MOUAU Cut-Off Mark for Economics 2027/2028: Requirements, Subject Combination and Screening

The MOUAU cut off mark for Economics is 150 in the UTME with MOUAU as first choice. See the JAMB subject combination, O’level, how it differs from Agricultural Economics, screening and CAPS steps for 2027/2028.

The MOUAU cut off mark for Economics is 150 in the UTME, and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) has to be your first choice. That single minimum covered every course in MOUAU’s 2026/2027 screening notice. The university did not publish a separate departmental figure for Economics.

2027/2028 update: MOUAU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

MOUAU also runs Economics Education and Agricultural Economics, and candidates mix the three up all the time. This page covers the official figures for B.Sc Economics, a safe target score (my advice), the subject combination, O’level and Direct Entry rules, how MOUAU screens, a worked example, the CAPS steps and how the three courses differ.

Safe target score for Economics at MOUAU (my advice)

MOUAU does not release the score of the last candidate it admitted into each course. The bands below are my own reading as an admissions adviser, not MOUAU figures, and they assume your O’level subjects are complete.

Your UTME scoreMy read for MOUAU Economics
Below 150Not eligible for any MOUAU course
150 to 169Eligible for screening, but an offer is uncertain
170 to 194Reasonable chance with good O’level grades from one sitting
195 and aboveStrong. This is the range I would aim for.

For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 185, ideally 195, with credits in English, Mathematics and Economics plus two of Government, Geography, History or Literature in English, ideally from one sitting.

Merit, catchment and your realistic odds

MOUAU is a federal university, so its offers follow the federal mix of merit, catchment and educationally less developed states. It has not published its own split or a catchment list for 2026/2027. Plan as if you must win on merit: a good UTME score and clean O’level grades from one sitting are the two things you control. Economics usually sits between Accounting and Marketing in demand. If your score is low, Economics Education in MOUAU’s College of Education uses a similar UTME combination and is a reasonable fallback.

UTME subject combination and O’level for MOUAU Economics

RequirementEconomics at MOUAU
UTME (JAMB general entry)Use of English, Economics, Mathematics and one of Government, History, Geography, Literature in English or French
Alternative general lineEconomics, Mathematics and any other Arts or Social Science subject
MOUAU UTME remarkNone on Myschool’s reprint of the entry (Social and Management Sciences)
Mathematics waiverABU, UNIJOS, UNIMAID, EKSU and ESUTECH make Mathematics optional; MOUAU is not on that list, so take Mathematics
O’level (JAMB general entry)Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any two Arts or Social Science subjects
Exams acceptedWAEC, NECO, NABTEB
SittingsNot more than two is the usual rule; MOUAU weights the number of sittings in screening

JAMB prints two general UTME lines for Economics. Both fix Economics and Mathematics; the first names Government, History, Geography, Literature in English or French as the third subject, and the second allows any Arts or Social Science subject. Pick from the first list (Government is the common choice) and you satisfy both. Commerce is a weaker third subject: UNICAL refuses it at O’level and UNILAG refuses it in the UTME, and MOUAU has said nothing either way.

At O’level you need credits in English, Mathematics and Economics plus two Arts or Social Science subjects. Government, Geography, History, Literature and CRS are the usual choices. Confirm the combination on your own JAMB e-brochure before you register.

Direct Entry

JAMB’s general Direct Entry line asks for two A-level passes in Economics and one of Mathematics, Statistics, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Accounting, Business Management, History or Government. Some universities also take ND or HND at upper credit. No MOUAU-specific remark appears on the reprint, and MOUAU’s 2026/2027 notice gave no Direct Entry rules, so ask COLMAS before you buy a Direct Entry form.

Is Economics at MOUAU accredited? The delisting and the 2025 reinstatement

MOUAU runs Economics in its College of Management Sciences (COLMAS), and the course appears on the university’s official department list (last modified 19 June 2026). The college has had a rough decade. In August 2017 The Sun reported that the Federal Government, acting on a Federal Executive Council decision passed down through the Ministry of Education, had told seven federal universities of agriculture and technology to stop running management courses and stick to their core mandate. MOUAU was one of the seven, and JAMB removed the affected courses from its brochure. MOUAU’s spokespeople disputed the delisting at the time.

On 20 March 2025 Myschool reported that the National Universities Commission (NUC) had approved the reinstatement of five previously delisted COLMAS programmes: B.Sc Accounting, B.Sc Marketing, B.Sc Banking and Finance, B.Sc Business Administration and B.Sc Economics. The letter, addressed to the then Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, was signed by Abubakar M. Girei, Acting Director of Academic Planning at the NUC, and followed an expert team’s assessment of the university’s staff and facilities. The report does not say when or why the programmes were delisted, so I treat the 2017 directive as background and not as the confirmed cause.

For you, this means B.Sc Economics is back with NUC approval, and MOUAU’s 2026/2027 screening notice covered every course. No accreditation grade was published with the news, so I am not claiming one.

Do not confuse the three economics-flavoured courses at MOUAU. B.Sc Economics sits in COLMAS and uses the UTME combination above. Economics Education sits in the College of Education and trains teachers. Agricultural Economics sits in the College of Agricultural Economics, Rural Sociology and Extension, and JAMB groups it under Agriculture with English, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science and Mathematics or Physics, without Economics. If you register Agricultural Economics with an arts and social science combination, your subjects will not match JAMB’s requirements for that course, and that blocks the admission.

How MOUAU screens Economics candidates

MOUAU’s 2026/2027 screening notice was signed by the Registrar, Dr (Mrs) Nkeiruka Charity Mbanasor, and reprinted by Myschool on 20 June 2026. I could not open the original on mouau.edu.ng, so read these details as a reprint of the notice.

Worked example: two Economics candidates compared

MOUAU has not published an aggregate formula. To show how grades and sittings can move a ranking, here is an illustrative method many Nigerian universities use: UTME score divided by 8 (up to 50 points) plus O’level points for five relevant subjects, with A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5 (up to 50 points). This is my illustration only.

  1. Ifeanyi scored 188 with B3 in English, B2 in Mathematics, A1 in Economics, B3 in Government, B3 in Literature in English from one sitting. UTME points: 188 ÷ 8 = 23.50. O’level points: 8 + 9 + 10 + 8 + 8 = 43. Illustrative total: 66.50.
  2. Amarachi scored 180 with C4 in English, C6 in Mathematics, C5 in Economics, C4 in Geography, C5 in CRS from two sittings. UTME points: 180 ÷ 8 = 22.50. O’level points: 7 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 6 = 31. Illustrative total: 53.50.
  3. The gap: 66.50 minus 53.50 = 13.00 points. Eight UTME marks separate them, worth just one point under this method, yet the final gap is much larger. Grades and sittings did most of the work.

How to apply for Economics at MOUAU, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the UTME with the right subjects: pick Economics at MOUAU with Use of English, Economics, Mathematics and Government (or Geography, History or Literature), and make MOUAU your first choice. If you chose another school, do a JAMB change of institution before screening opens; if you chose the wrong course, read our JAMB change of course guide.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at an accredited JAMB CBT centre as soon as your result is out. MOUAU weights sittings, so upload your best single sitting if one sitting covers all five subjects.
  4. Register on the MOUAU portal: when screening opens, go to portal.mouau.edu.ng, enter your details and generate the Remita invoice.
  5. Pay ₦2,000: by card or cash at any bank through Remita. Keep the RRR number and the receipt.
  6. Watch the portal: MOUAU posts screening outcomes and admission status there. No test date was published for 2026/2027.
  7. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. JAMB gives four weeks to accept, and our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  8. Pay acceptance and complete clearance: MOUAU’s acceptance and school fees were not in any source I reached. Take the amount from the invoice on your portal and pay only through it.

Warning

Every genuine MOUAU offer shows up on JAMB CAPS, and JAMB said in May 2026 that admissions outside CAPS are illegal. Anyone selling a MOUAU “slot”, a “special list” or a guaranteed change into this course is selling something that does not exist. Pay MOUAU only through the invoice your portal generates.

For the 2026/2027 cycle, JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the date public universities should finish admissions. If you applied this year, look at CAPS rather than waiting for a printed list.

Studying Economics at MOUAU

MOUAU’s official department list includes a Department of Economics in the College of Management Sciences, and the NUC reinstatement names the degree as B.Sc Economics. MOUAU is a federal university of agriculture at Umudike, about 10 km from Umuahia in Abia State, set up by federal decree in November 1992.

What you study

  • Theory: microeconomics and macroeconomics from 100 level to advanced level.
  • Quantitative tools: mathematics for economists, statistics and econometrics.
  • Applied areas: development economics, public finance, monetary economics and international trade.
  • Agriculture and resources: agricultural and environmental economics fit naturally at a university of agriculture.
  • Nigerian economy: economic history, policy and planning.
  • Research: research methods and a final-year project; MOUAU’s handbook has the exact course list.

Degree, duration and accreditation

The degree is B.Sc Economics, as named in the NUC reinstatement reported in March 2025. Economics normally takes four years from 100 level in Nigeria, but no MOUAU source I reached confirms the duration. No accreditation grade was published in the sources I checked.

Careers

  • Economist or research analyst in banks, ministries and the Central Bank.
  • Policy and planning officer in government agencies and NGOs.
  • Data and market analysis roles in companies and consultancies.
  • Development and agricultural economics work with donor projects.
  • Banking, insurance and investment roles.
  • Postgraduate study in economics, finance or development.

Mistakes that cost Economics applicants a MOUAU place

  • Registering Agricultural Economics with arts subjects: JAMB groups it under Agriculture with science subjects.
  • Dropping Mathematics: some universities waive it, but MOUAU is not among them.
  • Using Commerce as the third UTME subject: Government, Geography, History or Literature fits both JAMB lines.
  • Treating 150 as an admission score: it only opens screening.
  • Combining two weak sittings: MOUAU weights the number of sittings.
  • Missing the CAPS window: JAMB gives four weeks to accept.

MOUAU cut off mark for Economics: frequently asked questions

What are the JAMB subjects for Economics at MOUAU? Use of English, Economics, Mathematics and one of Government, History, Geography, Literature in English or French. MOUAU has no special remark on the brochure reprint, so the general line applies.

Is Mathematics compulsory for Economics at MOUAU? Treat it as compulsory. A few universities waive Mathematics in the UTME, but MOUAU is not one of them, and the O’level line needs a Mathematics credit.

What is the difference between Economics and Agricultural Economics at MOUAU? Economics is a COLMAS B.Sc with arts and social science UTME subjects. Agricultural Economics is in the agriculture group and needs Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science and Mathematics or Physics.

Is 190 enough for Economics in MOUAU? 190 is well above the 150 minimum and inside the band where I see a reasonable chance. With good O’level grades from one sitting, it is a competitive score.

Sources and updates

The 150 minimum, the first-choice rule, the 6 June 2026 opening, the ₦2,000 Remita fee, the portal address, the awaiting-result rule and the weighting of O’level grades and sittings come from MOUAU’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar, Dr (Mrs) Nkeiruka Charity Mbanasor, as reprinted by Myschool on 20 June 2026; I could not open the original on mouau.edu.ng. The national minimum of 150, the 31 October 2026 admission deadline, the four-week acceptance window and the warning that admissions outside CAPS are illegal come from the News Agency of Nigeria’s report of the JAMB 2026 policy meeting (11 May 2026). The college and department names come from MOUAU’s official Academic Department by Faculty page (last modified 19 June 2026). The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules come from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Economics (Social and Management Sciences), which carries no MOUAU remark. The Agricultural Economics subjects come from the JAMB entry already used on our Agricultural Economics page. The reinstatement comes from Myschool’s 20 March 2025 report of the NUC letter, and the 2017 background from The Sun (20 August 2017). The safe target table and the worked example are my own advice and illustration, and the course content and career lists describe how the subject is usually taught in Nigeria, not a MOUAU handbook. MOUAU’s fees, the exact degree title and the duration were not published in any source I reached. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if MOUAU publishes a departmental cut-off or new requirements.
