No, SUMAS does not offer Molecular Biology. The State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, did not list a Molecular Biology degree among the 26 programmes in its 2026/2027 Post-UTME notice, the 15 programmes the NUC accredited in 2025, or the October 2026 supplementary admission list. So there is no SUMAS cut off mark for Molecular Biology. The general SUMAS cut off for every programme in 2026/2027 is 150 in the UTME, the same as in 2025/2026.
2027/2028 update: SUMAS cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
If you want to study molecular biology at SUMAS, the closest degrees are Genetics and Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Applied Microbiology and Brewing. All three hold full NUC accreditation, and all three were on the October 2026 supplementary list. This guide explains why some websites list a “SUMAS Molecular Biology department”, compares the three alternatives, gives their requirements, and shows how to get in.
Does SUMAS have a Department of Molecular Biology?
Not according to anything SUMAS has published. I checked these sources on 29 October 2026:
| Source | Molecular Biology listed? |
|---|---|
| SUMAS 2026/2027 Post-UTME and Direct Entry programme list (26 programmes) | No |
| SUMAS notice on the 15 NUC accredited programmes (2025 exercise) | No |
| SUMAS supplementary admission list, October 2026 (as reported) | No |
| 2026/2027 SUMAS admission batch summaries | No |
Some pages online use course titles that SUMAS has never published, sometimes copied from other universities. If you see “SUMAS Molecular Biology cut off” on a website, there is no SUMAS source behind it. A small chance remains that SUMAS adds new programmes: newer health courses such as Optometry and Dental Therapy appeared in the 2026/2027 batches. Even so, no Molecular Biology programme has been announced. Call the SUMAS admission office on 08067390088 before you choose any course that is not on the official list.
Choose a course SUMAS runs
A course SUMAS does not offer cannot lead to a SUMAS admission, and fixing it later means paying for a JAMB change of course. Pick Genetics and Biotechnology, Biochemistry or Applied Microbiology and Brewing instead.
SUMAS cut off mark 2027/2028 for the closest courses
SUMAS has published one cut off for all programmes, and no departmental cut offs for any year.
| Session | General SUMAS cut off | Departmental cut off | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | Not published | SUMAS Post-UTME and Direct Entry notice |
| 2026/2027 supplementary | 150 | Not published | Supplementary notice as reported, 17 October 2026 |
| 2025/2026 (previous year) | 150 | Not published | SUMAS notice as reproduced by Myschool, July 2025 |
A private directory quotes 160 for SUMAS and calls it federal. SUMAS is owned by Enugu State, and 160 is not a SUMAS figure.
The closest alternatives to Molecular Biology at SUMAS
| Point | Genetics and Biotechnology | Biochemistry | Applied Microbiology and Brewing |
|---|---|---|---|
| How close to molecular biology | Closest: DNA, gene expression, genetic engineering | Close: molecules of life, enzymes, metabolism | Partial: microbial genetics and fermentation |
| UTME subjects (JAMB) | English, Biology, Chemistry, any other science | English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics | English, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics |
| NUC accreditation | Full (2025) | Full (2025) | Full (2025) |
| On the October 2026 supplementary list | Yes | Yes | Yes (as “Applied Microbiology”) |
| Fee on the 2022/2023 schedule | ₦251,400 | ₦251,400 | ₦251,400 |
All three sit in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences on the Igbo-Eno campus. My pick for a molecular biology goal is Genetics and Biotechnology: its core courses (molecular genetics, recombinant DNA, bioinformatics) overlap most with a Molecular Biology degree. Choose Biochemistry if you like chemistry more, since molecular biology is a large part of most Biochemistry programmes. Choose Applied Microbiology and Brewing if microbes and industry interest you more than human or plant genes.

Requirements for the three alternatives
The SUMAS rules below apply to all three. The UTME subjects follow JAMB’s brochure entries as reproduced by Myschool. SUMAS is not named in the remarks for any of them, so confirm on the JAMB e-brochure when you register.
| Requirement | What SUMAS asks |
|---|---|
| UTME score | 150 or more in the 2026 UTME |
| Choice | SUMAS as first choice on JAMB CAPS |
| Age | At least 16 by 30 September 2026 |
| O’level (SUMAS rule) | Five credits including English Language, Mathematics and Physics, plus two relevant subjects (Biology and Chemistry for these courses) |
| Sittings | Not more than two |
| O’level upload | On JAMB CAPS; the 2026 SUMAS deadline was 15 August |
| Direct Entry | At least second class lower or its equivalent in OND, HND or a first degree, cleared on JAMB e-Facility |
The one difference is the fourth UTME subject. Biochemistry takes Physics or Mathematics. Applied Microbiology and Brewing takes Mathematics. Genetics and Biotechnology takes any other science, and Physics or Mathematics is the safe choice. If you write English, Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics, you are eligible for all three, which helps if SUMAS offers you a different course from the one you chose.
Our JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus guides cover two of those papers.
How SUMAS screening works
SUMAS called its 2026/2027 Post-UTME a screening exercise, published no written test and has not said how it combines UTME scores and O’level grades. A later notice asked some admitted candidates who skipped Post-UTME to register on SAMP, pay the screening fee and be verified at the ICT Unit, which points to screening on records. SUMAS has not confirmed this.
Worked example (illustration only)
Many Nigerian universities use a 50/50 aggregate: UTME ÷ 8 for up to 50 points, plus five O’level grades scored A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5 for up to 50 points. SUMAS has not published its formula.
Nneka wanted Molecular Biology and scored 201 in the UTME (English, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics). Her grades are B3 in English Language, B3 in Mathematics, B2 in Biology, B2 in Chemistry and C5 in Physics. She applies for Genetics and Biotechnology instead.
| Part | Working | Points |
|---|---|---|
| UTME | 201 ÷ 8 | 25.13 |
| O’level | 8 + 8 + 9 + 9 + 6 | 40 |
| Aggregate | 25.13 + 40 | 65.13 out of 100 |
With English, Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics in JAMB, she can also be considered for Biochemistry or Applied Microbiology and Brewing if SUMAS offers her a change of course.
Admission odds and the score to aim for
None of the three alternatives is as crowded as the health courses at SUMAS. All three were reopened in the October 2026 supplementary round, so places remained after the main screening. SUMAS has not published quotas, catchment states or ELDS states, and the 45/35/20 merit, catchment and ELDS split quoted online is a federal university guideline that SUMAS has not adopted publicly.
My advice, not an official figure: aim for 180 or more for Genetics and Biotechnology or Applied Microbiology and Brewing, and 190 or more for Biochemistry, which draws more candidates who missed health courses. Strong grades in Biology and Chemistry help in every case.
Where can you study Molecular Biology in Nigeria?
JAMB’s brochure has an entry for Molecular Biology. As reproduced by Myschool, it asks for:
| Requirement | JAMB brochure entry for Molecular Biology |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics |
| O’level | Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics |
| Direct Entry | Two A level passes in Chemistry and one of Biology, Zoology or Botany |
That copy of the brochure does not list the universities offering it, and I could not verify any university near Enugu that runs a standalone B.Sc. Molecular Biology. Many Nigerian universities teach molecular biology inside a Biochemistry department instead. For example, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto has a Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, but its undergraduate degree is a B.Sc. Biochemistry.
To find a university that runs it, log in to JAMB e-Facility, open the brochure and search for Molecular Biology, then check that the institution offering it is one you can realistically attend. For most candidates in the South East, the practical route is a B.Sc. in Genetics and Biotechnology or Biochemistry, then an M.Sc. in Molecular Biology.
What a molecular biology path looks like after SUMAS
- Undergraduate: four years (usual Nigerian duration for these B.Sc. programmes; SUMAS has not published its own) in Genetics and Biotechnology or Biochemistry, with SIWES and a final year project. Choose a molecular project if you can.
- Skills to pick up: DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis and basic bioinformatics.
- Postgraduate: an M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology or Molecular Genetics.
- Careers: molecular diagnostics and research laboratories, agricultural biotechnology, pharmaceutical research, and lecturing.
Mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a course SUMAS does not run: it cannot lead to a SUMAS offer.
- Missing the Physics credit: SUMAS asks every applicant for it.
- Leaving out Mathematics in the UTME: it narrows your options among the three alternatives.
- Applying twice on the SUMAS portal: only one application is allowed.
- Paying agents: SUMAS takes payments only through its own portals.
How to get admission into SUMAS for a molecular science course
- Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the line linked to your NIN.
- Choose SUMAS and a real SUMAS course: select State University of Medical and Applied Sciences, Igbo-Eno, first, with Genetics and Biotechnology, Biochemistry or Applied Microbiology and Brewing. To switch schools, see our JAMB change of institution guide; to switch courses, see our JAMB change of course guide.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: at a JAMB accredited CBT centre, with Physics included. The 2026 SUMAS deadline was 15 August.
- Apply for SUMAS screening: at sumas.edu.ng/apply or samp.sumas.edu.ng, pay ₦2,000 with your JAMB number as the narration, and keep the same details as on CAPS. Our SUMAS Post-UTME form 2026/2027 guide covers each step.
- Check admission: watch the SUMAS batch lists, then log in to JAMB e-Facility, Check Admission Status and Access my CAPS. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains the statuses.
- Accept and print: accept on CAPS, print your admission letter, and change your course on JAMB within three days if SUMAS offered you a different one.
- Pay acceptance and clear: generate the ₦50,000 acceptance fee on eportal.sumas.edu.ng and pay on the SUMAS Revenue Portal. Our SUMAS instructions to successful candidates post lists the documents.
SUMAS Molecular Biology: frequently asked questions
Does SUMAS offer Molecular Biology? No. Molecular Biology is not on the SUMAS 2026/2027 programme list, its NUC accreditation list or its supplementary admission list.
Which SUMAS course is closest to Molecular Biology? Genetics and Biotechnology is the closest, followed by Biochemistry. Both have full NUC accreditation and need 150 or more in the UTME to apply.
Can I still get into SUMAS this session if I chose Molecular Biology elsewhere? Possibly, if you scored 150 or more in the 2026 UTME. The October 2026 supplementary round accepted candidates willing to make SUMAS their first choice for courses such as Genetics and Biotechnology and Biochemistry, though no closing date was published.
What JAMB subjects should I write if I want Molecular Biology but may end up at SUMAS? Write Use of English, Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. That combination fits JAMB’s Molecular Biology entry and all three SUMAS alternatives.
