UT Austin Cockrell Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines
UT Austin Cockrell is tied for No. 6 in the U.S. News 2026 engineering list. International applicants face a 1 December 2026 deadline, a $90 fee, GRE rules that differ by department, TOEFL 79 or IELTS 6.5, full PhD funding in ECE and $9,660 a semester tuition.

UT Austin Cockrell engineering graduate admission for international students has one date to remember: 1 December 2026. Electrical and computer, mechanical, aerospace, and civil, architectural and environmental engineering all close their fall 2027 applications that day. International applicants pay a $90 fee and cannot get it waived in ECE. The GRE is not considered in ECE, not required in civil engineering, optional in mechanical engineering, and still required in aerospace engineering and in operations research and industrial engineering.

The Cockrell School of Engineering is tied for No. 6 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Engineering Schools list. Its graduate tuition is low for a top-ten school: $9,660 a semester for a nonresident graduate student on a full nine-hour load in 2026-27. PhD admits in ECE receive full financial support for the whole degree, while master’s students are usually self-funded. The English minimum is TOEFL iBT 79 or IELTS 6.5, and Duolingo is accepted from the fall 2027 cycle.

Cockrell graduate admission requirements

  1. Application and fee: pay through UT’s MyStatus portal two to three business days after you submit; you cannot upload materials until the fee is paid.
  2. Transcripts: from every college or university you attended.
  3. Statement of purpose. In civil engineering, say here if you do not want funding consideration or already have your own funding.
  4. Three recommendation letters, preferably academic. Mechanical engineering asks that professors use their university email address.
  5. Resume or CV: required in mechanical engineering, suggested in civil engineering.
  6. English test score for international applicants who are not exempt.
  7. GRE only where your programme requires it.

Mechanical engineering accepts applicants with a bachelor’s in engineering or a physical science such as chemistry or physics. Aerospace wants aerospace, engineering mechanics or a closely related engineering degree. Both set a 3.0 minimum GPA over junior and senior years plus any graduate work.

TOEFL and IELTS scores must be from the last two years. You are exempt if you come from a country where English is the only official language, or if your bachelor’s degree is from a US university or a university in such a country. The rule turns on “only”. Nigeria and Ghana have English as their sole official language; Kenya, where Swahili is also official, and Cameroon, which also uses French, would not qualify on that reading. Check the Graduate School’s country list before you skip the test. A master’s from an English-only country does not exempt you if your bachelor’s was elsewhere.

Cockrell application deadlines 2026-27

Electrical and Computer Engineering1 December 2026, 11 p.m. CentralNot stated on the ECE FAQ
Mechanical Engineering1 December 20261 October 2027
Aerospace Engineering1 December 2026 (fall and summer)1 October 2027
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering1 December 2026 (fall and summer)1 September 2027

The spring 2027 dates have passed, so the spring column shows them one year on (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens). Mechanical engineering warns that spring funding is very limited and goes to doctoral students first. ECE starts reviewing in late December and sends decisions from January to mid-March; applying early gives no advantage there.

No fee waiver for international applicants in ECE

UT ECE offers fee waivers only to US citizens and permanent residents who hold or applied for certain fellowships. Budget $90 for each programme you apply to.

Funding for PhD and master’s students

ECE evaluates admission and funding together, with no separate aid form, and every PhD admit receives full financial support for the length of the PhD through a research assistantship, teaching assistantship, fellowship or a mix. Chemical engineering says its package covers tuition and health insurance for the length of the degree, and that for research assistants the supervising professor pays tuition and fees. Cockrell does not publish a single stipend figure, and no department page I checked gave one, so ask for the amount in your offer letter.

  • Recruitment fellowships: department committees nominate top applicants; you do not apply separately. All admitted chemical engineering PhD applicants are nominated.
  • Assistantships: TA, research assistant and assistant instructor posts can include tuition benefits and health insurance. International students must meet UT’s international teaching assistant requirements.
  • Master’s students: ECE gives first-year TA posts to master’s applicants who are GEM, McNair or other selected fellows. Most international MSE students are self-funded.

External money helps a lot at a public university. Our list of American scholarships for international students covers awards that can follow you to Austin.

Tuition for a self-funded MSE

2026-27 engineering graduate tuition, 9 hoursPer semesterTwo semesters
Texas resident$5,277$10,554
Nonresident (including international)$9,660$19,320

The two-semester column is my arithmetic from the catalogue’s per-semester rate. Rent, food, health insurance, books and summer courses come on top, and UT’s international office sets the amount you must show for the I-20. Check its current estimate before you gather bank statements.

STEM OPT after graduation

Engineering MSE and PhD degrees fall under engineering fields on the US Department of Homeland Security’s STEM Designated Degree Program List, so an F-1 graduate can normally add a 24-month STEM extension to 12 months of OPT. You need the right CIP code on your I-20 and an employer enrolled in E-Verify. Federal rules can change, so confirm with UT’s international office.

How to contact potential PhD advisers

ECE decides funding at admission, but research assistantships across Cockrell come from faculty grants, and a professor who already knows your name can argue for your file. Read the group websites in your track, choose two or three faculty, and write a short, specific email in October or November.

For illustration, an opening could read: “Dear Professor Banda, I am applying to the UT Austin Mechanical Engineering PhD for fall 2027. Your lab’s recent work on battery thermal management is close to my final-year project, where I measured cell temperatures in solar storage packs in Lusaka. Would you consider a new student next year?” Attach a one-page CV and keep the email under 200 words. The name and project are invented.

Writing the statement of purpose for Cockrell

Because ECE does not look at the GRE, the statement and letters carry more weight there. Open with the research problem you want to work on, show one or two projects with numbers (what you built, measured or published), and then name the track and the faculty. In ECE, make your stated primary track match the faculty you mention. In civil engineering, use the statement to say whether you need funding. Keep it to about two pages; none of the departments I checked set a length, but committees read many files.

Your letters should come from people who supervised your research or taught you advanced courses. Our recommendation letter guide shows what a strong academic letter contains.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  1. Missing the fee step: the fee is paid in MyStatus a few days after you submit, and nothing uploads until it clears.
  2. Sending the GRE to ECE and expecting it to help: ECE does not consider it.
  3. Skipping the GRE in aerospace or ORIE: both still require it.
  4. Assuming the English exemption: it applies only to countries where English is the sole official language.
  5. Using the Institutional TOEFL or IELTS General Training: neither is accepted.
  6. Converting your CGPA: UT looks at upper-level coursework; report your grades on your university’s scale and let the Graduate School evaluate them.
  7. Applying for spring and expecting funding: mechanical engineering reserves its limited spring money for doctoral students.

Costs funding does not cover

  • The $90 application fee per programme.
  • Visa, SEVIS and flight costs.
  • Housing deposits and Austin rent.
  • Fees not covered by your tuition benefit; ask the department which charges you pay.
  • Summer costs if your appointment covers only the long semesters.

Who should apply to UT Austin Cockrell

Apply if you want a top-ten engineering PhD with full support in ECE or a well-funded research group elsewhere, or if you plan to pay for an MSE yourself and want lower tuition than most peers. Cockrell suits applicants with strong upper-level grades who would rather not depend on a GRE score. I would think carefully if your bachelor’s is from outside engineering and the physical sciences, because mechanical and aerospace both expect that background.
