MOUAU Soil Science and Meteorology Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028: Requirements, Subject Combination and Screening

MOUAU’s minimum for Soil Science and Meteorology is 150 in the UTME with MOUAU first choice. See the JAMB subjects, MOUAU’s O’level and Physics rules, the course name JAMB uses, screening, a safe target score and CAPS steps for 2027/2028.

The MOUAU cut off mark for Soil Science and Meteorology is 150 in the UTME, with Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) chosen first. MOUAU’s 2026/2027 screening notice gave that one figure for all its courses, and it published no separate cut-off for Soil Science and Meteorology.

2027/2028 update: MOUAU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Meeting 150 lets you take part in screening, where MOUAU ranks you on your UTME score together with your O’level grades and number of sittings. This guide covers the official numbers, a safe target score, the JAMB subjects and MOUAU’s own O’level remarks, the name mix-up between this department and the JAMB brochure, screening, a worked example and the CAPS steps.

What score should you aim for? (my advice)

Because MOUAU publishes no departmental cut-off, the bands below are my own reading as an admissions adviser. Treat them as planning targets, not rules.

UTME scoreChances for Soil Science and Meteorology at MOUAU
Under 150Not eligible
150 to 169Can register; needs strong O’level grades from one sitting
170 to 189Fair to good, depending on O’level
190 and aboveStrong for this department

Soil science is not one of the courses candidates queue for, which works in your favour. I would still set 180 as your 2027 UTME target, because MOUAU’s screening rewards the whole package and a few extra marks protect you if your O’level grades are ordinary.

MOUAU is federal, so admissions follow the federal guideline of merit, catchment and educationally less developed states. MOUAU has not published its catchment states or the split it uses, so plan on merit.

UTME subjects and O’level for MOUAU Soil Science and Meteorology

The department’s name at MOUAU is Soil Science and Meteorology, but you will not find that exact name in the JAMB brochure. Two brochure entries, as reprinted by Myschool, are relevant. The Soil Science entry carries a MOUAU remark on O’level and Direct Entry. The Agriculture entry lists MOUAU with final-year options, one of which is “Soil Science & Agro-Climatology”, which looks like an older name for the same area. Both entries give the same UTME subjects.

RequirementSoil Science and Meteorology at MOUAU
UTME subjectsUse of English, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science, and Mathematics or Physics
O’level (MOUAU remark)Five credits at not more than two sittings: English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science, and another science subject
Agricultural ScienceMust be backed by at least a pass in Biology
PhysicsMOUAU’s Agriculture remark asks for at least an O’level pass in Physics
Results acceptedWAEC, NECO or NABTEB
Awaiting resultsWait until your result is out before registering for MOUAU screening

The Soil Science entry’s MOUAU remark does not mention Physics, while the Agriculture entry does. I would not gamble on that difference. Get at least a pass in Physics, and better still a credit, because the meteorology half of this course is built on physics: radiation, heat, air pressure and the instruments that measure them.

For the UTME I would choose English, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. Mathematics is allowed in place of Physics, but candidates who sat Physics in the UTME tend to find the climate courses easier.

Which course name to pick on JAMB

At the CBT centre, ask to see every course JAMB lists for MOUAU and look for the soil option. If the only match is Agriculture, the brochure says MOUAU assigns options at the final year. Confirm with MOUAU’s admissions office which name leads to Soil Science and Meteorology before you submit, since fixing a wrong course later means a JAMB change of course.

Direct Entry

The general Soil Science entry asks for two A-level passes in Chemistry and one of Zoology, Botany, Agricultural Science, Biology, Geography, Mathematics, Physics, Geology, Economics or Health Science. MOUAU’s own remark is narrower: A-level passes in Chemistry and Biology, Botany, Zoology or Agricultural Science. MOUAU takes ND holders with distinction or credit and HND holders with credit into 200 level, and ND lower credit holders or NCE double major holders with credit or merit in Agriculture into 100 level.

How MOUAU screens Soil Science and Meteorology candidates

These details come from MOUAU’s 2026/2027 notice, signed by the Registrar, Dr (Mrs) Nkeiruka Charity Mbanasor, as reprinted by Myschool on 20 June 2026. I was not able to open the copy on mouau.edu.ng.

Worked example (illustrative only)

MOUAU has not released an aggregate formula. To show what “O’level weighted” can mean in practice, I use a common Nigerian method: UTME ÷ 8 (up to 50) plus O’level points for five subjects (A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5; up to 50). It is my illustration and may not match MOUAU’s calculation.

  1. Somtochukwu, 184, one sitting: B2 English, B3 Mathematics, B3 Chemistry, B2 Biology, C4 Physics. UTME points 184 ÷ 8 = 23. O’level points 9 + 8 + 8 + 9 + 7 = 41. Total 64.
  2. Nnamdi, 160, one sitting: A1 English, B2 Mathematics, A1 Chemistry, B2 Agricultural Science, B3 Physics, with C5 in Biology. UTME points 160 ÷ 8 = 20. O’level points 10 + 9 + 10 + 9 + 8 = 46. Total 66.
  3. Reading it: Nnamdi scored 24 marks less in the UTME but finishes 2 points ahead on this method, because his grades are higher. His Agricultural Science credit counts because he also has a Biology result.

Under any method that counts O’level grades, good WAEC or NECO results can carry a modest UTME score a long way.

Step-by-step: applying to MOUAU for Soil Science and Meteorology

  1. Profile code: send NIN followed by a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019, using the line registered with your NIN.
  2. UTME registration: choose MOUAU first and the course that leads to the soil option, with English, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science, and Physics or Mathematics.
  3. Change of institution if needed: if another school is first, switch with a JAMB change of institution before MOUAU screening opens.
  4. O’level upload: at an accredited JAMB CBT centre, upload your result so it shows on CAPS. Use one sitting if you can.
  5. MOUAU portal: register on portal.mouau.edu.ng and pay the screening fee (₦2,000 in 2026/2027) through Remita.
  6. Follow up: check the portal for your screening result and admission status.
  7. Accept on CAPS: at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept within JAMB’s four-week window. Our JAMB CAPS guide covers each status.
  8. Acceptance fee: MOUAU’s acceptance and school fees were not in any source I could reach. Pay the amount shown on your portal invoice and nothing outside it.

Warning

Every genuine MOUAU offer appears on JAMB CAPS. JAMB stated in May 2026 that admissions outside CAPS are illegal, so do not pay anyone who promises a place or a quick department transfer.

Studying Soil Science and Meteorology at MOUAU

The department belongs to MOUAU’s College of Crop and Soil Sciences, with Agronomy, Plant Health Management, and Water Resources Management and Agrometeorology as neighbours. MOUAU, created by federal decree in November 1992, sits at Umudike, about 10 km from Umuahia in Abia State.

The course joins two subjects that farmers depend on: what is in the soil, and what the weather does to it. A useful detail for applicants: ThisDay reported in June 2021 that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had built a weather station at MOUAU under an agreement with the university, and had agreed to help train staff and equip the meteorological laboratory. That gives meteorology students working instruments on campus.

What you will study

  • Shared agriculture years: crop and animal production, introductory soils, agricultural economics, chemistry, biology and general studies.
  • Soil science core: soil formation and classification, soil chemistry and physics, soil fertility, fertilisers and soil microbiology.
  • Land management: soil survey and land evaluation, erosion control and soil conservation, which matter in the gully-prone South East.
  • Meteorology: weather elements, climate and crop growth, weather instruments and data, and agricultural weather forecasting.

These are the standard areas for this kind of programme in Nigeria. MOUAU’s departmental handbook gives the actual course codes, and agriculture students usually spend a practical year on farms or in attachment.

Degree title, duration and accreditation

The department is on MOUAU’s official list. Since the JAMB brochure presents the soil option under MOUAU’s Agriculture degree, the award may be a B.Agric; no official source I reached states the title. Nigerian agriculture degrees usually run five years. I did not find an NUC accreditation result for this programme, so I make no claim about it; ask MOUAU before you accept an offer.

Careers

  • Soil testing and fertiliser recommendation with fertiliser blenders and agro-input firms.
  • Soil survey and land evaluation for farms, estates and government land projects.
  • Weather and climate data work for agricultural planning.
  • Erosion control and environmental assessment projects.
  • Research posts in agricultural research institutes and universities, usually after a master’s degree.

For revision, our JAMB Chemistry syllabus and JAMB Biology syllabus list the topics JAMB tests. To plan the 2027 exam, see when JAMB 2027 registration starts.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Looking for “Soil Science and Meteorology” on JAMB: the brochure uses Soil Science and Agriculture (with the Soil Science & Agro-Climatology option) instead.
  • Skipping Physics at O’level: MOUAU’s Agriculture remark asks for at least a pass.
  • Agricultural Science with no Biology result: MOUAU will not accept it alone.
  • Using three sittings: MOUAU allows two at most and weights the number of sittings.
  • Not checking CAPS: the four-week acceptance window passes quickly.

MOUAU Soil Science and Meteorology cut off mark: FAQs

What is the cut off mark for Soil Science in MOUAU? 150 in the UTME with MOUAU as first choice, the minimum MOUAU set for all courses in 2026/2027. No higher departmental figure was published.

Can I study Soil Science at MOUAU without Physics? In the UTME you can take Mathematics instead of Physics. At O’level, MOUAU’s Agriculture remark asks for at least a pass in Physics, so do not leave it out.

Is Soil Science and Meteorology the same as Soil Science and Agro-Climatology at MOUAU? The JAMB brochure lists MOUAU’s soil option as Soil Science & Agro-Climatology, while MOUAU’s current department list says Soil Science and Meteorology. They appear to be the same area under an older and a newer name, but confirm with MOUAU.

Does MOUAU accept two sittings for Soil Science? Yes, up to two sittings. MOUAU weights the number of sittings in screening, so one sitting is better.
