UNC Chapel Hill Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

UNC Chapel Hill Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
UNC Chapel Hill admits about 15% of international applicants, charges out-of-state students $70,264 for 2026-27 and gives internationals no need-based aid. Here are the tests, English scores, Morehead-Cain route and the 15 January 2027 deadline.

UNC Chapel Hill admission requirements for international students are short on paper: the Common Application with UNC’s questions, an official transcript and school report, one recommendation from a core-subject teacher, an English proficiency score if English is not your first language, and an $85 fee. For the 2026-27 cycle UNC dropped its two supplemental short answers, and SAT or ACT scores are optional for most applicants. What makes UNC hard for students from abroad is money. International students are not eligible for need-based aid, so unless you win a merit scholarship such as Morehead-Cain, you pay the full out-of-state cost.

UNC is ranked No. 5 among public universities by U.S. News, and its Common Data Set for 2025-26 shows 1,461 of 9,756 international applicants admitted, about 15%. For fall 2027 entry, the Early Action deadline of 15 October 2026 has passed, so the deadline now open is Regular Decision on 15 January 2027. A year at UNC for an out-of-state student costs about $70,264 in 2026-27. Everything below was checked on UNC’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

UNC says the 2027 result extends its run in the top five public universities to 25 years. The best-value ranking applies to North Carolina residents; it does not make UNC cheap for you.

ACT middle 50% (enrolled)29 to 34

UNC’s own news release counted 84,317 applicants in total for fall 2025, a record. The Common Data Set figure is lower because it counts only first-time, first-year applicants in a standard way. The class that arrived in fall 2025 came from 80 countries. For fall 2026, UNC enrolled its largest first-year class ever, 5,319 students from 98 countries, with a middle 50% SAT of 1400 to 1530.

UNC is a North Carolina institution first. In-state students are admitted at about four times the out-of-state rate, and international students compete for a small share of seats. You need a top record from your own school to be competitive.

UNC Chapel Hill tuition for international students (2026-27)

International students pay the out-of-state rate. UNC’s Office of Scholarships and Student Aid publishes this 2026-27 budget for a full-time undergraduate.

Cost itemLiving on campusLiving off campus
Tuition and fees$49,602$49,602
Housing$9,168$9,490
Food$6,702$6,702
Books and supplies$638$638
Transportation$2,050$2,050
Personal$2,048$2,048
Loan fees (only if your aid includes loans)$56$56
Total$70,264$70,586

Since international students do not receive US federal loans, your real on-campus figure is about $70,208 before flights and insurance. Four years at today’s prices is about $281,000. UNC’s visa rules ask you to prove funds for your whole degree programme, so a sponsor letter covering one year is not enough.

UNC Chapel Hill scholarships for international students

UNC states that international students are not eligible for need-based financial aid, and that extra help is not available after you enrol. So you do not file the CSS Profile, the ISFAA or any UNC aid form. The FAFSA and CSS deadlines on UNC’s dates page (1 December and 1 March) apply to US applicants.

Merit is the route that remains, and it is narrow:

  • Morehead-Cain Scholarship: four years of tuition, fees, housing, meals, books and a laptop, plus funded summers. International students enter through a nominating school or through UNC’s Admissions Referral Program, which only looks at Early Action applicants. The 2026 round closed on 1 October 2026; the deadline for the next round is 1 October 2027. Our Morehead-Cain scholarship guide explains both routes.
  • Robertson Scholars Leadership Program: a joint Duke and UNC award. Read our Duke scholarships guide for how it fits with Duke’s own funding.
  • Outside funding: government or foundation scholarships from your home country are the realistic option for most students.

If you are not at a nominating school and miss Early Action, you have no UNC scholarship route in this cycle. That is the main reason to plan a year ahead.

UNC Chapel Hill admission requirements for international students

  1. Common Application: personal essay, activities and UNC’s questions, including any college courses you have taken.
  2. Application fee: $85, or a waiver requested by your school counsellor.
  3. Official transcript and school report: sent securely by your school. If your school does not issue English transcripts, send an official English translation with the original.
  4. One recommendation: from a teacher who taught you English, maths, science, social science or a world language.
  5. English proficiency score: required if you are not a US citizen or permanent resident and English is not your first language.
  6. Optional interests: Honors Carolina, the Global Gap Year Fellowship or Carolina Global Launch.

Do not send bank statements with your application. Financial documents come later, through International Student and Scholar Services, after you are admitted.

Testing policy

From the 2026-27 academic year, applicants with a weighted GPA of 2.8 or higher on a 4.0 scale do not have to send SAT or ACT scores. If your school does not use that scale, an average above B+ also exempts you. Applicants below that line need an ACT of 17 or an SAT of 930. UNC reads self-reported scores and superscores across test dates. Given that the middle 50% SAT is 1400 to 1530, I would only send a score at or above about 1400.

English requirements

UNC accepts TOEFL, IELTS, the Duolingo English Test and Cambridge C1 or C2. It publishes typical scores of admitted students, not minimums:

TestTypical score at UNC
TOEFL iBT (taken on or after 21 January 2026)5 or higher (new 1 to 6 scale)
TOEFL iBT (taken before 21 January 2026)100 or higher
IELTS Academic7.5 or higher
Duolingo English Test130 or higher
Cambridge C1 Advanced185 or higher

You may qualify for a waiver if you have lived in an English-speaking country for the last four years or attended an English-speaking school for at least the last four years. Your answers in the application decide this automatically. SAT and ACT scores do not count as English proof. UNC’s TOEFL code is C182.

How to write your UNC essays

UNC announced in June 2026 that it was removing the two short-answer supplemental questions from the 2026-27 application. That leaves your Common App personal essay and the activities list as the main places where readers meet you. Honors Carolina applicants still write one extra short response; check its prompt in the application.

With only one essay, every line counts. UNC’s former prompts asked about community, identity and the people around you, and that tells you what its readers value: students who will add to campus life outside the classroom.

  • Write about one specific thing you did for or with other people, and what you learned from it.
  • Put your school and country in context briefly, so a reader in North Carolina understands what was normal and what was unusual.
  • Use the activities list for the full range of your work, and keep the essay for depth.
  • Do not repeat your grades in the essay. The transcript already shows them.

A short sample opening, for illustration:

“On Saturday mornings our street’s football pitch became a classroom. I had promised three younger boys I would help them pass the mathematics paper I failed the first time, and by the second week there were eleven of them and one borrowed whiteboard.”

What happens after you apply

  1. Materials check: make sure your transcript, school report, recommendation and English score arrive by 21 February 2027.
  2. Decision: Regular Decision results come by 31 March 2027.
  3. Accept by 1 May: confirm enrolment and pay the deposit.
  4. Financial documentation: International Student and Scholar Services tells you what proof of funds it needs for the I-20. Check whether your country limits how much money can be sent abroad.
  5. Visa: pay the SEVIS fee, book an F-1 visa interview and plan your travel to Chapel Hill.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Missing Early Action and then hoping for a Morehead-Cain referral. Referrals only come from Early Action.
  • Converting grades themselves instead of sending the official transcript with a certified translation.
  • Sending a test score well below the middle 50% because it is “good for my country”.
  • Relying on an IELTS of 6.5 when UNC’s typical admitted score is 7.5.
  • Planning to fund only the first year and look for help later. UNC says there is no extra help after enrolment.

Costs that aid will not cover

  • Flights between home and Chapel Hill; UNC’s $2,050 transport line covers local travel.
  • Living costs between the end of one term and the arrival of the next semester’s money, which UNC specifically warns about.
  • Visa and SEVIS fees.
  • Health insurance, which you should confirm with International Student and Scholar Services.
  • Summer housing if you stay for research or work.

Majors and strengths at UNC

UNC’s undergraduate business programme at Kenan-Flagler is ranked sixth overall by U.S. News, nursing is tied for sixth, and psychology is tied for twelfth. It is also a major centre for public health, journalism and media, biology and chemistry. Most students start in the College of Arts and Sciences and apply to professional schools such as business and nursing later.

Campus and city

Chapel Hill is a college town in central North Carolina. Together with Durham and Raleigh it forms the Research Triangle, home to Duke, NC State and a large cluster of research and tech companies. UNC was chartered in 1789 and is one of the oldest public universities in the United States. The town is calm, green and student-centred, with the airport at Raleigh-Durham about half an hour away by car.

Graduate admissions at UNC

Master’s and doctoral programmes are run by The Graduate School and the professional schools, such as Kenan-Flagler, the Gillings School of Global Public Health and the School of Law. Each sets its own deadlines and English scores. Doctoral students at UNC are commonly supported through assistantships and fellowships, while most professional master’s students pay their own way. Check the programme’s funding page before applying.

Who should apply to UNC Chapel Hill

  • Students who can pay about $70,000 a year, or who have an outside sponsor for the full degree.
  • Students at a Morehead-Cain nominating school, or strong students who planned for Early Action.
  • Applicants interested in business, nursing, public health, journalism or the sciences at a large research university.
  • Students who would enjoy a college town over a big city.

If you need need-based aid, UNC is not the right choice, because it does not give it to international students.
