University of Alabama Online MSN 2027: Ranking, Requirements, Tuition and Can International Nurses Apply?

University of Alabama Online MSN 2027: Ranking, Requirements, Tuition and Can International Nurses Apply?
The University of Alabama online MSN is No. 5 in U.S. News 2026 and costs $480 per credit plus a $25 fee, but only RNs living and licensed in approved U.S. states can enrol. Concentrations, state lists, requirements and 2027 deadlines.

The University of Alabama online MSN, run by the Capstone College of Nursing in Tuscaloosa, is ranked No. 5 overall in the U.S. News 2026 Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs, and it is by far the cheapest programme in the top five at $480 per credit hour plus a $25 college fee. For nurses living outside the United States, though, the answer is no. Alabama only admits registered nurses who live in, and hold an unencumbered RN licence from, one of its approved U.S. states, and clinicals must take place in an approved state where you are licensed.

If you are a U.S.-licensed RN in one of those states, including foreign-trained nurses now working in the U.S., Alabama is worth a serious look. You can start in fall, spring or summer. The University of Alabama online MSN deadline for summer 2027 is 1 December 2026, and for fall 2027 it is 1 March 2027. Details were checked on UA’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

University of Alabama online MSN ranking

The Capstone College of Nursing announced on 27 January 2026 that U.S. News ranked it No. 5 overall for Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs in the 2026 edition. The college’s release does not say whether the rank is shared. Above it in the same edition are Ohio State (No. 1) and Duke and the University of South Carolina (both No. 2).

A thesis is optional in the NP concentrations. Family NP students must find their own field placement site, and Nurse Executive students must find their own sites and preceptors, though the college helps with affiliation agreements. UA also runs an online DNP for nurses who already hold a master’s degree.

Campus visits for NP students

The FNP and Mental Health concentrations include two required trips to Tuscaloosa: a Skills Day in the clinical readiness course (NUR 568), and an Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) as part of the final clinical course. Budget for both.

Can international nurses apply to the UA online MSN?

UA’s online pages do not mention international applicants at all. They describe eligibility only in terms of U.S. state residency and RN licensure, which in practice settles the question.

Your situationCan you enrol?Why
Living outside the U.S.NoUA admits only RNs who are residents of approved states.
Wanting an F-1 student visaNoThe programme is online and UA does not describe any visa route for it.
Foreign-trained RN living and licensed in an approved stateYes, if you meet the requirementsUA’s rules are about residence and licensure, not where you trained.
Licensed in one approved state but living in anotherCheck with UAYou must live in an eligible state, and clinicals must be in approved states where you are licensed.
Planning to move house during the programmeTell UA firstStudents must report any change of residence.

Which states are eligible

UA’s two official pages do not match, so check both before applying.

  • UA Online’s NP programme page lists 30 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.
  • The Capstone College of Nursing state authorisation page lists 43 states for NP programmes, adding Alaska, Arizona, California, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. That page was last modified in July 2025.
  • Nurse Executive and Nurse Educator use a wider map on the college page; states shown in grey are not available.

If your state appears on only one list, email the college before you apply and keep the reply.

The route for a foreign-educated nurse

  1. Get U.S. permanent residence or a work visa: you must be a resident of an approved state, which means living there legally.
  2. Meet your state board’s rules for foreign-educated nurses: usually a credentials evaluation (often through CGFNS, now TruMerit) and an English test such as IELTS, TOEFL or OET, depending on the board.
  3. Pass the NCLEX-RN: and get an unencumbered RN licence in an approved state.
  4. Check your BSN: UA asks for a bachelor’s in nursing from a regionally accredited school. A foreign BSN usually needs a course-by-course evaluation; ask UA’s Graduate School which agencies it accepts, as the nursing pages do not say.
  5. Apply through the UA Graduate School: choose the Distance programme type and the Distance Learning campus.

UA online MSN requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in nursing from a regionally accredited school of nursing.
  • A GPA of at least 3.0 overall, or 3.0 for the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate study.
  • A current, unencumbered RN licence and residence in an approved state, kept active throughout the programme.
  • A copy of every active RN licence you hold (an online verification screenshot is accepted).
  • Official transcripts.
  • A statement of purpose.
  • A resume or CV.
  • Contact details for two professional references, who UA will email.
  • An interview, offered after your file is complete.
  • Acceptable drug and background screens before final admission.

UA’s pages do not set a minimum amount of nursing experience for the NP or Nurse Executive concentrations.

UA online MSN deadlines

UA accepts applications for each semester.

Start termDeadline
Summer 20271 December 2026
Fall 20271 March 2027
Spring 20281 September 2027

The spring 2027 deadline (1 September 2026) has passed. The RN to BSN/MSN Nurse Educator page uses a preferred 1 March deadline for summer admission, which is a different calendar from the NP and Nurse Executive pages.

What happens after you apply

UA’s process has a fixed order. You submit the Graduate School application with transcripts, statement, resume, licence copies and two referee contacts. UA then emails your referees directly, so warn them first and give them an email address they check. Applicants who meet the written requirements receive instructions for an interview. An offer of admission is not final until your drug screen and background check come back acceptable; you pay the outside vendor yourself, and UA’s Nurse Educator page says the screen must be renewed every year.

Choosing between UA’s concentrations

  • FNP: the right choice if you want to see patients of all ages in primary care. It is the concentration where you must secure your own field placement, so start asking clinics in your area early.
  • Mental Health (PMHNP): for nurses who want to assess, diagnose and treat psychiatric conditions across the lifespan. It has the same credit range, clinical hours and campus visits as FNP.
  • Nurse Executive: for charge nurses and unit managers who want leadership roles. It is shorter, cheaper, has no campus visits and still includes 540 practicum hours.
  • RN to BSN/MSN Nurse Educator: only for RNs who hold an associate degree or diploma rather than a BSN, and want to teach.

UA online MSN tuition

UA Online lists $480 per credit hour plus a $25 per credit hour Capstone College of Nursing fee, so $505 per credit.

ConcentrationCreditsTuition and college fee at $505 per credit
FNP or PMHNP53$26,765
FNP or PMHNP59$29,795
Nurse Executive36$18,180
Nurse Executive42$21,210

These totals are my calculations from UA’s published rates and leave out other university fees, books and travel. UA says scholarships and grants are available; federal aid is only for U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens.

Costs not covered

  • Two trips to Tuscaloosa for NP students (Skills Day and OSCE).
  • Drug and background screening, paid to an outside vendor.
  • RN licence renewals in every state where you hold a licence.
  • Time off work for 780 clinical hours, and any preceptor arrangements at your own site.
  • National certification exam fees.

Accreditation

UA’s master’s nursing programme is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). UA Online’s pages do not publish certification pass rates for the FNP or PMHNP concentrations.

How to write the UA statement of purpose

UA does not publish a length or prompt on its programme pages. The statement is your chance to show you can handle self-directed online study and find your own clinical site.

  • Name your concentration and the patients you want to serve.
  • Describe your current RN role and a specific case that shaped your choice.
  • Say where you will do clinical hours and whether you already have a preceptor in mind.
  • Explain how you will attend the Skills Day and OSCE in Tuscaloosa.
  • Close with your plan after certification, for example a rural clinic in your state.

For illustration only, an FNP applicant might open:

“Most of the patients on my telemetry unit in rural Georgia have no primary care provider within forty minutes’ drive. After five years of discharging them with instructions they cannot follow up on, I want to be the provider they come back to.”

Common mistakes foreign-educated nurses make

  • Applying from abroad: UA admits only residents of approved states.
  • Trusting one state list: UA’s two pages list different states for NP study.
  • Doing clinicals in a state where you are not licensed: UA requires clinicals only in approved states where you hold a licence.
  • Leaving the clinical site to the last minute: FNP students must secure their own placement.
  • Missing the 1 December summer deadline: UA’s summer intake closes earlier than many nurses expect.

Who should apply

Apply if you are a U.S.-licensed RN living in an approved state, want an FNP, PMHNP or nurse executive degree at a modest price, and can find your own clinical site. Foreign-trained nurses already settled in the U.S. fit well, because UA’s rules focus on licence and residence.

Look elsewhere if you live outside the U.S., need an F-1 visa, or want the school to arrange your clinical placements.
