The SUMAS Industrial Chemistry cut off mark for 2026/2027 is 150 in the UTME. The degree’s full name at SUMAS is Pure and Industrial Chemistry. The State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, set 150 as the general minimum for all programmes in its 2026/2027 Post-UTME and Direct Entry notice, the same as in 2025/2026. The course appeared as “Industrial Chemistry” on the SUMAS supplementary admission list in October 2026, open to candidates with 150 or more in the 2026 UTME.
2027/2028 update: SUMAS cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
SUMAS has not published a departmental cut off for Pure and Industrial Chemistry in any year, nor an aggregate formula, merit list scores, or catchment and ELDS lists. The programme holds full NUC accreditation from the 2025 exercise. This guide covers the verified figures, the JAMB subject combination (where many candidates trip over Mathematics), the O’level rules, a worked screening example, my safe score advice, and where a Chemistry degree from SUMAS can take you.

Cut off history
| Session | Minimum UTME to apply | Chemistry departmental cut off | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 (main screening) | 150 | Not published | SUMAS Post-UTME and Direct Entry notice |

The 150 is the minimum to be screened. The departmental cut off, the lowest score actually admitted after screening, has never been released for this course. SUMAS’s batch lists show masked JAMB numbers by course without scores. Expect the general minimum to be reviewed after each JAMB policy meeting. One private directory quotes 160 for SUMAS and calls it federal; it is not a SUMAS figure, and SUMAS belongs to Enugu State.
Industrial Chemistry on the 2027/2028 supplementary list
Myschool and FreshNote reported on 17 October 2026 that SUMAS had opened a supplementary admission round for courses with places left. “Industrial Chemistry” was on it. SUMAS runs one chemistry degree, Pure and Industrial Chemistry, so the entry refers to this programme. I could not find the notice on sumas.edu.ng, so read the details as reported.
- Score: 150 or more in the 2026 UTME.
- Who could apply: candidates who chose SUMAS first but missed their course, and those willing to make SUMAS their first choice.
- Other science courses listed: Biochemistry, Genetics and Biotechnology, Applied Microbiology, ICT, Pure and Industrial Physics, Pharmacology and Human Physiology, plus the Engineering degrees and Architecture.
- Not listed: Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Science, Computer Science and Quantity Surveying, among others.
- Portal: register on samp.sumas.edu.ng if you never did SUMAS Post-UTME. If you already applied, use your existing account.
Candidates who missed Pharmacy or Chemical Engineering often look at Industrial Chemistry. Pharmacy was not reopened, while Chemical Engineering was, so compare both before you change course.
Supplementary deadline
SUMAS has published no closing date for the supplementary round, and JAMB told public universities to finish 2026 admissions by 31 October 2026. If you want Pure and Industrial Chemistry this session, change your course on JAMB and call SUMAS admissions (08067390088) now.
UTME subject combination and O’level requirements
JAMB’s general entry for Pure and Industrial Chemistry, as reproduced by Myschool, asks for Use of English, Chemistry, Mathematics and one of Physics, Biology or Agricultural Science. SUMAS is not named in the brochure’s remarks for this course (UNN, UNIPORT and one private university are), so the general rule should apply. Confirm on the JAMB e-brochure before registering.
| Requirement | Pure and Industrial Chemistry at SUMAS |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics, Biology or Agricultural Science |
| O’level (JAMB brochure) | Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology or Agricultural Science |
| O’level (SUMAS rule) | Five credits including English Language, Mathematics and Physics, plus two relevant subjects |
| Sittings | Not more than two |
| UTME score | 150 or more in the 2026 UTME |
| Age | At least 16 by 30 September 2026 |
| Choice | SUMAS first on JAMB CAPS |
| Direct Entry (SUMAS rule) | At least second class lower or its equivalent in OND, HND or a first degree, cleared on JAMB e-Facility |
| Direct Entry (JAMB brochure) | Two A level passes in Chemistry and Mathematics; or ND in Science Laboratory Technology or a relevant field plus the UTME requirements |
Points to watch:
- Mathematics is compulsory in the UTME. Unlike Biochemistry or Microbiology, Chemistry does not let you swap Mathematics out. Biology students who write English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics are not eligible for this course.
- Physics at O’level is required either way. SUMAS asks every applicant for a Physics credit, even if Biology is your fourth UTME subject.
- Physics is the best fourth UTME subject. It keeps you eligible for Industrial Physics and the Engineering degrees on the same supplementary list.
Our JAMB Chemistry syllabus guide lists the topics for your main paper.
How SUMAS screening works for Chemistry applicants
SUMAS called its 2026/2027 Post-UTME a screening exercise, published no written test and has not explained how it weighs UTME scores against O’level grades. A later notice asked some admitted candidates who skipped Post-UTME to register on SAMP, pay the screening fee and be verified at the ICT Unit, which points to screening on records. SUMAS has not confirmed it.
You can be ruled out before any ranking for a score under 150, SUMAS not being your first choice, missing O’level results on CAPS, a third sitting, or details that do not match between JAMB and the SUMAS portal.
Worked aggregate example
The 50/50 aggregate used by many Nigerian universities shows how the parts could combine. SUMAS has not published its formula; this is an illustration only.
- UTME part: UTME score ÷ 8, maximum 50 points.
- O’level part: five relevant grades scored A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5, maximum 50 points.
- Aggregate: the sum, out of 100.
Adaeze scored 208 in the UTME (English, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics). Her NECO result shows B3 in English Language, B2 in Mathematics, A1 in Chemistry, B3 in Physics and C4 in Biology.
| Part | Working | Points |
|---|---|---|
| UTME | 208 ÷ 8 | 26 |
| O’level | 8 + 9 + 10 + 8 + 7 | 42 |
| Aggregate | 26 + 42 | 68 out of 100 |
Her A1 in Chemistry adds two points over a B3, the same as 16 extra UTME marks. Strong science grades can make up for a modest JAMB score under a method like this.
How competitive is Pure and Industrial Chemistry at SUMAS?
Less competitive than the health courses. SUMAS reopened it in the October 2026 supplementary round, which shows places remained after the main screening. SUMAS has not published a quota for the course, nor catchment or ELDS states. The 45% merit, 35% catchment and 20% ELDS split quoted online is a federal university guideline, and SUMAS has not said it applies it.
My advice, not an official figure: a UTME score of 175 or more, with credits in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology at no more than two sittings, gives you a comfortable chance. Candidates between 150 and 175 can still be considered, especially in the supplementary round.
Is SUMAS Pure and Industrial Chemistry accredited?
Yes. It is one of the 15 SUMAS programmes the NUC granted full accreditation after the exercise held from 28 October to 3 December 2025, listed under this exact name.
Chemists in Nigeria are regulated by the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON), and graduates who want to practise as chartered chemists usually register with it after graduation. SUMAS has not published anything about ICCON recognition of the programme, so ask the department during clearance.
What you study in Pure and Industrial Chemistry
The degree combines core chemistry with its use in industry. SUMAS has not published its course outline, so this list reflects typical NUC Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry programmes:
- Inorganic, organic and physical chemistry
