ESUT Cut-Off Mark for Medicine and Surgery 2027/2028: Requirements, Subject Combination and Screening

ESUT set 240 as the minimum UTME score for Medicine and Surgery in 2027/2028. See the official figures, a safe target score, O’level rules, how the no-test screening works, CAPS steps and what the MBBS at ESUT involves.

The ESUT cut off mark for Medicine and Surgery for 2026/2027 is 240 in the UTME. Enugu State University of Science and Technology printed that figure in its official 2026/2027 Post-UTME advert, posted on 4 July 2026 and signed by the Registrar, Ambrose G. Ugwu. Medicine sits in ESUT’s top tier with Nursing and Law, the highest minimum the university set for any course this session.

2027/2028 update: ESUT cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

240 is the minimum to apply: it let you register for ESUT’s screening for Medicine, and admission is decided after that. ESUT does not publish the final merit score for Medicine, and the candidates who take the limited places usually score well above 240. Below are the official numbers, a safe target score (my advice, clearly marked), the subject and O’level rules, how screening works, the CAPS steps and what the MBBS at ESUT’s College of Medicine looks like.

ESUT also did not appear on the list of institution cut-off marks that News Central TV published from the JAMB 2026 policy meeting, so there is no separate “policy meeting” figure for ESUT to quote. For Medicine, use the 240 in the advert.

The minimum has held at 240 for two sessions. The 314 figure you will see on some websites does not trace back to any ESUT document, so I would not treat it as ESUT’s cut-off. It is still a fair hint of how far above 240 the admitted Medicine candidates can be. Cut-offs move every year with the number and strength of applicants.

Safe target score for Medicine at ESUT (my advice)

This section is my judgement as an admissions adviser. It is not an ESUT rule. Medicine places are capped by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), and ESUT has not published its MDCN quota, but every medical school in Nigeria takes far fewer students than apply. Many of the strongest science candidates in Enugu and the South-East apply.

Your 2026 UTME scoreMy read for ESUT Medicine
Below 240Not eligible to apply for Medicine at ESUT this session
240 to 259Eligible, but a merit place is very unlikely. Have a second course in mind.
260 to 279Possible only with excellent O’level grades and some luck in the ranking
280 to 299Competitive
300 and aboveStrong. This is the range I would aim for.

If you are preparing for the 2027 UTME, I would aim for at least 280, and 300 if you can, with A1 or B2 in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Catchment and state of origin

ESUT does not publish a catchment list. As a university owned by the Enugu State Government, its primary catchment is Enugu indigenes, but it admits candidates from every state. ESUT has also not published any merit, catchment or ELDS split; the 45/35/20 formula you may read about is a federal university guideline, so don’t assume it applies here. For a course as crowded as Medicine, plan to win on score.

UTME subject combination and O’level for ESUT Medicine

RequirementESUT Medicine and Surgery
UTME subjectsUse of English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology (JAMB’s usual combination; confirm on the JAMB e-brochure)
O’levelFive credits: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
Exams acceptedWAEC, NECO, NABTEB (May/June results awaited in 2026 were accepted if released by 30 September 2026)
Number of sittingsNot stated in ESUT’s advert. One sitting is the safe plan for Medicine.
Direct EntryESUT screens DE candidates online, but it has not published DE entry grades for Medicine
Interview or portfolioNone mentioned in the 2026/2027 advert

The advert itself does not list subject requirements course by course. The combination above is JAMB’s usual one for Medicine and Surgery, so check ESUT’s entry on the JAMB e-brochure from your e-Facility profile before you register. A wrong UTME combination cannot be fixed by a high score.

On sittings, many Nigerian universities now insist on one sitting for Medicine. ESUT’s 2026/2027 advert does not state a sitting rule at all. If you can get all five credits in one WAEC or NECO sitting, do it, and don’t assume a combined result will be fine for Medicine.

The advert also says names must match across your O’level certificates, UTME result and other documents. If your WAEC carries a different spelling or order of names from your JAMB profile, sort it out with a sworn affidavit and the exam body before screening.

How ESUT screening works for Medicine

ESUT’s 2026/2027 screening was fully online. There was no aptitude test and no physical screening, so anyone selling “ESUT Post-UTME past questions for Medicine” was selling something you did not need.

Worked example: where you stand against the 240 minimum

ESUT has not published an aggregate formula. With no test, the only scores in the screening are your UTME score and your O’level grades, and the advert does not say how the two are weighed. So the honest calculation is your score against the minimum.

Take Chidera, who scored 268 in the 2026 UTME and has A1, A1, B2, B2 and B3 in her five subjects.

  1. Is she eligible? 268 minus 240 = 28. She is 28 marks above the Medicine minimum, so she could register.
  2. Against my safe target: 300 minus 268 = 32. She is 32 marks short of the range I would call strong.
  3. What helps her: her O’level grades are clean, in the right five subjects and on CAPS, so nothing disqualifies her at the eligibility stage.
  4. What I would tell her: keep Medicine, but accept a CAPS Transfer Approval to a related ESUT course if one comes, rather than wait for a place that may not come.

Now take Obinna with 241. 241 minus 240 = 1. He met the minimum by one mark. He was entitled to register, but against hundreds of applicants in the 270 to 320 range, a Medicine offer on merit is very unlikely.

Some Nigerian universities rank candidates by a 50:50 or 60:40 mix of UTME and Post-UTME or O’level points. That is an illustrative method used elsewhere. ESUT has not published one, and with no test in 2026/2027 there was no Post-UTME score to mix in. Blogs claiming “Post-UTME 60%” for ESUT Medicine are contradicted by the advert.

How to apply for Medicine at ESUT, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example, NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you need to buy the UTME form.
  2. Register the UTME with ESUT first: pick English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, choose Medicine and Surgery, and make ESUT your first choice. If you did not choose ESUT, a JAMB change of institution must come before ESUT’s screening registration.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: ESUT’s advert makes this compulsory for every candidate. Do it as soon as your result is out, at a JAMB-accredited centre or through your profile.
  4. Register for ESUT screening: go to portal.esut.edu.ng, select 2026/2027, and under Regular Students open “2026/2027 Admission Screening Registration”. Enter your JAMB registration number, fill the details form and generate an invoice.
  5. Pay the ₦2,000: at a commercial bank through Enugu State IGR Pay Direct with the printed invoice and reference number, or online with a debit card.
  6. Finish and print: return to the portal, re-enter your JAMB registration number, complete the form, confirm and submit, then print the acknowledgement slip.
  7. Check and accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. Read the course name before you click Accept. JAMB gives candidates four weeks to accept an offer.
  8. Pay ESUT’s acceptance fee and clear: ESUT has not published the fee in any source I could reach. Blogs report about ₦26,000 (₦26,100 in some reports). Treat that as unofficial and confirm the amount on the ESUT portal before you pay.

Warning

ESUT’s 2026/2027 screening had no aptitude test, and every genuine offer appears on JAMB CAPS. Nobody can sell you a Medicine place, a “special list” slot or Post-UTME questions for a test that did not hold. Pay only on the ESUT portal or through the bank invoice it generates.

Myschool reported on 13 October 2026 that ESUT had uploaded its 2026/2027 provisional admission list to JAMB CAPS. If you applied for Medicine, check CAPS now. JAMB told public universities to wrap up 2026 admissions by 31 October 2026. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status message, and the guide to checking your JAMB result covers your result slip.

Studying Medicine and Surgery at ESUT

Medicine and Surgery at ESUT is run by the Faculty of Clinical Medicine in the College of Medicine, which the Enugu State Government says was founded in 2006. ESUT’s main campus is at Agbani, while the medical and health programmes are linked to the College of Medicine and ESUT Teaching Hospital, Parklane, in Enugu. At an induction in May 2026 the Provost, Uchenna Ekwochi, said the college’s classrooms, hostels and teaching hospital are in one environment.

The degree is the MBBS, which in Nigeria normally runs for six years. ESUT did not state the duration in the sources I reached.

  • Early years: basic sciences, then anatomy, physiology and biochemistry for the Second MBBS examination. The Provost said the college recorded eight distinctions in Medical Biochemistry at its last Second MBBS.
  • Clinical years: medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, community medicine and the other clinical postings, at the teaching hospital.
  • Discipline: the Provost also said 14 students had been dismissed earlier for poor performance and indiscipline.
  • Induction: on 13 May 2026 the College of Medicine inducted 38 new doctors at its 16th Batch B ceremony, with the MDCN Registrar’s representative giving the oath (NAN, via Peoples Gazette).
  • After graduation: one year of compulsory housemanship on a provisional licence, then full registration with the MDCN and the choice of residency training, general practice, public health, research or work abroad.

ESUT graduates are being inducted by the MDCN, but I could not find a published MDCN accreditation status or admission quota for ESUT Medicine. Treat both as not confirmed.

For UTME revision, our JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus cover two of your three science papers.

Mistakes that cost Medicine applicants an ESUT place

  • Treating 240 as an admission score: it is the minimum to apply. Admitted Medicine candidates are usually far above it.
  • Choosing ESUT second: ESUT screens candidates who chose it, plus those who completed a JAMB change of institution before applying.
  • No O’level on CAPS: the advert makes the upload compulsory. Without it ESUT has nothing to admit you on.
  • Results out too late: awaiting results were allowed only if released by 30 September 2026.
  • Mismatched names: different names across WAEC, NECO and JAMB can hold up your screening.
  • Accepting on CAPS and stopping: the ESUT acceptance fee and clearance are separate steps.

If you are applying again next year, our guide to when JAMB 2027 registration starts tracks the dates, and JAMB change of institution explains the timing if ESUT was not your first choice.

ESUT cut off mark for Medicine: frequently asked questions

Is 250 enough for Medicine in ESUT? 250 clears ESUT’s 240 minimum, so you can apply. It is unlikely to win a Medicine place on merit, because admitted candidates usually score far higher; I would aim for 280 to 300.

Does ESUT write Post-UTME for Medicine? No. ESUT’s 2026/2027 screening was online only, with no aptitude test or physical screening for any course, Medicine included.

Can I use awaiting result for ESUT Medicine? Yes, for WAEC, NECO and NABTEB May/June 2026 results, provided they were released by 30 September 2026. Results released after that date were not accepted.

What is the ESUT cut off mark for Medicine in 2025? For 2025/2026, a blog reprint of ESUT’s notice put the Medicine minimum at 240, the same as 2026/2027. Higher figures such as 314 come from blogs and are not official ESUT cut-offs.

Sources and updates

The 240 minimum for Medicine and Surgery, the ₦2,000 fee, the 7 July to 15 August 2026 window, the no-test rule, the awaiting result and CAPS upload rules, the Direct Entry instructions and the portal steps come from ESUT’s 2026/2027 Post-UTME screening notice posted on 4 July 2026 and the full Post-UTME advert signed by the Registrar, Ambrose G. Ugwu. The 2025/2026 figure of 240 comes from DTW Tutorials’ reprint of ESUT’s 2025/2026 screening notice (30 July 2025); I could not open the original notice. The 314 figure is from Legit.ng (updated 14 November 2025) and is not an ESUT figure. The national minimum of 150, the 31 October 2026 deadline and the four-week acceptance window come from the News Agency of Nigeria report of 11 May 2026. The May 2026 induction of 38 doctors and the Provost’s remarks come from a NAN report carried by Peoples Gazette. The College of Medicine’s founding year is from the Enugu State Government. The admission list date is from Myschool (13 October 2026). The acceptance fee is from blogs (Legit.ng, backtoschool) and is unofficial. UTME subjects and O’level subjects are JAMB’s usual requirements for Medicine and Surgery, not an ESUT-specific remark. This page was checked on 29 October 2026 and will be updated if ESUT publishes a merit cut-off for Medicine.
