 (about 20.5%) | 1,608 |
| International | 8,931 | 930 (about 10.4%) | 155 |
The middle 50% SAT of enrolled first-years was 1330 to 1490 (78% submitted the SAT), and the ACT range was 29 to 33. International applicants are admitted at about half the rate of US applicants, and only 155 enrolled. You are competing for a small number of places, so your grades and test scores need to sit inside or above those ranges.
University of Florida tuition for international students (2026-27)
UF’s Office for Student Financial Affairs publishes this 2026-27 budget for an out-of-state freshman living on campus. Tuition and fees are estimates for students entering for the first time and taking 30 credits a year.
| Cost item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition and fees | $34,620 |
| Housing and food | $14,190 |
| Books and supplies | $1,220 |
| Transportation | $1,700 |
| Personal | $2,224 |
| Federal loan fees | $56 |
| Total budget | $54,010 |
UF’s International Center uses a different figure for your I-20. Its 2026-27 estimate is $54,461 for an undergraduate, which includes $3,185 for mandatory health insurance and $1,000 for between-term expenses but uses a tuition figure of $30,886. The two offices measure slightly different things, so prepare to show the higher amount. The International Center also advises arriving with about $20,000 available for deposits, tuition, books and insurance in the first weeks, and says fee payment cannot be deferred.
University of Florida scholarships for international students
UF’s Common Data Set states that institutional scholarship or grant aid is not available to degree-seeking nonresident undergraduates. In plain terms:
- No need-based aid for international students, and no CSS Profile, ISFAA or UF aid form to file.
- No UF merit scholarships for international first-years were listed on the official pages I checked.
- US federal aid and Florida state programmes are only for eligible US citizens and residents.
- Outside scholarships from your government, employer or a foundation are the only realistic support.
If you need a funded place, look at private colleges in our best American scholarships list and the scholarships for African students roundup. UF’s selling point is its low price.
University of Florida admission requirements for international students
- Common App: UF accepts first-year applications only through the Common App.
- Application fee: $30, paid by card, unless you qualify for a waiver.
- UF Supplement: a few short-answer questions inside the Common App.
- Personal essay: the Common App essay. UF describes it as a chance to tell them something they would not learn elsewhere in your application.
- Transcripts: at least four full years of secondary school records, including current courses, in the original language with a certified word-for-word English translation. Unofficial copies are uploaded to the Gator Portal; official copies are needed if you enrol.
- Credential evaluation: a course-by-course evaluation with GPA calculation from a NACES member for all non-US coursework, received by the materials deadline.
- SAT, ACT or CLT score: required, self-reported or sent officially by the materials deadline.
- English proficiency: TOEFL or IELTS unless you are exempt.
If you attend a school outside the US that does not use US-style grading, you do not complete UF’s STARS self-reported academic record. US-curriculum schools abroad usually do. Honors Program and Innovation Academy applicants write an extra essay.
Testing policy
Board of Governors regulation 6.002 requires all first-year students at Florida’s public universities to submit an ACT, CLT or SAT score. UF has no preference among them and superscores each. Scores that arrive after the materials deadline are considered only if space remains. The SAT and TOEFL code is 5812, and the ACT code is 0758.
English requirements
UF’s international transfer page lists a TOEFL iBT minimum of 80 and an IELTS Academic minimum of 6.0, with scores valid for two years. Students from a list of 42 English-speaking countries are exempt, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Botswana, Liberia, the United Kingdom, Canada and Sri Lanka (India is not on it). The freshman pages I checked did not repeat these numbers, and I found no Duolingo policy on UF’s undergraduate pages, so confirm your test with the admissions office before you book it.
UF deadlines for fall 2027
| Plan | Application deadline | Materials deadline | Decision | Confirm by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Early Decision (binding, closed) | 15 October 2026 | 22 October 2026 | 11 December 2026 | 8 January 2027 |
| Early Action | 1 November 2026 | 8 November 2026 | 22 January 2027 | 1 May 2027 |
| Regular Decision | 15 January 2027 | 22 January 2027 | 19 March 2027 | 1 May 2027 |
UF labels these as its 2026-27 application deadlines, which is the cycle for fall 2027 entry. A non-refundable $200 tuition deposit is due when you confirm. Credential evaluations take time, so international applicants with non-US coursework should order theirs well before the materials deadline.
Deadline
Early Action closes on 1 November 2026 and your credential evaluation, transcripts and test score must arrive by 8 November. If your evaluation will not be ready, apply Regular Decision by 15 January 2027 instead.
How to write the UF essay and short answers
UF’s personal essay and supplement are your only chance to show who you are, because UF does not ask for recommendation letters on its freshman page. UF lists the short-answer prompts inside the Common App; read them there before you plan your answers.
- Answer each short question directly in your first sentence. Readers move quickly through thousands of files.
- Use the personal essay for something the transcript and activities list cannot show, such as a responsibility, a problem you solved or how you think.
- Connect your story to what you want to study. UF admits you to a major, so a clear academic direction helps.
- Keep it in your own voice. Plain English is fine.
A short sample opening, for illustration:
“My grandmother’s maize harvest fell by half the year the rains came late, and nobody in our town could tell her why the next field, three kilometres away, did better. I started measuring the soil after school with a borrowed pH kit.”
For a student interested in UF’s agricultural and life sciences programmes, an opening like this points straight to a major.
What happens after you apply
- Gator Portal: UF emails your login. Upload transcripts and check your checklist there.
- Materials deadline: credential evaluation, transcripts and test scores must arrive by 8 November (EA) or 22 January (RD).
- Decision: admit, deny or defer for Early Action on 22 January 2027; admit, deny, waitlist or a Pathways offer for Regular Decision on 19 March 2027.
- Confirm: pay the $200 deposit by 1 May 2027.
- I-20: show funds of at least UF’s estimated expenses, receive your I-20, pay the SEVIS fee and book your visa interview.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Assuming UF is test-optional. It is not; state rules require a score.
- Ordering a document-by-document evaluation instead of a course-by-course evaluation with GPA.
- Using an evaluator that is not a NACES member.
- Booking an English test when your country is on the exemption list.
- Applying Early Action with documents that will arrive after 8 November.
- Expecting a scholarship offer with admission. UF does not award institutional aid to nonresidents.
Costs that aid will not cover
- Credential evaluation fees and certified translations before you even apply.
- Health insurance of $3,185 a year, which UF’s budget for financial aid leaves out but the I-20 budget includes.
- About $20,000 in start-up cash in your first weeks.
- Flights, visa and SEVIS fees.
- Extra programme fees charged by some colleges in the upper years.
Majors and strengths at UF
UF is a large university with strong engineering, business (the Warrington College of Business), agriculture and life sciences, health professions, journalism and communications. It has invested heavily in artificial intelligence teaching across subjects. Pre-health students also benefit from UF Health, the academic medical centre on the same campus.
Campus and city
UF is in Gainesville, a university city in north-central Florida, with the beaches and Orlando’s theme parks a few hours’ drive away. The campus is large and green, with Lake Alice on the grounds, and student life centres on Gator sports, especially football at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Rents in Gainesville are lower than in Miami or Orlando, which helps keep total costs down.
Graduate admissions at UF
Graduate applications go through UF’s Graduate School and the individual department, with deadlines and English scores set by each programme. Many doctoral students are supported through assistantships that can cover tuition, while most master’s students pay their own way. Check the funding information on the department page before you apply.

UF is the cheapest of the four by a wide margin. If you are also looking at Florida’s other public universities, see our guide to the University of South Florida.
Who should apply to UF
- Students who can pay about $55,000 to $58,000 a year including insurance, and want a top public university at a lower price.
- Students who are comfortable sitting the SAT, ACT or CLT.
- Applicants from English-exempt countries such as Nigeria, Ghana or Kenya, who save on English tests.
- Students drawn to engineering, agriculture, business or pre-health on a big campus.
Students who need scholarships from the university itself should not choose UF for that reason, because it does not offer them to nonresidents.
