The University of Virginia admission requirements for international students are the same as for American applicants: a Common Application, your school transcript and school report, one teacher evaluation, and, if English is not your first language, an English test score that UVA strongly encourages. SAT and ACT scores are optional for fall 2027. The hard truth sits on the money side. UVA says it has no scholarship or loan funds for foreign nationals, and it advises you not to apply unless you can pay the full cost yourself. The one exception is students at a United World College, who can receive need-based support through the Davis Foundation.
If you can fund it, UVA is one of the strongest public universities in the United States. It admitted 10,086 of 64,457 first-year applicants for fall 2025, an offer rate of about 15.6%. For fall 2027 entry, the Early Decision and Early Action deadlines are both 1 November 2026, and Regular Decision closes on 5 January 2027. A first-year student in the College of Arts and Sciences from outside Virginia should budget between $83,286 and $84,976 for 2026-27. I checked all of this on UVA’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
University of Virginia ranking
U.S. News published its 2027 Best Colleges edition on 22 September 2026. UVA kept the same national position as the year before and stayed fourth among public universities.
| Ranking | UVA position |
|---|---|
| National Universities, U.S. News 2027 edition | #26 (also #26 in the 2026 edition) |
| Top Public Schools, U.S. News 2027 edition | #4 (unchanged) |
Ranking matters less than fit, but it explains the competition. Only Berkeley, UCLA and Michigan sit above UVA among public universities in that list, and all three are also hard to afford from abroad. Our guides to UC Berkeley and Michigan cover them.
University of Virginia acceptance rate and class profile
UVA’s admission statistics page reports the class that entered in fall 2025. The Common Data Set for 2025-26 adds the split by residency, which is where international applicants can see their own odds.
| Measure (fall 2025 entry) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Completed first-year applications | 64,457 |
| Offers of admission | 10,086 (about 15.6%) |
| First-year students enrolled | 3,986 |
| International applicants (CDS 2025-26) | 7,816 |
| International applicants admitted (CDS 2025-26) | 908 (about 11.6%) |
| Out-of-state US applicants admitted (CDS 2025-26) | 5,086 of 39,271 (about 13.0%) |
| Early Decision admits (CDS 2025-26) | 1,376 of 4,969 (about 27.7%) |
| SAT middle 50% (enrolled) | Reading and Writing 700 to 760; Math 710 to 780 |
| ACT composite middle 50% | 32 to 35 |
Two things stand out. International applicants are admitted at a lower rate than Virginians, which is normal for a state university that must serve its own residents first. And Early Decision admits at a much higher rate than the overall pool. That gap partly reflects who applies early, so do not read it as a guaranteed boost. Only apply ED if UVA is clearly your first choice and your family can pay the full bill, because ED is binding.
University of Virginia tuition for international students (2026-27)
International students pay the non-Virginian rate. Tuition differs by school and by year, because some programmes charge more once you enter them in your third year. These are UVA’s official 2026-27 figures for students living in Charlottesville.
| School and year | Tuition and fees | Total cost of attendance |
|---|---|---|
| Arts and Sciences, 1st year | $62,054 | $83,286 to $84,976 |
| Arts and Sciences, 3rd and 4th year | $65,278 | $87,674 to $89,364 |
| Engineering, 1st year | $73,582 | $94,814 to $96,504 |
| Nursing, 1st year | $67,072 | $88,304 to $89,994 |
| Architecture, 1st year | $63,420 | $84,652 to $86,342 |
| Commerce, 3rd and 4th year | $75,266 | $97,662 to $99,352 |
Living costs for a first-year student are budgeted at $8,730 for housing, $7,340 for food, $1,540 for books and supplies and $3,000 for personal expenses. Travel is budgeted at $550 to $2,240, which is why each total is a range. UVA had not yet set the 2026-27 student health insurance rate when I checked, and students without comparable cover are charged the premium on top.
Over four years in Arts and Sciences, that adds up to roughly $340,000 or more. That is the number your family has to be ready for.
University of Virginia scholarships for international students
UVA’s international page is direct: there are no scholarship or loan funds for foreign nationals. So there is no CSS Profile, no ISFAA and no UVA aid form for you to file as an international first-year. Admission is effectively need-aware in practice, because you are asked to show you can pay before you enrol.
- United World College students: if you attend a UWC school, you can receive need-based support through the Davis Foundation (Davis UWC Scholars Program). Ask the admission office for the current process.
- Jefferson Scholarship: a privately funded award from the Jefferson Scholars Foundation that gives full financial support for four years at UVA. The Foundation says it does not consider citizenship status, but you must be nominated by your school, and not every region can nominate. Nomination materials were due on 1 December. Check with the Foundation whether your school abroad is eligible to nominate.
- External funding: government scholarships, company sponsorships and foundation awards from your home country are the realistic route for most students. Our list of the best American scholarships for international students shows which US universities fund international students in full.
After admission you complete UVA’s Financial Guarantee for Foreign National Applicants, which is how the university confirms you can pay before it issues your I-20.
University of Virginia admission requirements for international students
There is no separate international application. You follow the same instructions as everyone else and choose one of five undergraduate schools: Arts and Sciences, Architecture, Engineering, Nursing or Kinesiology. You also list two academic interests, though most students only declare a major at the end of their first or second year.
- Common Application: the student sections, activities and personal essay, submitted online.
- Secondary school report: sent by your counsellor with your school profile and transcripts.
- One teacher evaluation: from a teacher of an academic subject. This is required.
- Counsellor recommendation: optional when your counsellor cannot write one; another administrator or an academic teacher can stand in.
- English test: TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency, or the Duolingo English Test, encouraged if English is not your first language or you have studied in English for under two years.
- Optional arts portfolio: through SlideRoom, only for exceptional arts talent.
- Optional interview substitute: an InitialView or Vericant evaluation, booked by you with the provider. UVA offers no other interviews.
UVA does not accept résumés, research papers or other supplementary items outside the arts. It also asks you to sign an honour statement that your work is your own; the instructions say AI may help you brainstorm or check grammar, but you must not paste AI-written text into your essays.
Testing policy
UVA is test-optional for fall 2027 first-year applicants and says there is no disadvantage if you leave scores out. If you do send them, self-report SAT, ACT, AP or IB scores in the application. UVA superscores, and only admitted students who enrol with scores send official reports. The codes are 5820 for the SAT and 4412 for the ACT.
English requirements
UVA does not publish a minimum TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score. It reads the score as part of the whole file. Because the middle 50% of admitted students score 700 or more on SAT Reading and Writing, I would aim for scores that show you can handle reading-heavy seminars from week one.
UVA deadlines for fall 2027
| Plan | Your deadline | Counsellor and teacher deadline | Decision by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early Decision (binding) | 1 November 2026 | 8 November 2026 | 15 December 2026 |
| Early Action | 1 November 2026 | 8 November 2026 | 15 February 2027 |
| Regular Decision | 5 January 2027 | 10 January 2027 | 1 April 2027 |
Early Decision admits must pay their deposit by 15 January. Early Action and Regular Decision admits have until 1 May. If you need to switch between ED and EA, UVA asks you to email by 5 p.m. on 6 November. UVA does not state a time zone on the instructions page, so treat every deadline as US Eastern Time and submit a day early.
Deadline
Early Decision and Early Action close on 1 November 2026, three days from the date this guide was checked. If your transcript, counsellor report or teacher letter is not ready, Regular Decision on 5 January 2027 is the safer choice.
How to write the UVA essays
UVA’s instructions page lists no UVA-specific essay for most applicants, so your Common App personal essay carries the writing part of the file. Essay guides report that Nursing applicants answer one extra short question about a health-care experience; check the UVA questions inside the Common App before you write, because the university can change them.
Since one essay does the work, make it specific. UVA runs on student self-governance and an honour code, so readers respond to evidence of responsibility, curiosity and how you treat other people. A story about running something small and real usually beats a list of titles.
- Pick one moment and stay in it. Readers remember a scene, not a summary of your life.
- Show what you did and what changed because of it, with one or two concrete details.
- Keep your country’s context, but explain it in a line. Do not assume the reader knows your exam system.
- Write it yourself. The honour statement is taken seriously.
A short sample opening, for illustration:
“The generator in our school lab died every evening at seven, so the four of us who wanted to finish the chemistry practicals learned to work by torchlight. By March I was the one who kept the torch batteries in my bag, and the logbook of who had borrowed which beaker.”
It works because it starts inside a real situation and quietly shows responsibility without claiming it.
What happens after you apply
- Portal access: UVA sends you a student portal login. Updates, including new test scores, go through the portal, not by email.
- Review: readers look at your school context, grades, rigour, teacher evaluation and essay. Tests count only if you send them.
- Decision: by 15 December (ED), 15 February (EA) or 1 April (RD).
- Financial Guarantee: admitted international students submit the Financial Guarantee for Foreign National Applicants and proof of funds.
- I-20 and visa: once your funds are confirmed, UVA’s international office issues the I-20, you pay the SEVIS fee and book an F-1 visa interview.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Applying Early Decision without confirming the family can pay the full non-Virginian cost every year.
- Assuming UVA will offer a partial scholarship after admission. It does not have funds for foreign nationals.
- Using a paid agent to prepare documents. UVA says it does not work with agents, and fraudulent documents can lead to a rescinded offer.
- Sending extra material such as a CV or research paper. UVA will not read it.
- Leaving the teacher evaluation until the last week before 8 November or 10 January.
- Skipping the English test when your schooling was not fully in English.
Costs that aid will not cover
For a UVA student from abroad, everything is out of pocket, but some costs surprise families because they sit outside the official budget.
- F-1 visa application fee and the SEVIS I-901 fee, paid before you travel.
- Flights home, which can exceed the $2,240 travel ceiling in UVA’s budget if you fly from Africa or Asia.
- Student health insurance, whose 2026-27 rate was not set when I checked.
- Higher tuition once you enter Commerce, Data Science or Batten in your third year.
- Summer housing and living costs if you stay in the US between years.
Majors and strengths at UVA
UVA is known for its McIntire School of Commerce, which students enter after their first two years, as well as Engineering, Nursing, the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, and its School of Data Science. In Arts and Sciences, economics, politics, foreign affairs, psychology, biology and English are large and well regarded. Because most students declare late, you can start in Arts and Sciences and move towards Commerce or Data Science by application.
Campus and city
UVA sits in Charlottesville, a small city in central Virginia about two to three hours by road from Washington, DC. Thomas Jefferson founded the university, and his Academical Village at the centre of the campus is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Monticello. Student life is organised around the honour system and student self-governance. Charlottesville is quiet and walkable around the university, with far less city life than Austin or San Diego.
Graduate admissions at UVA
Graduate and professional programmes do not use the undergraduate process. You apply directly to the school, such as the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Darden for the MBA or Batten for public policy, each with its own deadlines and English score rules. PhD offers at research universities like UVA usually come with funding through fellowships or assistantships, while most master’s students pay their own way. Check the funding statement on each programme page before you apply.
UVA compared with similar public universities
| University | U.S. News 2027 (National) | Acceptance rate | Aid for international undergraduates | Out-of-state tuition and fees 2026-27 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Virginia | #26 | 15.6% (fall 2025) | None, except UWC students and the nominated Jefferson Scholarship | $62,054 (Arts and Sciences, 1st year) |
| UNC Chapel Hill | #27 (tie) | 16.7% (CDS 2025-26) | No need-based aid; Morehead-Cain by nomination or referral | $49,602 |
| UC San Diego | #29 | 27.2% (fall 2026) | No need-based aid | $54,858 tuition and systemwide fees |
| UT Austin | #34 (tie) | 22.2% (fall 2025) | Small ISSS scholarships, including a $5,000 award for students educated in Africa | $42,554 to $51,106 |
If you need a full scholarship, a public university is rarely the answer. Private colleges that meet full need for international students, such as Amherst, Yale and MIT, are the better fit.
Who should apply to UVA
- Students whose family, sponsor or government scholarship can cover about $85,000 a year for four years.
- Students at a United World College, who have access to Davis need-based support.
- Strong students at a school that can nominate for the Jefferson Scholarship.
- Students who want a liberal arts start inside a big research university, with the option to move into Commerce or Data Science later.
Students who need significant aid should not apply to UVA expecting help. Spend that application slot on a college that meets full need.
