SUMAS Cut-Off Mark for Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) 2027/2028: Requirements and Portal Screening

The SUMAS cut off mark for Pharmacy (Pharm.D) in 2027/2028 is 150. See the UTME subjects, O’Level rules, NUC and PCN accreditation position, a worked screening example and the score to aim for.

The SUMAS cut off mark for Pharmacy (Doctor of Pharmacy, Pharm.D) in 2026/2027 is 150 in the UTME. That is the general minimum the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, set for all its programmes in the 2026/2027 Post-UTME notice, and it was the same 150 in 2025/2026. A candidate with 150 or more, SUMAS as first choice and five relevant O’Level credits could apply for screening.

2027/2028 update: SUMAS cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

What SUMAS has not done, in any year, is publish a departmental cut off mark for Pharmacy. No merit list with scores, no aggregate formula, no catchment list. Pharm.D is one of the most sought-after courses at SUMAS, so 150 will not carry you far. Below I set out the official figures, the subjects you need, what is known about screening and accreditation, the score I would aim for as a consultant, and the full route from JAMB profile code to acceptance fee.

Keep two numbers apart when you read about cut off marks. The general cut off of 150 decides whether you may apply. A departmental cut off is the lowest score that actually got into one course in one year, and a school only knows it after screening ends. SUMAS publishes the first and has never released the second.

SUMAS Pharmacy cut off mark history

This is everything I could verify about the Pharmacy cut off at SUMAS across the last two sessions.

SessionMinimum UTME to applyPharmacy departmental cut offSource
2026/2027150Not publishedSUMAS Post-UTME and Direct Entry notice
2025/2026 (previous year)150Not publishedSUMAS notice as reproduced by Myschool, July 2025

The minimum stayed at 150 for two sessions, but a university reviews it every year after JAMB’s policy meeting, so look out for the 2027/2028 notice before you plan around it. A few directory sites quote 160 for SUMAS. That number comes from a private listing that also calls SUMAS a federal university, which it is not. SUMAS is owned by the Enugu State Government.

SUMAS admission lists show masked JAMB numbers under each course with no scores beside them. Nobody outside the admissions office can tell you the lowest score admitted into Pharm.D last year, whatever a blog claims.

Is Pharmacy at SUMAS accredited?

By the National Universities Commission, yes. NUC visited SUMAS between 28 October and 3 December 2025 and granted full accreditation to 15 programmes, and Doctor of Pharmacy was one of them. For a programme that has only been running since SUMAS opened, that is a good sign.

The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) is a separate question, and it matters because you need PCN registration to practise as a pharmacist. When I checked the PCN website on 29 October 2026, its page of PCN-accredited universities listed 25 schools, and SUMAS was not among them. That page looks old: it was last modified in September 2024. Council lists often lag behind visits, and SUMAS has said some professional bodies have verified its programmes while others have not yet scheduled visits, without naming which. So the honest position is that PCN accreditation for SUMAS Pharm.D is not on the council’s published list, and you should ask SUMAS for its current PCN status before you accept an offer.

UTME subject combination and O’Level requirements for Pharmacy

SUMAS does not publish a subject list for each course. It follows the JAMB brochure, and the brochure entry for Doctor of Pharmacy (as reproduced by Myschool) reads as below. Check the JAMB e-brochure when you register, because entries are updated.

RequirementDoctor of Pharmacy
UTME subjectsUse of English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
O’Level (JAMB brochure)Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology
O’Level (SUMAS rule)Five credits including English Language, Mathematics and Physics, plus two other relevant subjects
SittingsNot more than two (only Medicine and Surgery is limited to one sitting)
Direct Entry (SUMAS rule)At least second class lower or its equivalent in OND, HND or a first degree, cleared on JAMB e-Facility
Direct Entry (JAMB brochure)Three A Level passes in Chemistry, Biology or Zoology, and Physics or Mathematics

Combine the two O’Level rules and your safe set is English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, all at credit or better. Chemistry is the subject Pharmacy leans on hardest, from organic chemistry in the first year to drug analysis later, so a weak Chemistry grade is the one I would fix first.

The SUMAS notice names OND, HND and first degree holders for Direct Entry and does not mention A Level, JUPEB or IJMB. If those are your route, call the admissions office on 08067390088 before you pay for anything.

How SUMAS screening works for Pharmacy candidates

SUMAS described its 2026/2027 exercise as screening. It published no written Post-UTME test and no test date, and it has never said how it weighs your UTME score against your O’Level grades. Candidates admitted without doing the Post-UTME were later told to register on the SAMP portal, pay the screening fee and report to the ICT Unit for verification. That points to a records-based screening, though SUMAS has not confirmed it in so many words.

To see how a records-based ranking can work, here is the 50/50 method many Nigerian universities use. SUMAS has not published its formula, so treat this as an illustration only.

  1. UTME half: divide your UTME score by 8. A perfect 400 becomes 50.
  2. O’Level half: score each of your five relevant grades (A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5). The most you can get is 50.
  3. Total: add the two halves for a score out of 100.

Take Chidera, who scored 248 in the UTME and has A1 in Chemistry, B2 in Biology, B2 in Mathematics, B3 in Physics and C4 in English Language.

PartWorkingPoints
UTME248 ÷ 831
O’Level10 + 9 + 9 + 8 + 743
Total31 + 4374 out of 100

Under a method like this, the O’Level half moves the total as much as the UTME does. One grade step, say C4 to B3 in English, adds a point, which equals 8 extra UTME marks. A candidate retaking WAEC or NECO before another attempt can gain ground there more cheaply than through another JAMB sitting.

How competitive is Pharmacy at SUMAS?

Very. Pharm.D is a licensed profession, a six-year degree, and across Nigeria pharmacy schools receive far more applicants than they can take. At SUMAS, Pharmacy appeared in Batch 2 of the 2026/2027 admission list on 21 October 2026. It was not on the October 2026 supplementary admission list, which reopened only programmes that still had space. That list was mostly engineering and science courses, so Pharmacy seats appear to have been filled through the main batches.

SUMAS has not published its Pharmacy quota, a catchment list or an ELDS (educationally less developed states) list. The 45% merit, 35% catchment and 20% ELDS split you may read about is a guideline for federal universities, so do not assume it applies at a state-owned school like SUMAS.

My advice (not an official SUMAS figure): aim for 230 or above in the UTME, with A or B grades in Chemistry, Biology and Physics. If you land between 180 and 220, you can still be screened, but you are relying on how many strong candidates applied that year, so keep a second option open. A sensible backup within SUMAS is a related science course that uses the same UTME subjects.

How to get admission into SUMAS Pharmacy: step by step

These are the steps candidates most often trip over, in the order you will meet them.

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space, then your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to that NIN. JAMB replies with a profile code, which you take to a CBT centre to register for the UTME.
  2. Make SUMAS your first choice: at registration, choose State University of Medical and Applied Sciences, Igbo-Eno, as first choice and Doctor of Pharmacy as the course. If another school is your first choice, do a change of institution before SUMAS screening opens. SUMAS screens first-choice candidates only.
  3. Upload your O’Level to CAPS: your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result must sit on JAMB CAPS. For 2026/2027, SUMAS gave 15 August 2026 as its upload deadline. An accredited CBT centre can do it for you.
  4. Apply for SUMAS screening: when the Post-UTME portal opens, apply at sumas.edu.ng/apply or samp.sumas.edu.ng and pay the ₦2,000 fee with your JAMB registration number as the narration. Your JAMB number, date of birth, state of origin and course must match CAPS exactly. SUMAS allows one application per candidate.
  5. Check your admission: watch the SUMAS batch lists, then log in to JAMB e-Facility and open Check Admission Status and Access my CAPS. Confirm on the SAMP portal as well.
  6. Accept the offer on CAPS: click Accept and print your JAMB admission letter. If SUMAS offered you a different course, the 2026/2027 notice gave candidates three days to make the change on JAMB.
  7. Pay the acceptance fee: log in at eportal.sumas.edu.ng as NEW STUDENT with your JAMB number and SAMP password, generate the ₦50,000 acceptance fee invoice and pay through the SUMAS Revenue Portal. Do not pay anyone’s personal account.

Our SUMAS Post-UTME form 2026/2027 guide has the full screening notice, and the SUMAS instructions to successful candidates guide covers clearance after you accept. For the CAPS screens themselves, see our JAMB CAPS guide.

Check PCN status before you accept

SUMAS Pharm.D has full NUC accreditation, but SUMAS does not appear on the PCN website’s list of accredited universities. Ask the SUMAS admissions office (08067390088 or admissionofficer@sumas.edu.ng) for the programme’s current PCN position before you pay the acceptance fee.

What you study in the SUMAS Doctor of Pharmacy programme

Pharm.D replaced the old five-year B.Pharm in Nigeria and adds more clinical training. The early years cover the basic sciences, then human anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. After that you move into the core pharmacy subjects:

  • Pharmaceutical chemistry: how drugs are made, analysed and tested for quality.
  • Pharmaceutics: turning a drug into tablets, injections, creams and other dosage forms.
  • Pharmacology and toxicology: what drugs do in the body and when they harm it.
  • Pharmacognosy: medicines from plants and other natural sources.
  • Clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice: working with patients, doctors and nurses on safe, effective drug use, including clinical rotations in the final years.

SUMAS has not published the length of its programme, but Pharm.D in Nigeria runs for six years. You study at the Igbo-Eno campus in Udenu Local Government Area, Enugu State, on the Nsukka axis. The SUMAS Teaching Hospital is being developed on the same site, and the Enugu State Government reported in January 2026 that its outpatient department, a 100-bed Mother and Child Hospital and a 120-bed Medical Centre were complete. That gives clinical pharmacy students a hospital close by.

On fees, the only schedule SUMAS has put online is for 2022/2023, when Pharmacy and Allied Health students paid ₦301,400. The 2026/2027 figure may differ, and the ₦50,000 acceptance fee comes on top.

Career paths after Pharm.D

Once you graduate and register with the PCN, you can work in:

  • Hospital pharmacy, in government and private hospitals
  • Community pharmacy, running or managing a retail pharmacy
  • Industrial pharmacy, in drug manufacturing, quality control and production
  • Regulation, for example with NAFDAC or the PCN itself
  • Pharmaceutical sales, marketing and medical affairs
  • Teaching, research and postgraduate study

If Pharmacy does not work out this year, these SUMAS programmes use the same UTME subjects and are worth comparing:

Mistakes Pharmacy applicants make

  • Skipping Physics at O’Level: SUMAS asks every applicant for a Physics credit, so a Pharmacy hopeful without it cannot apply here.
  • Putting SUMAS second: only first-choice candidates are screened. Change institution before you pay for the form.
  • Details that do not match: a different date of birth or course on the SAMP portal from what JAMB holds can stall your application.
  • No O’Level on CAPS: SUMAS cannot move you forward without it, whatever your score.
  • Planning around invented cut offs: a made-up Pharmacy figure sends some candidates into the course with false hope and scares others away for nothing.

SUMAS Pharmacy cut off mark: frequently asked questions

Is 220 enough for Pharmacy in SUMAS? 220 clears the 150 minimum, so you can be screened. SUMAS has never published a Pharmacy cut off, so no one can promise it is enough; with A or B grades in Chemistry, Biology and Physics your chances improve, and I would treat 230 and above as the safer range.

Can I use awaiting result for SUMAS Pharmacy? Not in practice. The 2026/2027 notice required O’Level results on JAMB CAPS by 15 August 2026, so a result that is still awaited at the upload deadline will not be considered that year.

Does SUMAS accept two sittings for Pharmacy? Yes. SUMAS allows up to two sittings for every programme except Medicine and Surgery, which needs one sitting.

Is SUMAS Pharmacy accredited by PCN? SUMAS Pharm.D has full NUC accreditation from the late 2025 exercise, but SUMAS is not on the PCN website’s list of accredited universities, which appears not to have been updated since 2024. Confirm the current PCN status with SUMAS.
