Ohio State University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadline

Ohio State University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadline
Ohio State requires the SAT or ACT again, charges international undergraduates about $68,054 a year for 2026-27, and does not give them university merit scholarships. Here are the acceptance rate, English minimums, application steps and the 1 November 2026 and 15 January 2027 deadlines.

Ohio State University admission requirements for international students are straightforward on paper: you apply to the Columbus campus through the Common App, pay a $70 fee, write the Common App personal statement, submit your secondary school transcripts, and send SAT or ACT scores, which Ohio State requires again from the 2026 admissions cycle onward. If English is not your native language, you also need TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo. In fall 2023, the last year with a published Common Data Set breakdown, Ohio State admitted 6,841 of 11,948 international first-year applicants, about 57%.

Paying for it is harder. Ohio State’s merit scholarship page says international students are not eligible for university-funded merit scholarships, and the 2026-27 budget for an international undergraduate living on campus is $68,054. So treat Ohio State as a strong academic option you would mainly fund yourself or through an outside sponsor. For fall (autumn) 2027 entry, the Early Action deadline is 1 November 2026 and Regular Decision closes on 15 January 2027. All facts here were checked on Ohio State’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

Ohio State acceptance rate and class profile

Ohio State’s institutional research office has published its Columbus Common Data Set for 2023-24 (fall 2023 entry), which is the most recent edition with a full residency breakdown I could open. Its enrolment services office publishes an annual report as well.

For fall 2023, the middle 50% of enrolled students scored 1290 to 1440 on the SAT and 27 to 32 on the ACT. International enrolment has dropped since then: WOSU reported that 536 international first-years started at Ohio State in fall 2025, down 37% on the year before, inside a Columbus first-year class of 8,210. Ohio State’s 2025-26 Statistical Summary counts 5,970 international students on the Columbus campus.

Ohio State tuition for international students in 2026-27

Ohio State Student Financial Aid publishes this estimated 2026-27 budget for a non-Ohio-resident undergraduate living on campus in Columbus. International students pay the non-resident surcharge plus an international fee.

Cost item (2026-27)Amount
Tuition and mandatory fees$14,034
Non-resident surcharge$30,220
International undergraduate student fee$3,104
Housing and food$15,630
Books, supplies and equipment$1,020
Personal expenses$2,686
Transportation$1,360
Total estimated cost$68,054

The Registrar’s 2026-27 fee table gives the same picture: $14,049.80 in mandatory fees, a $30,221 non-resident surcharge and a $3,103 international fee for autumn and spring, before any programme or course fees. The admissions cost page also lists health insurance of $4,108 for international students, which is not in the total above, so plan for roughly $72,000 a year. Most first-year Columbus students must live on campus for their first two years. Ohio State’s Tuition Guarantee, which freezes costs for four years, applies to Ohio residents.

Ohio State scholarships for international students

Ohio State’s merit scholarship page is direct: international students are not eligible for university-funded merit scholarships. That rules out the National Buckeye Scholarship (up to $13,500 a year), the Maximus, Provost and Trustees awards ($1,000 to $3,000 a year), the Morrill Scholarship Program and the Stamps Eminence Scholarship, which are limited to US citizens and permanent residents, or to Ohio residents. International undergraduates also cannot file the FAFSA for US federal aid, and Ohio State’s admissions pages do not ask international first-years for the CSS Profile or ISFAA.

What that leaves:

  • College and donor awards: Ohio State points students to its Scholarship Universe portal for other scholarships, with a 1 February priority date. Read each award’s rules, because many follow the same citizenship limits.
  • Outside scholarships: government, company and foundation awards from your home country, which you then use at Ohio State.
  • Family or sponsor funding: you must show a full year of funding to get your I-20.

If you need a US public university with merit money that international students can win, compare Rutgers-New Brunswick, which gives International Student Scholarships of $5,000 to $16,000 a year, or Iowa State’s international merit scholarship.

Ohio State admission requirements for international students: the application

Ohio State’s international first-year application has these parts:

  1. Common Application: create your account, choose Ohio State, and answer Ohio State’s questions there. Pick Early Action if you will meet 1 November.
  2. Fee: $70, non-refundable. International applicants are not eligible for fee waivers.
  3. Personal statement: one of the Common App’s 2026-27 prompts.
  4. Major: for visa reasons you must choose a major that leads to a degree. Undecided and University Exploration are not allowed for international students.
  5. SAT or ACT: required (details below).
  6. Transcripts: your secondary school record including senior-year courses, sent electronically if possible. Records in another language must be translated by the issuing school, an authorised translator or a language teacher.
  7. Recommendations: optional, up to two letters from a teacher or counsellor.
  8. Honors and Scholars interest: you can indicate interest in the University Honors Program or the Ohio State Scholars Program on the Common App; Ohio State strongly advises meeting the 1 November date if you do.

Testing policy: SAT or ACT required

Ohio State announced on 12 March 2025 that it was bringing back the ACT/SAT requirement for all new first-year applicants to the Columbus campus from the 2026 admissions cycle. It now superscores, taking your highest section scores across sittings. The ACT science section and writing test are not needed. Scores must come directly from the testing agency (ACT code 3312, SAT code 1592). For Early Action the last usable dates were the 3 October SAT and 17 October ACT, so if you have not tested yet, aim for Regular Decision and book a sitting that reports before 15 January 2027. Applicants who have been out of secondary school for two or more years are exempt.

English requirements

You are exempt if you completed three full years at a regionally accredited US high school, or if you are a citizen of, or hold a bachelor’s degree from, one of the countries Ohio State lists (such as Australia, Ireland or Canada outside Quebec). Ohio State does not offer conditional admission through its American Language Program.

Early Action is non-binding. Ohio State says 1 November matters most for engineering, nursing, Honors and Scholars applicants, so if you are aiming at one of those, apply early even though the merit scholarships tied to that date are not open to you.

Early Action closes 1 November 2026

Your SAT or ACT score must reach Ohio State by the deadline. If you have no score yet, switch to Regular Decision (15 January 2027) and book a test date that reports in time.

How to write your Ohio State essay

Ohio State reads the Common App personal statement (up to 650 words). Its international application pages list no separate supplemental essay for most applicants, which puts more weight on that one piece of writing. A few practical rules:

  • Choose one story: a single experience told well beats a summary of your achievements.
  • Show the reader your context: a reviewer in Columbus may not know your school system, your exam board or what a typical day looks like for you. One clear sentence of context helps.
  • Link it to your major: you must pick a degree-seeking major, so let the essay make that choice believable.
  • If you indicate Honors or Scholars interest: that review reads the same file closely, so your activities list should show depth over volume.

For illustration only, a student applying for supply chain management might open: “When the diesel price doubled in our town, my father’s delivery van sat in the yard for three weeks, and I spent those weeks drawing maps of which shops could share a single trip.” The rest of the essay would show what the student did with that idea and what they want to learn next.

What happens after you apply

  1. Applicant Center: Ohio State uses the email on your Common App as your login and main contact. Watch it and your Applicant Center for missing items.
  2. Decision: non-Ohio and international Early Action applicants hear on 22 January 2027; Regular Decision results come on 5 March 2027.
  3. Accept: pay the acceptance fee by 1 May 2027.
  4. Financial documents and I-20: after admission, you provide proof of funding for your first year. Ohio State sets the living-cost figures; its admissions page adds $11,806 for a spouse and $5,903 for each child.
  5. Visa: pay the SEVIS fee and attend your F-1 interview.
  6. Housing: first-years generally live on campus for their first two years in Columbus.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Applying test-optional: Ohio State no longer is. An application without SAT or ACT scores for the Columbus campus is incomplete unless you are exempt.
  • Choosing “Undecided”: international students must pick a degree-seeking major.
  • Expecting merit money: the university’s merit scholarships are closed to international students.
  • Asking for a fee waiver: international applicants are not eligible for one.
  • Treating HND or three-year degrees as bachelor’s equivalents: this matters for graduate applicants (see below).
  • Forgetting health insurance: the $68,054 budget leaves out the $4,108 insurance line.

Costs that aid does not cover

Because Ohio State gives international undergraduates almost no institutional aid, nearly every cost is yours. Beyond tuition and housing, plan for the SEVIS and visa fees, flights, the health insurance charge, a winter coat and boots, programme or course fees in engineering and other majors, and summer housing if you stay in Columbus. Costs usually rise each year for non-Ohio students, so your sponsor letter should cover four years, not one.

Majors and strengths

Ohio State offers more than 200 undergraduate majors on the Columbus campus. It is especially strong in business (supply chain, operations, accounting, finance), nursing, engineering (biological, agricultural, materials and mechanical), and agriculture. It also has pre-professional tracks for dentistry, law, medicine, optometry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine that you can indicate on your application.

Campus and city

The Columbus campus is in Ohio’s capital and largest city. It is one of the largest campuses in the US, with 61,326 students in Columbus in fall 2025 and, according to local reports of the university’s census, a record 68,183 students across all campuses in fall 2026. Ohio State also runs regional campuses, but the requirements in this guide apply to the Columbus campus.

Ohio State graduate admissions for international students

Graduate and professional applications go through Graduate and Professional Admissions. The main international rules:

  • Degree equivalence: you need the equivalent of a four-year US bachelor’s degree, which Ohio State describes as 16 years of total study. Three-year degrees are not equivalent on their own, and National Diplomas and HNDs are not considered equivalent.
  • English: TOEFL iBT 79 (4.0 on the January 2026 scale), IELTS Academic 6.5 or Duolingo 120. Many programmes ask for more, and MyBest TOEFL scores are not accepted.
  • Transcripts: send records and degree statements for all post-secondary study.
  • Funding: graduate assistantships and fellowships are awarded by programmes, so contact your department early.

Who should apply to Ohio State

Apply if you have good grades, can sit the SAT or ACT in time, want a big university with strong business, nursing, engineering or agriculture programmes, and your family or sponsor can cover about $72,000 a year. Ohio State has a large international community and a clear, predictable process.

Skip it, or keep it as a back-up only, if you need institutional scholarships to attend. With no university merit aid for international students, an Ohio State admission is only useful if the money is already in place.
