The ABSU cut off mark for Business Education is 150 in the UTME. Abia State University (ABSU) used 150 as the minimum for every regular degree course in its 2026/2027 screening notice, for candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice. There is no separate Business Education figure. A score of 150 gets you screened, and admission then goes by merit among the applicants for the course.
2027/2028 update: ABSU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Business Education is one of the ABSU education courses with a clean NUC record, and its JAMB rules hold one surprise: Commerce and Accounting are not among the UTME subjects the brochure lists. This guide covers the official figures, a safe target score, the exact subjects, Direct Entry for NCE and ND holders, the screening steps and the careers the degree leads to.

ABSU Business Education cut-off mark history
| Session | Figure | What it means | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | Lowest UTME score ABSU accepted for online screening in any regular degree course (ABSU as first or second choice) | ABSU notice, reprinted 8 to 9 June 2026 |
| 2026 (national) | 150 | JAMB minimum for every Nigerian university | JAMB 2026 policy meeting, 11 May 2026 |
| 2025/2026 | Not confirmed | I could not open an ABSU notice for that session | Unverified |
| Business Education figure | None published | Blog “departmental cut-off” figures cite no ABSU document | Unofficial |
If a website shows an official ABSU cut-off for Business Education alone, it is quoting a figure ABSU never released. The effective cut-off is the score of the last candidate admitted into the course each year, and ABSU does not publish it.
One point confuses many education candidates in 2026. JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting exempted NCE programmes at colleges of education from the UTME. That rule is about the three-year NCE certificate. ABSU’s education courses are university degree programmes, and the 2026/2027 screening notice applied the same 150 UTME minimum to every regular degree course, so you still need to sit the UTME to enter at 100 level.
Safe target score for Business Education at ABSU (my advice)
Business Education usually attracts fewer applicants than Accountancy or Business Administration, which in my experience keeps its effective cut-off closer to the minimum. This table is my own reading, not an ABSU rule.
| Your UTME score | My read for ABSU Business Education |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible for screening |
| 150 to 159 | Eligible; good credits in English, Mathematics and Economics will matter |
| 160 to 169 | A fair chance |
| 170 to 189 | Good |
| 190 and above | Strong |
I would aim for 170 or more. If you scored well above that and really want to work in accounting, Accountancy at ABSU may also be within reach, and both courses use Mathematics and Economics in the UTME.
JAMB subject combination and O’level for Business Education at ABSU
| Requirement | What the JAMB brochure says |
|---|---|
| Course name on JAMB | Business Education (Faculty of Education) |
| UTME | Use of English, Mathematics, Economics, plus one of Literature in English, History, Government, Geography, Chemistry and Physics |
| O’level | Five TC II merit, O’level or NTC/NBC credit passes including English Language, Mathematics, Economics and two other Social Science or Arts subjects |
| NBC holders | The other subjects can come from Commerce, Office Practice, Principles of Accounts, Secretarial Duties, Typewriting and Shorthand |
| Direct Entry | Two A-level passes or NCE merit in two relevant subjects; or NCE merit in Business Education (Double Major) |
| ABSU remark (Direct Entry) | ABSU accepts an ND credit (remark shared with UNIBEN; see below) |
| ABSU remarks (UTME and O’level) | None |
Commerce is not on the UTME list
Many candidates assume a business course takes Commerce or Accounting in JAMB. For Business Education, the brochure’s fourth-subject list is Literature in English, History, Government, Geography, Chemistry and Physics, with no ABSU remark that adds Commerce or Accounting. So my recommended combination is Use of English, Mathematics, Economics and Government. Geography is also fine. Do not use Commerce or Financial Accounting as your fourth UTME subject for this course.
O’level
You need five credits including English Language, Mathematics and Economics. The other two should be Social Science or Arts subjects: Commerce, Financial Accounting, Government, Geography, Literature in English and Civic Education are the usual ones. Candidates with NABTEB business certificates (NBC) can count Office Practice, Principles of Accounts, Secretarial Duties, Typewriting and Shorthand, which suits students from technical and commercial schools.
Direct Entry: NCE and ND holders
The general Direct Entry line accepts two A-level passes or an NCE merit in two relevant subjects, or an NCE merit in Business Education (Double Major). ABSU has a remark of its own, shared with UNIBEN. It reads, in part, “ABSU and UNIBEN accepts ND credit in Mathematics”. The wording is awkward, but the plain reading is that ABSU will consider ND holders with a credit-level result for Direct Entry into Business Education. Ask the admissions office what ND grade and course they accept, and which level you would enter, before you buy a Direct Entry form. The 2026/2027 notice also requires the basic five O’level credits from Direct Entry candidates.
How ABSU screens Business Education applicants
ABSU’s 2026/2027 notice was signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu. I could not open the original on the ABSU website, so the details below come from two reprints that agree with each other: Osilight (posted 9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026).
| Detail | What the 2026/2027 notice said |
|---|---|
| Who could apply | Candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice, or who changed to ABSU, and scored 150 or more in the UTME |
| Direct Entry | Basic five O’level credit passes under ABSU’s entry requirements |
| Where to register | Online at www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng |
| What to upload | UTME result, O’level result and degree certificate where applicable, on the ABSU portal (www.portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng) and the JAMB portal |
| Fee | ₦2,000 by e-payment through the banks named in the notice, or by debit card |
| Missing the screening | Candidates who do not register “will not be considered for admission” |
| Written test | Not mentioned; the notice describes online document screening |
| Closing date | Not stated in the reprints |
The bank names came out garbled in the reprint, so follow the payment options on the ABSU portal itself. Because the notice describes no written test, your UTME score and your O’level grades are what ABSU has in front of it when it ranks Business Education applicants. Economics and Mathematics are the two O’level grades I would protect most.
Worked example for Business Education candidates
ABSU has not published an aggregate formula, and the 2026/2027 notice describes document screening without a test. To show how your O’level can change your position, I use an illustrative method common at Nigerian universities: UTME score divided by 8 (up to 50 points) plus O’level points for five relevant subjects, where A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5 (up to 50 points). This is my example, not ABSU’s formula.
- Ngozi scored 158 with B2 in English, B3 in Mathematics, A1 in Economics, B3 in Commerce and B3 in Government. UTME points: 158 ÷ 8 = 19.75. O’level points: 9 + 8 + 10 + 8 + 8 = 43. Illustrative total: 62.75.
- Ifeanyi scored 176 with C6 in English, C6 in Mathematics, C5 in Economics, C6 in Commerce and C6 in Government. UTME points: 176 ÷ 8 = 22. O’level points: 5 + 5 + 6 + 5 + 5 = 26. Illustrative total: 48.
- The result: Ngozi leads by 14.75 points with 18 fewer UTME marks. If you already have good O’level grades, 150 to 160 is not as weak a position as it looks.
How to apply for Business Education at ABSU, step by step
- Get a JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the SIM linked to that NIN. The code arrives by SMS and you take it to a CBT centre to register.
- Register the UTME with the right subjects: pick Business Education at Abia State University with Use of English, Mathematics, Economics and Government (or another subject on the brochure list). ABSU screened first and second choice candidates in 2026/2027, but first choice is still the cleaner position. To move ABSU up later, use a JAMB change of institution.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at an accredited JAMB CBT centre once your result is out. Check that the upload shows English, Mathematics and Economics.
- Register for ABSU screening: when the notice is out, go to www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng, pay the screening fee (₦2,000 in 2026/2027) and upload your UTME result and O’level on the ABSU portal.
- Keep your receipts: save the payment receipt and a printout of the completed screening form. You may need both at clearance.
- Check your status: watch the ABSU portal and your JAMB CAPS page. An ABSU offer shows on CAPS first.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. JAMB gives four weeks. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and clear: ABSU’s acceptance and school fees were not in any source I reached. Pay only the amount on your ABSU portal invoice.
Warning
Every genuine ABSU offer appears on JAMB CAPS, and JAMB said in May 2026 that admission outside CAPS is illegal. Anyone who asks for money to “process” a Business Education place is not acting for ABSU. Pay only through the ABSU portal.
JAMB kept 31 October 2026 as the date public universities such as ABSU should finish 2026/2027 admissions (Nairametrics, 28 September 2026). If you applied this year, the window runs until then, so check CAPS rather than waiting for a printed list.
Business Education at ABSU: the programme
Business Education is run by ABSU’s College of Education on the main campus at Uturu, Isuikwuato LGA. ABSU began in 1981 as Imo State University and took its present name after Abia State was created in 1991.
What you study
ABSU has not published a course outline that I could reach. Business Education degrees in Nigeria usually let you lean towards accounting or office and secretarial studies, and the content looks like this:
- Business content: principles of accounting, cost accounting, economics, commerce, business law, marketing and entrepreneurship.
- Office technology: office practice, keyboarding and word processing, records management and business communication.
- Education courses: educational psychology, curriculum studies, methods of teaching business subjects, measurement and evaluation.
- Practical work: teaching practice in secondary schools and, at many universities, a business attachment.
- Final year: a research project in business education.
Accreditation, degree and duration
NUC’s publication of accreditation results from 1990 to 2025 lists ABSU Business Education with two full results and a maturity date of 2027. A second source agrees: a MySchoolGist report on ABSU’s 2022 accreditation results named Business Education among seven ABSU programmes that earned full accreditation in that exercise, which runs five years. That puts its next NUC visit around 2027. The degree title for this course at ABSU was not on any page I reached, and four years is the usual length for UTME entrants.
Careers
- Teacher of Business Studies, Commerce, Financial Accounting, Economics and Office Practice in secondary schools, after registration with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
- Administrative, secretarial and office management roles in banks, firms and public service.
- Accounts and records officer, and further study for professional accounting exams.
- Lecturer in colleges of education and polytechnics after a master’s degree.
- Running a small business, which the entrepreneurship content supports.

Mistakes that cost Business Education applicants an ABSU place
- Writing Commerce or Accounting in JAMB: neither is on the brochure’s list of fourth subjects for this course.
- No Economics credit: Economics is required in both the UTME and O’level.
- Assuming the NCE exemption covers university education degrees: it does not; ABSU entrants still sit the UTME.
- Buying a Direct Entry form without asking about your ND or NCE grade: confirm with the admissions office first.
- Not registering for screening: the notice says such candidates will not be considered.
- Missing the CAPS window: JAMB gives four weeks to accept.
ABSU Business Education: frequently asked questions

Does ABSU accept ND for Business Education Direct Entry? The brochure has an ABSU remark accepting an ND at credit level for this course. Confirm the exact ND course and grade with the admissions office.
Is Business Education in ABSU accredited by NUC? Yes. NUC’s published results show full accreditation with a maturity date of 2027, and a 2022 report lists it among ABSU courses that earned full accreditation.
Sources and updates
The 150 minimum, the first and second choice rule, the Direct Entry line, the ₦2,000 fee, the registration and upload steps and the warning about candidates who fail to register come from ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, as reprinted by Osilight (9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026); I could not open the original on the ABSU website. The national minimum of 150, the four-week CAPS window and the warning on admissions outside CAPS come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026), and the 31 October 2026 deadline for public universities from Nairametrics (28 September 2026). The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules come from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Business Education, which ABSU’s JAMB course list links to. The accreditation history comes from NUC’s accreditation results, 1990 to 2025 publication. The 2022 accreditation report comes from MySchoolGist (“ABSU Regains Full Accreditation for Medicine and Surgery”, undated). The note on NCE programmes comes from JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting as reported in May 2026. Campus and history details come from Wikipedia. ABSU’s fees, the degree title and duration were not published in any source I reached. The safe target table and the worked example are my own advice and illustration. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if ABSU publishes a departmental cut-off or new requirements.
