Hainan Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences (BiUH) in China is recruiting a Lecturer, Associate Professor or Professor in Computer Science. The post is permanent and can be full or part time. It is based in the Yangpu Economic Zone of Danzhou, on the island province of Hainan. You would teach undergraduate computer science in English, supervise bachelor’s and master’s theses and do applied research. Applications for the Hainan Bielefeld University lecturer in computer science job close on 7 January 2027, and the expected start is the Spring 2027 semester in February.
The advert offers a “competitive salary in the market” plus a 13th-month salary, social insurance, a housing provident fund, a transitional apartment and 25 days of annual leave. You apply by email with one combined PDF. The minimum qualification is a master’s degree, which makes this one of the few university teaching posts abroad open to people without a PhD. Below I cover the role, the requirements, the exact apply steps, how to write the cover letter to the President, and how this compares with other computer science jobs open now.

About Hainan Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences
The advert describes BiUH as the first international independent university in the Hainan Free Trade Port. As the name shows, it takes its model from Bielefeld in Germany, where universities of applied sciences focus on practice-based degrees linked to industry. BiUH calls its approach a “Work-Integrated University-Industry Collaborative Talent Training Model”. In plain terms, students combine study with structured work in partner companies.
Teaching is in English, with German language courses, and classes are small. Programmes named in the advert include digital technologies, computer science, software engineering, business information systems, logistics, industrial and electrical engineering, mechatronics and international management.
The advert cites no rankings, and BiUH is a young university, so judge it on the contract, the teaching load and the people you meet at interview.
Why Hainan
Hainan is China’s southernmost province, a tropical island developing as a free trade port with its own tax and investment rules. Yangpu, on the island’s north-west coast, is one of the port’s main economic zones, with industry and shipping. Danzhou is a smaller city than the provincial capital Haikou, so living costs are lower than in Beijing, Shanghai or Shenzhen. Expect a quieter life than in a big Chinese city.
What you will teach
The advert names these undergraduate subjects:
- Algorithms and data structures
- Object-oriented programming with Python (Programming II)
- Deep learning
- Internet security
- Theory of computation
- Computer architecture and organisation
You do not need to cover all six. Pick the ones you can teach from the first week and say so clearly in your letter.
Responsibilities
- Teach and assess: deliver and examine undergraduate courses in the areas above.
2. Build materials: develop course content, exercises, labs, exams and curricula to international standards.
3. Make it practical: bring programming projects, problem-solving and real-world applications into class, in line with the applied model.
4. Supervise: guide bachelor’s and master’s theses, student projects and software assignments.
5. Research: carry out applied research and publish in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
6. Collaborate: work with colleagues on interdisciplinary teaching and research.
The advert does not name a reporting line. At a small university, lecturers usually report to a programme director or dean.
Requirements
The advert lists one set of requirements for all three ranks:
- Degree: a master’s degree or above in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Security, Mathematics or a closely related field.
- Teaching: proven ability to teach computer science at undergraduate or graduate level.
- Environment: ability to work in an international, multicultural team.
- Language: excellent English. Chinese is an advantage.
The advert does not set separate criteria for each rank. In practice, a master’s holder with teaching experience fits Lecturer. Associate Professor and Professor normally need a PhD and a publication record, and the advert asks Professor applicants to send professorship certification if they have it. Ask at interview how BiUH decides rank, because it affects pay.
Salary and benefits
BiUH gives no figure, only “competitive salary in the market” plus a 13th-month salary. The named benefits are:
| Benefit | What the advert says |
|---|---|
| 13th-month salary | Yes |
| Allowances | Travel, phone and high-temperature allowances, among others |
| Insurance | China’s five types of social insurance, a housing provident fund and commercial insurance |
| Housing | Transitional apartment arrangements |
| Annual leave | 25 days, plus 13 statutory holiday days |
| Other leave | Paid sick, marriage, maternity and paternity leave, plus parental leave |
“Transitional apartment” suggests short-term housing when you arrive, not permanent free housing. Ask how long it lasts.
Visa and work permit
The advert says nothing about visas. Foreign teachers in China need a work permit and a residence permit, and the employer normally starts the work permit process. Chinese rules generally ask foreign teachers for a degree, relevant work experience, a criminal record check and a health check, and documents often need authentication. Ask BiUH’s recruitment team which documents they need from you and whether they cover the costs, and start early, because authentication can take weeks.
How to apply for the BiUH computer science job
- Prepare your documents: a current English CV with a full publication list; a cover letter addressed to the President of BiUH; two reference letters; teaching qualification documents if you have them; professorship certification if you have it; and your degree certificates.
2. Merge into one PDF: combine everything into a single file.
3. Name the file correctly: the advert asks for the position followed by your name, for example “Lecturer in Computer Science – Amina Bello”.
4. Email it: send the PDF to recruitment@hibiuh.edu.cn with the position in the subject line.
5. Or use the THE form: the THE listing also has an application form (CV up to 1MB in .doc, .docx, .pdf or .rtf). Email is the route the advert describes in detail, so I would use email and keep the form as a back-up.
6. Apply before 7 January 2027: with a February start, BiUH will want to interview in December and January.
Note that the advert asks for reference letters with the application, not referee names. Request them now.
How to write the cover letter to the President
- Opening: the post and rank you want, your highest degree and current role, in two sentences.
2. Teaching fit: name the subjects from the advert you can teach and where you have taught them before.
3. Applied teaching: one example of a project-based course, industry link or lab you designed. This is what an applied sciences university wants most.
4. Research: your area and recent output, kept short.
5. International work: experience teaching students from other countries, and any Chinese or German language skills.
6. Close: your availability for a February 2027 start.
A sample opening, for illustration only: “I am applying for the post of Lecturer in Computer Science, with a master’s degree in software engineering and five years teaching algorithms and Python programming to undergraduates in English.”
What happens after you apply
BiUH does not publish its timetable. Expect a screening of files, then one or two video interviews, possibly with a trial lecture. After an offer comes the work permit process, which runs in parallel with contract signing. A February start leaves little time, so answer emails quickly.
Common mistakes
- Sending several attachments: the advert asks for one PDF. Merge them.
- Wrong file name: name the PDF with the position and then your name.
- Missing reference letters: BiUH wants the letters themselves with the application.
- Ignoring the applied focus: a purely theoretical research profile with no teaching examples will struggle.
- Leaving visa documents late: degree authentication and police checks take time.
Who should apply and who shouldn’t
You should apply if you have at least a master’s degree in computer science or a related field, real undergraduate teaching experience in English, and you enjoy practical, project-based teaching. Graduates from Nigeria, India, Pakistan, the Philippines and elsewhere who have taught in English-medium universities can compete for the Lecturer rank. PhD holders with publications should apply for Associate Professor or above.
You probably shouldn’t apply if you want a research-intensive post with a light teaching load, or if you have no teaching experience at all. If you are still building your profile, a funded PhD may be the better step. See our guide to scholarships for African students, or the Asian options in Taiwan scholarships for international students.

Sources and updates
I checked this post on 29 October 2026 against the Times Higher Education Unijobs listing, which links to BiUH’s own website. BiUH’s website could not be reached for an independent check, so the university description here comes from the advert itself. BiUH has not published a salary figure or rank-specific criteria. I will update this page if the deadline or start date changes.
