ESUT Cut-Off Mark for Mathematics 2027/2028: Admission Guide, Requirements and Screening

ESUT’s minimum UTME score for Mathematics in 2027/2028 is 160, and no merit score is published. See the JAMB subjects, O’level and Direct Entry rules, screening terms, a worked example and a safe target score.

The ESUT cut off mark for Mathematics for 2026/2027 is 160 in the 2026 UTME. Enugu State University of Science and Technology’s official Post-UTME advert of 4 July 2026 named specific courses at 180, 200, 220 and 240, and Mathematics was not among them, so the general 160 minimum for “other courses” applies. A score of 160 or more, ESUT as your institution and the right subjects made you eligible for screening.

2027/2028 update: ESUT cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Most candidates really want to know what score gets admitted, and ESUT does not publish a final merit score for Mathematics or any other course. This guide sets out the official figure, the cut-off history I could trace, a safe target score marked as advice, the JAMB subject combination and O’level rules, how ESUT’s no-test screening works, a worked example, the CAPS steps, and what B.Sc. Mathematics at ESUT leads to.

Keep the two numbers apart. The minimum UTME score is the gate ESUT announces before screening; below it, the portal will not take your application for that course. The merit score is the lowest score that was actually admitted into the course after screening, and ESUT does not announce it. Most of the confusion online about “ESUT departmental cut-off marks” comes from treating the first as the second.

2025/2026160Minimum UTME to apply (Mathematics not named, so “Others”)Previous year, from a blog summary of ESUT’s notice
Any yearNot publishedFinal merit score for MathematicsNo ESUT list found

Mathematics sat in the general band in both years I could trace. ESUT moved Computer Science to 200 and added Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security at 200 for 2026/2027, all of which draw the same strong-in-Mathematics candidates. That puts some of the best maths students into those courses and can leave Mathematics itself a little less crowded, but ESUT has published nothing to confirm how many applied.

Some blogs quote much higher ESUT “cut-offs” for courses such as Medicine (314) and Nursing (290) without an ESUT document behind them. None of those lists gives an official figure for this course, so ignore any you see.

Safe target score for Mathematics at ESUT (my advice)

This is my advice, not an ESUT rule. Mathematics is rarely anyone’s first dream course, and many of its students were redirected from Computer Science or Engineering through CAPS. Those candidates tend to have higher scores, which is what decides your chances in a course with no published merit list.

Your UTME scoreMy read for ESUT Mathematics
160 to 174Eligible, but your place depends on how many higher scorers end up in Mathematics.
175 to 194A fair to good chance, especially with a strong Mathematics credit.
195 to 214A good chance.
215 and aboveComfortable for Mathematics. You also clear ESUT’s 200 minimum for Computer Science and Data Science.

For a 2027 attempt, my safe target for ESUT Mathematics is 185 or more, with at least a B in O’level Mathematics.

Catchment and state of origin

ESUT has not published a catchment list. It is owned by the Enugu State Government, so Enugu indigenes are its primary catchment, but it admits candidates from every state. The 45/35/20 merit, catchment and ELDS split you may have read about is federal university policy, and ESUT has not said it applies it. Plan to win on your score and grades.

JAMB subject combination and O’level requirements for ESUT Mathematics

RequirementMathematics
UTME subjectsUse of English, Mathematics and any two of Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Geography
O’levelFive credits including English Language, Mathematics, and Physics or Chemistry
SittingsNot stated in ESUT’s advert; most universities allow up to two. Confirm on JAMB’s e-brochure
Direct EntryTwo A’level passes in Mathematics and another science, or NCE merit in Mathematics and one of Physics, Chemistry or Economics (general rule)
ESUT remarkNone on the brochure page, so the general rule applies
Special requirementsNone published by ESUT

These are the general requirements in the JAMB brochure entry for Mathematics as reprinted by Myschool (checked 29 October 2026). The page lists dozens of university-specific remarks; ESUT is not among them, so the general rule is the one that applies until ESUT says otherwise.

The general rule is flexible enough that you could write Mathematics, Economics and Geography. I would not. Taking Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry meets the rule and also keeps ESUT’s Computer Science, Data Science and Statistics within reach if CAPS moves you. For O’level, credits in Mathematics, English, Physics and Chemistry plus one more subject cover you for Mathematics and its neighbours.

If you hold an NCE in Mathematics, the general rule allows Direct Entry with a merit pass. ESUT’s advert only says DE candidates are screened online and cleared on JAMB e-facility by their former institutions, so confirm the NCE grade with the department before you choose ESUT.

How ESUT screening works for Mathematics

These were the 2026/2027 screening terms in ESUT’s advert. The window has closed for this session, but they show you what to prepare for 2027.

ESUT has not published an aggregate formula. The 2026/2027 advert sets a minimum UTME score per course and an online screening with no test, and it says nothing about weights or O’level grade points. So the only arithmetic you can do with official figures is to check how far you are above your course’s minimum. Some blogs quote a Post-UTME percentage for ESUT; that cannot be right for 2026/2027, because there was no Post-UTME test to score.

Worked example for a Mathematics candidate

Take Ifeanyi, who scored 178 in the 2026 UTME with B2 in Mathematics and B3, C4, C4 and C5 in his other four subjects.

  1. Eligibility check (official): 178 minus the 160 minimum = 18 marks above the line.
  2. UTME half (illustrative method): 178 ÷ 8 = 22.25 out of 50.
  3. O’level half (illustrative method): 9 + 8 + 7 + 7 + 6 = 37 out of 50.
  4. Illustrative total: 22.25 + 37 = 59.25 out of 100.

Chiamaka scored 196 but her grades were C4, C5, C5, C6 and C6. Her illustrative total is 24.50 + 29 = 53.50, behind Ifeanyi. If ESUT ranks on UTME alone, she leads by 18 marks. Since ESUT has not said which, a strong O’level sheet and a strong UTME both count.

To see why your O’level grades can still matter, here is a method some other Nigerian universities use: half the aggregate from the UTME (your score divided by 8, out of 50) and half from five O’level subjects (A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5, out of 50). ESUT has not published this or any other formula. I use it only to compare two candidates, never to predict an ESUT cut-off.

How to apply for Mathematics at ESUT, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you need to buy the UTME form.
  2. Register the UTME with the right subjects: pick Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and choose ESUT and Mathematics. ESUT’s 2026 advert also let candidates who chose another school apply after a JAMB change of institution, but choosing ESUT from the start saves you that step and its cost.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: once your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is out, have it uploaded to your JAMB profile at an accredited CBT centre or JAMB office. ESUT’s advert makes this compulsory for every candidate, and a result that is missing on CAPS can hold your admission back even after ESUT picks you.
  4. Open the ESUT screening form: go to portal.esut.edu.ng, select the session, and under Regular Students open the Admission Screening Registration for that session (Direct Entry has its own form). Enter your JAMB registration number and fill the details form to generate an invoice.
  5. Pay ₦2,000: pay at a commercial bank through Enugu State IGR Pay Direct with the printed invoice and its reference number, or pay online with a debit card.
  6. Finish and print: return to the portal, re-enter your JAMB registration number, complete the form, confirm and submit, then print the acknowledgement slip. ESUT warns that false information leads to disqualification.
  7. Check and accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. If ESUT has offered you Mathematics, accept it, then print your JAMB admission letter.
  8. Pay the acceptance fee on the ESUT portal: blogs report ESUT’s acceptance fee at about ₦26,000 (₦26,100 in some reports). ESUT’s 2026/2027 notices I checked do not state it, so confirm the amount on the portal before you pay, and keep the receipt for clearance.

Warning

Paying ESUT’s acceptance fee does not accept your JAMB offer. Accept the admission on JAMB CAPS first, because an offer left unaccepted on CAPS can be withdrawn, and ESUT cannot register you without it.

ESUT’s 2026/2027 admission list appeared on JAMB CAPS on 13 October 2026, Myschool reported. JAMB gave candidates four weeks to accept an offer and set 31 October 2026 as the end of admissions for public universities. Myschool also reported on 28 October 2026 that ESUT had released change of course and transfer forms for 2026/2027. I have not read their terms, so check the portal if CAPS shows Mathematics when you applied for something else, or the other way round.

If a CAPS status confuses you, our JAMB CAPS guide explains each one. Candidates who chose another school can read the JAMB change of institution guide, and if you plan to sit the UTME again, start with when JAMB 2027 registration starts.

Studying Mathematics at ESUT

Mathematics is in ESUT’s Faculty of Physical Sciences. ESUT’s main campus is at Agbani in Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State, and the sciences are generally placed there, though the pages I checked do not confirm the building or campus for this department. B.Sc. Mathematics in Nigeria normally takes four years; ESUT has not stated the length on the pages I checked.

A university Mathematics degree is mostly proof and abstraction in the early years, then a mix of pure and applied options. Students who did well in secondary school mathematics by memorising methods often find the first year a shock, so be ready to write proofs as well as answers. Expect these areas:

  • Calculus and real analysis: limits, continuity and the rigorous basis for everything you did in secondary school.
  • Linear and abstract algebra: matrices, vector spaces, groups and rings.
  • Differential equations and mathematical methods: the tools physicists and engineers use.
  • Numerical analysis and computing: solving problems on a computer, usually with some programming.
  • Probability, statistics and optimisation: the bridge to data, finance and operations research.
  • A final-year project in a pure or applied topic.

Accreditation: After the National Universities Commission’s 2024 exercise, ESUT reported full accreditation for programmes in its Faculties of Law, Engineering, Sciences, Environmental Science, Education and Administration (Enugu State Government, 21 May 2025). The report names faculties, not programmes, and the sciences have since been split into Biological and Physical Sciences in ESUT’s 2026/2027 advert. I found no programme-level result for Mathematics, so ask the department to confirm its NUC status before you accept.

Career paths after Mathematics

  • Teaching mathematics in secondary schools, with a teaching qualification and TRCN registration; good maths teachers are in steady demand.
  • Data analysis, business intelligence and junior data science roles, especially if you add programming.
  • Banking, insurance and actuarial work; actuarial science needs professional exams after the degree.
  • Software and quantitative roles for graduates who build coding skills alongside the degree.
  • Postgraduate study in mathematics, statistics, operations research or computer science, leading to research and lecturing.

Mistakes Mathematics applicants make

  • Using Computer Science’s figure: Computer Science is 200 at ESUT; Mathematics is 160.
  • Picking Economics and Geography as the other two UTME subjects: it meets the rule but cuts you off from Computer Science and Data Science.
  • A weak Mathematics credit: a C6 meets the rule, but it is a poor signal for a Mathematics degree.
  • Thinking there is a Post-UTME exam: ESUT’s 2026/2027 screening had no test.
  • Missing the CAPS upload: it is compulsory in ESUT’s advert.
