Columbia Engineering graduate admission for international students needs an online application with an $85 fee, a personal statement of 250 to 1,000 words, three letters of recommendation, a resume, transcripts, an English test score if your degree comes from a non-exempt country, and, for every MS applicant, a short recorded video interview. The GRE is optional for 2027 entry. Doctoral applications for fall 2027 close on 15 December 2026, and most MS programmes close on 15 February 2027, with priority deadlines of 15 January 2027 for the larger departments.
Columbia Engineering, officially The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, is tied at No. 18 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Engineering Schools ranking. One rule matters a lot to African applicants: Columbia does not ask for an English test from applicants whose undergraduate degree comes from Nigeria, Ghana or Kenya, among other listed countries. The hard part is cost. The MS is largely self-funded at $2,700 per credit point, and Columbia’s full budget for a master’s year was $103,304 in 2025-26.

Columbia Engineering admission requirements for international students
- Online application and $85 fee: paid by card. Fee waivers are for US citizens and permanent residents with need, US military members and veterans, and some special programmes, so most international applicants pay.
- Personal statement: 250 to 1,000 words is recommended. Use at least one-inch margins, double spacing and a standard font, with your name on every page. Columbia says you must write it yourself.
- Three recommendation letters: from professors who taught you or from current or former supervisors. Personal references are not accepted, and you must not draft any part of a letter.
- Resume or CV: list employment with dates, research, honours, service, activities and publications.
- Transcripts: upload an official or student copy from every college you attended for at least a term, including summer programmes. Portal screenshots are not accepted. Non-English records need a translation from a reputable provider. Official transcripts are sent only after you are admitted and accept.
- GRE (optional): school code 2111; scores last five years and Columbia does not superscore. Applied Physics doctoral applicants may add the GRE Physics Subject Test.
- English test: see below.
- Video interview (MS only): it opens in your status portal after you pay. You get three random behavioural questions, 90 seconds to think and three minutes to record. Turn off any VPN before you start.
- Optional publication: you may upload a paper and explain your part in it, with a professor’s email to confirm.
You must submit everything yourself. Columbia does not accept applications through agents or third-party vendors, apart from some Fulbright, DAAD and similar sponsored submissions.
English test rules and exempt countries
You need a TOEFL iBT (Home Edition accepted), IELTS Academic, PTE Academic or Duolingo English Test result unless your undergraduate degree is from Australia, Canada, Ghana, Ireland, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, Singapore, the United Kingdom or the United States. A completed master’s from one of those countries also exempts you. Columbia publishes no minimum score. Scores are valid for two years and must still be valid when your first term starts, so a test taken early in 2025 may not last until September 2027.
Columbia Engineering deadlines for fall 2027
Doctoral programmes (MS leading to PhD, PhD and EngScD) close on 15 December 2026. MS deadlines vary by department.
| MS programme | Priority deadline | Regular deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Science, Data Science, Electrical Engineering | 15 Jan 2027 | 15 Feb 2027 |
| Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research | 15 Jan 2027 | 15 Feb 2027 |
| Business Analytics, Management Science and Engineering | 15 Jan 2027 | 15 Feb 2027 |
| Civil Engineering programmes | 1 Feb 2027 | 15 Feb 2027 |
| Financial Engineering | None | 15 Jan 2027 |
| Artificial Intelligence | 15 Mar 2027 | 15 Apr 2027 |
| All other MS programmes | None | 15 Feb 2027 |
Spring entry uses a 15 October deadline for all departments; for spring 2028 that is 15 October 2027 (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens). Columbia says applicants who want a scholarship, fellowship or assistantship should apply for fall, not spring, and it does not offer deferrals. Supporting materials can follow two to four weeks after the deadline, but international applicants who need a visa are told to apply early.
One application per term
Columbia Engineering lets you apply to only one programme per term. Breaking this rule can invalidate all your applications, and fees are not refunded, so choose between, say, MS Computer Science and MS Data Science before you pay.
PhD funding at Columbia Engineering
Doctoral and MS leading to PhD students are considered for funding through the admission application itself. Columbia describes the package as an annual stipend, a full tuition allowance, Columbia student health insurance, and health and university services fees. Awards are based on merit and depend on satisfactory progress. Teaching and research assistantships carry tuition exemption and a living stipend for up to 20 hours of work a week, while fellowships pay a stipend with no service duties. Columbia does not state the number of guaranteed years on its funding page.
| Columbia minimum PhD pay, 2025-26 | 9-month | 12-month |
|---|---|---|
| Students on appointment (TA or RA) | $43,698 | $49,522 |
| Students not on appointment (fellowship stipend) | $42,970 | $48,551 |
These minimums are Columbia’s published figures for 2025-26; the university has not yet posted 2026-27 minimums on that page. If you win an outside fellowship, Columbia may reduce its own award, so report any external funding to your department.
MS funding and fellowships
Master’s funding is limited and not guaranteed. Columbia lists these awards on its graduate funding page.
| Fellowship | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| CMA CGM Excellence Fund for Education | $50,000 | Merit and need; interest in logistics, AI and Lebanon’s economic development; apply after admission application |
| Shardashish Interschool Fellowship | Up to $50,000 for one year | Financial need; preference for commitment to India |
| Behring Foundation Fellowship | Up to $40,000 | Linked to the Brazil financial aid fund |
| Dean’s MS Academic Excellence Fellowship | Partial tuition | Merit; awarded by departments, no separate form |
| Graduate Fellowship in Engineering for Change | Partial tuition | Students facing extraordinary challenges with need |
| Columbia-CUNY Pathways Fellowship | Partial tuition | Recent CUNY graduates |
Paid roles also exist for MS students: teaching assistant (about 20 hours a week), course assistant (10 to 15 hours), lab assistant and grader (about 10 hours each). Casual campus jobs are open to any student regardless of citizenship, although F-1 rules limit on-campus work to 20 hours a week in term.
Columbia Engineering tuition and cost of attendance
Columbia’s Student Financial Services page still shows the 2025-26 graduate engineering budget. The bulletin already gives some 2026-27 fees.
| MS cost item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition, 2025-26 | $2,700 per point ($32,400 per 12-point term) |
| Tuition for a full year at 12 points a term, 2025-26 | $64,800 |
| Full-year budget with housing, food, insurance and fees, 2025-26 | $103,304 |
| University services and support fee, 2026-27 | $703 per term (full-time master’s) |
| Health and related services fee, 2026-27 | $759 per term |
| International services charge, 2026-27 | $175 per term |
| Master’s activities fee, 2026-27 | $480 per term (first year, full time) |
| Document fee, 2026-27 | $105 once |
The 2025-26 budget includes $15,723 for housing, $7,192 for food and $5,367 for health insurance. At $2,700 a point, the 30-point minimum MS comes to $81,000 in tuition alone (my arithmetic), and the MS in AI and IEOR programmes add a $1,144 programme fee per full-time term.
STEM OPT after a Columbia engineering degree
Engineering degrees are on the Department of Homeland Security STEM Designated Degree Program List. F-1 graduates can normally work for 12 months on OPT and then apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension with an E-Verify employer. Check the CIP code on your I-20 for your exact programme before you accept an offer.
How to contact potential PhD advisers at Columbia
Columbia’s funding is decided through your application, and departments look for faculty who want to supervise you.
- Shortlist two to four faculty: read their recent papers and lab pages.
- Email in October or November: before the 15 December deadline, while there is time to reply.
- Keep it short: your background, one result, the question you want to work on, and your CV.
- Name them in your statement: whether or not they reply.
A sample opening, for illustration: “Dear Professor [Name], I am a civil engineering graduate of [University] applying to Columbia’s MS leading to PhD in Civil Engineering for fall 2027. My final-year project measured [result] in [setting], and your group’s work on [topic] is the direction I want to take it. Will you be considering new doctoral students next year?”
How to write the Columbia Engineering personal statement
Columbia’s limit is generous at up to 1,000 words, which gives you room to be specific.
- Start with your preparation: the courses, projects or jobs that got you ready for this exact programme.
- Explain why Columbia: name courses, labs, centres or New York industry links that match your goals.
- Describe relevant experience with your own role and results.
- State your career goal clearly, for example a quant role, a PhD, or a job in your home country’s energy sector.
- Use a short paragraph for special circumstances, such as a strike that extended your degree or a weak semester you recovered from.
- Keep it in your own words. Columbia warns that plagiarism can lead to denial or withdrawal of admission.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Taking an English test you do not need: if your bachelor’s is from Nigeria, Ghana or Kenya, you are exempt. Do not spend money on IELTS unless your degree is from a non-listed country.
- Using an agent: Columbia rejects applications submitted through agents or vendors.
- Uploading portal screenshots instead of transcripts: use an official copy or a student copy issued by the registrar.
- Converting your CGPA yourself: report your grade as it appears on your transcript (for example a 5-point Nigerian CGPA) and let the reader use the grading key.
- Applying to two programmes in one term: only one is allowed.
- Skipping the video interview: an MS application is incomplete without it.
- Letting test scores expire: TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo scores must still be valid on the day your first term starts.
Columbia’s admission pages do not address three-year bachelor’s degrees. If your degree is three years long, email the graduate admissions office before applying.
Costs that scholarships and PhD funding do not cover
- Visa application and SEVIS I-901 fees.
- Flights, rent deposits and furniture in New York before your first stipend or job payment.
- Dependants’ insurance and living costs.
- Course materials and lab fees, which vary by course.
- Late registration fees of $50 to $100 if you miss registration dates.
Who should apply to Columbia Engineering
Apply for an MS if you can fund about $100,000 a year, want a career in New York’s finance, data or technology sector, and have a strong quantitative record. Where your department has a priority deadline, aim for it.
Apply for a PhD or MS leading to PhD if you have research experience and can name Columbia faculty in your area. If you need funded master’s study, Columbia’s MS is a hard fit; look at the PhD route or at public universities where thesis MS students sometimes hold assistantships.
