Texas A&M University admission requirements for international students are: a Common App or ApplyTexas application, a $90 fee, the required Essay A and five short answers, a self-reported academic record (STARS), and proof of English unless you come from an exempt country. Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia and The Gambia are on Texas A&M’s exempt list, so many West African applicants do not need TOEFL or IELTS at all. The SAT and ACT are optional for autumn 2027 entry, and the deadline is 1 December 2026.
Texas A&M admitted 51.7% of first-year applicants for fall 2025, and 48.5% of international applicants. It is also one of the cheaper big US research universities for international students: the university’s own nine-month estimate for an international undergraduate is $56,711 for 2026, and a merit scholarship of at least $4,000 a year can cut your tuition to the Texas resident rate. This guide covers each part, with figures checked on Texas A&M’s pages and its 2025-26 Common Data Set on 29 October 2026.
Texas A&M ranking
In the U.S. News Best Colleges 2026 edition (released September 2025), Texas A&M was No. 21 among public universities and No. 13 among public universities for best value, according to Texas A&M Today. Its undergraduate engineering programme was No. 10 among public universities that award doctorates, and petroleum engineering was No. 1 in the country. Mays Business School was No. 14 among public universities for undergraduate business.
| Ranking (edition) | Texas A&M’s position |
|---|---|
| U.S. News Top Public Schools (2026 edition) | No. 21 |
| U.S. News Best Value, public (2026 edition) | No. 13 |
| U.S. News undergraduate engineering, public doctoral (2026 edition) | No. 10 |
| U.S. News petroleum engineering (2026 edition) | No. 1 |
| U.S. News undergraduate business, public (2026 edition) | No. 14 |
| Wall Street Journal (2026) | No. 1 public university in Texas |
I could not confirm Texas A&M’s overall place in the U.S. News National Universities list for the 2027 edition, released in September 2026, because the U.S. News page does not load for us and Texas A&M had not posted the figure. Check usnews.com if you need it.
Texas A&M acceptance rate and class profile
Texas A&M’s Common Data Set for 2025-26 covers students who started in fall 2025. Unusually, it splits applicants by residency, so you can see the international rate directly.
| Fall 2025 first-years | Applicants | Admitted | Admit rate | Enrolled |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Texas residents | 49,156 | 26,620 | 54.2% | 11,694 |
| Out-of-state US | 10,882 | 4,489 | 41.3% | 632 |
| International | 2,929 | 1,422 | 48.5% | 158 |
| Total | 62,967 | 32,531 | 51.7% | 12,484 |
Two things stand out. International applicants were admitted at a higher rate than out-of-state Americans, but only about one in nine admitted international students enrolled, which may reflect how hard it is to fund the cost. The middle 50% of enrolled students scored 1160 to 1390 on the SAT and 24 to 32 on the ACT, and about 77% of enrolled students submitted an SAT even though tests were optional.
Texas A&M tuition for international students
International undergraduates pay the nonresident rate. Texas A&M’s International Student and Scholar Services publishes this nine-month estimate for 2026, which is the figure used for your I-20:
| Cost item (international undergraduate, 9 months, 2026) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $37,168 |
| Fees | $4,270 |
| Health insurance | $3,023 |
| Living expenses | $12,250 |
| Total | $56,711 |
The 2025-26 Common Data Set lists slightly different 2026-27 figures for a full-time first-year: $36,877 nonresident tuition, $3,970 required fees and $12,944 for room and board. Both sets of numbers land in the same range. Some programmes cost more, and the ISSS estimate notes that actual costs vary with your courses and programme fees.
Texas A&M scholarships for international students
Texas A&M’s admissions office says it offers aid and scholarships exclusive to international students, and its Common Data Set shows the money is real: in 2025-26, 237 nonresident (international) undergraduates received institutional aid averaging $34,321, a total of $8,134,009. With about 571 degree-seeking international undergraduates that year, that is roughly two in five. Texas A&M does not publish fixed award amounts for international freshmen, so treat the average as a rough guide only.
How you are considered
- Apply for fall by 1 December: only fall admits are reviewed for incoming freshman scholarships.
- Give consent on the application: the Common App and ApplyTexas ask whether your data can be used for scholarships. If you decline, you are not considered.
- Write Essay A well: the same required essay is read for scholarships.
- Submit the TASFA: from 2026-27, the Texas Application for State Financial Aid replaces the old International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA). Texas A&M recommends filing it by 1 May each year, and before any scholarship application that asks for it.
The $4,000 rule that cuts tuition
Texas law lets a nonresident student who wins competitive university scholarships pay the Texas resident tuition rate. At Texas A&M, an undergraduate needs competitive scholarships totalling at least $4,000 for the academic year, with each scholarship counted being at least $1,000, awarded by a Texas A&M college, department or authorised committee after competing with Texas residents. The 2026-27 resident tuition in the Common Data Set is $8,886, against $36,877 for nonresidents, so this waiver can be worth far more than the scholarship itself.
The waiver page says students must be lawfully present in the US and does not mention international students by name, so confirm with Aggie One Stop that your scholarship qualifies. Awards from outside bodies, such as clubs or booster groups, do not count. International students can also receive International Texas Public Education Grants (ITPEG), which are need-based.
Texas A&M admission requirements for international students: the application
You count as an international freshman if you are not a US citizen or permanent resident and have no college credit, or only earned college credit before finishing secondary school.
- Application: Common App or ApplyTexas. The choice does not affect your decision, but submit only one. Your name must match your passport.
- Fee: $90, non-refundable. Texas A&M says fee waivers are not available for international applicants.
- Essay A (required, up to 750 words): “Tell us your story,” about opportunities or challenges in secondary school that shaped who you are.
- Required short answers: one of up to 250 words on a life event that prepared you for college, and four of up to 100 words each on your life goals, why you chose your major, why Texas A&M, and your plans beyond a bachelor’s degree.
- Optional short answer: up to 250 words on anything that shaped your abilities or record and is not covered elsewhere.
- STARS self-reported record: required. It takes two to six hours, cannot be submitted before the application, and must be linked by 15 December.
- Transcripts: if you have already graduated from a school outside the US, send an official transcript signed or sealed by the school, with a certified English translation if needed. Current students use their transcripts only to fill in STARS.
- Letters and resume: letters are optional; Texas A&M considers the first two it receives. A resume is optional and only for activities that do not fit the form. ApplyTexas users also get an Extracurricular Activities Form by email.
Testing policy
Texas A&M is test-optional for fall 2027. If you send scores, the university uses your highest single-date total, and sending none is neither an advantage nor a disadvantage. It plans to require the SAT or ACT from spring and fall 2028 applicants, but that change still needs Board of Regents approval, with final rules expected by the end of June 2027.
English requirements
Citizens of these countries are exempt: American Samoa, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, Canada (except Quebec), the Cayman Islands, Dominica, Micronesia, The Gambia, Ghana, Gibraltar, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Liberia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, the Turks and Caicos Islands and the United Kingdom. Four full years of secondary school in the US also exempts you. Everyone else needs one of these:
| Test | Minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT taken before 21 January 2026 | 80 |
| TOEFL iBT taken on or after 21 January 2026 | 4.5 overall, at least 4.0 in each section |
| TOEFL Essentials | 8.5 |
| IELTS Academic | 6.0 (IELTS General not accepted) |
| SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing | 560 |
| ACT English | 21 |
Scores must be less than two years old, and TOEFL MyBest is not accepted. The international freshman page does not list the Duolingo English Test, so do not rely on it without written confirmation from admissions.
Texas A&M deadlines for fall 2027
| Step | Date |
|---|---|
| Applications open | 1 August 2026 |
| Application deadline (College Station) | 1 December 2026 |
| STARS link and other required documents | 15 December 2026 |
| Decision appeal deadline (if denied) | 1 April 2027 |
| TASFA recommended date | 1 May 2027 |
| Accept and confirm your offer | 1 May 2027 |
If a deadline falls on a weekend, applications stay open until 11:59 p.m. Central time on the following Monday, and documents until 5 p.m. that Monday. Texas A&M has no Early Decision round for fall 2027 on its freshman page. The page does not give a year beside its dates, but its testing notice refers to 2027 applicants, so these dates apply to this cycle. Texas A&M at Galveston has a later deadline of 1 May 2027 if you are interested in marine and maritime programmes.
STARS is due 15 December
Submitting the application by 1 December is only half the job. Your STARS record must be linked by 15 December 2026, and an application without it is incomplete, which also takes you out of scholarship review.
How to write Essay A and the short answers, with a sample opening
Texas A&M asks for more writing than most public universities: about 1,400 required words in all. The short answers are where many international applicants lose marks, because they write general praise of the university. Some practical rules:
- Essay A is your main story: pick one opportunity or challenge from secondary school and show how it changed what you do now. Concrete scenes beat summaries.
- Do not repeat yourself: the 250-word “life event” answer should use a different event from Essay A.
- “Why Texas A&M” in 100 words: name one programme, research area or student organisation and connect it to your plans. If you have a real link to community service, say so here.
- “Why this major”: show a moment that started the interest and something you have done about it since.
- Remember the scholarship reader: Essay A is also read for scholarships, so leadership and responsibility should be visible alongside your grades.
A sample opening for Essay A, for illustration only: “Every Saturday of my final two years, I opened my aunt’s provision shop at six, and by the time the first customer arrived I had already balanced the previous day’s sales in a school exercise book.” The essay would go on to show how that habit grew into a simple spreadsheet system, what it taught you about running something, and why it points you towards industrial engineering or business at Texas A&M.
What happens after you apply
- Acknowledgement email: usually within three to five business days, with your UIN and access to the Applicant Information System (AIS). ApplyTexas users pay the fee there.
- Link STARS and upload documents: through AIS by 15 December 2026.
- Decision: released in AIS. Texas A&M’s page does not publish a fixed decision date for fall applicants. If you are denied, you can appeal by 1 April 2027.
- Scholarship and aid offers: file the TASFA by 1 May 2027 and watch your email for scholarship notices.
- Confirm by 1 May 2027: then submit proof of funds to ISSS for your I-20 and apply for an F-1 visa.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Booking IELTS when you are exempt: if you are a citizen of Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, The Gambia or another listed country, you do not need an English test.
- Using Duolingo: it is not on the international freshman list of accepted tests.
- Missing the STARS link: STARS cannot be submitted before the application and must be linked by 15 December.
- Declining scholarship consent: one checkbox removes you from all freshman scholarship review.
- Filing the old ISFAA: for 2026-27 onward, the TASFA replaces it.
- Submitting two applications: pick the Common App or ApplyTexas, not both.
Costs scholarships will not cover
- Health insurance: $3,023 in the 2026 estimate, and $6,000 for each dependant.
- Summer: the estimate covers nine months; housing over the summer is extra if you stay.
- Programme fees: some majors add differential tuition or fees above the base estimate.
- Visa and travel: the SEVIS fee, visa fee and flights to Texas.
- Transport: trips home at holidays and travel beyond College Station are your own cost.
Majors, campus and city
Texas A&M enrolled 81,354 students across all campuses in fall 2025, with 74,407 at College Station and 62,543 undergraduates overall. It offers more than 140 undergraduate degree programmes in 17 colleges and schools, on a 5,200-acre main campus. Research spending was nearly $1.4 billion in fiscal 2024. The university hosts more than 6,000 international students, and there are branch campuses in Galveston, Texas, and Doha, Qatar.
Engineering is the best-known strength. Most engineering freshmen start in General Engineering and then apply to a specific major through Entry to a Major (ETAM) between their second and fourth semesters. Students with a Texas A&M GPA of 3.75 or higher, a full-time load and the required C grades get automatic entry to their first-choice major. Agriculture, veterinary science, business and the sciences are also strong. College Station is a university town, and Texas A&M’s living-cost estimate of $12,250 for nine months is lower than the Seattle and Minneapolis figures in our other guides.
Texas A&M graduate admissions for international students
- Application: most programmes use Texas A&M GraduateCAS. Deadlines are set by each department.
- Fee: $90 plus a service fee; the international fee waiver is not available.
- English: TOEFL iBT 80 (or 4.5 with 4.0 per section after 21 January 2026), IELTS 6.0, or GRE Verbal 146 with department approval. Citizens of exempt countries, including Nigeria and Ghana, need no test.
- Cost: the 2026 nine-month estimate for most graduate programmes is $35,796, and a $1,000 competitive scholarship can qualify a graduate student for resident tuition.
Texas A&M compared with other big public universities
| University | Acceptance rate (fall 2025) | Aid for international first-years | English exemption for Nigeria and Ghana | Deadline (fall 2027) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Texas A&M | 51.7% (48.5% international) | Scholarships; $4,000 in awards brings resident tuition | Yes | 1 Dec 2026 |
| University of Minnesota Twin Cities | 78.9% (76.4% international) | Global Excellence Scholarship, $5,000 to $20,000 a year | Yes | 1 Nov 2026, 1 Dec 2026 or 1 Jan 2027 |
| Virginia Tech | About 55% | College and departmental scholarships only | Yes, with four years of English-medium schooling | 15 Nov 2026 (EA) or 15 Jan 2027 |
| University of Washington | 41.7% | None | No | 15 Nov 2026 |
If you want to stay in Texas but in a big city, read our guide to University of Houston scholarships. For a Midwest public university with a published merit award for international students, see our Iowa State University International Merit Scholarship guide.
Who should apply to Texas A&M
Apply if you want engineering, agriculture, business or the sciences at a large research university, your grades are strong, and your family can cover most of about $57,000 a year with some help from merit awards. Texas A&M is especially attractive for students from Nigeria, Ghana and other exempt countries, because you save the cost of an English test, and its admit rate for international students is close to half.
It is a weaker fit if you need a full scholarship, since Texas A&M does not promise to meet full need for international students, or if you want a big-city campus. I would apply by 1 December with a carefully written Essay A, because that one essay decides both admission and scholarship review.
