Morehead-Cain Scholarship 2027 for International Students: Coverage, Nomination and Deadline
The Morehead-Cain Scholarship pays four years of tuition, housing, meals, books and summers at UNC Chapel Hill. Here is how international students get nominated or referred, and the 1 October 2027 deadline.

The Morehead-Cain Scholarship is a full undergraduate scholarship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) in the United States. It pays for four years of study, including tuition, fees, housing, meals, books and a laptop, and adds a funded summer programme each year. International students can apply, but only through a nominating school or the UNC admissions referral route.

The Morehead-Cain scholarship application for the Class of 2031 closed on 1 October 2026. The deadline for the following round is 1 October 2027, so if you finish secondary school in spring 2028, this is your cycle. Below are the eligibility rules for international applicants, the nomination routes, the yearly timeline and the selection stages.

Who can apply for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship as an international student

The basic requirements are the same for everyone. You must be on track to graduate from secondary school in the spring before you would start at UNC, and you must be a competitive applicant for admission to UNC Chapel Hill. What changes is how you get into the process.

Where you are at schoolHow you enter the Morehead-Cain process
North CarolinaSchool nomination, affiliate programme nomination or self-nomination
Other US statesNomination by a nominating school or affiliate programme
CanadaNomination by a nominating school or affiliate programme; each Canadian nominating school can put forward three seniors a year
United KingdomNomination by a nominating school or affiliate programme
Any other countryNomination by a nominating school or affiliate programme, or the Admissions Referral Program (ARP) through UNC

What if your school is not a nominating school?

Most students outside North America and the UK fall into this group. Your route is the Admissions Referral Program. You apply to UNC Chapel Hill by its Early Action deadline. The UNC Office of Undergraduate Admissions then flags exceptional out-of-state and international applicants to Morehead-Cain, and the foundation invites a few of them to apply directly.

Two things follow from this. First, you cannot simply fill a Morehead-Cain form on your own; you need either a nomination or a UNC referral. Second, applying to UNC by Early Action is not optional for you, because the referral only looks at Early Action applicants. If you are not sure whether your school nominates, ask your counsellor to contact Morehead-Cain before June.

Timing

International applicants who are not at a nominating school must apply to UNC Chapel Hill by Early Action (15 October 2027). A Regular Decision application cannot be picked up by the referral programme.

How to apply for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship

  1. Check your school: ask your counsellor in your penultimate year whether your school or any programme you belong to nominates for Morehead-Cain. Nominations are submitted by the end of June.
  2. If nominated: complete the Morehead-Cain application on the Morehead-Cain website between mid-August and 1 October. Your counsellor sends the school materials by the same date.
  3. If not nominated: submit a full UNC Chapel Hill application through UNC Undergraduate Admissions by Early Action (15 October) so you can be considered through the referral programme.
  4. Apply to UNC either way: admission to UNC is a separate process and the scholarship depends on it. Morehead-Cain asks nominees to have their UNC application complete by Early Action or by 1 January for Regular Decision.
  5. Prepare for interviews: international semifinalists get a video interview in December. Finalists then attend the selection events in early spring.
  6. Accept by April: if selected, you confirm your place by the April deadline.

Early Decision at another university

You may apply Early Decision to another college and still stay in the Morehead-Cain process. If that college admits you, tell Morehead-Cain straight away. If it does not, and you want to remain a Morehead-Cain candidate, do not file a binding Early Decision II application elsewhere.

How competitive is it?

It is very selective. For the class that entered in 2022, about 2,000 students were nominated and 75 were chosen, and that class included ten international scholars from Canada, India, South Sudan, the UK and Vietnam. Around 200 Morehead-Cain scholars are on campus at any time. There is also a small UNC Sophomore Selection, which aims to invite 12 to 15 current UNC sophomores into the programme.

I would treat the four pillars as the real test. Grades get you to a competitive UNC application; the selectors then look for leadership you started yourself, consistent character, real curiosity in your studies and a habit of physical activity, whether sport, hiking or anything you do seriously.

Other options at UNC and in the US

Morehead-Cain also runs a separate Global Fellows programme for students already studying at another university, who spend a year full-time at UNC. It needs a faculty nomination; the 2026 nomination window closed on 15 October 2026 and the application deadline is 8:00 a.m. EDT on 30 October 2026. It is a different award from the four-year scholarship described here.

What the Morehead-Cain application asks for

Once you are nominated or invited, the application itself is done in the Morehead-Cain online portal. The foundation’s checklist names these parts:

  1. School details: your school, your senior-year courses and your counsellor’s name. Your counsellor then submits their own materials by 1 October.
  2. One recommender: someone who knows you well and can speak to your character, leadership and commitment to learning. Enter their details early so they have time.
  3. Essay responses: written by you, in the portal. The foundation suggests drafting in a word processor and pasting in, because the portal logs you out after a period of inactivity.
  4. Review and submit: read the whole application through before you press submit.

Morehead-Cain does not publish the essay prompts or word limits ahead of time on its checklist; you see them in the portal when the application opens in mid-August. Only you should log in, write and edit, since every applicant signs a statement of honesty.

How to write Morehead-Cain essays that work

The foundation has said plainly what it wants from essays: they should sound so much like you that a close friend would recognise you as the writer. It also wants your values shown through things you have done, not described in the abstract. Read each pillar the way the foundation defines it:

PillarHow Morehead-Cain describes itWhat to show
LeadershipImpact, not titles; motivating others toward shared goalsSomething you started or changed, and what happened because of it
CharacterCourage, humility, integrity, empathy; still growingA hard choice you made, or a mistake you learned from
ScholarshipA lasting love of learning in a demanding setting; no minimum GPA or scoreA question you chased beyond the syllabus
Physical vigorSustained commitment to an active life; due consideration for physical limitationsTraining, competing or performing over years, and what it taught you

A sample opening

To show the tone only. Your prompts will differ, and your story should be your own:

“Every Saturday at 6 a.m., I open the gate of a football pitch in Accra that floods whenever it rains. Two years ago I asked the assembly member why, got no answer, and spent my holiday measuring the drains with a borrowed tape. The report I wrote did not fix the pitch, but it did get three of us onto the town planning committee’s agenda.”

In three sentences you see physical activity, leadership by doing, curiosity and honesty about a partial result. That is the kind of evidence the pillars are asking for.

Eligibility edge cases for international applicants

  • Gap year or already at university: the scholarship is for students graduating secondary school in the spring before they start at UNC. If you are already at university elsewhere, look at the separate Global Fellows programme instead.
  • International student at a US or Canadian school: your route depends on where you are at school, not your passport. If your school nominates, you go through the school.
  • No test scores: the 2026 to 2027 cycle was test-optional in line with UNC. Check UNC’s policy again for your year, because UNC admission is a separate decision.
  • Physical disability: the foundation says applicants with physical limitations get due consideration under physical vigor. Show commitment to wellbeing in whatever form fits you.
  • Applying Early Decision elsewhere: allowed, as explained above, but an Early Decision II application elsewhere takes you out of the running.

Common mistakes

  • Missing UNC’s Early Action date when you rely on the referral route.
  • Asking your counsellor about nomination in September, after the 30 June deadline has passed.
  • Choosing a recommender for their title rather than how well they know you.
  • Listing positions held instead of describing what changed because of you.
  • Letting a parent or agent write or edit inside the portal.
  • Being unready for a video interview: poor connection, a noisy room or a camera you have never tested.

What happens after you apply

The written application is your first and main chance to be known. Out-of-state and international semifinalists are told in mid-December and interviewed by video. Finalists hear in mid-January, take part in a finalist and alumni connection experience in January and February, and then the Final Selection Experience in February or March. Scholars are named after that and must accept by April. Separately, UNC sends its own admission decision, and you need to be admitted to UNC to take up the scholarship.

If you are not selected, your UNC application continues on its own. Plan a full US list in parallel, because Morehead-Cain picks a very small class.

Costs the scholarship may not cover

The published coverage is tuition and fees, housing, meals, books, a laptop and the summer programmes. The sources I checked do not list the costs below, so budget for them or ask the foundation when you are a finalist:

  • Application costs: UNC’s application fee and any test or English exam you choose to send
  • Passport, the US student visa application fee and the SEVIS fee
  • Flights to the US and home during breaks
  • Personal spending, winter clothing and phone costs

Who should apply, and who shouldn’t

Go for it if you are in your final or penultimate year of secondary school, have strong grades in demanding courses, and can point to leadership you started, a sport or physical practice you have kept up for years and real curiosity outside class. If your school is not a nominating school, you must also be willing to apply to UNC Chapel Hill by Early Action.

It is not for you if you are already at university, want to study somewhere other than UNC, or would only attend with this scholarship and have no other plan. Selection is so tight that even excellent students are turned down, so treat it as one strong application among several.
