ABSU Political Science Education Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 and Admission Requirements

ABSU’s minimum for Political Science Education is 150 in the UTME. See the two JAMB course names, the subjects, ABSU’s Mathematics pass rule, Direct Entry and the NUC status.

The ABSU Political Science Education cut off mark is 150 in the UTME. Abia State University (ABSU) set that minimum for every regular degree course in its 2026/2027 screening notice, for candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice. ABSU did not publish a separate figure for Political Science Education.

2027/2028 update: ABSU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Two things make this course different from most at ABSU. First, ABSU’s JAMB list carries it twice, as Education and Political Science and as Education and Government, with the same requirements. Second, ABSU’s own remark in the JAMB brochure accepts an O’level pass in Mathematics instead of a credit. Below I explain both, with a safe target, screening steps and the course’s full NUC accreditation.

ABSU published one minimum for all courses. A Political Science Education cut-off on a blog is not an ABSU figure. The real cut-off each year is the last admitted candidate’s score, and ABSU does not release it.

Safe target score for Political Science Education at ABSU (my advice)

Political Science Education draws more applicants than the science education courses, partly because arts and social science candidates have fewer course options, and partly because candidates who miss Political Science or Law often land here. The table is my advice, not an ABSU rule.

Your UTME scoreMy read for ABSU Political Science Education
Below 150Not eligible for screening
150 to 164Eligible; your O’level grades decide most of it
165 to 184A reasonable chance with clean credits
185 and aboveStrong

I would aim for at least 170, with a good grade in Government. If you are using Political Science Education as a second option after B.Sc Political Science, that score also keeps you competitive for the first course.

JAMB subject combination and O’level for Political Science Education at ABSU

RequirementWhat the JAMB brochure says
Course name on JAMBEducation and Political Science (also Education and Government)
UTME (general line)Government or History plus two other Arts or Social Science subjects
UTME (ABSU remark)None
O’level (general line)Five credits including English Language, Government/History and three other subjects
O’level (ABSU remark)ABSU requires five credits including English Language, Government or History and any three subjects, and an O’level pass in Mathematics
Direct Entry (general line)Two A-level passes chosen from Government or History, Economics and Geography/Physics; or NCE merit in Government/History, Economics and Geography/Physics
Direct Entry (ABSU remark)ABSU accepts an O’level pass in Mathematics

For the UTME I would write Use of English, Government, Economics and Literature in English (or CRS, History or Geography in place of one). Government is the anchor. Economics keeps Political Science, Social Studies Education and Educational Management within reach if you change course.

The Mathematics pass

The general O’level line does not name Mathematics at all, while ABSU’s remark adds it as a pass, not a credit. So a candidate with a D7 or E8 in Mathematics can still meet ABSU’s rule for this course, as long as the five credits include English and Government or History. I would still try for a Mathematics credit if you can resit: most other degree courses, including B.Sc Political Science, ask for it, and without it a change of course later becomes harder.

Which JAMB course name to pick

ABSU’s JAMB list has both Education and Political Science and Education and Government. The two brochure entries carry the same UTME, O’level and Direct Entry lines and the same ABSU remarks. NUC’s accreditation record names the ABSU course “Education Government”. I could not find an ABSU page saying which JAMB entry it admits into, so ask the ABSU admissions office or the Faculty of Education which one to pick before you register, and keep a screenshot of the answer.

Direct Entry

You need two A-level passes from Government or History, Economics and Geography or Physics, or an NCE with merit in Government or History paired with Economics, Geography or Physics. ABSU’s remark accepts an O’level pass in Mathematics for Direct Entry too. ABSU is not on the “No Direct Entry” remark for this course (that remark names IMSU). Confirm the entry level with ABSU before you buy the form.

NUC accreditation for ABSU Political Science Education

NUC’s publication of accreditation results from 1990 to 2025 (uploaded in September 2026) has no line called Political Science Education for ABSU. The matching line is Education Government: Full, 2030, meaning full accreditation with the next visit due in 2030. That is a sound position: full accreditation lasts five years.

The same record lists ABSU’s B.Sc Political Science as full with 2029 as its next date. Some of ABSU’s science education courses (Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Biology Education, and Integrated Science) show denied as their latest result, so if you compare teaching courses at ABSU, check each one separately.

How ABSU screens Political Science Education applicants

The Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, signed ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice. I could not open the original on the ABSU website, so the details below come from two reprints that agree with each other: Osilight (posted 9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026). The notice covers every regular degree course, education courses included.

DetailWhat the 2026/2027 notice said
Who could applyCandidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice, or who changed to ABSU, and scored 150 or more in the UTME
Direct EntryBasic five O’level credit passes under ABSU’s entry requirements
Where to registerOnline at www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng
What to uploadUTME result, O’level result and degree certificate where applicable, on the ABSU portal (www.portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng) and the JAMB portal
Fee₦2,000 by e-payment through the banks named in the notice, or by debit card
Missing the screeningCandidates who do not register “will not be considered for admission”
Written testNot mentioned; the notice describes online document screening
Closing dateNot stated in the reprints

The bank names came out garbled in the reprint, so pay through the options shown on the ABSU portal itself. Since the notice mentions no written test, ABSU ranks you on what it can see: your UTME score and your O’level grades.

Worked example for Political Science Education candidates

ABSU has not published an aggregate formula. To show how O’level grades can move you up or down, I use an illustrative method common at Nigerian universities: UTME score divided by 8 (up to 50 points) plus O’level points for five relevant subjects, where A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5 (up to 50 points). This is my example, not ABSU’s formula.

  1. Chidera scored 172 with B2 in English, A1 in Government, B3 in Economics, B3 in Literature in English and B3 in CRS. UTME points: 172 ÷ 8 = 21.5. O’level points: 9 + 10 + 8 + 8 + 8 = 43. Illustrative total: 64.5.
  2. Somto scored 190 with C6 in English, C5 in Government, C6 in Economics, C6 in Literature in English and C6 in Civic Education. UTME points: 190 ÷ 8 = 23.75. O’level points: 5 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 26. Illustrative total: 49.75.
  3. The result: Chidera leads by about 15 points with 18 fewer UTME marks. Under this kind of method, grades in Government and English carry as much weight as the UTME score.

How to apply for Political Science Education at ABSU, step by step

  1. Get a JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the SIM linked to that NIN. The code arrives by SMS.
  2. Register the UTME with the right course name: pick Education and Political Science at Abia State University, with Use of English, Government, Economics and Literature in English. ABSU screened first and second choice candidates in 2026/2027, but first choice is still the cleaner position. To move ABSU up later, use a JAMB change of institution.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do this at an accredited JAMB CBT centre once your result is out. Make sure English, Government or History and your Mathematics result (pass or credit) are on the upload.
  4. Register for ABSU screening: when the notice is out, go to www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng, pay the screening fee (₦2,000 in 2026/2027) and upload your UTME result and O’level on the ABSU portal.
  5. Keep your receipts: save the payment receipt and a printout of the completed screening form for clearance.
  6. Check your status: watch the ABSU portal and your JAMB CAPS page. ABSU offers show on CAPS first.
  7. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. JAMB gives four weeks. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  8. Pay acceptance and clear: ABSU’s acceptance and school fees were not in any source I reached. Pay only the amount on your ABSU portal invoice.

Warning

Every genuine ABSU offer appears on JAMB CAPS, and JAMB said in May 2026 that admission outside CAPS is illegal. Anyone who asks for money to “process” a Political Science Education place is not acting for ABSU. Pay only through the ABSU portal.

JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for public universities such as ABSU (News Agency of Nigeria, 11 May 2026) and kept that date when it restored CAPS in September (Nairametrics, 28 September 2026). JAMB also said in May 2026 that any admission done outside CAPS is illegal, so your CAPS page is the record that counts.

Political Science Education at ABSU: the programme

Political Science Education is in ABSU’s College of Education on the Uturu main campus, Isuikwuato LGA. ABSU began in 1981 as Imo State University and was renamed after Abia State was created in 1991. The course trains teachers of Government and Civic Education, so you study political science alongside education courses.

What you study

ABSU has not published a course outline that I could reach. A Political Science Education degree in Nigeria usually covers:

  • Political theory, Nigerian government and politics, comparative politics and public administration.
  • International relations and African politics.
  • Education foundations: psychology of learning, philosophy and sociology of education.
  • Methods of teaching Government and Civic Education, with assessment.
  • Teaching practice in a secondary school and a final-year project.

Degree, duration and teaching practice

Arts and social science education degrees in Nigeria are awarded as B.A (Ed), B.Sc (Ed) or B.Ed depending on the university, and run four years for UTME entrants, with Direct Entry students normally starting at 200 level. I could not reach an ABSU page that confirms which title ABSU uses or the duration. Teachers also register with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria.

Careers

  • Government and Civic Education teacher in secondary schools.
  • Administrative officer roles in ministries, local government and schools.
  • Electoral, civic and voter education work with agencies and NGOs.
  • Research and policy roles, with further study.
  • Postgraduate study in political science, public administration or education.

If you are writing in 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts, and when results are out, see how to check your JAMB result. If your score or subjects do not fit, our JAMB change of course guide shows how to switch before admission closes.

Mistakes that cost Political Science Education applicants an ABSU place

  • Picking “Political Science” when you want to teach: the teaching course is a separate JAMB entry.
  • Not asking which of the two JAMB names ABSU uses: confirm before you register.
  • No Government or History credit: both the general line and ABSU’s remark name it.
  • Stopping at 150: that score only makes you eligible for screening.
  • Not registering for screening: the notice says such candidates will not be considered.
  • Missing the CAPS window: JAMB gives four weeks to accept.

ABSU Political Science Education: frequently asked questions

Do I need a credit in Mathematics for Political Science Education in ABSU? No. ABSU’s remark in the JAMB brochure asks for five credits including English and Government or History, plus only an O’level pass in Mathematics.

What is the JAMB subject combination for Political Science Education at ABSU? Use of English, Government or History, and two other Arts or Social Science subjects, such as Economics and Literature in English.

Is Political Science Education in ABSU accredited? Yes. NUC’s 1990 to 2025 results list ABSU’s Education Government with full accreditation and 2030 as the next date.

Is 160 enough for Political Science Education in ABSU? 160 is above the 150 minimum, so you can be screened, but this course is more competitive than the science education courses. I would aim for 170 or more.

Sources and updates

The 150 minimum, the first and second choice rule, the Direct Entry line, the ₦2,000 fee, the registration and upload steps and the warning about candidates who fail to register come from ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, as reprinted by Osilight (9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026); I could not open the original on the ABSU website. The national minimum of 150, the 31 October 2026 deadline for public universities, the four-week CAPS window and the warning on admissions outside CAPS come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026), and the confirmation that the deadline stands from Nairametrics (28 September 2026). The JAMB course name comes from ABSU’s JAMB course list on Myschool, and the UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Education and Political Science. The same requirements appear in the brochure entry for Education and Government. The accreditation history comes from NUC’s accreditation results, 1990 to 2025 publication. Campus and history details come from Wikipedia. The safe target table and the worked example are my own advice and illustration. ABSU’s fees, the exact degree title and the duration were not published in any source I reached. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if ABSU publishes a departmental cut-off, new requirements or a new accreditation result.
