Duke Online MSN 2027: Ranking, Requirements, Tuition and Can International Nurses Apply?

Duke Online MSN 2027: Ranking, Requirements, Tuition and Can International Nurses Apply?
Duke’s distance-based MSN is tied No. 2 in U.S. News 2026 and is the one top programme that may be completed abroad if admissions confirms it. Majors, requirements, $2,345 per credit tuition, visas for intensives and rolling deadlines.

The Duke University online MSN, run by the Duke University School of Nursing in Durham, North Carolina, is tied for No. 2 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs. For international nurses the answer is conditional, which makes Duke unusual among the top programmes. Duke’s international applicant page says its distance-based MSN majors may be possible to complete outside the U.S., but only if the Director of Admissions confirms it for your specific programme. Every nurse practitioner major also includes mandatory on-campus intensives in Durham, and each trip needs a fresh F-1 visa.

So a nurse in Lagos, Nairobi or Manila cannot assume a yes. You would need a written confirmation from Duke, a U.S. RN licence where you will practise, and a plan for visas and clinical placements. Nurses already licensed and living in the U.S. have a much simpler path: Duke uses rolling admission for spring 2027 (January) and fall 2027 (August), and tuition for 2026-27 is $2,345 per credit hour. All details here were checked on Duke’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

Duke online MSN ranking

Duke’s School of Nursing announced that it rose to No. 2 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs, released on 27 January 2026. The University of South Carolina also reports No. 2 in that edition, so the two share the position. Ohio State is No. 1.

Duke online MSN majors

Duke’s MSN is distance-based. Coursework is delivered on a virtual learning platform, and the advanced practice (APRN) majors add on-campus intensives with simulation and hands-on skills work. Duke’s current curriculum page lists eight nurse practitioner majors.

MajorTotal creditsClinical hours (from Duke’s course tables)
Family Nurse Practitioner49784
Adult-Gerontology NP, Acute Care48752
Adult-Gerontology NP, Primary Care42728
Psychiatric Mental Health NP49560
Women’s Health NP45672
Neonatal NP44672
Pediatric NP, Primary Care44616
Pediatric NP, Acute Care43616

Each total includes a 23-credit core. Duke grants one credit hour for every 56 clinical or practicum hours. The bulletin also lists clinical specialty add-ons in cardiology, endocrinology, oncology and orthopaedics, plus professional certificates in nursing education and health informatics. Duke’s current MSN curricula page shows only the nurse practitioner majors, so I would not plan on a non-clinical Duke MSN without asking admissions first.

On-campus intensives

Intensives are mandatory, and you must attend all of them to pass the linked course. Duke announces dates several months ahead. For a nurse living abroad, this is the biggest practical hurdle, because each visit to Durham needs a valid F-1 visa.

Can international nurses apply to the Duke online MSN?

Your situationCan you enrol? What decides it
Living outside the U.S.Possibly, case by caseDuke says distance-based MSN programmes may be completed outside the U.S., but you must confirm this with the Director of Admissions for your programme before applying.
Living in the U.S. with an RN licence in an authorised stateYes, if you meet the requirementsDuke is authorised in 45 states, Washington, D.C. and U.S. territories.
Living in LouisianaNoDuke lists Louisiana as not authorised.
Living in New YorkNot yet confirmedDuke lists New York as pending.
Living in Kansas, non-FNP or non-AG acute care NP majorCheck firstKansas raised required clinical hours to 750 for students admitted from 1 March 2025; Duke says only its FNP and AGNP-AC majors meet this.

Visa reality

Online study alone does not need a U.S. visa, but Duke’s intensives do. Its international page says students travelling to Durham need an F-1 student visa, that Duke helps issue the I-20, and that you must not enter on a B-1/B-2 tourist visa because that status does not allow study. Distance-based students need a new F-1 visa for each trip to an on-campus intensive. Duke also says it does not issue visas for residencies outside the U.S.

Licensure and clinicals

Duke asks for current RN licensure in the state where you plan to practise. Its state authorisation page warns that students may be placed at a clinical site in another state, may travel up to 120 miles, and in rare cases may need to relocate to North Carolina for rotations. Duke’s international page adds that passing the CGFNS International Qualifying Exam is a prerequisite for sitting the North Carolina RN licensing exam.

The route for a foreign-educated nurse

  1. Email Duke admissions first: ask whether your intended major can be completed from your country, including clinicals. Get the answer in writing.
  2. Do the CGFNS steps: Duke lists the CGFNS International credential evaluation and the CGFNS International Qualifying Exam among documents for graduate applicants.
  3. Get a course-by-course evaluation: from WES, SpanTran, IEE, Josef Silny, IERF, ECE, CGFNS or International Consultants of Delaware, with GPA included.
  4. Pass an English test: Duke’s page sets IELTS 7.0. Its TOEFL line lists sub-scores of 4.5 in reading and 5 in listening, speaking and writing, with a total that appears mistyped, so confirm the TOEFL minimum with admissions.
  5. Pass the NCLEX-RN and get licensed: you need an RN licence in the state where you will practise.
  6. Plan F-1 visas for every intensive: apply early, because visa delays can make you miss a mandatory session.

Duke online MSN requirements

  • A BSN from an ACEN or CCNE accredited programme, or an accredited associate degree in nursing plus a bachelor’s degree in any field.
  • A GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale gets preferential consideration; there is no stated hard minimum.
  • Current RN licensure in the state where you plan to practise.
  • Nursing experience: Duke’s requirements section asks for at least one year, while its FAQ says one year is recommended but not required. Expect reviewers to want it.
  • Major-specific experience: one year of acute care for AGNP acute care, one year of acute care paediatrics for PNP acute care, two years of clinical experience before clinical courses for neonatal NP, and ANCC psychiatric generalist certification recommended for PMHNP.
  • Three professional recommendations from the last five years. NP applicants need at least one from a provider (MD, DO, PA or NP) in the major.
  • Three required essays, each limited to 2,000 characters.
  • A resume or CV.
  • A three-credit statistics course with a grade of C or better.
  • Transcripts from every college attended.
  • An interview, by invitation only.
  • No GRE.
  • A $50 non-refundable application fee.

Duke online MSN deadlines

Duke reviews MSN applications on a rolling basis and keeps admitting until each major is full. Its apply page lists spring 2027 (January start) and fall 2027 (August start) as open terms, without fixed closing dates. Deferrals are generally not allowed. Because popular majors fill, I would apply at least six months before the term you want, and earlier if you need visas or a credential evaluation.

Duke online MSN tuition and fees for 2026-27

Duke’s 2026-27 cost sheet lists tuition at $2,345 per credit hour.

Major (credits)Tuition only at $2,345 per credit
Adult-Gerontology NP, Primary Care (42)$98,490
Pediatric NP, Acute Care (43)$100,835
Neonatal NP or Pediatric NP, Primary Care (44)$103,180
Women’s Health NP (45)$105,525
Adult-Gerontology NP, Acute Care (48)$112,560
FNP or PMHNP (49)$114,905

These totals are my calculations; Duke’s rate may rise in later years of a part-time plan.

Fees on top of tuition

  • Matriculation fee: $500 once.
  • Clinical placement fee: $1,500 once.
  • Clinical readiness fee: $650 once.
  • Transcript fee: $120 in the first semester.
  • Clinical lab fee: $125 for the physical assessment course.
  • Technology fee: $200 each semester.
  • Health fee: $523.50 for fall and spring and $374 for summer, each semester, unless waived.
  • Drug screening: about $100 to $200 a year depending on clinical site.

Costs not covered

  • Flights, hotels and F-1 visa fees for every on-campus intensive in Durham.
  • Travel of up to 120 miles to clinical sites, or relocation to North Carolina in rare cases.
  • RN licence fees in the state where you practise, CGFNS fees and NCLEX fees.
  • National certification exam fees after graduation.

Federal loans and grants are only for U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens. Duke’s School of Nursing has its own scholarships, but the pages I checked do not describe awards for international distance students.

Accreditation

Duke’s MSN is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), according to its accreditation and state authorisation page. Duke does not list certification pass rates on the pages reviewed.

How to write the Duke MSN essays

Duke uses three short essays of 2,000 characters each, roughly 300 words. Short limits punish vague writing. Use each essay for one clear point.

  • Start with a real patient or unit situation, then say what you did.
  • Name the major you are applying to and why that population.
  • Show you understand the intensives and clinical travel and have a plan for them.
  • If you are outside the U.S., say what Duke confirmed about completing the major from your country.
  • End with the role you want after graduation.

For illustration only, a neonatal NP applicant might start:

“The baby in cot four weighed 900 grams, and the only person in the unit who could place an umbilical line that night was a nurse practitioner flown in from another hospital. I want to be that person in my own unit.”

Common mistakes foreign-educated nurses make

  • Assuming online means no travel: Duke’s intensives are mandatory, and each trip needs an F-1 visa.
  • Applying before checking with admissions: Duke tells overseas applicants to confirm their programme can be completed outside the U.S. before applying.
  • Using the wrong English test: Duke’s page names TOEFL and IELTS only, so do not rely on OET or Duolingo without asking.
  • Missing the statistics course: Duke requires three credits with a C or better. Many foreign BSN transcripts show statistics inside a research course, which may not count.
  • Choosing a recommender who is not a provider: NP applicants need one letter from an MD, DO, PA or NP in the major.

Who should apply

Duke suits a licensed U.S. RN with at least a year of experience who wants a top-ranked NP major and can travel to Durham several times. It can also suit a nurse abroad who holds a U.S. RN licence and gets written confirmation from Duke that the chosen major can be completed from home.

It is a poor fit if you have no U.S. licence yet, cannot get F-1 visas easily, or are price sensitive. At $2,345 per credit, Duke costs about twice as much per credit as Ohio State and more than four times the University of Alabama.
