University of Michigan admission requirements for international students are those of a selective Common App university: the application with two Michigan essays, a teacher evaluation, a school report with your transcript, the $75 fee, and an English test such as TOEFL or IELTS. SAT and ACT scores are optional for the 2027 cycle. The catch for international families is cost. Michigan says students on temporary visas should expect to pay the full cost of attendance, about $88,394 for a first- or second-year student in 2026-27, and that it has “very limited opportunities” for scholarships.
Michigan received a record 109,112 first-year applications for fall 2025 and admitted 17,915, an acceptance rate of about 16.4%. It ranks No. 25 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition. For fall 2027 entry, Early Decision and Early Action close on 1 November 2026, and Regular Decision closes on 1 February 2027. I checked the facts below on Michigan’s admissions, financial aid and planning office pages on 29 October 2026, unless another source is named.
University of Michigan ranking
Michigan is No. 25 among National Universities (U.S. News 2027 edition, released September 2026). Poets&Quants reported that this was a fall of five places from No. 20 in the 2026 edition. Rankings aside, Michigan is one of the largest research universities in the US, and its engineering, business (Ross), economics and medicine-related programmes have strong reputations worldwide.
University of Michigan acceptance rate and class profile
Michigan’s 2025-26 Common Data Set and its Office of Budget and Planning cover the class that entered in fall 2025:
| Measure (fall 2025 entry) | Figure |
|---|---|
| First-year applicants | 109,112 |
| Admitted | 17,915 |
| Acceptance rate | About 16.4% |
| Enrolled first-years | 8,178 |
| International (nonresident) first-years enrolled | 391 |
| SAT middle 50% (enrolled, 55% submitted) | 1370 to 1530 |
| ACT middle 50% (enrolled, 18% submitted) | 32 to 34 |
Michigan does not publish an acceptance rate for international applicants. The 391 nonresident first-years were under 5% of the entering class, so international places are limited. Unlike many test-optional universities, more than half of Michigan’s enrolled class still sent an SAT score, so a strong score does help.
University of Michigan tuition for international students: 2026-27 costs
Michigan’s international students page gives estimated 2026-27 budgets for students on temporary visas in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA), the college most undergraduates join:
| Cost item (2026-27) | Lower division (first 54 credits) | Upper division (55+ credits) |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition and fees | $67,096 | $71,798 |
| Living expenses | $17,220 | $17,220 |
| Books and supplies | $1,220 | $1,220 |
| Transportation | $400 | $400 |
| Personal expenses | $2,458 | $2,458 |
| Total | $88,394 | $93,096 |
Tuition is charged by college and by level, so engineering, business and some other schools differ from LSA, and your tuition rises when you move into the upper division in your third year. Over four years in LSA, the published 2026-27 figures alone add up to about $363,000 before price increases.
University of Michigan scholarships for international students
Michigan’s financial aid office says international undergraduates on temporary visas are not eligible for US federal aid and that university scholarships for them are “very limited”. Its schools and colleges have “very limited funding” for international undergraduates. Here is what that means in practice:
- No separate scholarship application is needed. If a school or college has money for international students, you are considered from your admission file.
- Student athletes are handled through the U-M Athletic Department.
- A short-term university loan may be available in an emergency.
- Some US private lenders offer loans to international students, usually with a qualified US co-signer.
- Michigan points students to EducationUSA advising centres and to funding in their home countries.
Michigan’s admission review is need-blind, but for an international student that mostly means asking about money will not hurt you, because there is little money to ask for. Before you can get your visa document, you must show proof of enough funds to cover your costs, using Michigan’s Financial Resources Statement.
University of Michigan admission requirements for international students: the application
Application parts
- Common Application: including the Michigan questions and the two Michigan essays.
- Application fee: $75. Michigan says international students are not typically eligible for fee waivers.
- Teacher evaluation: one, from a core academic teacher or another non-relative who knows your classroom work.
- School Report or counsellor recommendation: sent with your official high school transcript.
- English proficiency: required for non-native speakers (see below).
- SAT or ACT: optional; self-reported scores are accepted, and Michigan uses your highest superscore.
- Portfolio or extra materials (some schools): the Ross School of Business, Taubman College, the Stamps School of Art and Design and the School of Music, Theatre and Dance ask for their own materials.
- Early Decision Agreement: signed by you, a parent and your counsellor if you apply ED.
Transcript rules vary by country. AP, IB and international credentials such as A-levels are considered in context whether or not you send test scores.
Testing policy
Michigan is test-optional for the 2027 application cycle. You choose whether to send SAT or ACT scores, and not sending them does not count against you. If you are admitted after self-reporting, you must send official scores (SAT code 1839, ACT code 2062).
English requirements
| Test | Michigan minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (before 21 January 2026) | 100, with at least 23 in listening and reading and 21 in speaking and writing |
| TOEFL iBT (from 21 January 2026) | 5 overall, with every section at 5 or higher |
| IELTS (Academic or Indicator) | 7.0, with every band at 6.5 or higher |
| PTE Academic | 68 |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency | 185, no section below 180 |
| MET (four-skill, digital) | 64, each section at least 59 |
| ECPE | Certificate with every section at C or better |
Michigan does not accept the Duolingo English Test. It also does not superscore English tests or use TOEFL MyBest scores, so you report every sitting. You may be exempt if you have an SAT reading and writing score of 650 or more (or ACT reading and English of 27 or more) and you recently completed at least four years of study in an eligible country such as Canada outside Quebec, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland or several Caribbean nations.
University of Michigan deadlines for fall 2027 entry
| Plan | Application | Decision | Commitment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early Decision (binding) | 1 November 2026 | By 24 December 2026 | 6 January 2027 |
| Early Action (non-binding) | 1 November 2026 | By late January 2027 | 1 May 2027 |
| Regular Decision (non-binding) | 1 February 2027 | By early April 2027 | 1 May 2027 |
| Music, Theatre and Dance (Regular Decision only) | 1 December 2026 | With Regular Decision | 1 May 2027 |
Michigan’s pages give the days without years; its aid page refers to the FAFSA opening on 1 October 2026, which places these deadlines in the current 2026-27 cycle. Early Decision is new for Michigan, and the page does not say whether international students may use it. Students who miss ED or EA requirements are moved to Regular Decision.
Early Action and Early Decision close on 1 November 2026
That is days away. Materials submitted online must arrive by the deadline date. If your teacher evaluation or English score will not be ready, apply Regular Decision by 1 February 2027 instead of rushing a weak file.
How to write the University of Michigan supplemental essays
Michigan asks two required essays in 2026-27, both with a 100-word minimum:
- Leaders and citizens (100 to 300 words): how you are prepared to contribute to Michigan’s goal of developing leaders and citizens who will challenge the present, drawing on people, places, experiences or goals that shaped you.
- Your school or college (100 to 550 words): what draws you to the specific Michigan school or college you chose and how its curriculum supports your interests.
The second essay carries the most weight in practice, because it tests whether you have done your research. Name courses, programmes, research groups or faculty in your chosen college and explain why each matters to you. If you apply to LSA, write about LSA, not about Michigan football. For the first essay, use something you have actually done at its real scale: a study group you organised, a family business you helped run, a problem in your community you worked on.
A sample opening for the school essay, for illustration only: “I want to study environmental engineering in Ann Arbor because the floods that close my road in Port Harcourt every July are an engineering problem, and Michigan has a course built around exactly that.” The rest should name the course and connect it to a plan.
Michigan’s application guidance allows AI tools for brainstorming and proofreading, but the essays must be your own words.
What happens after you apply to Michigan
- Check Enrollment Connect: Michigan’s applicant portal shows missing documents and lets you self-report scores.
- Decision: ED by 24 December 2026; EA by late January 2027 (admit, deny or postpone to Regular Decision); RD by early April 2027 (admit, deny or waitlist).
- Commit: ED by 6 January 2027; EA and RD by 1 May 2027.
- Send official records: official test scores if you self-reported, and final transcripts.
- Prove funding: complete the Financial Resources Statement so Michigan can issue your I-20, then apply for your F-1 visa.
Common mistakes international applicants make with Michigan
- Sending a Duolingo score: Michigan does not accept it.
- Missing IELTS band minimums: a 7.0 overall with one band at 6.0 does not qualify.
- Writing a general “why Michigan” essay: the prompt asks about your specific school or college.
- Counting on scholarships: Michigan describes its international funding as very limited.
- Applying ED without checking eligibility and money: ED is binding and Michigan’s page is silent on international ED applicants.
- Forgetting the higher upper-division tuition: years three and four cost about $4,700 more each in LSA.
Costs to plan for at Michigan
With little aid available, plan for the full budget: tuition, housing and food, books and personal costs, plus flights, the visa and SEVIS fees, winter clothing for Michigan winters, health insurance and summer living costs. Tuition also rises every year and jumps when you reach upper-division standing.
Majors, campus and city
Michigan’s main campus is in Ann Arbor, a college town west of Detroit. Undergraduates enter one of its schools and colleges, including LSA, the College of Engineering, the Ross School of Business, the School of Information, the School of Nursing, the School of Music, Theatre and Dance, the Stamps School of Art and Design and Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Michigan says its students come from more than 120 countries.
Graduate admissions at Michigan
Most graduate degrees run through the Rackham Graduate School and individual departments, while professional schools such as Ross, Law and Medicine admit on their own. Each programme sets its own deadline and English rules. Graduate students are more likely to receive funding through fellowships and assistantships than undergraduates, depending on the programme.

| Michigan State University | See our MSU guide | 1 Nov 2026 (EA and scholarship priority) | See our MSU guide | Automatic Non-resident Scholarship of $3,000 to $18,000 a year | Michigan State scholarships |
If you want to stay in the state but need at least some money, Michigan State’s automatic award for international first-years is far more predictable than Michigan’s limited funds.
Who should apply to the University of Michigan
Apply if you have excellent grades in a demanding curriculum, a clear reason to choose one of Michigan’s schools, an English score that meets the section minimums, and a family or sponsor who can pay around $90,000 a year. Michigan suits students who want a large research university with strong engineering, business and science programmes.
If you need financial aid to attend, Michigan should not be your main target. Look at need-blind and full-need colleges in our list of the best American scholarships for international students.
