Swarthmore College Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Swarthmore College Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Swarthmore is need-aware for international applicants but meets 100% of need with no loans. Here are the 7.4% acceptance rate, the $98,370 cost for 2026-27, the English or video requirement, the short answers and the fall 2027 deadlines.

Swarthmore College admission requirements for international students are the same as for US applicants, plus one extra step for students at schools outside the US: you must send either the free Swarthmore Video Response, an English test score (TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo) or a third-party video interview from InitialView or Vericant. Everyone else sends the Common App, Coalition on Scoir or QuestBridge application, two 250-word Swarthmore short answers, a counsellor letter, two teacher recommendations and a $60 fee or a SwatPass waiver. SAT and ACT scores are optional.

Swarthmore is need-aware for international applicants, then meets 100% of the need it calculates, with no loans. The average aid award for international students in the Class of 2030 was more than $93,000, against a full 2026-27 cost of $98,370. Swarthmore admitted 969 of 13,029 applicants for the Class of 2030, about 7.4%, and is tied for No. 3 among National Liberal Arts Colleges in the U.S. News 2027 edition. For fall 2027, Fall Early Decision closes on 15 November 2026 and Winter Early Decision and Regular Decision on 4 January 2027. I checked everything below on Swarthmore’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

Swarthmore scholarships for international students

Swarthmore gives need-based aid only. Its policy for international citizens is clear on paper:

  • Need-aware admission: applies to international citizens. Permanent residents, dual US citizens, DACA and undocumented students, and asylee or refugee applicants graduating from a US high school are treated differently.
  • 100% of calculated need: aid can reach full tuition, fees, housing, food, academic supplies and some personal costs, including an $800 yearly book allowance.
  • No loans: Swarthmore’s aid to international students contains no loans.
  • Four-year rule: if you might need aid at any point in four years, for example because a sibling starts university or a parent loses a job, you must say so on your application.

I would read that last rule as “apply now if there is any doubt”. A family that pays in full this year can still need help later, and Swarthmore will only consider that if you flagged it at the start.

How to apply for Swarthmore financial aid

  1. Declare your intent: say on the admission application that you will apply for aid.
  2. Wait for the decision: do not send the Certificate of Finances or bank statements unless you are admitted and plan to enrol, or the Financial Aid Office asks.
  3. File within seven days of admission: admitted international students complete the CSS Profile (Swarthmore waives the fee for them) and the documents on their financial aid checklist.
  4. Upload through the portal: all financial documents go to the checklist in the applicant portal. Swarthmore does not accept them by email.

Swarthmore admission requirements for international students: the application

  1. Application: Common App, Coalition on Scoir or QuestBridge, with no preference.
  2. Swarthmore short answers: two prompts, 250 words each.
  3. Fee: $60, or a waiver from Swarthmore (through SwatPass), the Common App, NACAC, the College Board or ACT.
  4. School report, counsellor recommendation and transcript.
  5. Two teacher recommendations: from academic subjects, on school letterhead.
  6. Midyear grades: or a teachers’ progress report if your school has no midyear grades.
  7. One proficiency item for students at schools outside the US: the Swarthmore Video Response, an English test score or an InitialView or Vericant video.
  8. National exam results: official results for exams taken in secondary school, such as O-levels, IGCSE, GCSE or SSCE, and leaving exams such as IB, A-levels or WASSCE if you have them.

Transcripts must be originals sealed by the school or certified copies signed by the head or counsellor, with official English translations where needed. Regional deans read them in the context of your country’s system. You can apply to Swarthmore at most three times in total, counting first-year and transfer attempts.

Testing policy

SAT and ACT scores are optional, self-reported or official, and Swarthmore says students who do not send them are not penalised.

English requirements

Swarthmore sets no minimum score. If you send a test, Duolingo scores must come officially from Duolingo, only your best single sitting counts, and you cannot combine section scores across sittings. Testing is encouraged if most of your schooling was not in English. If you choose the Video Response instead, it is free and recorded in the portal after you submit; portals open by mid-October.

How to write the Swarthmore short answers, with a sample opening

For 2026-27 you answer both prompts in up to 250 words each. The first asks which parts of your identity or background matter most to you, and how you have grown in dealing with difference or working in communities other than your own. The second asks about a topic that has recently fascinated you, inside or outside class: what made you curious, how it links to your other interests and how it has shaped you.

  • Identity prompt: pick one part of your background and show it in action with people unlike you. A boarding-school dormitory, a mixed-language church or a cross-town football league gives you a real scene.
  • Curiosity prompt: choose a narrow topic and show the trail you followed: a question, a source, a test, a new question. This is where readers see how you think.
  • Do not repeat your Common App essay: each answer should add something new.

Sample opening for the curiosity prompt, for illustration only:

“I wanted to know why our market’s tomato prices doubled every June, so I started writing them down. Eight months of notebooks later, I am less interested in tomatoes than in how a road closure two hundred kilometres away reaches my mother’s purse.”

What happens after you apply

  1. Portal: Swarthmore’s portal opens by mid-October. Record the Video Response there if you chose it, and upload extra materials such as a research abstract or a Schoolhouse.world portfolio.
  2. Optional interview: request one through Swarthmore’s interview page. Not interviewing does not count against you.
  3. Decision: online in mid-December (Fall ED), mid-February (Winter ED) or by 1 April (RD).
  4. Aid: admitted aid applicants submit the CSS Profile and documents within seven days.
  5. Visa: after your deposit, Swarthmore issues the I-20 for your F-1 visa. A special international orientation runs each August before first-year orientation.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Forgetting the proficiency item: students at schools outside the US must send the video, a test score or a third-party interview, whatever their citizenship.
  • Not flagging future aid needs: you have to say on the application that you may need aid later.
  • Sending bank statements early: Swarthmore asks you to wait until you are admitted.
  • Leaving out national exam results: official WASSCE, SSCE, IGCSE or similar results are expected if you have them.
  • Emailing documents: financial documents must go through the portal checklist.
  • Missing the seven-day aid window: plan ahead so your parents’ income papers are translated and ready before decisions come out.

Costs Swarthmore aid may not cover

  • Your family’s calculated contribution, if any.
  • English test fees, or third-party interview fees if you use InitialView or Vericant.
  • The US visa application fee and SEVIS I-901 fee; check current amounts on official US government sites.
  • Part of the health insurance premium if your aid discount is under 100%.
  • Winter clothing and summer living costs. Off-campus work in the US needs government authorisation, so do not plan on a summer job without checking the rules.

Majors, campus and city

Swarthmore is a small liberal arts college with engineering alongside the arts and sciences. Students can also take courses at Haverford and Bryn Mawr through the Tri-College Consortium. Its Honors Program brings in outside examiners to assess students’ final work.

The campus is a wooded arboretum about 11 miles southwest of Philadelphia, and Philadelphia International Airport is about 15 minutes away by car, which makes flights home easier than at many rural colleges. International students are invited to i20, a student group for international students and those who studied abroad, and can work on campus.

Swarthmore graduate admissions

Swarthmore teaches undergraduates only and has no graduate programmes. Students who want a master’s degree apply to other universities after graduating.

Who should apply to Swarthmore

Apply if you like hard academic work for its own sake, want a small college close to a big city, and are interested in pairing engineering or science with the humanities. Students who enjoy writing and discussion do well here.

Look elsewhere if you want a large campus, a pre-professional business degree or an easy admission round. If you need aid, pair Swarthmore with need-blind colleges, since its international admission is need-aware.
