UC Irvine admission requirements for international students are the University of California rules: one UC application, four Personal Insight Questions of up to 350 words, your self-reported grades, proof of English if your schooling was not in English, and a $95 fee. UC Irvine does not consider the SAT or ACT, and it does not accept letters of recommendation. For fall 2027 the application must be submitted between 1 October and 30 November 2026.
UC Irvine admitted 35,954 of 124,232 first-year applicants for fall 2025, a 28.94% acceptance rate, and preliminary UC data shows about 30.3% for fall 2026. International applicants did better than average, at about 45.5%. Money is the bigger obstacle. The 2026-27 cost for a nonresident first-year living on campus is $84,476, and international students are not eligible for need-based aid at UCI. I checked these figures on UC Irvine and University of California pages on 29 October 2026.
UC Irvine ranking and headline numbers
UC Irvine is ranked #34 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition, tied with UC Davis and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. It placed 8th among public universities, its 12th straight year in the public top 10. In the U.S. News 2026 edition UCI was #32 overall and 9th among publics, its highest overall rank at that time.

UC Irvine acceptance rate and class profile
UCI’s own admitted student profile gives the full fall 2025 picture. Preliminary UC Office of the President (UCOP) tables give the fall 2026 admit counts by residency.
| Measure | Fall 2025 (UCI profile) | Fall 2026 (UCOP, preliminary) |
|---|---|---|
| First-year applicants | 124,232 | Not yet published by UCI |
| Admits | 35,954 | 38,165 |
| Acceptance rate | 28.94% | About 30.3% |
| International admits | Not reported | 9,967 |
| Admits from other US states | Not reported | 8,368 |
| California admits | Not reported | 19,830 |
| International share of applicants | Not reported | 17% |
| Weighted GPA, middle 50% | 4.04 to 4.27 (median 4.19) | Not yet published |
| Unweighted GPA, middle 50% | 3.84 to 4.00 (median 3.95) | Not yet published |
Roughly one in four fall 2026 admits was an international student. UCI calls these numbers a general guide to selectivity. Your major also matters, since popular majors such as computer science are usually harder to get into than the campus average.
I did not use a Common Data Set figure for UCI because I could not open the official 2025-26 file; the profile above is UCI’s own published data.
UC Irvine tuition for international students in 2026-27
UCI’s financial aid office publishes this budget for new undergraduates living on campus in 2026-27.
| Cost item (2026-27) | Nonresident (including international) | California resident |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition and fees (systemwide $15,588 + campus $4,701) | $20,289 | $20,289 |
| Nonresident supplemental tuition | $39,270 | $0 |
| Housing ($12,053) and food ($7,323) | $19,376 | $19,376 |
| Books and supplies | $1,512 | $1,512 |
| Personal | $2,801 | $2,801 |
| Transportation | $1,228 | $1,228 |
| Total | $84,476 | $45,206 |
The UCI budget does not show a health insurance line. UC Davis, a sister campus, lists $3,996 for health insurance and a $414 international student fee in its 2026-27 budget, so ask UCI what extra charges apply to F-1 students before you plan your budget. I would budget at least $88,000 for the first year to be safe.
UC Irvine scholarships for international students
UCI’s scholarship FAQ is direct about this.
- Need-based aid: international students do not qualify. Skip the FAFSA and the California Dream Act Application.
- Merit scholarships: international students may apply for scholarships and can be considered for merit awards.
- Distinguished scholarships: UCI names three, the Regents’ Scholarship, the Directors’ Scholarship and the Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship. Admissions considers new students automatically from the UC application. The Regents’ Scholarship page limits that award to US citizens, eligible non-citizens and AB130/AB131 students, so international students should not expect it.
- Campuswide scholarships: UCI runs scholarships that weigh academic excellence and leadership, but it does not list names or amounts for international students.
UCI does not publish dollar amounts for these merit awards. There is no CSS Profile, ISFAA or UCI financial aid form for international undergraduates. Plan your finances as if no university aid will come, and treat any merit award as a bonus.
If you need substantial funding, start with our list of US scholarships for international students and our US scholarship deadlines tracker.
UC Irvine admission requirements for international students: the application parts
- UC application: one form for all UC campuses. You add UC Irvine and choose a major.
- Citizenship and visa details: enter your country of citizenship and, if you are not a US citizen, your immigration status and visa type.
- School history: list all schools attended since grade 9, including schools outside the US.
- Self-reported grades: enter every course and grade. Do not send official transcripts now; keep your unofficial records beside you to avoid errors.
- Activities and awards: jobs, family duties, volunteering, clubs and prizes.
- Personal Insight Questions: four answers of up to 350 words each.
- English proficiency: report your score if your secondary school did not teach in English.
- Application fee: $95 per campus for international and non-immigrant applicants. Fee waivers are not available to international students.
UCI says clearly that it does not accept letters of recommendation. There is no interview.
What academic level UCI expects
UC reviews international students against their own school system. Finish secondary school at a level that would admit you to a strong university in your country, with good results in English and Mathematics. A-Level, IB and national exams such as WAEC are all reviewed in context; strong, consistent grades across the last three years matter most.
Testing policy
UC Irvine does not consider SAT or ACT scores for admission or for scholarships. After you enrol, scores may be used for class placement or to meet certain graduation requirements. Your English test is a separate requirement and still counts.
English requirements
UCI uses the UC systemwide minimums. Meet one of these by December of your final school year if your secondary education was not in English.
| Test or option | UC minimum |
|---|---|
| IELTS | 6.5 |
| TOEFL iBT or Home Edition | 80 before January 2026; 4.5 from January 2026 |
| Duolingo English Test | 115 |
| ACT English Language Arts | 24 |
| SAT Writing and Language (older SAT) | 31 |
| AP English Language or Literature | 3 or higher |
| IB English A | SL 6 or 7; HL 5, 6 or 7 |
| UC-transferable English composition course | Grade C or better |
UC only counts the highest composite score from one sitting, so MyBest TOEFL and IELTS One Skill Retake do not count. UC also says campuses may prefer scores above the minimum and may interview some applicants about their English.
UC Irvine deadline for fall 2027
| Step | Date |

| Submission period | 1 October to 30 November 2026 |
| First-year decisions | March 2027 |
| Statement of Intent to Register | 1 May 2027 |
| Final transcripts due | 1 July 2027 |
UC Irvine has no Early Action or Early Decision. Every first-year applicant, international or not, uses the same November window.
Deadline
The UC application closes on 30 November 2026 for fall 2027 entry. Once submitted, the $95 fee is owed for every campus you picked, even if you cancel later.
How to apply to UC Irvine, step by step
- Open the UC application and create your account.
- Add UC Irvine and any other UC campuses you want, then pick a major for each.
- Fill in citizenship, visa status and school history.
- Enter every course and grade exactly as on your records.
- Add activities and awards, with short, factual descriptions.
- Write your four PIQs.
- Report your English test score.
- Pay $95 per campus and submit before 30 November 2026.
- Set up your UCI applicant portal when the email arrives, and watch it for requests.
How to write the UC Irvine Personal Insight Questions, with a sample opening
UC offers eight questions and you choose four: leadership, creativity, a talent or skill, an educational opportunity or barrier, a significant challenge, a favourite academic subject, making your community better, and what sets you apart. Each answer can be up to 350 words, and all are weighted equally.
What works at UCI:
- Concrete detail. Name the task, the people, the numbers and the result.
- Context. A reader in California may not know what sitting WAEC, A-Levels or the Kenyan KCSE involves. Explain it in one line.
- Your major. If you apply for computer science or biology, one PIQ should show real work in that field.
- Variety. Four different parts of your life tell readers more than four versions of the same story.
Sample opening for the “educational opportunity or barrier” question (for illustration only):
“Our school had one computer lab and it opened for forty minutes a week. I wrote my first program on paper, then typed it in during those forty minutes, praying it would run.”
From there, explain what you built, how you got more access, and how you helped others in the same position.
What happens after you apply
- Applicant portal: UCI sends login details and any requests for information.
- Decision in March 2027: admit, waitlist or deny.
- Statement of Intent to Register by 1 May 2027, with a deposit.
- Final transcripts by 1 July 2027. UCI mainly accepts electronic transcripts. Your final grades must match what you reported.
- Proof of funds and I-20: show you can pay the full cost so UCI can issue your I-20.
- F-1 visa interview at a US embassy or consulate.
- Arrival and orientation in September 2027.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Sending recommendation letters. UCI will not read them.
- Listing SAT or ACT scores as a selling point. They are not used.
- Self-reporting grades carelessly. A gap between reported and final grades can cost you the offer.
- Skipping context. Not explaining your grading system or a hard year at home.
- Picking only impacted majors. If you want UCI badly, think about whether your second choice is realistic.
- Budgeting with resident figures. The resident total is $45,206; you will pay about $39,000 more.
Costs that aid does not cover
- Health insurance, which is not in UCI’s printed budget.
- Flights to Los Angeles or Orange County and back each year.
- The F-1 visa fee and SEVIS I-901 fee.
- Higher rent in Irvine after you leave university housing; Orange County is expensive.
- Transport, as some trips need a car or rideshare.
- A laptop suitable for your major.
- Increases in campus fees and housing after the first year.
UC Irvine graduate admissions for international students
Graduate applications go through UCI’s Graduate Division, and each programme sets its own deadline and test rules. International graduate applicants usually need TOEFL or IELTS unless their degree was taught in English. PhD students are often funded through fellowships, teaching assistantships or research assistantships; professional master’s programmes usually charge full fees. Read your programme’s page carefully for its fee and minimum scores.
Majors, campus and city
UCI offers a wide range of majors across its schools, including the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, the Samueli School of Engineering, biological sciences, social sciences, the arts and the Paul Merage School of Business. Biology and computing are among its largest fields.
The campus is in Irvine, a planned city in Orange County, Southern California, a few miles from the Pacific coast. It is generally safe and quiet, with Los Angeles about an hour away by road. The weather is mild all year, which many students from Africa and Asia appreciate.

- You are interested in computer science, biology, engineering or the social sciences.
