ASCETA Music Education Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 and Admission Requirements

ASCETA has not published a cut-off mark for NCE Music Education, and from 2026/2027 NCE candidates with four O’level credits no longer sit the UTME. See the JAMB NCE fees, O’level rules, subject pairings and CAPS steps for 2027/2028.

There is no published ASCETA Music Education cut off mark 2027/2028, and for the 2026/2027 session you did not need a UTME score at all to be considered. Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu (ASCETA) admits into NCE Music Education, and in May 2026 the Federal Government exempted NCE candidates with at least four O’level credit passes from the UTME. You still register with JAMB, and your admission still has to pass through JAMB CAPS. For Music Education, your credits in English and Music, plus whatever practical skill you bring, are what count.

2027/2028 update: ASCETA admission requirements and the JAMB entry rules for NCE usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the position on this page is what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. It comes from the latest official position (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 rules change anything, we will update this page.

ASCETA itself has not published a cut-off mark, a departmental minimum or a screening score for Music Education in any notice I could find. So this page sticks to what is official: the national rules from JAMB and the Federal Ministry of Education, what has been reported about ASCETA’s own admission advert, and the exact registration steps JAMB set out for NCE in 2026. Where I give advice, such as a safe O’level target, I label it as mine.

Is the course running this session? I could not confirm it. Music Education is on the ASCETA course list published on Wikipedia, but it is missing from the Myschool summary of the college’s 2025/2026 NCE advert, and I could not open ASCETA’s own website. Confirm with the college that it is admitting for Music Education before you pay for any form.

If you see a single “ASCETA cut-off mark” quoted for every course, check where it comes from. The only official figure, 100, was JAMB’s national floor for all colleges of education in 2025/2026, and I found no ASCETA document setting a separate figure for Music Education. For 2026/2027 the floor itself no longer applies to NCE candidates who use the no-UTME route, because there is no UTME score to compare.

Do you need JAMB or UTME for Music Education at ASCETA?

You need JAMB. You no longer need the UTME, provided you have at least four O’level credit passes. Three official statements set this out in 2026:

  • 11 May 2026: at JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said NCE candidates with a minimum of four credit passes will no longer sit the UTME, but must register with JAMB, and their results will be verified through CAPS before admission letters are issued.
  • June 2026: JAMB published its NCE registration guide, which also says no 100 level or 200 level (degree) admission into any college of education is allowed from the 2026/2027 session, including affiliated degree programmes. Everyone entering a college of education now enters through NCE.
  • 23 July 2026: JAMB announced that NCE registration without UTME had opened at Institutional Professional Registration Centres (IPRCs) in colleges of education and at JAMB Professional Registration Centres nationwide.

What the JAMB NCE registration costs

ItemAmountWho pays it
O’level verification code, one sitting₦1,500Every NCE applicant (paid to the exam body)
O’level verification code, two sittings₦2,000Applicants combining two results
JAMB NCE application fee₦3,500New NCE applicants who did not register for the 2026 UTME
CBT or IPRC registration charge₦700Every NCE applicant
Conversion of a 2026 UTME application to NCE₦700 onlyCandidates who already registered for the 2026 UTME

The 2026/2027 figures above are JAMB’s. The 2027/2028 guide may change them, so check the amount at the centre before you pay.

Safe target for Music Education at ASCETA (my advice)

This is my judgement as an admissions adviser. ASCETA has not published any ranking rule.

With no UTME score in the NCE route, the college can only compare candidates on their O’level results. So your grades in English and in the subjects you will teach carry the weight a UTME score used to carry. This is how I would read your chances:

Your O’level positionMy read for ASCETA Music Education
Fewer than four creditsNot eligible for the no-UTME route; resit WAEC, NECO or NABTEB first
Four credits, but no credit in MusicWeak; you lack the subject the course is built on
Five credits including English and Music, one or two sittingsMeets the usual college of education standard
Five or more credits with B grades in Music, one sittingStrong. This is what I would aim for.

If you are also writing the 2027 UTME because you want to keep a university option open, aim for at least 150, the 2026 national minimum for universities. That score is for the university option only. ASCETA’s NCE admission does not depend on it under the 2026 rules.

UTME subject combination and O’level requirements for ASCETA Music Education

RequirementMusic Education at ASCETA
UTMENot required for 2026/2027 NCE candidates with at least four credits
UTME subjects (only if you register for UTME)Use of English, Music and two other arts or social science subjects, such as Literature in English, Christian Religious Studies or Igbo (JAMB’s usual combination; confirm on the JAMB e-brochure)
O’level (ASCETA’s own rule)Not published by ASCETA in any source reached
O’level (usual college of education rule)Five credits at no more than two sittings, including English Language and Music where your school offered it and the subject you pair with Music; many colleges also want a credit in Mathematics (general NCCE practice; not confirmed on an ASCETA notice)
O’level (2026 federal exemption)At least four credit passes to be exempted from UTME (subjects not specified)
Exams accepted by JAMBWAEC, NECO, NABTEB and NBAIS results, verified with a code from the exam body
Awaiting resultsJAMB will not let a college propose a candidate marked Awaiting Results until the result is uploaded
Direct EntryNo 100 or 200 level entry into any college of education from 2026/2027 (JAMB). NCE is the only entry

Notice the gap between the two O’level rows. The federal exemption speaks of four credits, while colleges of education have usually asked for five. Until ASCETA publishes its own requirement, I would apply with five credits including English and the subjects you want to teach, so that neither rule can be used against you.

Subject combinations

Music is usually taken as a double major in colleges of education, with partners such as Christian Religious Studies, English, Igbo or Fine and Applied Arts. ASCETA has not published which pairings it runs. Ask the college, and also ask whether it holds a practical audition or aptitude test for Music; some colleges do, and ASCETA has not said either way.

How ASCETA screening and admission works for Music Education

ASCETA has not published a Post-UTME test, a screening fee or screening dates for 2026/2027 in any source I reached. Myschool reported on 4 January 2026 that the college had opened admission into its NCE programmes for 2025/2026. That summary listed departments under the Schools of General Education, Science Education and Vocational and Technical Education, and did not mention Music Education. The course appears on the ASCETA course list published on Wikipedia, which is not an official college document. Other blog posts claimed the college also sells forms for sandwich and part-time NCE. I could not see the college’s own notice, and its website, asceta.edu.ng, did not open when I checked, so treat any form price you see online as unconfirmed.

What is official is JAMB’s part. Under its 2026 NCE guide, the college’s Admission Officer proposes candidates on CAPS, the Provost recommends them, and JAMB checks each candidate’s O’level through the verification code against the exam body’s own records before the offer appears on CAPS.

Worked example for a Music Education applicant (illustrative)

ASCETA has not published an aggregate formula, so there is nothing to multiply. What you can do is test yourself against both O’level rules and JAMB’s process. This example is illustrative.

Daniel has one WAEC sitting: English C5, Music B3, Mathematics C6, Christian Religious Studies B2, Literature in English C6, Biology D7 and Civic Education C4. He plays the keyboard in church and wants Music/CRS.

  1. Credit count: English, Music, Mathematics, CRS, Literature and Civic Education are credits. Six credits clears the four-credit federal rule.
  2. Five-credit check: English and Mathematics included, in one sitting.
  3. Subject check: B3 in Music and B2 in CRS cover both sides of his pairing, and his keyboard skill will help in practicals.
  4. Process: a one-sitting WAEC verification code (₦1,500), IPRC registration with ASCETA as first choice (₦3,500 plus ₦700), then CAPS.

Favour’s school did not offer Music, but she sings in a choir and reads sol-fa. She has English C5, Mathematics C6, CRS B3, Literature C4 and Government C6, which is five credits. She meets both O’level counts, but without a Music result her admission depends on whether ASCETA accepts candidates with practical skill only. That rule is not published, so she should ask the college before she registers.

Your chances of admission into Music Education at ASCETA

ASCETA does not publish applicant numbers for Music Education, and I could not confirm the course is admitting this session. In my experience, Music draws few applicants at colleges of education, partly because few secondary schools teach it to WAEC level. In my judgement, a candidate with credits in English and Music, or clear practical ability, plus five credits overall, has a good chance once the course is confirmed.

  • Make ASCETA your first choice. JAMB sends each NCE registration to the first-choice college.
  • Get the verification code right. CAPS compares it with the exam body’s record, and a mismatch stops the process.
  • Do not register as Awaiting Results unless you must. You cannot be proposed until the result is uploaded.
  • Keep checking CAPS. The offer appears there, and it is not valid until you accept it.

How to apply for Music Education at ASCETA, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Buy your O’level verification code: from WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or NBAIS. JAMB lists ₦1,500 for one sitting and ₦2,000 for two. Note your exam year, exam number and subjects.
  3. Register for NCE at a JAMB centre or IPRC: log in to your e-Facility profile with the profile code, select NCE registration, pay ₦3,500 plus the ₦700 centre charge, and choose ASCETA as your first choice with Music Education. Your biometrics are captured and you get a registration slip.
  4. Upload your O’level: enter your results and the verification code at the centre. These are the results CAPS will check.
  5. Already wrote the 2026 UTME? If a college of education was your first choice, JAMB migrates your application. You update your profile with the verification code and pay ₦700 only.
  6. Complete ASCETA’s own form if the college asks for one: ASCETA has not published its 2026/2027 portal or form price in any source I reached. Confirm on asceta.edu.ng or at the admissions office in Arochukwu before paying anyone.
  7. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. Accept the offer and print your JAMB admission letter. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  8. Pay the acceptance fee and register: ASCETA has not published its acceptance or school fees in any source I reached. Pay only through the channel the college gives on its admission letter or portal.

Warning

The Federal Government has said that any admission done outside JAMB CAPS is illegal and will not be recognised. If someone offers you an ASCETA NCE place that does not show on CAPS, or asks for money to “process” one, walk away.

Studying NCE Music Education at ASCETA

ASCETA is a state-owned college of education in Arochukwu, Abia State, founded in 1993. ASCETA has not said which school runs Music Education in any source I reached; it appears on the course list published on Wikipedia, but not in the Myschool summary of the 2025/2026 advert. I have not given it a school name here for that reason. The Nigeria Certificate in Education normally takes three years full time. ASCETA has not stated the duration on any page I reached.

What you study

  • Theory and history: rudiments and theory of music, harmony, sight singing, aural training, and the history of Western and African music.
  • Practical music: keyboard, voice and at least one other instrument, plus ensemble and choir work.
  • African and Nigerian music: traditional instruments, Igbo and other Nigerian music forms, and composition for school and church use.
  • Education courses: educational psychology, curriculum studies and methods of teaching Music and Cultural and Creative Arts.
  • Teaching practice: supervised teaching in a school, usually in the final year.

Accreditation

NCE programmes are regulated by the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE). I did not confirm the NCCE accreditation status of ASCETA’s Music Education programme, so I am not claiming it. Ask the college for its current NCCE accreditation status before you accept an offer, and ask again if you are told a course is new.

Careers and further study

  • Teaching: Music and Cultural and Creative Arts in primary and junior secondary schools, and Music at senior level where schools offer it; the NCE is Nigeria’s minimum teaching qualification.
  • Registration: with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
  • Other work: church music direction, choir training, private music lessons, studio and session work, and event performance.
  • Degree later: NCE holders can go on to a B.Ed or B.Sc (Ed) at a university. ASCETA was affiliated to Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike and Abia State University for degree programmes, but JAMB stopped new affiliated degree admissions into colleges of education from 2026/2027, so plan to take the degree at a university.

If you are switching your course to Music Education, read JAMB change of course. If you are changing your first choice to ASCETA, read JAMB change of institution.

Mistakes that cost Music Education applicants an ASCETA place

  • Assuming church experience replaces every requirement: it helps in practicals, but you still need five solid O’level credits including English.
  • Paying before confirming the course is running: Music is on the Wikipedia course list but not in the 2025/2026 advert summary I found.
  • Waiting for a UTME score: under the 2026 rules NCE candidates with four credits do not need one, and waiting can mean missing the college’s admission window.
  • Paying for a form from an unverified link: ASCETA has not published its portal in any source I reached. Confirm with the college first.
  • Accepting on CAPS and doing nothing else: the acceptance fee and registration at the college are separate steps.

ASCETA Music Education cut off mark: frequently asked questions

Does ASCETA offer Music Education? Music is on ASCETA’s course list published on Wikipedia, but not in the Myschool summary of the 2025/2026 NCE advert. Confirm with the college that it is admitting this session before you pay for a form.

What is the cut-off mark for Music Education in ASCETA? ASCETA has not published one. For 2026/2027 NCE candidates with at least four O’level credits were exempted from the UTME; the 2025/2026 national minimum for colleges of education was 100.

Can I study Music at ASCETA without O’level Music? ASCETA has not published a rule on this. Some colleges accept candidates who show practical skill at an audition, so ask the college before you register.

Does ASCETA hold an audition for Music Education? I found no published audition or aptitude test for ASCETA Music. Some colleges of education run one, so ask the college and prepare a short piece on your instrument or voice in case.

Sources and updates

The UTME exemption for NCE candidates with four credit passes, the JAMB registration and CAPS requirement and the warning that admissions outside CAPS are illegal come from the News Agency of Nigeria report of 11 May 2026 on the Minister of Education’s announcement at JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting, also reported by TheNigeriaLawyer the same day. The fees, verification code, IPRC registration, CAPS proposal and recommendation, Awaiting Results rule, 2026 UTME conversion and the end of 100 and 200 level and affiliated admissions into colleges of education come from JAMB’s 2026 NCE and ND registration guide. The 23 July 2026 opening of NCE registration is from Nairametrics. The 2025/2026 national minimum of 100 for colleges of education is from Nairametrics, 8 July 2025. ASCETA’s 2025/2026 NCE advert and school list are from Myschool News (4 January 2026); the founding year, location, course list and university affiliations are from Wikipedia. UTME subjects are JAMB’s usual combination for Music Education and the five-credit rule is general college of education practice; neither was confirmed on an ASCETA notice. ASCETA’s own cut-off, screening details and fees were not published in any source reached. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated when ASCETA or JAMB publishes the 2027/2028 position.
