The UNN cut off mark for Geography for 2026/2027 is 160 in the UTME. That is the minimum the University of Nigeria, Nsukka set in its screening notice of 13 July 2026 for candidates who chose UNN first. UNN has not published a departmental merit or catchment cut-off for Geography for 2026/2027 or 2025/2026, and I have not found a sourced estimate for it either, so an exact “UNN Geography cut-off” online is somebody’s guess.
2027/2028 update: UNN cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
You may also read that UNN’s cut-off is 200. That is the minimum UNN declared at the JAMB 2026 policy meeting, as reported on 11 May 2026. UNN accepts screening applications from 160, its declared benchmark was 200, and Geography admits above the 160 line, though it is less crowded than Economics or Political Science. Below: the one subject you cannot skip, the O’level credits, Direct Entry routes (including an unusual Geography waiver), how screening worked, an aggregate example and the score I would aim for.
UNN cut off mark for Geography 2027/2028 at a glance
| Item | 2026/2027 position | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum UTME to apply for UNN screening | 160, with UNN as first choice | Official (UNN Registrar, 13 July 2026) |
| UNN minimum declared at the JAMB policy meeting | 200 | Reported by Vanguard and News Central, 11 May 2026 |
| JAMB national minimum for universities | 150 | JAMB policy meeting, 11 May 2026 |
| Merit cut-off for Geography | Not published | No UNN departmental list for 2025/2026 or 2026/2027 |
| Catchment cut-off for Geography | Not published | No UNN list |
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Geography and any two other subjects | JAMB brochure UNN remark (confirm on IBASS) |
| Campus | Nsukka campus, Faculty of Social Sciences | UNN |
| 2026/2027 screening window | 15 July to 5 August 2026 | Closed |
The 160 decides who may be screened. The departmental cut-off is the lowest score UNN finally admits into Geography after ranking, and it is never announced. My target score below is advice and is labelled that way.
UNN Geography cut-off history
Only the figures below trace back to UNN or JAMB. None of them is specific to Geography.
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 160 | UTME score needed to apply for UNN screening (UNN as first choice) | Official, UNN Registrar notice of 13 July 2026 |
| 2026/2027 | 200 | Minimum UNN declared at the JAMB 2026 policy meeting | Reported by Vanguard and News Central, 11 May 2026 |
| 2026/2027 | 150 | JAMB national minimum for all universities | Official JAMB policy, May 2026 |
| 2025/2026 | 160 | UTME and screening threshold in UNN’s advert (shopping) notice | Official notice, seen through reprints |
| 2025/2026 | 150 | JAMB national minimum for universities | Official JAMB policy, July 2025 |
| 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 | Not published | Departmental cut-off for this course | UNN has released no departmental list |
I have not seen even a blog estimate for Geography at UNN that names a source. If a website gives you an exact “Geography cut-off” for UNN, ask where it came from, because UNN itself has not released one.
One official figure from 2025/2026 is still useful. When UNN advertised unfilled places in October 2025 (its “advert” or shopping window), the list counted vacancies, not scores. Combined Social Sciences had 140 unfilled places on that list. A vacancy count is not a cut-off, but a programme with that many empty seats was clearly not oversubscribed that year, which is worth knowing if you are looking for a fallback inside the faculty.
UTME subject combination and O’level for Geography at UNN
Geography is the one subject you cannot leave out. The JAMB brochure’s UNN remark (shared with OAU) is “Geography and any two subjects”, alongside Use of English. UNN’s Faculty of Social Sciences page adds that the two other subjects should preferably be Arts or Social Science subjects.
| Requirement | Geography at UNN |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Geography, plus any two other subjects (preferably Arts or Social Science, such as Economics or Government) |
| O’level (UNN remark) | Five credits including English Language, Geography and any three other subjects, with at least a pass in Mathematics |
| Faculty page wording | The three other credits in Arts or Social Science subjects, and at least a pass in Mathematics |
| Faculty general rule | Five credits including English and a science subject, in not more than two sittings |
| Waiver | Holders of UNN’s Diploma in Environmental Protection are admitted without O’level Geography |
| Minimum UTME to apply | 160, with UNN as first choice |
Two points worth noticing. First, Mathematics only needs to be a pass for Geography at UNN, which helps candidates who scraped a D7. A credit is still better, because it keeps Economics and other courses open. Second, the faculty’s general rule asks for a science credit. Geography candidates often have Biology, Agricultural Science or Physics already, so this is easy to meet, but check your result before screening.
Because UNN lets the other two UTME subjects be “any” subjects, science students who wrote Geography with Physics and Chemistry are not shut out. The faculty page only says Arts or Social Science is preferred. If you are choosing now, Economics is the most useful partner for Geography because it also feeds into several jobs geographers do.
Direct Entry into Geography
UNN’s remark in the brochure and the faculty page list these DE routes, each on top of the UTME requirements:
- Two A’level passes in Geography and one of Economics, History, Agricultural Science, Geology, Literature in English, Biology, Chemistry or Physics
- An NCE at merit level in Geography
- An OND at merit level or better in Town Planning, Surveying, Environmental Management or Tropical Science
The faculty page adds that the NCE and OND routes also need four O’level passes including a credit in English and at least a pass in Mathematics. DE applications go through JAMB, and UNN’s 2026/2027 notice required A’level results to be verified by NIPEDS.
UNN screening for 2027/2028: what Geography candidates had to do
UNN’s 2026/2027 notice of 13 July 2026 described an online screening registration. It gave no test date, no venue and no exam format, so as far as the official notice goes there was no written post-UTME paper for Geography. Anyone selling “2026/2027 UNN post-UTME questions” for this course is selling something the notice never mentioned.
| Detail | 2026/2027 screening |
|---|---|
| Who could apply | Candidates who chose UNN first in the 2026 UTME and scored 160 or more |
| Opened and closed | Wednesday 15 July 2026 to midnight, Wednesday 5 August 2026 |
| Fees | ₦2,000 application fee plus ₦3,300 processing fee (₦5,300), paid through Remita |
| O’level upload | To JAMB CAPS and the UNN portal by 5 August 2026 |
| Awaiting results | Not eligible; your WAEC or NECO result had to be out |
| Age | Candidates under 16 by 30 September 2026 were told not to apply |
| Names | Names on WAEC or NECO results must match your JAMB record |
| Uploads (each under 100KB) | Birth certificate, LGA identification, testimonial, First School Leaving Certificate, JAMB result slip, O’level result(s) |
| Direct Entry | DE candidates with UNN as first choice also registered; A’level results had to be verified by NIPEDS |
The route was unn.edu.ng, then UNN Portal at the top right (unnportal.unn.edu.ng), then Prospective Students and the screening form. You entered your JAMB number, generated and paid the Remita invoice, came back to fill personal and O’level details (centre and exam numbers included), uploaded the documents, reviewed, submitted and printed the acknowledgement slip. Date of birth cannot be changed after you submit, so check it twice.
How UNN ranks Geography candidates (aggregate example)
UNN has not published its aggregate formula. Neither the 2026/2027 screening notice nor the 2025/2026 advert notice gives weights or grade points. The 2025/2026 advert notice did refer to a separate screening score with a 160 threshold, but it did not say how that score is worked out.
Several Nigerian education blogs describe the same method, and it is the one you will see most often: 60% of your UTME score plus 40% of an O’level score built from four relevant subjects, where A1 = 100, B2 = 90, B3 = 80, C4 = 70, C5 = 60 and C6 = 50. Treat the example below as an illustration of that blog method. It is not an official UNN formula.
| Step | Working |
|---|---|
| UTME score | 215 |
| O’level: English Language | C5 = 60 |
| O’level: Geography | B2 = 90 |
| O’level: Economics | C4 = 70 |
| O’level: Government | B3 = 80 |
| O’level total (out of 400) | 300 |
| 60% of UTME | 215 × 0.6 = 129 |
| 40% of O’level | 300 × 0.4 = 120 |
| Aggregate (out of 400) | 129 + 120 = 249 |
That Geography candidate lands on 249 out of 400. A strong Geography grade carries real weight: B2 instead of C6 adds 16 points on this method, the same as about 27 UTME marks. The English C5 is the weak spot here; moving it to B3 would add another 8. Blogs do not say which four subjects UNN uses, so take this as an illustration.
Merit, catchment and ELDS for Geography at UNN
UNN is a federal university, so it admits under the federal guideline widely reported as 45% merit, 35% catchment and 20% educationally less developed states (ELDS). That is national policy. UNN has not published its own split for Geography or any other course.
- Merit: the highest-ranked candidates from any state fill this list first, so it carries the highest cut-off.
- Catchment: UNN has not published a catchment list. It is generally understood to be the South-East states; confirm on JAMB CAPS or with the UNN admissions office before you plan around it.
- ELDS: a federal designation. UNN does not publish its own ELDS list, and I would ignore any blog that names states “for UNN”.
- State of origin: what counts is the state on your JAMB profile, backed by the LGA identification letter UNN asks for at screening.
Geography usually has fewer first-choice applicants than Economics or Political Science, partly because many candidates do not realise the course leads to GIS, planning and environmental work. Candidates who miss other Social Science courses are sometimes offered Geography if they wrote it in the UTME.
My advice (not a UNN figure): aim for 210 or more in the UTME with a credit or better in Geography and English for a solid chance on merit. From a catchment state, a score around 195 to 205 with good grades is a fair attempt. Under about 185, I would line up a second choice, for example Geography Education at a College of Education or a related polytechnic course in Surveying or Urban and Regional Planning.
Step by step: from JAMB profile to resuming for Geography at UNN
- Get or recover your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you need to register.
- Choose UNN first, and choose Geography by name: UNN screens only first-choice candidates. Getting the course right at registration saves you a change of course later.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result must show on your JAMB profile. For 2026/2027 UNN wanted it on CAPS and on the UNN portal by 5 August 2026. An accredited CBT centre can do the CAPS upload for you.
- Register for UNN screening: when the notice comes out (it came on 13 July in 2026), fill the form on unnportal.unn.edu.ng, pay through Remita and print your slip.
- Watch CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access My CAPS and Admission Status. On a phone, switch the browser to desktop view.
- Accept or reject: read the course name before you click. If CAPS shows a Transfer Approval, UNN is offering you a course other than Geography, and you must respond to it first.
- Print the JAMB admission letter and pay acceptance: pay UNN’s acceptance fee on the UNN portal. Blogs report ₦25,000, but I found no official 2026/2027 figure, so go by the amount the portal shows you.
- Clearance: follow the faculty’s clearance instructions with your originals. Nobody can “secure” a UNN place for you on CAPS for a fee.
Do not stop at CAPS
Accepting on JAMB CAPS and paying UNN’s acceptance fee are two separate steps, and you need both. JAMB’s 2026 policy gives candidates four weeks to accept an offer on CAPS before it can be lost. Accept, print the admission letter, pay on the UNN portal and keep every receipt.
UNN’s homepage already lists 2026/2027 notices for its primary admission list, the Direct Entry list and lists for candidates with disabilities and foreign candidates, and Myschool reported on 25 October 2026 that the list can be checked on CAPS. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status message.
Studying Geography at UNN
UNN’s Department of Geography sits in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Nsukka campus, and the B.Sc. runs for four years for UTME entrants. A Nigerian geography degree mixes human and physical geography with technical skills, and UNN’s own syllabus is in the department handbook. Typical areas include:
- Physical geography: geomorphology, climatology, hydrology, soils and biogeography
- Human geography: population, settlement, economic, transport and political geography
- Cartography, remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS)
- Environmental management, natural hazards and erosion (a live issue in the South-East)
- Regional planning and the geography of Nigeria and Africa
- Field courses, quantitative methods and a final-year project
| Where graduates work | Examples |
|---|---|
| Mapping and GIS | GIS analyst, remote sensing, mapping for telecoms, utilities and agencies |
| Environment | Environmental protection agencies, impact assessment consultancies, climate and erosion projects |
| Planning and population | Town and regional planning offices, the National Population Commission, statistics offices |
| Teaching | Secondary school Geography teaching (with a teaching qualification) |
| Further study | M.Sc. in GIS, environmental management, urban planning or climate studies |
Related UNN guides: Urban and Regional Planning (Enugu campus), Geoinformatics and Surveying and Economics. If you will rewrite the UTME, our guide to checking your JAMB result explains what to do with your score.
Common mistakes Geography applicants make
- No Geography in the UTME: it is the one compulsory subject besides English.
- No O’level credit in Geography: required, unless you hold UNN’s Diploma in Environmental Protection.
- Failing Mathematics outright: a pass is enough, but an F9 is not.
- No Science credit: the faculty’s general rule asks for one.
- Choosing UNN second: UNN screens first-choice candidates only.
UNN cut off mark for Geography: frequently asked questions
Is 200 enough for Geography in UNN? It clears the 160 screening minimum and equals UNN’s declared benchmark, so you can be screened. It is a little under the 210 I would aim for on merit, but with good grades in Geography and English it is a reasonable try, more so on the catchment list.
Do I need a credit in Mathematics for Geography in UNN? No. UNN’s remark asks for at least a pass in Mathematics, plus credits in English, Geography and three other subjects.
Can a science student study Geography at UNN? Yes. The UNN remark is Geography and any two subjects, so Geography with Physics and Chemistry or Biology is acceptable, although the faculty says Arts or Social Science subjects are preferred.
Can I get Direct Entry into UNN Geography with an OND? Yes, with an OND at merit level or better in Town Planning, Surveying, Environmental Management or Tropical Science, plus O’level credit in English and a pass in Mathematics.
Sources and updates
The 160 minimum, screening dates, fees, eligibility rules and portal steps come from the UNN Registrar’s notice 2026/2027 Screening Exercise for Admission of 13 July 2026. The 200 figure comes from Vanguard’s 11 May 2026 report of the JAMB policy meeting (via AllAfrica), and the national 150 minimum and four-week CAPS acceptance window from the News Agency of Nigeria report of the same day. The 2025/2026 figure of 160 and the vacancy count come from reprints of UNN’s October 2025 advert notice. UNN’s UTME, O’level and DE remarks for Geography come from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure (Geography page). The preferred subjects, the Diploma in Environmental Protection waiver, the NCE and OND conditions and the faculty’s five-credit rule come from the Faculty of Social Sciences admission requirements page. The 45/35/20 quota is national policy, not a UNN figure. The aggregate method is a blog method, not a published UNN formula, and the ₦25,000 acceptance fee is an unofficial report. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if UNN publishes departmental cut-offs.
