Johns Hopkins University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Johns Hopkins University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Johns Hopkins is need-aware for international students but meets 100% of need without loans for those it admits. Here are the 6.4% acceptance rate, 2026-27 costs, SAT and English rules, the essay and fall 2027 deadlines.

Johns Hopkins University admission requirements for international students are the same as for US applicants, with two additions. You apply through the Common App or Coalition on Scoir with one 350-word Hopkins essay, SAT or ACT scores, two teacher letters, a counsellor report and a $70 fee or waiver. Every international applicant must also submit the Certification of Finances, and anyone seeking aid adds the CSS Profile or the free JHU international aid form. Hopkins is need-aware for international students and meets 100% of demonstrated need for those it admits, without loans.

For fall 2027 entry, Early Decision I closes on 1 November 2026, and Early Decision II and Regular Decision both close on 2 January 2027. Hopkins admitted about 6.4% of first-year applicants in its 2024-25 Common Data Set, and the 2026-27 first-year budget is $94,858. I checked these details on Hopkins admissions, financial aid and institutional research pages on 29 October 2026.

Johns Hopkins ranking

Johns Hopkins is tied at #9 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition, released on 22 September 2026, alongside Northwestern and the University of Chicago. Duke was #8 and Penn #7 in the same edition.

Hopkins is best known for medicine, public health and biomedical research, but the undergraduate programme sits on the Homewood campus and covers the arts, sciences and engineering. Strong rankings in those graduate fields are one reason so many pre-med and engineering students apply.

Johns Hopkins acceptance rate and class profile

Hopkins’ 2024-25 Common Data Set, covering students who started in fall 2024, reports 45,895 applicants and 2,954 admitted, an acceptance rate of about 6.4%. Early Decision is easier on paper: 825 of 7,028 ED applicants were admitted, about 11.7%. Hopkins does not publish a separate admit rate for international applicants.

Only about one international student in ten receives aid. That figure matters more than the overall acceptance rate if you need money, because it shows how tight the international aid budget is.

Johns Hopkins tuition for international students in 2026-27

International students pay the same tuition as everyone else. The table below is Hopkins’ 2026-27 estimated cost of attendance for a first-year living on campus.

Cost item (2026-27, first-year on campus)Amount
Tuition (12 or more credits a semester)$68,670
Matriculation fee (one time)$500
Housing$13,073
Food$8,894
Books, course materials and supplies$1,377
Personal expenses$1,606
Transportation$738
Total$94,858
Student health insurance (added to your bill)$3,624 a year

Health insurance is listed separately. Students on F-1 or J-1 visas cannot waive the Hopkins plan, so international students should treat the real first-year figure as $98,482. In the second year, on-campus housing rises to $14,444 and the total to $95,729.

Johns Hopkins scholarships for international students: how aid works

Hopkins’ main support is need-based. For international students it is need-aware, so your financial situation is considered when the admission decision is made. Once you are admitted with aid, Hopkins promises to meet 100% of your demonstrated need without loans. Applicants in ED I, ED II and Regular Decision get the same aid consideration.

  • Hopkins Scholarship: the main need-based grant, renewed each year according to need.
  • International Scholarship: need- and merit-based support for incoming international students, subject to available funds, renewable for up to eight semesters.
  • Hodson Trust Scholarship: merit award for fewer than 20 first-years a year, covering a significant portion of tuition, renewable with a 3.0 GPA. Everyone who applies is considered automatically; Hopkins does not say whether international students are eligible.
  • Charles R. Westgate Scholarship in Engineering: renewable for up to four years in the Whiting School with a 3.0 GPA.
  • Davis UWC Scholars: graduates of United World Colleges who qualify for need-based aid may get additional support.
  • Outside scholarships: first-years can hold up to $4,500 in private scholarships before Hopkins reduces its grant.

Hopkins’ 2024-25 Common Data Set shows 471 non-resident undergraduates receiving institutional aid, at an average of $16,051 each. That average mixes small and full awards, so do not read it as a typical package.

Hopkins gives no CSS Profile fee waivers to international applicants. If the fee is a problem, or College Board payments do not work from your country, use the free ISFAA instead. It takes five to seven days to process, after which your CSS Profile shows as waived. You can correct your CSS Profile only once a year, so check it before you submit.

Testing policy for fall 2027

Hopkins requires the SAT or ACT for first-year applicants. You can self-report scores and send official reports only if you enrol. Hopkins superscores, taking your highest section scores across dates; ACT Science and Writing are not counted. AP results are optional but can help.

  • Early Decision applicants should finish testing by October of the final school year.
  • Regular Decision applicants should finish by December.
  • If you plan to test later, say so on the application.

English requirements: TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo

Hopkins recommends TOEFL, IELTS, the Duolingo English Test or a Cambridge English exam if English is not your main language or you have not attended an English-language school for the last three years. It does not publish minimum scores.

There is one clear rule of thumb on the testing page: send an English test if your SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score is below 690, or both your ACT Reading and English scores are below 30. Students from English-medium schools in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or South Africa with strong SAT reading scores usually will not need one.

Application parts

  1. Common App or Coalition on Scoir with your personal statement, activities (family and work responsibilities count) and honours.
  2. Hopkins supplemental essay (350 words).
  3. Secondary School Report with counsellor letter, transcript and school profile.
  4. Two teacher evaluations from teachers of two different academic subjects.
  5. Mid-year report, sent by your school in mid-February.
  6. SAT or ACT scores.
  7. Academic records: grades 9 to 11 or the equivalent, plus certificates or exam results such as O-Level, WAEC or IB. Non-English documents need a verified English translation. Leave GPA or class rank blank if your school does not use them.
  8. Certification of Finances and, for aid, the CSS Profile or ISFAA.
  9. Early Decision Agreement signed by you, a parent and your counsellor, for ED I or ED II.
  10. Optional: an extra letter, a résumé, or one Direct Matriculation Program application.

Biomedical engineering has no separate application. List it as your first-choice major.

The Johns Hopkins supplemental essay

Hopkins asks one question in up to 350 words. It asks what you have learned about engaging across differences and how it has shaped your views on building bridges, strengthening community and working with others.

How to write the Johns Hopkins essay

  • Pick one real disagreement or difference. A group project where people saw a problem differently, a mixed family, a debate team or a mosque and church youth exchange all work.
  • Describe what you did as well as what you felt. Readers want to see you listen, adjust and act.
  • End with a change in how you work. Say what you now do differently with people.
  • Connect it to Hopkins lightly. One sentence on how you would bring this to a lab group, a residence hall or a club is enough.
  • Avoid a travel story told from the outside. A week of volunteering abroad is weaker than a difference you live with every day.

An opening written for illustration only:

“My Igbo grandmother and my Hausa classmate argued about pepper soup for twenty minutes before I realised they were describing the same recipe.”

The opening is specific and a little funny, and it sets up a story about listening. The rest of the essay should move from that kitchen to how you now run your science club or study group.

Fall 2027 application deadlines

Regular Decision2 January 202715 January 202724 March 20271 May 2027

Early Decision is binding. If you are admitted with an aid award you can afford, you must withdraw your other applications. Because Hopkins treats aid the same way in every round, ED does not get you a bigger package, but its higher admit rate can help a student who is certain.

Deadline warning

Early Decision I closes on 1 November 2026, and the CSS Profile or ISFAA for ED I is due on 15 November 2026. If your SAT or ACT will not be ready by October, use ED II or Regular Decision on 2 January 2027.

What happens after you apply

  1. Portal activation: Hopkins emails your applicant portal login. Upload the Certification of Finances there.
  2. Aid documents: submit the CSS Profile or ISFAA by the aid deadline; Hopkins may ask for more through IDOC.
  3. Mid-year report: your school sends it in mid-February.
  4. Decision: 11 December 2026 (ED I), 12 February 2027 (ED II) or 24 March 2027 (RD), with any aid offer.
  5. Reply: by the date for your round.
  6. Official scores: sent only after you enrol.
  7. Visa: the Office of International Services guides admitted students through the I-20 and F-1 visa process.

Majors and academic strengths

Undergraduates enter the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences or the Whiting School of Engineering. Hopkins is especially known for biomedical engineering, neuroscience, public health studies, international studies, and the natural sciences, and many undergraduates join research labs across the university.

Hopkins gives students a lot of room to combine majors and minors. Many students follow a pre-health track, but there is no direct pre-med major. Medical school admission is a separate process after graduation, and US medical schools admit few international students.

Campus and city

The Homewood campus is in north Baltimore, Maryland, about an hour from Washington, D.C. by train. Baltimore is a mid-sized port city, cheaper than New York or Boston, with the Johns Hopkins Hospital and medical campus on the east side of the city. Hopkins publishes separate on-campus budgets for first-year and second-year students, so plan on living in university housing for at least your first year.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Forgetting the Certification of Finances, which every international applicant must submit.
  • Paying for the CSS Profile when the free ISFAA is available.
  • Applying ED I without being sure your family can pay the amount Hopkins expects.
  • Assuming you can ask for aid after you are admitted.
  • Writing the essay about a one-off trip instead of a difference in your own life.
  • Sending untranslated documents.
  • Expecting the Hopkins name to lead to a US medical school place without checking how few international students they admit.

Costs aid doesn’t cover

  • SAT or ACT fees and any English test fees.
  • The CSS Profile fee if you use it rather than the free ISFAA.
  • The US visa application fee and SEVIS I-901 fee. Check current amounts on the US State Department and SEVP sites.
  • Flights beyond the $738 transportation allowance, which is set for US students.
  • Winter clothing for Baltimore, which can be well below freezing.
  • Summer housing if you stay for research and the lab cannot fund it.

Graduate admissions at Johns Hopkins

Graduate admission is run by each school: Krieger, Whiting, the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, SAIS, Carey Business School, Peabody and others. Each sets its own deadlines, tests and English minimums. PhD students are usually funded through the department; master’s funding is limited, so check the programme page before you apply.

Who should apply to Johns Hopkins

Apply if you have strong grades and scores and a real interest in research, whether in biology, engineering, public health or the social sciences. Hopkins suits students who want a research university with a lot of freedom in their courses and a campus life that is busy but not huge.

If you need a full aid package, remember that only about one international student in ten receives aid. I would apply, but alongside need-blind options such as MIT and Yale.
