University of North Texas admission requirements for international students are straightforward: apply through ApplyTexas or the Common App, pay an $85 fee, send official transcripts and prove your English with TOEFL 79, IELTS 6.5 or a B in English in WASSCE, NECO or KCSE. SAT and ACT scores are optional. UNT admitted 71% of first-year applicants in the latest federal data, and international freshmen for fall 2027 have until 15 July 2027 to apply.
The money question has a clear answer too. UNT has no full scholarships, but international students are eligible for the UNT Excellence Scholarship, worth $2,000 to $12,000 a year, and winners can also get a waiver that brings tuition down to the Texas resident rate. That combination cuts UNT’s estimated international budget from $44,892 to about $35,172 a year before the award itself. To be considered, you must be admitted by 1 March 2027. This guide was checked against UNT’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
UNT ranking and reputation
UNT is one of the US universities in the top Carnegie research tier, and it describes itself as one of the nation’s 115 top-tier research universities. On U.S. News, UNT’s own rankings page highlights a No. 34 national rank for social mobility (second in Texas), No. 25 for online bachelor’s programmes and No. 27 in the world for education and educational research. UNT’s page does not state its overall National Universities position, and we could not load the U.S. News profile to confirm the current number, so we have left it out.
UNT is best known for its College of Music, along with programmes in business, engineering, computer science, merchandising and hospitality, journalism, and education.
UNT acceptance rate and class profile
UNT publishes a Common Data Set, but its files could not be opened when we checked. The figures below are the federal numbers for the 2024-25 year as reported by CollegeData.
| Fall 2024 first-years | Figure |
|---|---|
| Applicants | 41,250 |
| Admitted | 29,242 |
| Acceptance rate | 71% |
| Enrolled | 8,893 |
| SAT middle 50% | Math 460 to 600; Reading and Writing 490 to 620 |
| ACT middle 50% | 19 to 26 |
| International acceptance rate | Not published |
UNT guarantees admission if you meet any one of these: top 30% of your graduating class, an unweighted GPA of 3.25 or higher, a 3.0 unweighted GPA in at least 12 hours of dual credit, or a 3.0 unweighted GPA in core subjects (four years each of English, maths and science, and three of social science). Applicants who miss all of these go to individual review, where your school, courses, work, leadership and activities count.
UNT tuition for international students in 2026-27
UNT’s International Affairs office publishes the amount you must show for your I-20. For 2026-27 (nine months, 12 credits per semester), it gives two budgets, one at the full non-resident rate and one with the out-of-state tuition waiver that comes with a competitive scholarship.
| Cost item (2026-27) | Without waiver | With waiver |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition and fees | $21,695 | $11,975 |
| Living expenses (housing and meals) | $18,955 | $18,955 |
| Books and insurance | $4,242 | $4,242 |
| Total | $44,892 | $35,172 |
Some colleges charge more. Without the waiver, tuition and fees are $22,085 in engineering, $22,055 in business and $22,775 in music; with it, they are $12,365, $12,335 and $13,055. If you bring a spouse or child, add $5,500 for each for nine months, or $6,875 for twelve.
UNT scholarships for international students
UNT says international students are eligible for the UNT Excellence Scholarship and the Transfer Excellence Scholarship. There is no need-based aid for international students, no CSS Profile and no ISFAA. You do not file a separate form for the Excellence award; UNT makes the offer from your admission record, based on class rank and unweighted GPA. Where your school does not rank students, UNT uses your GPA and a review of your record.
| Class rank | GPA 3.75 to 4.00 | GPA 3.50 to 3.74 | GPA 3.25 to 3.49 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top 1% | $12,000 | $10,000 | $8,000 |
| Top 5% | $10,000 | $8,000 | $6,000 |
| Top 10% | $8,000 | $6,000 | $5,000 |
| Top 15% | $6,000 | $5,000 | $4,000 |
| Top 20% | $5,000 | $4,000 | $3,000 |
| Top 25% | $4,000 | $3,000 | $2,000 |
- Test bonus: an extra $1,000 a year with SAT 1350 or ACT 30, if scores arrive by 1 July.
- Waiver: international recipients may also qualify for the Texas competitive scholarship waiver, which removes the gap between in-state and out-of-state tuition. It does not cover the Out-of-State Teaching Fee.
- Payment: half in fall, half in spring.
- Renewal: up to four years, with at least 12 UNT hours each semester, 24 hours a year and a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
The table shows amounts for fall 2026 first-years. The fall 2027 grid had not been posted when we checked.
UNT admission requirements for international students: application parts
- Application: ApplyTexas or the Common App. Use one only.
- Fee: $85 for international undergraduates, in US dollars, by card, money order or check. Fee waivers are uploaded in the myUNT portal. The payment item appears in myUNT three to five days after you submit.
- Transcripts: official records, diplomas and certificates from every secondary school and college, in the original language and in English. Translations must come from the school or a certified translator. UNT does not accept notarized or photocopied transcripts and prefers electronic delivery.
- English proof: see the table below.
- SAT or ACT: optional, but scores can help with admission review and the scholarship bonus.
- Music audition: required for the College of Music, which will not review your file until you meet English proficiency.
English requirements
| Proof of English | UNT minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 79 |
| IELTS | 6.5 overall |
| SAT Reading and Writing (tests after March 2016) | 560 |
| WASSCE, NECO or KCSE | B or higher in English Language |
| GCE, GCSE or IGCSE English Language | C or higher |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency | Grade B / Grade C |
| IB English A1 Higher Level | 5 or higher |
Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya are not on UNT’s list of exempt English-speaking countries, but a B in English in WASSCE, NECO or KCSE counts as proof, so many West African and Kenyan students need no separate test. UNT’s English page does not mention Duolingo or PTE, so ask admissions before booking either. If you fall short, UNT can admit you conditionally and place you in its Intensive English Language Institute first.
UNT deadlines for fall 2027
| Date | What it is for |
|---|---|
| 15 November 2026 | Spring 2027 application deadline (international freshmen) |
| 1 March 2027 | Admitted, with all transcripts in, to be considered for the UNT Excellence Scholarship |
| 15 April 2027 | Summer 2027 application deadline |
| 1 May 2027 | Accept your scholarship offer |
| 1 July 2027 | SAT or ACT scores in for the $1,000 test bonus |
| 15 July 2027 | Fall 2027 application deadline (international freshmen) |
The scholarship dates are based on this year’s dates; confirm on the official page when the call opens. UNT has no Early Decision or Early Action. Decisions are rolling, and UNT cannot issue an I-20 until you are fully admitted.
The real deadline is 1 March
15 July 2027 gets you admitted, but only students admitted with complete transcripts by 1 March 2027 are guaranteed scholarship review. Without the award and its waiver, your yearly budget is close to $45,000.
How to write your UNT essay or statement
UNT does not set supplemental essays for most first-year applicants. If you apply through the Common App you will usually write its main personal essay, and if your file goes to individual review, that essay and your activity list carry more weight. Keep it about one experience that shows how you work.
- Give context: one line explaining your grading scale or school system.
- Link to your major: UNT admits you to the university, not always your major, so show you understand what the programme needs.
- Musicians and artists: let the audition or portfolio do the talking; use the essay for your story behind it.
A sample opening, for illustration only: “Our church choir in Enugu had 40 voices and one keyboard, so at fifteen I started writing parts that a single player could cover.” It leads straight into a music application and tells the reader something no transcript shows.
What happens after you apply
- Track your checklist: myUNT shows missing items, your fee and your scholarship offers.
- Admission decision: rolling. If you are admitted early, you are in the scholarship pool by 1 March.
- Scholarship offer: accept by 1 May.
- I-20 request: through the iNorthTX portal, with bank proof matching the 2026-27 (or 2027-28) budget.
- Visa and arrival: pay the SEVIS fee, book your F-1 interview, then complete orientation and housing steps.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Treating 15 July as the target: scholarship review needs you admitted by 1 March.
- Sending notarized copies: UNT rejects them. Ask your school to send records electronically or in a sealed envelope.
- Booking IELTS you do not need: a B in WASSCE, NECO or KCSE English already counts.
- Forgetting the higher music and engineering costs: budget with your college’s figure.
- Dropping below 12 hours: it can cost you the scholarship and the waiver.
Costs scholarships do not cover
- Out-of-State Teaching Fee: the waiver does not remove it.
- Housing and meals: $18,955 in the 2026-27 budget, the largest single cost after tuition.
- Visa and travel: SEVIS fee, visa fee and flights.
- Dependants: $5,500 each for the academic year.
- Summer terms: the Excellence award is split between fall and spring only.
Campus and city
UNT’s main campus is in Denton, a college town north of Dallas, and it also teaches at a Frisco campus and online. Denton is cheaper and calmer than Dallas while the Dallas-Fort Worth job market is within driving distance for internships. Admission to UNT does not always mean admission to your major, so check your department’s own rules, especially in music, business and engineering.
Graduate admissions at UNT
Graduate applicants apply through UNT’s graduate admissions process to a specific programme, and each department sets its own deadlines, test policy and English score above the university minimum. Funding comes mainly from assistantships and departmental awards. Compare options in our list of the best American scholarships for international students.

Who should apply to UNT
UNT makes sense if you have a GPA of 3.25 or above, can apply well before 1 March, and want music, business, computing, education or hospitality at a mid-range price. A strong student in the top 10% of a class with a 3.75 GPA could get $8,000 a year plus the waiver, which brings the yearly budget down to roughly $27,000. I would also apply if your English results come from WASSCE or NECO, since UNT accepts them directly.
UNT is not the right target if your family needs a full scholarship, or if your GPA is under 3.25 and your school does not rank students, because the Excellence grid starts at 3.25. If that is you, look at fully funded options in our Amherst College financial aid guide.
