Auckland University of Technology (AUT) is hiring a Lecturer in Finance on a teaching path, based at its City Campus in central Auckland, New Zealand. The AUT Lecturer in Finance job pays NZD 88,000 to 94,000 depending on level, skills and experience. It is a full-time, fixed-term post from 1 February 2027 to 26 November 2027, covering a staff member on parental leave. Applications close on 11 November 2026 at 11:55pm.
You will teach investments and corporate finance to classes of around 150 students, so the job suits someone with a PhD (or close to finishing one) who already has lecturing or course coordination experience. The advert does not mention visa sponsorship. Below are the duties, the requirements, the documents AUT wants, and how to write a teaching-focused application that gets past the first sift.

About AUT and the Business School
AUT is one of New Zealand’s eight universities and the second largest in Auckland. Its Business School holds both AACSB and EQUIS accreditation, which the advert mentions and which matters for your CV: teaching in a double-accredited school is a recognised credential if you later apply elsewhere. The finance group sits in the Department of Economics and Finance.

Living in Auckland
Auckland is New Zealand’s largest and most expensive city, and rent will be your biggest cost. The City Campus is in the central business district, so living close to it costs more than living further out and commuting by bus or train. A salary of NZD 88,000 to 94,000 is livable for a single person or couple, but a family on one income will feel housing costs. Compare rents on local listing sites before you commit.
What the AUT finance lecturer does
- Teach: deliver lectures and workshops in investments and corporate finance, plus other courses the department assigns.
- Coordinate courses: organise the course, including materials and the teaching team.
- Assess: set and mark assessments, and answer student questions.
- Manage large classes: around 150 students per class.
- Use digital tools: use digital resources to support learning.
This is a teaching path role, which at AUT means the job is mainly teaching. The advert says AUT wants someone who wants to be a teaching-focused academic and keeps up their professional currency. It does not ask for a research programme.
The advert does not name who the post reports to. In practice you would answer to the Head of Department, Professor Bart Frijns, who is also the contact for academic questions.
Requirements
| Type | What the advert asks for |
|---|---|
| Essential | A PhD, or near completion of one |
| Essential | Previous teaching experience in workshops, lectures or course coordination |
| Essential | Ability to coordinate large classes of about 100 to 150 students |
| Essential | A wish to be a teaching-focused academic who keeps professional currency |
| Essential | Commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, and support for AUT’s Te Aronui journey |
Te Aronui is an AUT framework set out in a document linked from the advert. Read it before you write, and say in your letter how your teaching would support the students it is aimed at. New Zealand universities weigh commitments to Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) and to Māori and Pacific students in hiring, so a generic diversity line won’t do.
Salary and terms
The advert gives NZD 88,000 to 94,000. Where you land in that band depends on your level, skills and experience. For a contract of about ten months, you would be paid pro rata for the period worked. AUT’s staff benefits page lists the wider benefits; the advert does not say how they apply to fixed-term staff.
The contract ends on 26 November 2027. Fixed-term parental leave cover sometimes leads to further work, but nothing in the advert promises an extension, so plan as if it ends.
Visa sponsorship
The advert does not mention visa sponsorship. If you are not a New Zealand citizen or resident and don’t hold an open work visa, ask AUT HR before you apply whether they would support a work visa for a fixed-term role of this length. Moving countries for a ten-month contract is a real risk, so get a clear answer first.
How to apply for the AUT Lecturer in Finance job
- Prepare a full academic CV: degrees, teaching history with course names and class sizes, and any publications.
- Write a cover letter: cover your motivation, your teaching experience and your teaching philosophy. AUT names all three.
- Gather student evaluations: the advert asks for evidence of satisfactory student evaluations.
- Apply online: use the apply link on the Times Higher Education advert, which goes to AUT’s careers site. Quote reference 96820 if asked.
- Ask questions early: academic questions go to Professor Bart Frijns (bart.frijns@aut.ac.nz); recruitment questions go through AUT’s HR enquiry form or 09 921 9499.
- Submit before 11:55pm on 11 November 2026.
New Zealand time
The deadline is 11:55pm on 11 November 2026, which we read as New Zealand time (NZDT, GMT+13). That is 10:55am GMT on 11 November, or 11:55am in Lagos. Applicants in Europe and Africa effectively have only the morning of 11 November.
How to write a teaching-focused cover letter
For a teaching path job, the cover letter is where you win or lose. Aim for two pages.
- Opening: who you are, your PhD status and why this role.
- Teaching experience: the finance courses you have taught, the level, class size and your role (lecturer, tutor or coordinator).
- Large-class evidence: a specific example of running a class of 100 or more, including how you handled assessment and student questions.
- Teaching philosophy: two or three principles with one example each, such as how you teach discounted cash flow to students who fear maths.
- Digital teaching: the tools you use, such as a learning management system, online quizzes or recorded workshops.
- Te Aronui and inclusion: how you support a diverse class.
- Professional currency: how you keep up with markets, such as industry certifications, practitioner work or applied projects.
Sample opening line, for illustration only: “I am completing a PhD in empirical asset pricing and have coordinated a 140-student undergraduate investments course for two semesters, and I would like to bring that experience to AUT’s teaching path in finance.” Use your own numbers.
Student evaluations
Give the course, year, number of respondents and your score with the scale. If your scores improved over time, show the trend; a committee reads that as evidence you respond to feedback.
Is a fixed-term teaching path job worth it?
It depends on where you are in your career. For a PhD finishing in 2026, ten months of lecturing in a double-accredited business school gives you exactly what the next application needs: course coordination, large-class teaching and a reference from a head of department. Many permanent lecturer adverts ask for that experience, and this job hands it to you.
The downside is the short horizon. You start in February and would need to job-hunt again from around the middle of 2027. A research publication record also won’t grow much while you carry a full teaching load. If you want a research-track career, use the year to finish papers from your PhD in your own time, and keep it realistic.
For someone already living in Auckland, the decision is easier. The pay band is fixed and published, the work is clearly defined, and the department is a known quantity once you are in it. For someone overseas, weigh the move against the length of the contract and the visa answer from AUT.
What the selection process looks like
The advert doesn’t publish the stages. A fixed-term teaching post starting in February usually moves fast: a shortlist soon after the closing date, an interview panel (often online for overseas candidates) and possibly a short teaching demonstration. Reference checks follow. Treat this as general practice, not AUT’s stated process.
Common mistakes
- Writing a research-heavy letter for a teaching path job.
- Leaving out student evaluations, which the advert asks for.
- Ignoring Te Aronui. A line or two that shows you’ve read it is expected.
- Not checking visa support before applying from abroad.
- Missing the deadline because of the time difference.
Who should apply and who shouldn’t
Apply if you hold or are close to a PhD in finance, have taught investments or corporate finance, and are comfortable with large classes. It suits someone already in New Zealand, or someone who wants an entry into New Zealand academia and can move for a short contract.
Don’t apply if you want a research-track job or a permanent post; this is neither. If you need a work visa and AUT won’t support it for a fixed-term role, the numbers may not work. For study routes into New Zealand, see our guide to scholarships in New Zealand without IELTS.
