Columbia University admission requirements for international students are the same as for US applicants, plus an English test unless you qualify for an exemption. You apply to Columbia College or Columbia Engineering through the Common App or the Coalition Application on Scoir, answer Columbia’s own questions, and send two teacher recommendations, a school report and your transcript. Columbia is test-optional for 2026-27, so the SAT and ACT are your choice.
For international students, aid is the deciding factor. Columbia is need-aware for international applicants, so asking for aid is one of the factors in the decision. If you are admitted, Columbia meets 100% of your demonstrated need and does not use loans to do it. Columbia admitted 3.85% of applicants to the Class of 2028, one of the lowest rates in the US. For fall 2027 entry, Early Decision closes on 1 November 2026 and Regular Decision on 1 January 2027. I checked the details below on Columbia’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
Columbia ranking and headline numbers
In the U.S. News 2027 Best Colleges edition, released on 22 September 2026, Columbia is tied at No. 12 among National Universities with Dartmouth.
| Item | Figure |
|---|---|
| U.S. News rank | #12 (tie) National Universities, U.S. News 2027 edition |
| Acceptance rate | 3.85% (Class of 2028); about 3.9% in the 2024-25 Common Data Set |
| Cost of attendance 2026-27 | $99,774 (first year, on campus) |
| Aid for internationals | Need-aware, meets 100% of demonstrated need, no loans |
| Testing | Test-optional |
| English minimums | TOEFL 105, IELTS 7.5, Duolingo 135 |
Columbia acceptance rate and class profile
Columbia admitted 2,319 students to the Class of 2028, an acceptance rate of 3.85% from roughly 60,000 applicants, according to the Columbia Daily Spectator. A published summary of Columbia’s 2024-25 Common Data Set gives the same picture: more than 60,000 applicants, about 2,325 admits, about 1,483 enrolled first-years and an acceptance rate of about 3.9%. Columbia does not publish a separate rate for international applicants on the pages I could read.
The middle 50% of enrolled first-years scored 1510 to 1560 on the SAT and 34 to 36 on the ACT. Those are the scores of students who chose to submit, since Columbia is test-optional.
Columbia tuition for international students in 2026-27
Columbia charges international students the same tuition as US students. This is the official 2026-27 cost of attendance for a first-year student living on campus at Columbia College or Columbia Engineering:
| Cost item (2026-27) | First year, on campus |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $72,800 |
| Fees (includes one-time $730 transcript and orientation charge) | $4,160 |
| Housing | $12,522 |
| Food | $7,128 |
| Books and supplies | $1,320 |
| Personal expenses | $1,844 |
| Travel | Varies by home address |
| Total | $99,774 |
International students also pay an International Services Charge of $175 a semester. Columbia Health Insurance costs $2,218 for the fall and $3,605 for spring, and you can only waive it if you have comparable coverage in New York City.
Columbia scholarships for international students: how need-based aid works
Columbia’s undergraduate aid is need-based. These are the rules for international applicants:
- Columbia is need-aware in admitting international students. Your aid status is one of many factors in the decision.
- Columbia meets 100% of demonstrated need for international students admitted as first-years or transfers working on a first degree.
- Columbia College and Columbia Engineering do not use loans to meet need.
- You must say on your application that you are applying for aid. If you do not, you cannot apply later unless your citizenship status changes.
- Low-income international students can email ugrad-finaid@columbia.edu to ask about a CSS Profile fee waiver.
Columbia awards more than $225 million a year in grants. About half of students receive Columbia grants, averaging $70,797. Families with typical assets and calculated incomes under $66,000 are expected to pay nothing, and incomes up to $150,000 can mean tuition-free attendance. Columbia’s pages describe these income bands generally, so use Columbia’s aid estimate and your own aid letter to see how they apply to a family abroad. For a similar Ivy League model, see our Yale scholarships guide.
Aid forms and deadlines
- CSS Profile: required for Columbia aid. Columbia’s CSS code is 2116.
2. Tax documents through IDOC: your parents’ tax returns or income records, uploaded to the College Board’s IDOC service.
3. Business or farm returns: only if they apply to your family.
| Aid deadline | Date |
|---|---|
| Early Decision | 15 November 2026 |
| Regular Decision | 15 February 2027 |
(based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens)
Columbia admission requirements for international students: the application parts
- Application: Common App or Coalition Application on Scoir. QuestBridge Finalists can apply through QuestBridge.
2. Choice of school: Columbia College or Columbia Engineering (the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science).
3. Columbia questions: Columbia’s own short answers and lists, completed in the application.
4. Recommendations: two teacher letters from academic subjects. Engineering applicants need one from a maths or science teacher.
5. School report and transcript: from your counselor, with predicted or final results.
6. Tests: optional for 2026-27. You can self-report scores; official scores are needed only if you enrol and want them considered.
7. English test: required unless you are exempt.
8. Fee: Columbia’s application page lists the fee and waiver options; check them in your application before you submit.
English requirements
You need an English proficiency score unless English is your home language, English was your main language of instruction for all of secondary school, or you scored at least 700 on SAT Reading and Writing or at least 29 on ACT English or Reading.
| Test | Minimum score |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 105 (code 2116; no MyBest scores) |
| IELTS | 7.5 |
| Duolingo English Test | 135 |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency | 191 |
These are true minimums, and they are higher than Penn’s competitive bands. If English is a weak spot, the SAT and ACT exemptions are worth knowing about: a strong SAT Reading and Writing score can remove the need for a separate English test.

How to write the Columbia essays, with a sample opening
Columbia’s questions are short, so precision matters more than style. In recent cycles they have included a list of books or media you have enjoyed, a question about how you work with people whose views differ from yours, and short answers on why Columbia and why your chosen field. Confirm the exact 2026-27 wording in your application.
- Lists: be honest and varied. A mix of school texts, books in your own language and a podcast says more than a list of classics.
- Why Columbia: connect your goals to the Core Curriculum and to New York City itself. Name what you would use.
- Why your field: show the path that brought you there, with one concrete example.
- Engineering applicants: show what you have built or tested, even if it was small.
Sample opening, for illustration only:
“The first time I read Achebe in the original English, then again in my grandfather’s Igbo retelling, I realised a story could live in two homes. The Core would let me keep reading that way.”
What happens after you apply
- Portal: Columbia confirms your application and lists missing items in its applicant portal.
2. Aid file: submit the CSS Profile and IDOC documents by your round’s deadline so your aid decision can come with your admission.
3. Decision: ED results in December, RD results in the spring. Columbia posts exact release dates on its admissions site.
4. Reply: ED admits withdraw other applications; RD admits reply by 1 May.
5. Enrolment and visa: send final documents and official scores if you used them, then receive your I-20 and apply for the F-1 visa.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Not ticking the aid box on the application. Columbia will not consider you for aid later.
- Sending an English score below 105 TOEFL, 7.5 IELTS or 135 Duolingo. These are minimums, not targets.
- Forgetting that the Engineering application needs a maths or science teacher letter.
- Writing a “why Columbia” answer about the city’s skyline instead of the Core and specific programmes.
- Treating test-optional as a reason not to sit the SAT when a strong score could also exempt you from the English test.
- Leaving the RD submission to 1 January, a public holiday when school offices are closed.
Costs that aid doesn’t cover
- Visa and SEVIS fees and your first flight to New York.
- New York City living costs during breaks if you stay on.
- Test fees for the SAT, ACT or English tests, and score sending.
- The CSS Profile fee, unless Columbia approves a waiver.
- Personal costs above the $1,844 allowance. New York is expensive.
Columbia graduate admissions for international students
Each graduate school at Columbia admits its own students: the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Columbia Engineering’s graduate programmes, the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia Business School, the Mailman School of Public Health and others. Each sets its own deadlines, English test minimums and funding. The School of General Studies is a separate undergraduate route for students with non-traditional backgrounds, and it has its own application.
Majors and campus life at Columbia
Columbia’s main campus is in Morningside Heights in upper Manhattan, with the subway close by. Columbia College students take the Core Curriculum, a shared set of courses in literature, philosophy, art, music and science, before and alongside their majors. Columbia Engineering students follow an engineering curriculum with Core elements. Barnard College sits across the street and shares classes with Columbia, which widens the course choice. Living in New York gives you internships, research and cultural life on your doorstep, and a higher cost of living.

Who should apply to Columbia
Columbia suits students who want a big-city university, enjoy reading and discussion (the Core is a real commitment), and have strong English. It is a good fit for future economists, engineers, journalists, policy students and anyone who wants internships in New York during term time.
Think twice if you want a quiet campus, if your English scores sit below Columbia’s minimums, or if you need a need-blind reading. Because Columbia is need-aware for international applicants, include need-blind and full-need schools in your list too.
