Ohio State engineering graduate admission for international students goes through one university application, but each department sets its own deadlines and test rules. For autumn 2027 entry the international fee is $70, the GRE is not required in Computer Science and Engineering or Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering will not even look at GRE scores. The earliest date that matters for funding is 14 November 2026, the CSE fellowship deadline.
Applicants from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa have one clear advantage at Ohio State: citizens of those countries do not need TOEFL or IELTS. There is also one common trap. Ohio State does not accept three-year bachelor’s degrees or HNDs as equal to a US bachelor’s, so check your degree before you pay. The College of Engineering says nearly all of its PhD students and about half of its master’s students are fully funded. All facts below were checked on Ohio State pages on 29 October 2026 unless another source is named.
Ohio State engineering ranking
In the U.S. News 2026 Best Graduate Schools edition, released on 7 April 2026, the Ohio State College of Engineering is tied at No. 28 in Best Engineering Schools. Spectrum News 1 Ohio reported the result on release day, and VnExpress International’s top 30 list (9 April 2026) shows Ohio State sharing No. 28 with Penn State, UC Santa Barbara and NC State.
For an international applicant the rank is only part of the picture. Ohio State is one of the largest universities in the US, the college sits on the main Columbus campus in a state capital, and its tuition is far below that of private schools with a similar rank. That combination is why many African engineers shortlist it.
Departments and graduate degrees
The College of Engineering lists these graduate units:
- Aviation
- Biomedical Engineering
- Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (William G. Lowrie Department)
- Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering
- Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)
- Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE)
- Engineering Education
- Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering
- Integrated Systems Engineering (ISE)
- Knowlton School of Architecture
- Materials Science and Engineering
- Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE)
The main degrees are the Master of Science (MS) and the PhD. MAE splits its MS into a research (thesis) track and an experiential (non-thesis) track and also lists a Master of Applied Aeronautics. ECE and CSE offer the MS and PhD. The college also runs online professional master’s degrees through its professional and distance education unit, but those are not routes to an F-1 student visa in most cases, so check before you apply to one.
Ohio State engineering graduate admission requirements
You apply through the Ohio State graduate application and pick one programme. CSE, ECE and MAE ask for broadly the same set of documents:
- Statement of purpose: MAE caps it at 1,000 words, double spaced, in Times New Roman, Arial or Calibri at 10 or 12 point, with a “Statement of Purpose” header.
- CV or resume: no longer than two pages in CSE and MAE. MAE wants your GPA and its scale on it.
- Three letters of recommendation: academic referees are strongly preferred, and MAE does not accept letters from teaching assistants.
- Transcripts: one scanned official transcript per institution, front and back, plus proof of degree. CSE asks for every institution where you earned credit.
- English test scores: sent directly by the testing agency, unless you are exempt.
- Writing sample (MAE research track): short answers of up to 300 words each to four prompts, the fourth optional.
- Application fee: $70 for international applicants and $60 for US applicants, paid by card and not refundable.
Minimum GPA: CSE and ECE both state 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and ECE prefers 3.2. CSE says most of its applicants have about 3.5 or higher. ISE gives preference to applicants above 3.0.
GRE policy by department
| Department | GRE for autumn 2027 |
|---|---|
| Computer Science and Engineering | Not required |
| Electrical and Computer Engineering | Not required for MS or PhD; no disadvantage for leaving it out |
| Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering | Not accepted; removed from the application in 2023, and scores sent are not reviewed |
| Integrated Systems Engineering | Not required, but highly recommended for operations research, data analytics and supply chain applicants |
| Other departments | Check the department page |
ISE gives an average GRE Quantitative score of 164 for its applicants. If you are applying there in one of the data-heavy areas, a strong quant score is worth the effort. The institution code for scores is 1592.
English requirements
Graduate and Professional Admissions sets these university minimums. Many programmes ask for more, and ISE asks for IELTS 7.0.
| Test | University minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (including Home Edition) | 79, or 4.0 on the updated TOEFL scale introduced in January 2026 |
| IELTS Academic (including IELTS Online) | 6.5 |
| Duolingo English Test | 120 |
Ohio State does not accept TOEFL “MyBest” scores or IELTS One Skill Retake results. Scores are valid for two years and must arrive by your application deadline. A degree taught in English does not exempt you on its own.
The exemption is by country. Citizens of a listed country, and anyone who earned a bachelor’s degree or higher in a listed country, do not need a test. The list includes Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia and South Africa, as well as the UK, Ireland, Canada (outside Quebec), Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. The university says it is not granting petitions for countries outside the list this year. Even exempt students must take an online academic English writing assessment before arrival, and teaching associates whose first language is not English must certify oral proficiency.
Degree and transcript rules
This is where many African applicants fail before anyone reads their statement. Ohio State requires a degree equal to a four-year US bachelor’s, which means at least 16 years of education in total.
- Three-year bachelor’s degrees are not treated as equivalent. You would need a master’s, an approved postgraduate diploma or an extra year of university coursework first.
- National Diplomas and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) are not equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.
- Ohio State publishes degree recognition notes for Nigeria, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the UK and a few other countries. Read the note for your country if there is one.
- CSE asks for official final transcripts and proof of degree from every institution. MAE needs certified mark sheets from applicants who studied in India or Pakistan.
- The international requirements page does not ask for a WES evaluation.
Application deadlines for autumn 2027
There is no single college deadline. These are the dates published by the departments I checked.
| Programme | Fellowship or funding deadline | Final deadline |
|---|---|---|
| CSE MS and PhD | 14 Nov 2026 | 15 Dec 2026 |
| ECE PhD | 30 Nov 2026 | 1 Mar 2027 |
| ECE MS | 30 Nov 2026 (PhD applicants get priority for nominations) | 1 Feb 2027 |
| MAE PhD and MS (research and experiential) | 1 Dec 2026 (recommended for fellowships) | 15 Jan 2027 or 1 Mar 2027 depending on track |
| ISE (international applicants) | 30 Nov 2026 | 1 Jan 2027 |
MAE lists 15 January and 1 March 2027 without saying which belongs to which track, so confirm yours on the track page. ISE’s page carries no year and was last updated in 2024, so I have applied the same dates to this cycle (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens). CSE admits international students in autumn only, and ECE does not review spring or summer applications.
Deadline
If you want a fellowship or an assistantship, treat the November and early December dates as your real deadline. CSE fellowship consideration closes on 14 November 2026.
PhD funding at Ohio State engineering
The College of Engineering says nearly 100% of its PhD students and about 50% of its master’s students are fully funded. A full package covers tuition, most fees, a monthly stipend and a 100% health insurance subsidy, and the college values a five-year PhD package at more than $245,000.
Funding comes in four forms:
- University fellowships: merit awards run by the Graduate School. You cannot apply for them; your department nominates you, which is why the fellowship deadlines come early.
- Graduate Research Associate (GRA): paid research in a professor’s funded project, often the same work as your dissertation.
- Graduate Teaching Associate (GTA): teaching labs, grading and supporting courses.
- External fellowships: awards from outside the university, which the college encourages.
From autumn 2026 the Graduate School raised the minimum graduate associate stipend by 8%. On a 50% appointment the minimum is $2,897 a month, which is $26,073 for nine months or $34,764 for twelve. University Fellowships rose to match the same monthly figure, and Presidential and dissertation-year fellowships now pay $3,428 a month.
Funding is not automatic. ECE says admission depends partly on a faculty member being willing to advise you, and CSE makes spring PhD offers only when a professor has research associate money available. Tick the funding box on your application and contact professors early.
MS funding
Ohio State is more generous to master’s students than most peers: the college puts its funded share at about half. In practice those places go mostly to strong thesis students who join a lab. For your I-20 you must still show you can pay the full cost, so plan as a self-funded student and treat any assistantship as a bonus.
Tuition and cost of attendance
Graduate and Professional Admissions puts tuition and fees for a full-time non-resident graduate student at $45,938 for the 2026-27 academic year (two semesters), including the out-of-state surcharge. The registrar’s 2026-27 table breaks a semester down like this:
| Item (per semester, Columbus campus) | Non-resident graduate |
|---|---|
| Instructional fee | $6,837.04 |
| General fee and student union fee | $345.92 |
| Non-resident surcharge | $15,595.52 |
| Engineering programme fee (new in-person MS and PhD students from autumn 2026) | $500.00 |
| Learning technology fee (engineering) | $255.00 |
| Student activity, recreation and COTA bus fees | $190.50 |
So an engineering master’s student should budget roughly $47,450 a year for tuition and fees alone, before rent, food and health insurance. The $500 programme fee is covered for students on a full (0.50 FTE) appointment or fellowship. Ohio State enrols every student in its Student Health Benefits Plan automatically; the price is on the student health insurance site, so add it to your budget.
Costs not covered
- Health insurance if you are self-funded, and summer living costs if your stipend is nine-month only.
- SEVIS fee, visa fee and the flight to Columbus.
- Rent deposits, furniture and winter clothing; Columbus winters are cold.
- For funded students on part-time (0.25 FTE) appointments, a prorated share of the programme fee.
STEM OPT after graduation
Engineering degrees fall under CIP family 14 on the Department of Homeland Security STEM Designated Degree Program list. After your MS or PhD you can use 12 months of OPT and apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension with an E-Verify employer. Confirm the CIP code on your I-20 with Ohio State’s Office of International Affairs.
How to contact potential PhD advisers
At Ohio State the professor’s grant often decides whether a PhD admit comes with research associate pay, so a short, specific email helps.
- Pick two or three labs: read each professor’s last two papers and the lab page, and check they still list open positions.
- Write a precise subject line: for example, “Autumn 2027 PhD applicant, power systems, ECE”.
- Lead with one result: your closest project, what you built or measured, and the number that shows it worked.
- Ask one question: are they taking new PhD students for autumn 2027?
- Attach a one-page CV: send one polite follow-up after two weeks, then move on.
A short opening, for illustration only:
“Dear Professor [Name], I am an electrical engineering graduate of [University], [Country], applying to the Ohio State ECE PhD for autumn 2027. My final-year project modelled voltage stability on a [size] distribution feeder using field data from our local utility, and your recent paper on [topic] uses a related method. Are you considering new PhD students for autumn 2027?”
How to write the statement of purpose for Ohio State
MAE gives you 1,000 words and a separate writing sample, so the statement does not have to say everything. Use it for your research case.
- Open with the engineering problem you want to work on and how you came to it, in two or three sentences.
- Spend the middle on one or two projects: what you did yourself, the tools you used and what you found.
- Name two or three Ohio State faculty or centres and say what you would work on with them.
- Say what you plan to do after the degree. An industry goal is fine for an MS; a PhD statement should show you understand research.
- If one semester went badly, explain it in a sentence and move on.
- Follow the format rules (font, spacing, header). A committee reading hundreds of files notices when you ignore them.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Applying with a three-year degree or an HND: Ohio State will not treat either as a bachelor’s.
- Taking a test you do not need: citizens of Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and other listed countries are exempt. Applicants from countries not on the list cannot petition this year.
- Converting your CGPA yourself: report your GPA with its scale as your university gives it, as MAE asks, and let admissions interpret it.
- Sending GRE scores to MAE: they will not be read, so spend the money elsewhere.
- Missing the November dates: fellowship nominations happen early, and late files compete only for what is left.
- Applying for spring: CSE takes international students only in autumn, and ECE does not review spring files.
- Waiting on referees: CSE warns that letter invitations can take days to process, so register your referees early.
Who should apply
Ohio State suits engineers with a four-year degree who want a top-30 programme at a public-university price, especially those from exempt countries who can skip the English test. It is a strong PhD option because funding is close to universal and the 2026 stipend rise was large. Thesis-track MS students also have a better chance of funding here than at most schools.
It is a poor fit if your degree is three years long or an HND, if you need a January start, or if you want a coursework degree with no lab attached and cannot cover about $47,000 a year in tuition and fees.
