Texas Tech University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadline

Texas Tech University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadline
Texas Tech admitted 36% of international first-year applicants for fall 2025. Here are the English scores (Nigerian and Ghanaian passports exempt), the $42,581 2026-27 budget, Presidential Merit awards with resident tuition, and fall 2027 deadlines.

Texas Tech University admission requirements for international students are a transcript, a $75 fee, and proof of English such as TOEFL 79, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 100 or PTE 60. SAT, ACT, essays and recommendation letters are optional. Holders of passports from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and other countries on Texas Tech’s list do not need an English test at all. Texas Tech admitted 69% of all first-year applicants for fall 2025, but only 36% of international applicants.

Texas Tech does not offer full scholarships to international undergraduates. Its main tool is the Presidential Merit Scholarship, roughly $1,000 to $9,000 a year, and any non-resident who wins one also pays the Texas resident tuition rate. That waiver cuts the 2026-27 international budget from $42,581 to $30,321. For fall 2027, apply by the priority scholarship deadline of 1 December 2026; the priority application deadline is 1 May 2027. All of this was checked on Texas Tech’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

Texas Tech ranking

Texas Tech was No. 198 in National Universities and No. 109 among public schools in the U.S. News 2026 edition, published in September 2025, a climb of 16 places from 2024. In the same U.S. News cycle its undergraduate engineering programmes tied at No. 96. We could not load the U.S. News profile to confirm the 2027 edition released in September 2026, so check the latest figure there if the rank matters to your sponsor.

Texas Tech acceptance rate and class profile

Texas Tech’s Common Data Set for 2025-26 gives an unusual detail: it splits out international applicants. That is how we know they face a much tougher rate than the overall figure suggests.

Fall 2025 first-years (CDS 2025-26)All applicantsInternational applicants
Applied38,5661,582
Admitted26,634574
Acceptance rate69.1%36.3%
Enrolled7,579126

The CDS does not say why the international rate is lower. Incomplete files and missing English proof are common reasons in any international pool, so a complete, early application matters as much as your grades. Admitted students who sent scores had SAT 1110 to 1260 (middle 50%) or ACT 23 to 28. Only 35% sent an SAT and 11% an ACT. Texas Tech rates school rigour, class rank, GPA and test scores as very important. In fall 2025 the university had 42,209 students, 34,021 of them undergraduates.

Assured admission

Class rankScore needed for assured admission
Top 10%No minimum score
First quarter (outside top 10%)ACT 24 or SAT 1180
Second quarterACT 26 or SAT 1240
Third quarterACT 27 or SAT 1280
Fourth quarterApplication review

Everyone else is reviewed holistically, which means academics first, then activities, leadership, service, family background and talents. The Rawls College of Business, the Whitacre College of Engineering and some honors and science programmes are stricter; Texas Tech’s page says they take students who meet assured admission, with a holistic route for test-optional applicants. If you want business or engineering, ask admissions how this applies to a school system without class ranks before deciding to skip the SAT.

Texas Tech tuition for international students in 2026-27

Tuition and fees$24,451$12,191
Housing$7,500$7,500

Health insurance$2,930$2,930
Miscellaneous$2,000$2,000
Total$42,581$30,321

The international budget has no line for travel, so add your flights yourself. Housing in Lubbock is cheaper than in Dallas or Houston, which is why Texas Tech’s total sits below several other Texas publics.

Texas Tech scholarships for international students

There is no need-based aid for international undergraduates, so no CSS Profile or ISFAA. Texas Tech does not use a separate scholarship form for its main merit awards; it reviews your admission application. The awards open to international first-years are:

AwardAmountKey rule
Presidential Merit ScholarshipAbout $1,000 to $9,000 a year (test-optional: $1,000 to $4,000, plus $1,000 if top 10%)Based on SAT or ACT and unweighted GPA; non-residents also get resident tuition
First Year Student Presidential ScholarshipNot publishedStrong test scores and class rank; brings resident tuition
International Affairs Undergraduate ScholarshipUp to $1,000Born outside the US, financial need, two recommendation letters; apply by 23 March 2027
IB Honors Scholarship$1,000 (first year)IB Diploma and Honors College contract
TAMS waiverReduces non-resident tuitionMexican citizens only

The International Affairs date is based on this year’s 23 March 2026 deadline; confirm on the official page when the call opens. Texas Tech says merit awards are guaranteed to freshmen admitted by 1 April for fall entry (its international scholarship page gives 15 April), and later admits are considered while funds last. Presidential Merit awards are paid half in fall and half in spring and renew with 30 Texas Tech hours a year and a GPA of 3.0, 3.25 or 3.5 depending on the award size.

One point that catches students out: on the application you choose whether to be test-optional, and once Texas Tech has made its decision that choice cannot be changed. Because test-optional applicants are capped at $4,000 (or $5,000 in the top 10%), a strong SAT can double your award.

Texas Tech admission requirements for international students: what to send

  1. Application: the Common App, ApplyTexas or the Texas Tech International Application. Texas Tech has no preference; submit only one per cycle.
  2. Fee: $75, paid through RaiderConnect.
  3. Transcripts: upload unofficial copies in RaiderConnect for review; official transcripts are due before your first semester. Translations must come from an active member of the American Translators Association. Notarized copies are not enough.
  4. English proof: see below.
  5. Optional items: SAT or ACT, essays, up to three recommendation letters and a resume. If you do not meet assured admission, Texas Tech strongly encourages the essays.

TOEFL iBT (before 21 January 2026)79

Texas Tech exempts applicants who hold a passport from countries on its list, which includes Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, the Philippines and the United Kingdom. The page does not mention WAEC results as a separate route, so the passport is what counts.

Texas Tech deadlines for fall 2027

Texas Tech awards scholarships from the admission application itself. Applying after 1 December still works, but awards are then given in order of arrival while money lasts.

How to write the Texas Tech essays

Texas Tech’s essays are optional, but they matter if your class rank or scores leave you outside assured admission, and that is the situation for most students from systems without ranks. Use them to give the reviewer what your transcript cannot.

  • Explain your record: your grading scale, your position in class if your school will confirm it, and the subjects that relate to your major.
  • Show responsibility: work, family duties and community service count in holistic review.
  • Be specific about Lubbock: name a programme, lab or field such as agriculture, petroleum engineering or wind energy, and say why it fits you.

A sample opening, for illustration only: “Every dry season, my uncle’s maize yield in Kaduna fell by about a third, and I spent two holidays testing whether drip lines made from old hoses could change that.” It leads naturally into an agriculture or engineering application.

What happens after you apply

  1. Decision: from mid-September for early files; then two to four weeks per file.
  2. Scholarship email: merit offers arrive by email with no extra application.
  3. I-20 documents: admitted students receive instructions on the financial evidence needed for the I-20.
  4. Official transcripts: mailed to Box 45005, Lubbock, TX 79409, or sent electronically through the Texas Tech counselor portal, before classes start.
  5. Health: submit immunization records and keep the required health insurance.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Ticking test-optional by default: the choice is permanent once you are admitted and limits your award.
  • Using any translator: Texas Tech wants an active ATA member.
  • Sitting IELTS when your passport exempts you: check the list first.
  • Applying for business or engineering without scores: these colleges lean on assured admission.
  • Submitting two applications: one platform per cycle only.

Costs scholarships do not cover

  • Health insurance: $2,930 in the 2026-27 budget.
  • Flights: not included in the official budget.
  • Visa costs: SEVIS fee and visa application fee.
  • A car or rides: Lubbock is spread out.
  • Summer: awards are split between fall and spring.

Majors, campus and city

Texas Tech is a large research university with colleges of engineering, business, agriculture, architecture, media and communication, human sciences, and arts and sciences, plus a law school and a separate health sciences centre on the same city campus. Lubbock is a mid-sized city in West Texas, far from Dallas and Austin, with a lower cost of living and a campus life built around Red Raider sport. Students who want quiet study and low rent like it; students who want a big city often do not.

Graduate admissions at Texas Tech

Master’s and doctoral applicants apply through the Texas Tech Graduate School to a specific programme, which sets its own deadlines and requirements. The Graduate School publishes separate cost estimates, and funding usually comes from assistantships and fellowships rather than the undergraduate merit grid. Who should apply to Texas Tech

Texas Tech suits a student with good grades who can sit the SAT and score around 1200 or higher, wants engineering, agriculture, business or architecture, and prefers lower living costs to big-city life. Any merit award brings the resident rate, so even $1,000 changes your budget by about $12,000. I would apply by 1 December with scores in hand.

It is a weak fit if you need full funding or if you cannot provide a strong academic record with English proof, given the 36% international admit rate. For fully funded routes, see our guides to Yale University scholarships and Amherst College financial aid.
