ESUT Insurance and Risk Management Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028: Aggregate, Requirements and Screening

ESUT’s minimum UTME score for Insurance and Risk Management in 2027/2028 is 160, and ESUT publishes no merit score or aggregate formula. See what you can calculate, the subjects, O’level and ND rules, screening terms and careers.

The ESUT cut off mark for Insurance and Risk Management for 2026/2027 is 160 in the 2026 UTME. Enugu State University of Science and Technology’s official Post-UTME advert of 4 July 2026 did not name the course in its higher bands, so the general 160 minimum for “other courses” applies. A score of 160 or more, ESUT as your institution and the right subjects made you eligible for its online screening.

2027/2028 update: ESUT cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

ESUT does not publish a final merit score, and it has not published an aggregate formula either, so any “aggregate breakdown” you see online for ESUT is somebody’s estimate. This guide shows you what can be worked out from official figures, how your O’level grades might change your position, the subject combination, an ESUT-specific ND entry rule from the JAMB brochure, the CAPS steps, a safe target score marked as my advice, and the careers the course leads to.

Keep the two numbers apart. The minimum UTME score is the gate ESUT announces before screening; below it, the portal will not take your application for that course. The merit score is the lowest score actually admitted into the course after screening, and ESUT does not announce it. Most of the confusion online about “ESUT departmental cut-off marks” comes from treating the first as the second.

2025/2026160Minimum UTME to apply (not named, so “Others”)Previous year, from a blog summary of ESUT’s notice
Any yearNot publishedFinal merit score for Insurance and Risk ManagementNo ESUT list found

Insurance and Risk Management stayed in the general band in both years I could trace. It is one of the smaller courses in the Faculty of Management Sciences, and it rarely tops anyone’s list, which is why ESUT has had no reason to raise its minimum. Bands can change, so check the next advert before you plan around 160.

Some blogs quote much higher ESUT “cut-offs” for courses such as Accounting (246) and Medicine (314) without an ESUT document behind them. None gives an official figure for Insurance and Risk Management, so ignore any number ESUT did not publish.

Safe target score for Insurance and Risk Management at ESUT (my advice)

This is my advice, not an ESUT rule. Most of the competition for this course comes from candidates CAPS moves across from Accountancy and Banking and Finance. A score comfortably above 160 with clean O’level credits is usually what decides it.

Your UTME scoreMy read for ESUT Insurance and Risk Management
160 to 169Eligible, but close to the line. Good O’level grades help.
170 to 189A fair chance.
190 to 209A good chance.
210 and aboveComfortable. You could also compete for Banking and Finance.

For a 2027 attempt, my safe target for ESUT Insurance and Risk Management is 185 or more, with credits in English, Mathematics and Economics.

Catchment and state of origin

ESUT has not published a catchment list. It is owned by the Enugu State Government, so Enugu indigenes are its primary catchment, but it admits candidates from every state. The 45/35/20 merit, catchment and ELDS split you may have read about is federal university policy, and ESUT has not said it applies it. If you are from outside Enugu, plan to win on your score and grades rather than on state of origin.

JAMB subject combination and O’level requirements for ESUT Insurance and Risk Management

RequirementInsurance and Risk Management
UTME subjectsUse of English, Mathematics, Economics and one other subject
O’levelFive credits: English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any two of Accounting, Business Methods, Commerce, Government, Geography and Statistics
SittingsNot stated in ESUT’s advert; most universities allow up to two. Confirm on JAMB’s e-brochure
Direct Entry (general)Two A’level passes from Economics, Accounts, Business Management, Government, Geography and Statistics
Direct Entry (ESUT remark)ND at a minimum of lower credit in a relevant discipline, plus the UTME requirements, into 200 level
Special requirementsNone published by ESUT

These come from the JAMB brochure entry for Insurance and Risk Management as reprinted by Myschool (checked 29 October 2026). The O’level list is narrower than for most Management Sciences courses: your two extra credits must come from Accounting, Business Methods, Commerce, Government, Geography and Statistics. A credit in Biology or Literature will not count toward those two.

The ESUT remark on the page is useful if you have an ND. ESUT accepts an ND of at least lower credit in a relevant discipline into 200 level, provided you also meet the UTME (O’level) requirements. ND Insurance, Banking and Finance, Accountancy and Business Administration are the obvious fits, but confirm with the department that yours counts as relevant.

How ESUT screening works for Insurance and Risk Management

These were the 2026/2027 screening terms in ESUT’s advert. The window has closed for this session, but they show you what to prepare for 2027.

DetailESUT 2026/2027 screening

TestNone. Screening is online only, with no physical screening and no aptitude test
Awaiting resultsAllowed for May/June 2026 WAEC, NECO and NABTEB, but results released after 30 September 2026 are not accepted
O’level uploadEvery candidate must upload O’level results on JAMB CAPS
NamesMust match on your O’level certificates, UTME result and other documents
Admission statusPublished on the ESUT portal and JAMB CAPS

ESUT has not published an aggregate formula. The 2026/2027 advert sets a minimum UTME score per course and an online screening with no test, and it says nothing about weights or O’level grade points. So the only arithmetic you can do with official figures is to check how far you are above your course’s minimum. Some blogs quote a Post-UTME percentage for ESUT; that cannot be right for 2026/2027, because there was no Post-UTME test to score.

Worked example for a Insurance and Risk Management candidate

Take Uche, who scored 181 in the 2026 UTME with B3, C4, C4, C5 and C5 in English, Mathematics, Economics, Commerce and Government.

  1. Eligibility check (official): 181 minus the 160 minimum = 21 marks above the line.
  2. UTME half (illustrative method): 181 ÷ 8 = 22.63 out of 50.
  3. O’level half (illustrative method): 8 + 7 + 7 + 6 + 6 = 34 out of 50.
  4. Illustrative total: 22.63 + 34 = 56.63 out of 100.

Amarachi scored 166 with B2, B3, B3, B3 and C4. Her illustrative total is 20.75 + 40 = 60.75, ahead of Uche with 15 fewer UTME marks. If ESUT ranks on UTME alone, Uche leads. ESUT has not said which method it uses, so this is why I tell candidates to treat their grades as part of their score.

To see why your O’level grades can still matter, here is a method some other Nigerian universities use: half the aggregate from the UTME (your score divided by 8, out of 50) and half from five O’level subjects (A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5, out of 50). ESUT has not published this or any other formula. I use it only to compare two candidates, never to predict an ESUT cut-off.

How to apply for Insurance and Risk Management at ESUT, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you need to buy the UTME form.
  2. Register the UTME with the right subjects: pick Use of English, Mathematics, Economics and one other subject such as Government or Commerce and choose ESUT and Insurance and Risk Management. ESUT’s 2026 advert also let candidates who chose another school apply after a JAMB change of institution, but choosing ESUT from the start saves you that step and its cost.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: once your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is out, have it uploaded to your JAMB profile at an accredited CBT centre or JAMB office. ESUT’s advert makes this compulsory for every candidate, and a result that is missing on CAPS can hold your admission back even after ESUT picks you.
  4. Open the ESUT screening form: go to portal.esut.edu.ng, select the session, and under Regular Students open the Admission Screening Registration for that session (Direct Entry has its own form). Enter your JAMB registration number and fill the details form to generate an invoice.
  5. Pay ₦2,000: pay at a commercial bank through Enugu State IGR Pay Direct with the printed invoice and its reference number, or pay online with a debit card.
  6. Finish and print: return to the portal, re-enter your JAMB registration number, complete the form, confirm and submit, then print the acknowledgement slip. ESUT warns that false information leads to disqualification.
  7. Check and accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. If ESUT has offered you Insurance and Risk Management, accept it, then print your JAMB admission letter.
  8. Pay the acceptance fee on the ESUT portal: blogs report ESUT’s acceptance fee at about ₦26,000 (₦26,100 in some reports). ESUT’s 2026/2027 notices I checked do not state it, so confirm the amount on the portal before you pay, and keep the receipt for clearance.

Warning

Paying ESUT’s acceptance fee does not accept your JAMB offer. Accept the admission on JAMB CAPS first, because an offer left unaccepted on CAPS can be withdrawn, and ESUT cannot register you without it.

ESUT’s 2026/2027 admission list appeared on JAMB CAPS on 13 October 2026, Myschool reported. JAMB gave candidates four weeks to accept an offer and set 31 October 2026 as the end of admissions for public universities. Myschool also reported on 28 October 2026 that ESUT had released change of course and transfer forms for 2026/2027. I have not read their terms, so check the portal if CAPS shows a course other than the one you applied for.

If a CAPS status confuses you, our JAMB CAPS guide explains each one. Candidates who chose another school can read the JAMB change of institution guide, and if you plan to sit the UTME again, start with when JAMB 2027 registration starts.

Studying Insurance and Risk Management at ESUT

Insurance and Risk Management is in ESUT’s Faculty of Management Sciences, alongside Accountancy, Banking and Finance, Business Administration, Co-operative Economics and Management, Insurance and Risk Management, Marketing, Mass Communication and Public Administration. ESUT’s main campus is at Agbani in Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State. The pages I checked do not confirm where the faculty’s buildings sit, so treat Agbani as the likely base and confirm when you resume. Nigerian B.Sc. programmes in this field run for four years for UTME entrants. Direct Entry candidates start at 200 level and finish in three.

Insurance and Risk Management teaches you how risks are measured, priced, transferred and controlled, and how insurance companies run. It overlaps with Banking and Finance in the early years and becomes more specialised later. Expect areas like these:

  • Principles and practice of insurance: insurable interest, utmost good faith, indemnity and contribution.
  • Life and non-life insurance: life assurance, motor, fire, marine and aviation, and liability cover.
  • Risk management: identifying, measuring and controlling risk in firms.
  • Claims, underwriting and reinsurance.
  • Insurance law and regulation in Nigeria.
  • Business statistics, actuarial basics, accounting and economics.
  • Industrial training (SIWES) and a final-year research project.

Accreditation: After the National Universities Commission’s 2024 exercise, ESUT reported full accreditation for programmes in its Faculties of Law, Engineering, Sciences, Environmental Science, Education and Administration (Enugu State Government, 21 May 2025). “Administration” appears to mean the faculty ESUT’s 2026/2027 advert calls Management Sciences, but the report names faculties, not programmes, and gives no grade for Insurance and Risk Management on its own. I found no programme-level result, so ask the department to confirm its NUC status when you go for clearance.

Career paths after Insurance and Risk Management

  • Underwriting, claims and customer roles in insurance companies.
  • Insurance broking firms and loss adjusters.
  • Risk and compliance roles in banks, pension fund administrators and large companies.
  • Regulatory work: the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) supervises the industry.
  • Sales and agency management for life and general insurers.
  • Professional qualifications: the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) runs the industry’s professional exams. Check its current exemptions for graduates when you finish.

Mistakes Insurance and Risk Management applicants make

  • Trusting a made-up aggregate: ESUT has not published one, so any ESUT “aggregate cut-off” is an estimate.
  • Counting the wrong O’level subjects: your two extra credits must come from the brochure’s list, such as Commerce, Government or Accounting.
  • Applying with an ND below lower credit: ESUT’s remark sets lower credit as the minimum.
  • Expecting a Post-UTME test to rescue a low score: ESUT’s 2026/2027 screening had no test, so your UTME score and O’level do the work.
  • Forgetting the CAPS upload: ESUT’s advert makes the O’level upload compulsory for every candidate.
  • Late awaiting results: results released after 30 September 2026 were not accepted.
  • Name mismatches: ESUT asks that names match across O’level certificates, the UTME result and other documents.
