University of Arizona Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

University of Arizona Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
The University of Arizona admits most applicants, needs no SAT, and gives 82% of admitted international students a Global Wildcat Award of $4,000 to $20,000 a year. Costs, English scores, the essay and the 1 November 2026 deadline.

The University of Arizona admission requirements for international students are among the most approachable at any large US research university. You apply through the Common App, send translated transcripts, and prove your English with a test score or with qualifying school grades. The SAT and ACT are not required, recommendation letters are not needed for general admission, and the 500-word essay is strongly encouraged but optional. For fall 2027, the Early Action deadline is 1 November 2026, and that date also gives you priority for merit scholarships.

On money, Arizona does better than many state universities. Every international first-year is considered automatically for the First-Year Global Wildcat Award, which on the university’s latest published scale is worth $4,000 to $20,000 a year depending on your GPA. Arizona says 82% of admitted international students received a Global Wildcat Award. This guide covers the acceptance rate, the 2026-27 cost, English rules, the essay and the fall 2027 timeline, checked against University of Arizona pages on 29 October 2026.

University of Arizona ranking

In the U.S. News 2027 Best Colleges edition, Arizona is tied at #121 among National Universities and tied at #58 among public universities, up six places from the previous edition. The U.S. News page itself could not be loaded, so these positions come from the Arizona Technology Council’s report on the 2027 edition. In the same edition Arizona State University shared the #121 spot.

Arizona’s subject rankings tend to be stronger than its overall number. In the 2025 edition, for example, U.S. News placed the Eller College of Management’s undergraduate management information systems programme at #2 in the country, according to the university’s own announcement.

University of Arizona acceptance rate and class profile

Arizona admits most applicants who meet its core requirements. These figures come from the university’s 2025-26 Common Data Set (fall 2025 entry) as transcribed by the data site Esslo; the official PDF could not be opened directly for this guide, so treat them as close but confirm on the university’s institutional research page.

Measure (fall 2025)Figure
First-year applicantsAbout 56,000
Acceptance rateAbout 83.5%
International applicants admittedAbout 50%
SAT middle 50% (submitters)1090 to 1320
ACT middle 50% (submitters)20 to 28
Average high school GPA3.43
Total undergraduates43,294
Student to faculty ratio19 to 1

The gap between the overall and international rates is large. Domestic applicants were admitted about nine times in ten; international applicants about half the time. That gap usually comes down to incomplete files, missing English evidence and grades that do not convert well to a US GPA, all of which you can control.

University of Arizona tuition for international students in 2026-27

Arizona’s international admissions office publishes this one-year estimate for main-campus undergraduates.

Cost item (main campus, one academic year)Amount
Tuition and fees$46,068
Living expenses (amount you must show for the I-20)$18,250
Health insurance$2,765
Approximate total$67,083

Tuition and fees vary by college and by your scholarship, so treat $46,068 as a guide. The university’s FY27 (2026-27) tuition chart lists nonresident undergraduate tuition at $42,600 plus $1,738 in mandatory fees and a $20 first-year fee, which is the base most international students pay before programme fees. In October 2026 the university announced that it would extend its tuition freeze to nonresident undergraduates for fall 2027, so a 2027 entrant should face rates close to these.

University of Arizona scholarships for international students

Arizona has no need-based aid for international students, but its merit awards are automatic and wide-reaching. You do not fill in a separate form for the main award.

First-Year Global Wildcat Award

The award is set by your high school GPA after Arizona converts it to the US 4.0 scale. The latest published scale, for students who entered in fall 2025, is:

Converted GPAGlobal Wildcat Award per year
3.90 to 4.00$20,000
3.75 to 3.89$16,000
3.50 to 3.74$12,500
3.25 to 3.49$7,500
3.00 to 3.24$4,000

Arizona’s first-year merit awards renew for up to four consecutive years (eight fall and spring semesters) if you meet the renewal requirements in the university’s terms and conditions. Apply by 1 November for priority consideration. Arizona has not published a separate fall 2027 scale; if it changes, the university’s cost page will show the new figures.

Other awards open to international first-years

  • International Service and Leadership Scholarship: up to $5,000, one year only. You apply after admission with a 300 to 500 word essay on what you expect from an Arizona degree and a CV of work, volunteering and school activities. Priority deadline 1 December; final deadline 1 February. Recipients are expected to help the international admissions office during their first year.
  • GatosMX Tuition Discount: for graduates of high schools in the Mexican states of Baja California, Chihuahua, Sinaloa or Sonora. Tuition becomes about $21,000 a year, and it cannot be combined with other university awards.
  • Scholarship Universe: a matching platform for admitted students that lists departmental and external awards.

On the top tier, a $20,000 award brings the estimated $67,083 down to about $47,000 a year. On the lowest tier you would still need about $63,000.

University of Arizona admission requirements for international students: the application

International students follow the same Common App process as US applicants, with extra document and English steps.

  • Application: Common App, about an hour to complete. The fee is $80 for applicants who are not Arizona residents, and it is non-refundable.
  • Transcripts: grade reports from secondary school. All documents must be in English, with certified translations where needed, and official translated transcripts are required before you enroll.
  • Essay: 500 words, strongly encouraged but not required (prompts below).
  • English proficiency: a test score or a qualifying coursework route.
  • Recommendations: not required for general admission; optional for the Franke Honors College.
  • SAT or ACT: not required. Scores you send can be used for course placement or to show you meet the core competency requirements.

Testing policy

Arizona does not require the SAT or ACT for general admission. Admission and the Global Wildcat Award rest mainly on your GPA and coursework, so a good transcript matters far more than a test score. Send scores only if they help, for example an SAT reading and writing score of 580+ that also clears the English requirement.

English requirements

Arizona asks for English proof from every applicant whose first language is not English or who studied in a non-English-speaking country, whatever their citizenship. Scores must be under two years old and sent directly by the testing agency.

TestUndergraduate minimum
TOEFL iBT (taken before January 2026)79
TOEFL iBT (new scale, from January 2026)4
IELTS Academic (incl. Online and Indicator)6.5
Duolingo English Test110
PTE Academic60
Cambridge English180 or C1
SAT reading and writing / ACT English580 / 21

You can also meet the rule through coursework: a C or better in English at Cambridge IGCSE or O Level, a 5 in IB English A Higher Level, or three years at a high school where English is the language of instruction with a C or better in English. If your score falls short, Arizona’s Center for English as a Second Language offers a U-Track pathway with conditional admission for scores from IELTS 5.5, TOEFL 59 or Duolingo 90.

Regular Decision has no fixed closing date, but programmes fill and international students also need time for the I-20 and visa, so I would treat 1 November as your real deadline.

How to write the University of Arizona essay

Arizona’s essay is 500 words and has two prompts. The first asks why the University of Arizona is the right fit for you and how your chosen field connects to what you care about, what you aim for and what you believe in. The second asks if there is anything else you want to share. The essay is optional, but readers look at it alongside your grades, and the Franke Honors College requires it.

How to use the 500 words well:

  1. Start with your field, not the university: say what you want to study and the moment it became real for you.
  2. Name specific Arizona features: a department, a lab, a programme such as Eller’s management information systems, or a research area like space and planetary science. General praise of “a great campus” does nothing.
  3. Link it to a goal: a job, a problem in your country, a business you want to build.
  4. Use the second prompt carefully: explain a gap in your record, a disrupted school year or a grading system Arizona may not know.

A sample opening, for illustration only: “When the borehole in our village failed for the third dry season, I started reading about groundwater, and that is why I want to study hydrology in a desert city that has to solve the same problem.”

What happens after you apply

  1. Next Steps Center: you track missing items and, after admission, pay the deposit here.
  2. Decision: Early Action applicants hear from 15 January 2027; others hear in batches through spring.
  3. Scholarship: your Global Wildcat Award is decided during admission and shown with or soon after your offer.
  4. I-20: you show funds for the cost not covered by your award, including the $18,250 living estimate.
  5. Visa: pay the SEVIS fee and book an F-1 visa interview.
  6. Arrival: submit final translated transcripts before you enroll.

Common mistakes international applicants make with Arizona

  • Applying after 1 November: you can still be admitted, but you lose priority for merit aid and honors.
  • Leaving out the essay: it is optional, yet it is your only chance to explain context such as a strike-shortened school year.
  • Sending untranslated documents: everything uploaded must be in English.
  • Using an old TOEFL score that has expired: scores older than two years are not accepted.
  • Ignoring the GPA conversion: your award depends on the US GPA Arizona calculates. A few weak grades in senior years can drop you a tier.
  • Budgeting with the top award: only students with a converted 3.90+ receive $20,000.

Costs the Global Wildcat Award does not cover

  • Living costs: the award is a tuition award; the $18,250 living estimate is yours to cover.
  • Health insurance: $2,765 a year on the university’s estimate.
  • Programme fees: some colleges charge more than the base tuition.
  • Summer: the I-20 living figure covers one academic year; staying in Tucson over summer costs extra.
  • Travel and visa: flights, the SEVIS fee and the visa fee.
  • Heat: Tucson summers are very hot, so budget for fans or air-conditioned housing if you stay.

Majors, campus and city

The University of Arizona is the state’s land-grant flagship and a large research university in Tucson, in the Sonoran Desert about 100 km north of the Mexican border. Its research profile is strongest in space and planetary sciences, optical sciences, astronomy, earth and environmental sciences, and arid-lands water research. The Eller College of Management is known for management information systems, and the university also has large programmes in engineering, nursing, public health, the life sciences and the humanities.

Tucson is a mid-sized city with a lower cost of living than the big coastal cities, a mild winter and a long, hot summer. The campus is walkable and has a streetcar line connecting it to downtown.

University of Arizona graduate admissions in brief

Graduate study runs through the Graduate College, and you apply to each programme separately. Deadlines, test requirements and funding vary by department. Most funded PhD students receive teaching or research assistantships through their department; master’s students usually pay their own way unless the programme says otherwise. English minimums for graduate programmes are listed on the same international admissions English page, and some departments set higher scores.

Arizona compared with similar public universities

Arizona’s Global Wildcat Award is the most widely given award in this group, and it is the least selective of the five.

Who should apply to the University of Arizona

Apply if you have a solid record (a converted GPA of 3.0 or higher gets you into the Global Wildcat range), want a big research university with automatic merit aid, and can fund roughly $47,000 to $63,000 a year after your award. It is a good fit for students who want space science, optics, water and environment, or business information systems.

It is a weaker fit if you need a full scholarship or need-based aid.
