ESUT Cut-Off Mark for Industrial Chemistry 2027/2028: Subject Combination, Requirements and Screening

ESUT’s minimum UTME score for Industrial Chemistry in 2027/2028 is 160, with no published merit score. See the JAMB subject combination, the ESUT O’level remark, screening terms, a worked example and a safe target.

The ESUT cut off mark for Industrial Chemistry for 2026/2027 is 160 in the 2026 UTME. Enugu State University of Science and Technology’s official Post-UTME advert of 4 July 2026 did not name Industrial Chemistry in its 180, 200, 220 or 240 bands, so the general 160 minimum for “other courses” applies. With 160 or more, ESUT as your institution and the right UTME subjects, you were eligible to apply for screening.

2027/2028 update: ESUT cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

That 160 only makes you eligible to apply. ESUT does not publish a final merit score for Industrial Chemistry or any other course. Below you will find the official figure, the cut-off history I could trace, my safe target score, the JAMB subject combination (Chemistry and Mathematics are both compulsory), the O’level rules including an ESUT remark on Biology, how ESUT’s no-test screening works, the CAPS steps, and what the degree prepares you for.

Keep the two numbers apart. The minimum UTME score is the gate ESUT announces before screening; below it, the portal will not take your application for that course. The merit score is the lowest score that was actually admitted into the course after screening, and ESUT does not announce it. Most of the confusion online about “ESUT departmental cut-off marks” comes from treating the first as the second.

Both years I could trace put Industrial Chemistry in the general band. In 2026/2027 ESUT moved Biochemistry and Microbiology up to 180 by name and left Industrial Chemistry at 160, which tells you ESUT sees less pressure on it than on the life sciences. Bands move each year, so use the older row as history and check the new advert when it comes out.

Some blogs quote much higher ESUT “cut-offs” for courses such as Medicine (314) and Nursing (290) without an ESUT document behind them. None of those lists gives an official figure for this course, so ignore any you see.

Safe target score for Industrial Chemistry at ESUT (my advice)

This is my advice, not an ESUT rule. Industrial Chemistry is a solid choice for science students who want a lab or manufacturing career, and it often takes candidates who first aimed at Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering or Biochemistry. Those candidates usually arrive with higher scores, which pushes the real competition above 160.

Your UTME scoreMy read for ESUT Industrial Chemistry
160 to 179Eligible for screening; admission depends on how many stronger applicants there are.
180 to 199A fair chance, better with good Chemistry and Mathematics grades.
200 to 219A good chance.
220 and aboveComfortable for Industrial Chemistry. You also meet ESUT’s Pharmacy minimum of 220.

For a 2027 attempt, my safe target for ESUT Industrial Chemistry is 200 or more, with credits in English, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics and a B grade in Chemistry if you can manage it.

Catchment and state of origin

ESUT has not published a catchment list. It is owned by the Enugu State Government, so Enugu indigenes are its primary catchment, but it admits candidates from every state. The 45/35/20 merit, catchment and ELDS split you may have read about is federal university policy, and ESUT has not said it applies it. Plan to win on your score and grades.

JAMB subject combination and O’level requirements for ESUT Industrial Chemistry

RequirementIndustrial Chemistry
UTME subjectsUse of English, Chemistry, Mathematics and one of Physics, Biology or Agricultural Science
O’level (general)Five credits: English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology or Agricultural Science
ESUT remarkESUT does not require an O’level credit in Biology or Agricultural Science
SittingsNot stated in ESUT’s advert; most universities allow up to two. Confirm on JAMB’s e-brochure
Direct EntryTwo A’level passes in Chemistry and Mathematics, or an ND in Science Laboratory Technology or a related programme plus the UTME requirements (general rule)
Special requirementsNone published by ESUT

These come from the JAMB brochure entry for Industrial Chemistry as reprinted by Myschool (checked 29 October 2026). Mathematics is compulsory in the UTME alongside Chemistry. Our shared fact sheet had listed Chemistry plus any two of Physics, Mathematics and Biology, which would let a candidate drop Mathematics; the brochure does not allow that, so take Mathematics.

The ESUT remark on the brochure page says ESUT does not insist on a Biology or Agricultural Science credit. In practice that means your five O’level credits can be English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and one other subject. I would still take Physics as the fourth UTME subject, because it keeps ESUT’s engineering and physical science courses open if CAPS offers you an alternative.

ESUT’s advert says Direct Entry candidates are screened online and must be cleared on JAMB e-facility by their former institutions; it does not publish DE grades, so confirm the ND grade it accepts with the department.

How ESUT screening works for Industrial Chemistry

These were the 2026/2027 screening terms in ESUT’s advert. The window has closed for this session, but they show you what to prepare for 2027.

ESUT has not published an aggregate formula. The 2026/2027 advert sets a minimum UTME score per course and an online screening with no test, and it says nothing about weights or O’level grade points. So the only arithmetic you can do with official figures is to check how far you are above your course’s minimum. Some blogs quote a Post-UTME percentage for ESUT; that cannot be right for 2026/2027, because there was no Post-UTME test to score.

Worked example for a Industrial Chemistry candidate

Take Obinna, who scored 205 in the 2026 UTME with B3, B3, C4, C5 and C5 in his five O’level subjects.

  1. Eligibility check (official): 205 minus the 160 minimum = 45 marks above the line.
  2. UTME half (illustrative method): 205 ÷ 8 = 25.63 out of 50.
  3. O’level half (illustrative method): 8 + 8 + 7 + 6 + 6 = 35 out of 50.
  4. Illustrative total: 25.63 + 35 = 60.63 out of 100.

Amaka scored 190 with A1, B2, B3, B3 and C4. Her illustrative total is 23.75 + 42 = 65.75, ahead of Obinna despite a UTME 15 marks lower. If ESUT ranks on UTME alone, Obinna leads. ESUT has not published its ranking method, so treat both your score and your grades as things to raise.

To see why your O’level grades can still matter, here is a method some other Nigerian universities use: half the aggregate from the UTME (your score divided by 8, out of 50) and half from five O’level subjects (A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6, C6 = 5, out of 50). ESUT has not published this or any other formula. I use it only to compare two candidates, never to predict an ESUT cut-off.

How to apply for Industrial Chemistry at ESUT, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN (for example NIN 12345678901) to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you need to buy the UTME form.
  2. Register the UTME with the right subjects: pick Use of English, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics and choose ESUT and Industrial Chemistry. ESUT’s 2026 advert also let candidates who chose another school apply after a JAMB change of institution, but choosing ESUT from the start saves you that step and its cost.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: once your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is out, have it uploaded to your JAMB profile at an accredited CBT centre or JAMB office. ESUT’s advert makes this compulsory for every candidate, and a result that is missing on CAPS can hold your admission back even after ESUT picks you.
  4. Open the ESUT screening form: go to portal.esut.edu.ng, select the session, and under Regular Students open the Admission Screening Registration for that session (Direct Entry has its own form). Enter your JAMB registration number and fill the details form to generate an invoice.
  5. Pay ₦2,000: pay at a commercial bank through Enugu State IGR Pay Direct with the printed invoice and its reference number, or pay online with a debit card.
  6. Finish and print: return to the portal, re-enter your JAMB registration number, complete the form, confirm and submit, then print the acknowledgement slip. ESUT warns that false information leads to disqualification.
  7. Check and accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS and Admission Status. If ESUT has offered you Industrial Chemistry, accept it, then print your JAMB admission letter.
  8. Pay the acceptance fee on the ESUT portal: blogs report ESUT’s acceptance fee at about ₦26,000 (₦26,100 in some reports). ESUT’s 2026/2027 notices I checked do not state it, so confirm the amount on the portal before you pay, and keep the receipt for clearance.

Warning

Paying ESUT’s acceptance fee does not accept your JAMB offer. Accept the admission on JAMB CAPS first, because an offer left unaccepted on CAPS can be withdrawn, and ESUT cannot register you without it.

ESUT’s 2026/2027 admission list appeared on JAMB CAPS on 13 October 2026, Myschool reported. JAMB gave candidates four weeks to accept an offer and set 31 October 2026 as the end of admissions for public universities. Myschool also reported on 28 October 2026 that ESUT had released change of course and transfer forms for 2026/2027. I have not read their terms, so check the portal if CAPS shows Industrial Chemistry when you applied for something else, or the other way round.

If a CAPS status confuses you, our JAMB CAPS guide explains each one. Candidates who chose another school can read the JAMB change of institution guide, and if you plan to sit the UTME again, start with when JAMB 2027 registration starts.

Studying Industrial Chemistry at ESUT

Industrial Chemistry is in ESUT’s Faculty of Physical Sciences. ESUT’s main campus is at Agbani in Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State, and the sciences are generally placed there, though the pages I checked do not confirm the building or campus for this department. B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry in Nigeria normally runs for four years, including an industrial attachment; ESUT has not stated the length on the pages I checked.

Industrial Chemistry takes the core of a chemistry degree and points it at production: how chemicals, fuels, food, drugs, paints and plastics are made, tested and controlled at scale. Expect these areas:

  • Organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry: the theory behind every later course.
  • Instrumental analysis: spectroscopy, chromatography and quality control methods used in factories and labs.
  • Unit operations and process chemistry: heat and mass transfer, reactors and scale-up, shared ground with chemical engineering.
  • Applied areas: petroleum and petrochemicals, polymers, surface coatings, food and fermentation, and environmental chemistry.
  • Industrial training (SIWES): a placement in a factory, lab or refinery, usually in the penultimate or final year.
  • A final-year research project.

Accreditation: After the National Universities Commission’s 2024 exercise, ESUT reported full accreditation for programmes in its Faculties of Law, Engineering, Sciences, Environmental Science, Education and Administration (Enugu State Government, 21 May 2025). The report names faculties, not programmes, and the sciences have since been split into Biological and Physical Sciences in ESUT’s 2026/2027 advert. I found no programme-level result for Industrial Chemistry, so ask the department to confirm its NUC status before you accept.

Career paths after Industrial Chemistry

  • Quality control and quality assurance chemist in food, beverage, paint, soap and pharmaceutical factories.
  • Production and process roles in manufacturing plants.
  • Laboratory analyst in oil and gas, environmental testing and regulatory agencies such as NAFDAC and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria.
  • Chemical sales and technical support for suppliers of industrial chemicals and equipment.
  • Teaching chemistry, with a teaching qualification and TRCN registration.
  • Postgraduate study in chemistry, petroleum chemistry or materials. Chemists in Nigeria can seek registration with the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON); check its current requirements when you graduate.

For UTME preparation, our JAMB Chemistry syllabus lists every topic you will be tested on. To compare with another school, see our UNICAL cut off mark guide.

Mistakes Industrial Chemistry applicants make

  • Dropping Mathematics from the UTME: the brochure makes Chemistry and Mathematics both compulsory.
  • Assuming Biochemistry’s figure applies: Biochemistry is 180 at ESUT; Industrial Chemistry is 160.
  • Counting on a Post-UTME test: ESUT’s 2026/2027 screening had no test.
  • Leaving O’level off CAPS: ESUT’s advert makes the upload compulsory.
  • Name mismatches: ESUT asks that names match across O’level certificates, UTME result and other documents.
