UC San Diego Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

UC San Diego Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
UC San Diego admitted 27.2% of fall 2026 applicants, ignores SAT and ACT scores, needs IELTS 7 or Duolingo 115 and gives internationals no need-based aid. Here are the costs, PIQs and the 30 November 2026 UC deadline.

UC San Diego admission requirements for international students are set by the University of California system. You apply through the UC application, not the Common App, answer four of eight Personal Insight Questions, report your grades exactly as they appear on your school records, and prove English proficiency with a TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score at UC San Diego’s own minimums. Non-California applicants need at least a 3.4 GPA in the required courses. SAT and ACT scores are not used in admission decisions at all. Need-based aid is not available to international students, so plan on paying the full nonresident cost.

UC San Diego is ranked No. 29 among National Universities and No. 6 among public universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition. For fall 2026 it received 141,767 first-year applications and admitted 38,571, a rate of 27.2%, including 6,987 international students. For fall 2027 entry, the UC application filing period ends on 30 November 2026. Students who started in fall 2026 pay about $60,524 a year in tuition, fees and health insurance before housing. I checked these figures on UC and UC San Diego pages on 29 October 2026.

UC San Diego announced both results on 22 September 2026. Within the UC system, Berkeley and UCLA tied for first among public universities; our guides to UC Berkeley and UCLA cover them.

These are UC’s preliminary figures as of 17 June 2026. The applicant split by residency for fall 2026 was not on the pages I checked, so I cannot give an exact international admit rate for this year. Data aggregators reading UC’s fall 2025 figures put it at about 29.5% (7,144 of 24,224), which is close to the overall rate.

Do not let the 27% figure relax you. The GPA band shows that most admits have nearly straight top grades in demanding courses, and selective majors are much harder than the campus average.

UC San Diego tuition for international students

UC charges by entering cohort: your tuition, Student Services Fee and Nonresident Supplemental Tuition are fixed for up to six years at the rate of the year you start, and each new cohort pays more. The figures below are for nonresident undergraduates who entered in fall 2026. If you start in fall 2027, expect higher numbers; the 2027-28 rates were not published when I checked.

Item (2026-27, entered fall 2026)Annual amount
Tuition$14,202
Student Services Fee$1,386
Nonresident Supplemental Tuition$39,270
Campus fees$2,464
UC Student Health Insurance Plan$3,195
Total recurring chargesAbout $60,524
One-time Enrollment Services Fee$225
One-time International Student Visa Administration Fee$200

Housing and food are extra. UC San Diego’s latest full budget on its financial aid site (2025-26) put on-campus food and housing at $19,629, books at $1,365, personal costs at $2,364 and transport at $1,047, for a total of $82,512 that year. Combine the 2026-27 fees with similar living costs and a year is likely to come to about $85,000 or more. The health fee can be waived if you have equivalent cover.

UC San Diego scholarships for international students

UC San Diego’s financial aid office says nonresident students are considered for federal aid only, which international students cannot receive. That means:

  • No need-based aid for international undergraduates, and no CSS Profile, ISFAA or university aid form to file.
  • Admission is need-blind in the sense that your finances do not affect the decision, but you must prove you can pay for your visa.
  • International students may apply for private education loans, usually with a US co-signer.
  • Merit scholarships for international first-years are very limited, and I found no dedicated UC San Diego award for them on the official pages.

Your realistic funding sources are your family, an employer or a government scholarship at home. For fully funded options in the US, start with our best American scholarships for international students and our US scholarship deadlines list.

UC San Diego admission requirements for international students

  1. UC application: one application for all UC campuses. The fee is $95 per campus for international applicants.
  2. College ranking: you rank your top four of UC San Diego’s undergraduate colleges in the application.
  3. Academic record: self-report every course and grade from grades 9 to 12 exactly as on your records. Do not convert grades yourself or through a paid service.
  4. Minimum GPA: 3.4 for non-California and international applicants, based on required courses taken in grades 10 and 11.
  5. Personal Insight Questions: four of eight, up to 350 words each.
  6. English proficiency: TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo if your native language is not English and your schooling was not in English.
  7. Major choice: Data Science, Engineering and Public Health are selective majors, so list a non-selective alternate.

UC does not ask for recommendation letters with the first-year application, and you do not send transcripts until you are admitted. Admitted students send official records by 1 July, and IB results by 15 July. Admission stays provisional until those records are checked.

Country-specific academic rules

  • British-system students need at least five IGCSE, GCSE or O Level passes and three A Levels at grade C or better, and must pass at least three A Levels to finalise admission.
  • Students from 13-year systems must finish all 13 years before enrolling.
  • Students from India and Pakistan complete standard XII and sit the 10th and 12th year board exams.
  • If your country is not on UC San Diego’s list, email the international admissions office before you apply.

Testing policy

UC San Diego does not consider SAT or ACT scores in admission or scholarship decisions. Scores may only be used for minimum eligibility or course placement after you enrol. Do not spend money on the SAT for this application.

English requirements

Campuses can set higher scores than the UC system minimum, and UC San Diego does for IELTS and the older TOEFL. Use UC San Diego’s column. You must meet the requirement by December of your final school year, and UC does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake or MyBest TOEFL scores.

Deadline

The UC application for fall 2027 closes on 30 November 2026. If you miss it, you cannot apply to UC San Diego as a first-year until the next cycle.

How to write the UC Personal Insight Questions

The PIQs are the only essays UC San Diego reads. You choose four of eight questions, which cover leadership, creativity, a talent or skill, an educational opportunity or barrier, a significant challenge, an academic subject that inspires you, community service and anything else you want UC to know. All questions are weighted equally.

  • Write four different stories. If two answers describe the same club, you waste space.
  • Answer the question in the first two sentences, then use the rest for evidence.
  • Keep the style plain. UC readers look for facts about what you did, not literary flourishes.
  • Use the academic subject question to show interest in your intended major, especially for selective majors.

A short sample opening for the academic subject question, for illustration:

“I first understood statistics when our village water committee asked why some wells made children sick and others did not. I counted cases at the clinic for six weekends and drew the results on squared paper, and the pattern pointed to two wells that shared a drainage channel.”

What happens after you apply

  1. Check your portal: UC San Diego emails you when your applicant portal is ready. Watch for requests for missing information.
  2. Decision: first-year decisions are released in spring 2027 through the portal.
  3. Accept and pay: accept your offer by the date on your offer letter and pay the deposit.
  4. Send records: official transcripts by 1 July and IB results by 15 July.
  5. I-20 and visa: submit proof that you can cover all expenses in the US, receive your I-20, pay the SEVIS fee and attend your visa interview.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Converting grades to a US 4.0 scale yourself. UC tells you to report them exactly as on your records.
  • Using the UC system IELTS minimum of 6.5 instead of UC San Diego’s 7.
  • Choosing Data Science, Engineering or Public Health with no alternate major.
  • Paying for SAT prep, when UC San Diego does not look at scores.
  • Budgeting with this year’s fees, when your cohort will pay the higher 2027-28 rate.
  • Applying for only one UC campus when the same application could cover several.

Costs that aid will not cover

  • Flights to and from San Diego.
  • Housing deposits and furniture if you move off campus after your first year, in one of the most expensive housing markets in the US.
  • Visa, SEVIS and the one-time $200 visa administration fee.
  • Summer costs if you stay for research or courses.
  • Fee rises: the rate is fixed for your cohort for up to six years, but campus fees can still change.

Majors and strengths at UC San Diego

UC San Diego is strongest in the sciences and engineering. Biology, cognitive science, computer science, data science, bioengineering and economics are popular, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography makes it a leading place for marine and climate science. The university runs on quarters, so you take three terms a year with faster-moving courses.

Campus and city

The campus is in La Jolla, a coastal neighbourhood in the north of San Diego, close to the Pacific. Undergraduates belong to one of eight residential colleges, each with its own general education requirements and community, which is why you rank them in the application. San Diego has a mild climate all year, a large biotech sector and a trolley line that reaches the campus. Rents near the coast are high.

Graduate admissions at UC San Diego

Graduate applications go to individual departments through UC San Diego’s Graduate Division, with separate deadlines, usually in December or January for the following fall. The Graduate Division publishes its own English proficiency rules. Doctoral students are commonly funded through teaching or research assistantships, while most master’s students pay tuition themselves.

Who should apply to UC San Diego

  • Students with top grades in science or engineering who can pay about $85,000 a year.
  • Students who prefer not to sit the SAT or ACT.
  • Applicants who want a coastal city, a quarter system and a research-heavy campus.
  • Families who will use one UC application to try several campuses at once.

If you need need-based aid, UC San Diego cannot provide it, and you should put your effort into colleges that fund international students.
