Pomona College admission requirements for international students match those for US applicants: the Common App, Coalition on Scoir or QuestBridge application, two short Pomona essays, a school report and counsellor letter, two teacher recommendations and an $80 fee or a Pomona Access Pass waiver. SAT and ACT scores are optional. If your school does not teach mainly in English, you must also send TOEFL (100 on the older iBT scale), IELTS (7) or Duolingo (130).
Pomona admits international students on a need-aware basis, then meets the full demonstrated need of every international student it admits. About 41% of its international students receive need-based aid, averaging nearly $74,000 a year, against a 2026-27 bill of $95,670 before insurance and travel. Pomona is tied for No. 3 among National Liberal Arts Colleges in the U.S. News 2027 edition, and it admitted about 7% of applicants in its latest published Common Data Set. For fall 2027, Early Decision I closes on 8 November 2026 and Early Decision II and Regular Decision on 8 January 2027. I checked these details on Pomona’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
Pomona College ranking and headline numbers
In the U.S. News 2027 Best Colleges edition, released on 22 September 2026, Pomona shares No. 3 among National Liberal Arts Colleges with Bowdoin, Claremont McKenna, Swarthmore and the US Naval Academy. In the 2026 edition it was tied for No. 7. Pomona’s own release adds that the same edition put it third for best value among liberal arts colleges and eighth for undergraduate teaching.

Pomona College acceptance rate and class profile
Pomona’s last two Common Data Sets are published as interactive dashboards that I could not open, so the acceptance figures here come from the 2024-25 Common Data Set as reported by The Koppelman Group, and the class details come from Pomona’s own news releases.
| Measure | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Applicants | 12,249 | 2024-25 CDS |
| Admitted | 868 | 2024-25 CDS |
| Acceptance rate | 7.1% | 2024-25 CDS |
| Early Decision acceptance rate | 12.9% (224 of 1,726) | 2024-25 CDS |
| Class of 2030 offers | 876 students from 44 foreign countries; 12% international | Pomona, March 2026 |
| First-years who enrolled in fall 2026 | 414, from 42 states and 27 countries | Pomona, September 2026 |
Pomona’s international students come from more than 65 countries. China, India, the United Kingdom, South Korea and Canada send the most.
Pomona College tuition for international students in 2026-27
| Item | On campus, 2026-27 |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $71,660 |
| Fees | $420 |
| Housing and food | $23,590 |
| Total billed charges | $95,670 |
| Travel and personal (average, not billed) | $1,500 to $2,600 |
| Student health insurance (estimate, extra) | $3,312 |
Two details matter for international students. From fall 2026 Pomona supplies books and course materials through its Access to Course Essentials (ACE) programme, included in the fees. And international students must join the college health plan: unlike US students, they cannot waive it with outside insurance, so budget the $3,312 on top of the bill unless your aid covers it.
Pomona College scholarships for international students
Pomona gives no merit or athletic scholarships. All aid is need-based.
- Need-aware admission: the committee considers financial need when it decides on international applicants.
- Full need met: Pomona says it meets the full need of every admitted international student.
- No loans in the need calculation: loans are available, but Pomona does not use them to meet need.
- Who gets aid: 41% of international students receive need-based aid, averaging nearly $74,000 a year.
- Fixed at admission: you must apply for aid with your admission application. You cannot change the request after you submit, admitted students who did not apply cannot appeal later, and your eligibility is set at admission for all four years.
The last rule is the one that catches families. If there is any chance you will need help in year two or three, apply for aid now. Undocumented students and students with refugee or asylee status living in the US are treated as domestic applicants.
How to apply for Pomona financial aid
- Say you need aid on the application: answer the aid question on the Common App, Scoir or QuestBridge form.
- File the CSS Profile: use Pomona’s code 4607. If the CSS fee is a burden, you can use the free Pomona College International Financial Aid Application instead, which asks for your Pomona Admissions ID from the applicant portal.
- Send income documents: a translated copy of your parents’ tax documents or a statement of earnings from two years before. CSS filers upload through IDOC; Pomona-form filers upload through the applicant portal.
- Meet the aid deadline: Pomona lists aid dates on its application materials and deadlines page. Plan to file at the same time as your admission application.
Returning international students on aid do not reapply each year.
Pomona College admission requirements for international students: the application
- Application: Common App, Coalition on Scoir or QuestBridge. Pomona has no preference.
- Transcript: official, unofficial or self-reported for review, with official final transcripts if admitted. Non-English transcripts need official English translations. If your secondary school runs only three years, send grade 9 as well.
- School report and counsellor recommendation: a long letter is not expected.
- Two teacher recommendations: from core subjects (English, a foreign language, maths, science or social science). A third, from a coach, employer or elective teacher, is optional.
- Mid-year report: due by 15 February with senior-year grades.
- Pomona essays: a 150-word academic interest statement and a 250-word short response.
- English test: required if English is not the main language of instruction at your school.
- Fee: $80, or the Pomona Access Pass waiver for students with financial hardship who are applying for aid.
You do not need the Common App’s international supplement. Optional interviews are available through InitialView, Vericant or Duolingo. These are run by outside companies, may cost money, and do not replace the English test.
Testing policy
Pomona is test optional. If you report the ACT, include the Science section. Self-reported scores are accepted, and only students who enrol send official reports. Leaving out scores you said you would report can make your file incomplete.
English requirements
| Test | Pomona minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (older 0 to 120 scale) | 100 |
| TOEFL iBT (scale used from January 2026) | 5 (Pomona international page) |
| TOEFL ITP Plus for China | 627 |
| IELTS | 7 |
| Duolingo English Test | 130 |
Pomona sets no minimum sub-scores. Official reports are needed only if you enrol, and a gap between the self-reported and official score can cost you the offer.
Pomona College deadlines for fall 2027 entry
| Round | Apply by | Decision by | Reply by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early Decision I (binding) | 8 November 2026 | 15 December 2026 | 1 January 2027 |
| Early Decision II (binding) | 8 January 2027 | 15 February 2027 | 1 March 2027 |

| Transfer (fall only) | 15 February 2027 | Spring 2027 | Spring 2027 |
Pomona’s pages give the days without a year; the years above follow the fall 2027 cycle. Transcripts and recommendations may arrive a little after the deadline, but Pomona asks for them close to it.
Deadline
Early Decision I closes on 8 November 2026, a week earlier than many peer colleges. Your aid application has to go in with it.
How to write the Pomona supplemental essays, with a sample opening
Pomona asks two questions. The 150-word academic interest statement asks what draws you to the subjects you might major in, or to a passion if you are undecided. The 250-word short response lets you pick one of three prompts: a community you belong to and what you would bring to Pomona; an experience outside the classroom that changed how you think or deal with peers; or how a person or group would describe you.
- Academic statement: name the question you want to study, where it came from and one thing you have already done about it. 150 words leaves no room for a list of majors.
- Short response: choose the prompt that lets you tell a story no other applicant can tell. A small, specific community often works better than a big one.
- Mention the Claremont setting only if it fits: the five-college consortium matters if you want courses or clubs across the colleges, but readers can tell when it is name-dropping.
Sample opening for the academic interest statement, for illustration only:
“Every rainy season, the borehole at my grandmother’s compound turns brown for two weeks. I started testing it with a kit from my school’s lab, and now I want to study chemistry to understand why the readings change before the colour does.”
What happens after you apply
- Portal: Pomona’s applicant portal shows missing documents. Self-report test scores there if you chose to.
- Mid-year report: your counsellor sends it by 15 February 2027.
- Decision: admit, deny or waitlist by 15 December (ED I), 15 February (ED II) or 1 April (RD).
- Aid offer: admitted aid applicants receive their package with or soon after the decision; it sets your eligibility for four years.
- Reply and visa: pay the enrolment deposit by the reply date, then receive your I-20 for the F-1 visa.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Not applying for aid in case you need it later: Pomona will not consider you afterwards.
- Missing the 8 November ED I date: it is earlier than Williams, Swarthmore and Bowdoin.
- Skipping the English test: it is required if your school does not teach mainly in English. Optional interviews do not replace it.
- Forgetting health insurance: international students cannot waive Pomona’s plan.
- Writing a long list in 150 words: one clear academic interest beats five.
- Mixing up Pomona College and Cal Poly Pomona: they are different institutions with different applications.
Costs Pomona aid may not cover
- Your family’s expected contribution, which depends on your CSS Profile or Pomona form.
- English test fees. The Duolingo English Test costs $49, with some waivers through its Access Program.
- Third-party interview fees if you choose InitialView or Vericant.
- The US visa application fee and SEVIS I-901 fee; check the current amounts on official US government sites.
- Flights to Los Angeles and summer living costs.
Majors, campus and city
Pomona offers 48 majors with an average class size of 13. It belongs to the Claremont Colleges, five undergraduate colleges side by side that together enrol more than 6,000 undergraduates, so you can take classes and join clubs across the consortium while living at a much smaller college. Claremont is a small city in Los Angeles County, east of downtown LA, with mountains to the north and a mild, dry climate.
Pomona graduate admissions
Pomona is an undergraduate college and does not offer graduate degrees. If you are looking for a master’s or PhD in Claremont, look at Claremont Graduate University, which is a separate institution with its own admissions.

Other Claremont colleges are on our list too: see Claremont McKenna and Harvey Mudd. For need-blind options, read our Amherst financial aid guide and MIT admission requirements for international students.
Who should apply to Pomona
Apply if you want a small college with big-university options next door, you like the idea of Southern California, and your grades sit at the top of your school. It suits students who know roughly what they want to study and can say why in 150 words.
Be careful if your family needs aid and you are using Pomona as your only reach school, because admission is need-aware for international applicants. Add need-blind colleges such as Amherst or Bowdoin and a few well-funded colleges with higher admit rates.
