These are 63 university jobs abroad that are open now, from vice-chancellor and dean posts to lectureships, postdocs and salaried PhD positions, at universities in the UK, Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, Africa and North America. Each one links to a full guide on this site that covers the duties, who the university wants, the documents to send, the pay where it is published, and what the advert says about visas. The table for each region gives the deadline exactly as stated in that guide.
The list includes 12 leadership roles, 29 professor and lecturer posts, 12 postdoctoral jobs and 10 funded PhD positions. All were checked against the original adverts, and the deadlines below were current on 29 October 2026. Where a deadline passes, the role is marked Closed rather than moved to a later date, because a vacancy does not reopen on a fixed cycle the way a scholarship does.
Closing soon
Several roles close in the first ten days of November 2026, including Bournemouth (1 November), Manchester and Sydney’s Deputy Dean (4 November), MBZUAI’s precision medicine postdoc (5 November) and the London leadership roles at City St George’s and SOAS (9 November). Check the exact closing time in each guide, as some close in the morning UK time.

University jobs in the UK (14 roles)
The UK list is heavy on senior leadership, which UK universities usually fill through executive search firms. Most of these adverts do not publish a salary. The faculty and research posts do: Durham’s Assistant Professor in International Political Economy pays £48,337 to £57,666 a year, its carbon capture postdoc pays £39,560 to £46,970, and Southampton’s Senior Research Fellow in AI for genomic medicine pays £46,970 to £49,798.

Visa sponsorship is the question to settle first in the UK. Several adverts here, including Surrey’s and Southampton’s, say nothing about it, so our guides recommend asking the HR contact before you invest in a long application. The University of East London PhD pays a stipend of £22,780 a year with tuition covered at the home rate, so check how fees would work for an international candidate.
University jobs in Europe (9 roles)
Europe stands out for salaried PhD positions. In Finland, Austria and the Czech Republic a doctoral researcher is an employee with a salary and social insurance, not a student living on a grant. The University of Helsinki posts pay roughly €2,600 to €3,900 a month depending on the project, and the University of Vienna’s predoctoral post pays €3,776.10 gross a month on a full-time basis for a 30-hour post. Masaryk University’s ERC-funded PhD starts at CZK 30,000 net a month, and its Welcome Office helps international hires with visas and relocation.

Read the visa line carefully in Australia. Sydney’s lecturer posts in immunology and bacteriology, cancer and secondary science education say visa sponsorship is not available and require unrestricted Australian work rights, while Sydney’s Deputy Dean, Bosch Chair and radiology chair adverts say sponsorship and relocation help will be provided if needed. In China, XJTLU says it sponsors the Chinese work visa and residence permit for its dean post. Hong Kong’s universities mostly describe pay only as competitive, and PolyU’s 90 Scholars scheme stays open until 31 December 2027.
University jobs in Africa (6 roles)
All six African posts are at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Morocco, mostly at its Benguerir campus. UM6P does not publish salaries for these posts, but its faculty adverts list a benefits package that includes housing, tuition fees, insurance, retirement provision and a research budget. Most adverts say nothing about visas or work permits, so ask the recruiting team before you apply.

University jobs in North America (2 roles)
Both North American posts are tenure-stream nursing faculty roles at the University of Toronto’s Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing. Unusually, both publish pay: CAD 130,000 to 150,000 a year for the Assistant Professor post and CAD 150,000 to 180,000 for the Associate Professor post, with room to negotiate for exceptional candidates.

How to apply for academic jobs abroad from Africa
Applying for a university post overseas from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or anywhere in Africa follows the same rules as applying from Europe, but a few practical points decide whether your application is read at all. This is the order I would work in:
- Settle the visa question first: read the advert for the words “visa sponsorship”. Where it says sponsorship is not available, as on several Sydney lecturer posts, an applicant without local work rights will not be appointed however strong the file. Where it says nothing, email HR and ask before you write anything.
- Match the advert’s criteria line by line: UK and Australian universities shortlist against published essential and desirable criteria. Use the same headings in your cover letter or supporting statement and give one piece of evidence for each.
- Prepare the standard academic file: most faculty adverts here ask for a cover letter, a CV with publications, a research statement, a teaching statement and the names of referees. Keep a master version of each and tailor it per post.
- Write a research statement that fits the department: name the problem you work on, your best results, your plan for the next three to five years, the grants you would apply for, and the colleagues you would work with there.
- Brief your referees early: at some universities, such as Toronto, referees must upload their letters by the same deadline as your application, so give them the date and the link in good time.
- Convert your qualifications clearly: explain grading scales and class of degree in one line, and give the length and level of each post you have held.
- Check the closing time and time zone: SOAS closes at 9:00am GMT, AUT at 11:55pm Auckland time and Sydney at 11:59pm Sydney time. Submitting a day early avoids the time-zone trap.
For doctoral posts, remember that a salaried PhD in Finland or Austria is a job application, so treat it like one: a focused motivation letter, a research plan that fits the project, and referees who can speak to your research ability.
Common mistakes in international academic applications
- Sending the same cover letter everywhere: panels can tell, and the criteria differ between countries and posts.
- Ignoring the teaching side: education-focused lecturer posts, such as Sydney’s, weigh teaching evidence heavily.
- Skipping the salary and visa homework: know what the post pays and whether you can legally take it before you invest days in the application.
- Applying on the last day: portals slow down near deadlines, and some posts review applications as they arrive.
- Overlooking rolling review: NYUAD, HKU and Masaryk review on a rolling basis or from an earlier date, so an early application can count for more.
FAQs on university jobs abroad
Which universities abroad sponsor visas for academic staff?
Among the posts here, Sydney’s Deputy Dean, Bosch Chair and radiology chair adverts offer sponsorship if needed, XJTLU sponsors the Chinese work visa for its dean post, and Masaryk helps international hires through its Welcome Office. Many other adverts are silent, so ask HR before you apply.
Can I get a paid PhD position abroad?
Yes. The University of Helsinki, University of Vienna and Masaryk University posts in this list are salaried doctoral jobs, and Swinburne and the University of East London offer funded PhD scholarships with a stipend.
How much do lecturers earn abroad?
It depends on the country and grade. Sydney’s Level B lecturer posts start at AUD 132,533 plus 17% superannuation, Durham’s Assistant Professor post pays £48,337 to £57,666, and Toronto’s Assistant Professor in Nursing post pays CAD 130,000 to 150,000.
Where can I find university jobs abroad for Africans?
Every role in this list is open to international applicants unless the advert limits work rights. Start with posts that offer visa sponsorship or relocation help, such as the Sydney chairs, XJTLU and the Abu Dhabi universities, and with UM6P in Morocco.
Sources and updates
Each role, salary, visa statement and deadline comes from our individual job guides, which were written from the original adverts on Times Higher Education Unijobs and the universities’ own career pages and checked in October 2026. Deadlines are shown as each guide states them, in the time zone of the advert where given; where a guide noted a conflict, such as Manchester’s two closing dates, the table repeats it. Roles whose deadline has passed are marked Closed. We add new university jobs to this list as we publish their guides.
