If Godfrey Okoye University admits you into Primary Education, the GOUNI Primary Education cut-off mark is 150 in the UTME, the minimum GOUNI sets for its Education programmes for 2026/2027. But Primary Education is not on JAMB’s course list for GOUNI, and JAMB’s own name for the course, Primary Education Studies, does not appear there either. That changes how you should plan.
2027/2028 update: GOUNI cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Confirm in writing first
Primary Education is listed on GOUNI’s online admission form, but JAMB has no matching course for GOUNI, so you cannot select it for GOUNI when you register. E-mail the admissions office and ask which JAMB course to register and whether your admission will be into Primary Education. Keep the reply before you pay anything.
Does GOUNI offer Primary Education?
I checked every course list GOUNI publishes, plus JAMB’s list for the university, on 30 October 2026:
| Where I looked | Is Primary Education there? |
|---|---|
| GOUNI admission form page, 2026/2027 “Available Programmes” | Yes, under Faculty of Education (plain text, no course page link) |
| JAMB’s course list for GOUNI (55 courses) | No. Neither Primary Education nor Primary Education Studies |
| GOUNI Faculty of Education page (17 February 2026) | No. It lists 11 subject teaching programmes |
| GOUNI A to Z course list | No |
| GOUNI curriculum (CCMAS) page | No curriculum among the 9 Education ones |
| GOUNI 2025/2026 fee schedule | No fee line |
| NUC-approved sandwich and part-time list | No |
| JUPEB combinations | None given |
The form page is the only GOUNI source that names it. Everything else, including the fee schedule, points the other way. GOUNI may be preparing the course, or it may run it only in another mode, but I found nothing that settles it. I am treating Primary Education at GOUNI as unconfirmed.
Why the JAMB list decides this
JAMB said in May 2026 that any admission outside CAPS is illegal. CAPS offers are tied to the courses JAMB lists for each university. With no Primary Education entry for GOUNI, the university cannot offer you that course on CAPS; at best it could admit you into another listed course and move you later. Only a written promise makes that safe.

Which JAMB course to check at GOUNI
Primary school teachers teach every subject, so no single subject degree matches. The two GOUNI entries on JAMB that come closest are below. Check each one’s subject line on JAMB’s e-brochure first, because both are stricter than Primary Education Studies’ “any three subjects”.
| JAMB course at GOUNI | Why it is close | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Education and Social Studies | Social Studies is taught at every primary level, and GOUNI lists Social Studies Education on its faculty page and fee schedule | UTME and O’level subject rules on JAMB’s brochure |
| Education and English Language and Literature | English and literacy are the base of primary teaching, and GOUNI publishes a curriculum for its English education degree | Literature requirement in the UTME and O’level |
Neither of these trains you specifically for early grades. If teaching young children is what you want, the routes in the next section are better.
Where to study Primary Education in Enugu instead
| Institution | Entry | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| UNN | 160 in the UTME to screen | Primary Education sits in the Department of Educational Foundations |
| Enugu State College of Education (Technical) | NCE: four O’level credits, no UTME score | NCE Primary Education Studies, then Direct Entry to a degree |
| Federal College of Education, Eha-Amufu | NCE: four O’level credits, no UTME score | NCE Primary Education Studies |
| Coal City University | 150 | On JAMB’s list as Primary Education Studies, but missing from CCU’s own Education page |
Our guides cover each of these: UNN Educational Foundations, ESCET Primary Education Studies, FCE Eha-Amufu Primary Education Studies and CCU Primary Education Studies.
The NCE route explained
For primary teaching, the NCE is the qualification most schools ask for, and the rules changed in 2026. JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting exempted NCE candidates from the UTME: with at least four O’level credits you register with JAMB for NCE and the college admits you through CAPS. Reports differ on timing. Nairametrics (11 May 2026) said it would start with the 2027 admission cycle, while JAMB’s June 2026 NCE registration guide and Legit (23 July 2026) show it already applied in 2026. For a 2027/2028 candidate both readings mean the same thing: no UTME for NCE.
- JAMB NCE application: ₦3,500 plus a ₦700 CBT centre charge.
- O’level verification: ₦1,500 for one sitting, ₦2,000 for two.
- Admission: the college proposes you on CAPS and the Provost recommends. Awaiting result candidates cannot be proposed until the result is uploaded.
- No degree entry at colleges: from 2026/2027 colleges of education admit no one into 100 or 200 level degree programmes, including affiliated degrees.
After the NCE, you can take a degree through JAMB’s Direct Entry. JAMB’s brochure shows some universities, including UNILORIN, accept an NCE in Primary Education for Direct Entry into Primary Education Studies.
JAMB requirements for Primary Education Studies
These are JAMB’s general lines for the university course. GOUNI is not named anywhere in the entry.
| Requirement | JAMB general line |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English and any three subjects |
| O’level | Five credits including English Language |
| Direct Entry | Two A-level passes in relevant subjects |
| Universities that also want Mathematics | UNIABUJA, IAUE and UNILORIN, among others |
| Universities that also accept NCE for Direct Entry | UNILORIN and UNIPORT, among others |
What GOUNI would add
GOUNI’s 2026/2027 form page requires credits in English and Mathematics from every applicant. So even though JAMB’s general line only names English, plan on a Mathematics credit if GOUNI is on your list.
UTME subjects that keep your options open
With “any three subjects” you have freedom, so choose for your fallback. If GOUNI tells you to register Education and Social Studies or Education and English, you will need that course’s subjects. English, Government, Economics and Literature in English covers most arts and social science education degrees, but check the brochure for the exact course.
Score targets (my advice)
| Your situation | What I would do |
|---|---|
| Below 150, or no UTME | NCE Primary Education Studies at ESCET or FCE Eha-Amufu, then Direct Entry. |
| 150 to 159 | GOUNI only with a written answer; otherwise the NCE route or another university that lists the course. |
| 160 and above | UNN becomes possible; compare it with the NCE route if early grades are your goal. |
These are my own suggestions based on published minimums.
How GOUNI screens Education applicants
GOUNI does not run a Post-UTME test for its undergraduate courses on the official form page. You fill an online form, the admissions office checks it against your UTME score and O’level, and the decision comes to your e-mail. Nothing on the page describes a written test, an interview or an aggregate score for Education.
| Detail | What GOUNI published for 2026/2027 |
|---|---|
| Where to apply | The admission form on the official GOUNI website (gouni.edu.ng) |
| Form fee | Free (only Medicine and Surgery, Nursing and Law charge ₦5,000) |
| Minimum UTME score | 150 for Education programmes |
| O’level | Five credits in the subjects the course needs, including English Language and Mathematics |
| Written test or interview | None described |
| Decision | Sent by e-mail within three working days of submitting the form |
| After an offer | Acceptance fee first, then tuition, ICT and the other charges |
| Other entry routes | Direct Entry (on JAMB’s Direct Entry form), JUPEB, transfer (CGPA 2.5 on a 4-point scale or 4.0 on a 5-point scale) and postgraduate |
| Aggregate formula | Not published |
Because the reply comes by e-mail, use an address you open every day and type it with care. A single wrong letter and the offer never reaches you.
If GOUNI confirms it admits Primary Education students, the process above applies. Keep the e-mail that names the JAMB course your offer will sit under.
Worked example (illustrative)
Amaka scored 153 in English, Government, CRS and Literature, with credits in English, Mathematics, Government, CRS, Literature and Civic Education. She wants to teach primary school.
- GOUNI: 153 is above 150, but there is no Primary Education entry for GOUNI on JAMB. She asks GOUNI by e-mail which course to register and whether she will study Primary Education.
- UNN: she is below the 160 screening floor this year.
- NCE: her credits easily meet the four-credit rule at ESCET or FCE Eha-Amufu.
- Decision: unless GOUNI replies with a clear yes, she takes NCE Primary Education Studies and plans Direct Entry to a degree later.
If GOUNI confirms the course: how to apply
- Get written confirmation of the JAMB course to register and the course on your offer.
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019.
- Register as GOUNI tells you, with Godfrey Okoye University as your institution.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS at a JAMB-accredited centre.
- Fill the free GOUNI form on gouni.edu.ng and choose Primary Education.
- Accept on CAPS at efacility.jamb.gov.ng within four weeks. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains the statuses.
- Read your admission letter before paying, and query any course name you were not told about.
Need to move your JAMB choice to GOUNI? Use a JAMB change of institution. JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for private universities, and GOUNI repeated it in its news post of 12 May 2026. That window runs until 30 November 2026. A 2027 candidate should expect a similar date for 2027/2028, but JAMB announces it each year.
What GOUNI charges for Education courses
There is no Primary Education line in GOUNI’s 2025/2026 fee schedule. Its other Education programmes show ₦631,200 as the first yearly figure under “Tuition and accommodation fees”, with a ₦30,000 acceptance fee, ₦20,000 matriculation fee and ₦60,000 ICT charge for new students. Ask the bursary for the exact figure if GOUNI confirms the course.
What Primary Education covers and where it leads
GOUNI has not published a curriculum for this course, so this is the usual Nigerian university pattern. A Primary Education degree prepares teachers and heads for primary schools. Students study child development and learning, methods for teaching literacy, numeracy, basic science and social studies in the early grades, classroom management, educational assessment and school administration, with teaching practice in primary schools. Most programmes take four years for UTME entrants.
Careers
- Primary school teacher in public or private schools, after registration with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria.
- Head teacher or school administrator with experience.
- Local Government Education Authority roles in supervision and inspection.
- Running your own nursery and primary school.
- Further study in Early Childhood Education, Curriculum or Educational Management.

Accreditation
GOUNI’s accreditation page says all its programmes have NUC accreditation, without naming them. Primary Education was not in the August 2021 list of 13 GOUNI programmes with full accreditation, it is not on the NUC-approved sandwich list on GOUNI’s form page, and I found no NUC report page for it. Its status is not confirmed.
GOUNI Primary Education: frequently asked questions
What is the cut-off mark for Primary Education at Godfrey Okoye University? If GOUNI admits into it, the minimum is 150, its 2026/2027 figure for Education. The course is not on JAMB’s list for GOUNI, so get written confirmation first.

Do I need JAMB to study Primary Education at a college of education? You do not sit the UTME for NCE, but you must still register with JAMB for NCE (₦3,500 plus ₦700) and be admitted through CAPS, with at least four O’level credits.
What are the JAMB subjects for Primary Education Studies? JAMB’s general rule is English plus any three subjects, with five O’level credits including English. GOUNI also asks every applicant for a Mathematics credit.
