Apply early
PolyU begins reviewing applications on 20 November 2026 and fills the post when it finds the right person. The 21 March 2027 closing date is the latest you can apply, but a strong candidate who applies in November may already be in interviews by then.
What CNERC-Rail is and why it matters for this job
CNERC-Rail (Hong Kong Branch) is PolyU’s branch of the National Rail Transit Electrification and Automation Engineering Technology Research Center. PolyU’s centre page says it was set up in 2015 with approval from China’s Ministry of Science and Technology. Its mission is to develop monitoring technologies for rail transit using smart materials and big data analysis, drawing on PolyU’s work in sensing, smart materials and data-driven analysis.
That is why this post is so specific. PolyU wants someone who will build the centre’s next generation of research, and the advert mentions possible future leadership as Director or Associate Director of CNERC-Rail. If you are applying at Professor level, treat the centre’s growth as part of your job description.
The five expertise areas PolyU lists
You need expertise in one or more of these:
| Area | What the advert asks for |
|---|---|
| Sensing | High-sensitivity flexible sensors for rail transit applications |
| Energy harvesting | Energy harvesting devices and acoustic-electric conversion metamaterials |
| Drag and noise | Surface metamaterials and metastructures for drag reduction and aeroacoustic noise reduction |
| Energy storage | Carbon-cement batteries and supercapacitors |
| Operation and maintenance | Intelligent operation and maintenance systems for rail infrastructure and networks |
Notice how much of this list is materials science and physics, not classic railway civil engineering. A metamaterials researcher who has never worked on rail can apply if they can show how their work transfers to trains, tracks and stations. Make that link explicit in your research statement.
Duties of the role
- Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in railway and related subjects, and leading the development of new postgraduate programmes.
- Carrying out high-impact research and winning competitive funding, including mission-driven projects such as prototypes and digital-twin platforms.
- Supervising student projects and MSc and PhD dissertations.
- Working with industry, government and international partners, and contributing to knowledge transfer.
- Taking on academic and administrative duties at centre, department and university level.
Requirements by rank
All ranks need a PhD in a relevant engineering, materials or data science discipline, plus:
- Expertise in at least one of the five areas above.
- A strong research record.
- Evidence of teaching excellence.
- Potential to win research funding, and a professional network.
- Strong English communication skills.
Professor applicants also need international research leadership and experience leading teams. PolyU does not split the criteria further, so the rank you are offered depends on your record. If you are a mid-career researcher, apply and let the panel place you; you do not have to pick one rank.
Salary, start-up grants and terms of service
The advert gives no salary figure. PolyU publishes general terms for academic appointments, which give context on the package. These are general terms, not the advertised offer for this post, and PolyU says the document is for reference only.
| Term | What PolyU’s general terms say |
|---|---|
| Assistant Professor contract | Initial 3-year gratuity-bearing contract, renewable for another 3 years; conversion to regular terms is linked to promotion to Associate Professor |
| Associate Professor | Normally a 3-year gratuity-bearing contract or regular terms |
| Professor | Normally regular terms |
| Gratuity (contract terms) | Contract-end gratuity plus University MPF contributions equal 15% of total basic salary |
| Retirement (regular terms) | Staff contribute 5% and the University 15% of monthly basic salary |
| Housing | Non-accountable housing allowance; first-year accommodation at University House or nearby, subject to availability |
| Annual leave | 22 working days, rising to 26 after 10 years |
| Medical and dental | Cover for staff, eligible spouse and dependent children |
| Relocation | Passage and relocation subsidy for appointees coming from outside Hong Kong |
On top of that, this advert adds the start-up grant. For a Professor it is HKD 5 million or more, covering two PhD students, equipment and staff, and for an Associate or Assistant Professor it is HKD 3 million or more, both over an initial five years. That is a strong research package, so plan in your statement how you would spend it.
Visa sponsorship
The advert does not mention visas or right to work. If you are not a Hong Kong permanent resident, ask PolyU’s Human Resources Office (hrstaff@polyu.edu.hk, listed in its general terms) how it handles employment visas for non-local appointees before you reach offer stage.
How to apply for the PolyU railway engineering professor job

- Prepare your documents: the advert does not list them. Have a full CV with publications and grants, a research statement, a teaching statement and referee details ready; the online form will show what is required.
- Choose your expertise area: state clearly which of the five areas you cover.
- Submit early: review starts on 20 November 2026.
- Keep your record: save the confirmation and quote the reference in any email.
About PolyU and Hong Kong
PolyU is a public university in Hung Hom, Kowloon, and it marks its 90th anniversary in 2027. Its recent rankings, from its own releases:
| Ranking | Edition | PolyU’s position |
|---|---|---|
| QS World University Rankings | 2027 (published 18 June 2026) | 50th, its highest ever |
| THE World University Rankings | 2027 (published 30 September 2026) | 79th |
The advert says the CEE department has about 80 faculty members and about 40 technical and administrative staff, and that it is ranked first in the world in Transportation Science and Technology. PolyU has seven faculties and three independent schools.
Hong Kong is expensive, mostly because of rent. PolyU’s housing allowance and first-year accommodation help, so ask HR for the allowance figure at your rank when you discuss the offer. The salaries tax rates in Hong Kong are low compared with most of Europe, which offsets some of the housing cost.
How to write the application
The research statement
Keep it to about three to four pages and structure it around the centre’s needs:
- Your area: which of the five areas you work in, and your main results so far.
- Rail application: how your work solves a rail problem, such as track monitoring, noise or energy use.
- Five-year plan: two or three projects, with the funding schemes you would target.
- Use of the start-up grant: students, equipment and staff.
- Partnerships: industry and government partners you would bring in.
A sample opening, for illustration only: “My group develops flexible strain sensors that survive outdoor vibration and heat, and over the next five years I want to turn them into a low-cost monitoring layer for Hong Kong’s rail tracks and viaducts.”
The teaching statement
Name the courses you could teach on day one and one postgraduate programme you could help design. PolyU lists new postgraduate programme development as a duty, so a concrete idea counts.
What the selection process looks like
PolyU’s advert does not give a timetable. Faculty hiring in Hong Kong usually involves a department shortlist, a seminar and interviews with the department and senior management, and referee reports. Because review runs on a rolling basis, you could be contacted any time after 20 November 2026.
Common mistakes
- Applying with a general civil engineering profile and no link to the five listed areas.
- Leaving out funding history. PolyU wants proof you can win competitive grants.
- Treating the closing date as the target. Review starts months earlier.
- Writing a research plan that ignores the start-up grant and CNERC-Rail.
- Forgetting the teaching statement. Teaching excellence is listed for all ranks.
Who should apply and who shouldn’t
Apply if you hold a PhD and work on sensing, energy harvesting, metamaterials, structural energy storage or rail asset maintenance, and you can show grant income and good publications. Senior researchers who could lead a national-level centre fit the Professor level.
I would not apply if your work has no realistic link to rail systems, or if you only want a research post with no teaching or administrative load.
