Colgate University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Colgate University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Colgate is free for international applicants, has no supplemental essay and meets 100% of need, but its ED I deadline is 1 November. Here are the 20% acceptance rate, 2026-27 costs, English guidance and fall 2027 dates.

Colgate University admission requirements for international students are simple on paper: apply free through the Common App, Coalition on Scoir or QuestBridge, have your school send your transcript, a counselor recommendation and two teacher recommendations, and send a TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score unless your secondary school teaches in English. Colgate sets no minimum score, but successful applicants usually score above 100 on the TOEFL iBT, 7 on IELTS or 130 on Duolingo. SAT and ACT scores are optional, and there is no Colgate-specific essay.

Colgate admitted 20% of 16,774 applicants for the Class of 2030, and international students make up 9% of the student body, from 87 countries. Colgate is need-aware for every applicant, US or international, and meets 100% of demonstrated need for everyone it admits. Early Decision I for fall 2027 closes on 1 November 2026, earlier than at most colleges, and Regular Decision closes on 15 January 2027. I checked these figures on Colgate’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

LocationHamilton, New York, USA
TypePrivate liberal arts university; need-aware for all
Acceptance rate20% (Class of 2030)
DeadlineED I 1 Nov 2026; ED II and RD 15 Jan 2027

Early Decision I closes on 1 November 2026

Colgate’s ED I deadline is two weeks earlier than at most liberal arts colleges. If you want aid, the CSS Profile is due with the application, and the CSS Profile fee waiver request must be in by 1 November too.

Colgate University ranking

U.S. News lists Colgate among National Liberal Arts Colleges, even though it calls itself a university. I could not confirm Colgate’s exact position in the U.S. News 2027 edition, released on 22 September 2026, from a source I could load, so check the U.S. News site for the current number. What matters more for your list is the admit rate: at 20%, Colgate is less selective than Hamilton, Middlebury or Colby, while meeting full need in the same way.

Colgate does not publish a separate acceptance rate for international applicants. Its international page says the university has 299 international students, 9% of the student body, from 87 countries. Applications came from 154 countries for the Class of 2030, so the competition for each international place is wide.

Colgate tuition for international students (2026-27)

This is Colgate’s 2026-27 cost of attendance for an undergraduate, before aid.

Cost item (2026-27)Amount
Tuition$76,828
Student activity fee$462
Housing$10,132
Food (Premier meal plan)$10,008
Books and course materials$1,600
Personal$1,128
Travel (domestic)$800 and up
Total cost of attendance (includes a $50 average loan fee)$101,008
Health insurance (only if not covered by family plan)$1,805

Colgate’s travel figure is for domestic travel. A return flight from Lagos, Nairobi, Accra or Karachi to upstate New York will usually cost much more, so budget for the real fare. Most international families will also pay the $1,805 health insurance charge, since home-country plans rarely meet US college rules.

Colgate scholarships for international students: how aid works

  • Need-aware for everyone: Colgate considers ability to pay for all applicants, US and international. Colgate says its most competitive applicants are admitted whether or not they asked for aid.
  • 100% of need met: Colgate meets the full demonstrated need of every admitted student, including students who need a full package.
  • Need-based aid only: Colgate’s international page describes need-based aid and lists no merit scholarship for international students.
  • Free to apply: the application fee is waived for all non-US citizens.
  • Who counts as international: students without US citizenship. US dual citizens, permanent residents and US citizens living abroad apply as domestic students.

How to apply for Colgate financial aid as an international student

  1. Ask for aid in your application: Colgate reviews aid applications alongside admission.
  2. Complete the CSS Profile online: Colgate does not accept paper or PDF versions. Submit it by your application deadline.
  3. Request a CSS fee waiver if you need one: use the financial aid tab of the Colgate applicant portal once your application is processed. The request deadline is 1 November 2026 for ED I and 22 January 2027 for ED II and Regular Decision.
  4. Watch the portal: the aid office may ask for further documents after reading your Profile.

Colgate’s early decision page lists the ED I aid document deadline as 15 November 2026, while its international page says the CSS Profile is due with the application. I would submit the Profile by 1 November 2026 if you apply ED I, and treat 15 November as the date for any follow-up documents.

InterviewInitialView encouraged for non-native English speakers; Vericant accepted
Early Decision AgreementSigned by you, a parent and your counselor (ED applicants only)

You cannot send your own transcript; it must come from your school, preferably through the Common App or Scoir.

Testing policy

Colgate is test-optional, and students who do not send scores are not at a disadvantage. You can self-report scores, and Colgate superscores. If you are admitted and chose to have scores considered, you must send official reports. With a middle 50% SAT of 1460 to 1530, I would send a score only if it is around 1460 or higher.

English requirements

Colgate has no minimum English score, but successful applicants generally score above 100 on the TOEFL iBT, 7 on IELTS or 130 on Duolingo. A high SAT does not waive the English test. Colgate also encourages non-native speakers to send an InitialView interview, due before 15 January 2027, or before 1 November 2026 for ED I. Its optional Admission Conversations are not evaluated and do not replace either the English test or the interview.

Colgate deadlines for fall 2027 entry

RoundApplication deadlineDecision
Early Decision I (binding)1 November 2026Mid-December 2026
Early Decision II (binding)15 January 2027Mid-February 2027
Regular Decision15 January 2027Late March 2027

Colgate’s pages give these dates without years; the years above follow the fall 2027 cycle. Both Early Decision rounds are binding, so if you are admitted you must withdraw other applications. Only use ED if you are sure you can accept Colgate’s aid offer.

How to stand out at Colgate without a supplemental essay

Colgate has no Colgate-specific essay. The only Colgate section in the Common App is an optional digital presence question, where you can share one to three links with a brief description. That means your personal statement, activities list and optional extras carry your application.

  • Personal statement: write about one experience that shows how you think. A specific story beats a list of awards.
  • Digital presence: share links only if they show work you made, such as a coding project, a published article or a music recording.
  • VIVA research submission: if you have done a formal research project, submit it by 15 November 2026 (ED I) or 1 February 2027 (ED II and RD).
  • Arts portfolio: send visual art, music, theatre or dance through SlideRoom for a $12 fee.
  • Interview: for an international applicant, an InitialView recording lets Colgate hear your spoken English and personality.

A sample personal statement opening, for illustration only:

“The first time I translated for my grandmother at the clinic in Kumasi, I got the word for ‘kidney’ wrong, and the nurse wrote down the wrong complaint.”

The writer could build from there to what they learned about language and health, and why they want to study biology or linguistics.

What happens after you apply

  1. Portal access: Colgate opens your applicant portal, where you track documents and request a CSS fee waiver.
  2. Interview: send your InitialView or Vericant interview before your round’s deadline.
  3. Mid-year grades: your school sends them by 15 February 2027 (ED I applicants are not penalised if they arrive later).
  4. Decision: mid-December for ED I, mid-February for ED II and late March for Regular Decision.
  5. Final transcript: every admitted student must send one after finishing secondary school.
  6. Visa: once you enrol, Colgate issues the I-20 you need for your F-1 visa interview.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Missing the 1 November ED I date because most other colleges use 15 November.
  • Assuming a good SAT replaces the English test. Colgate says it does not.
  • Sending your own transcript or exam certificate. It must come from your school or the exam board.
  • Using a PDF CSS Profile. Colgate accepts only the online version.
  • Expecting merit money. Colgate’s international aid is need-based.
  • Filling the digital presence box with social media. Use it for real work or leave it out.

Costs that aid does not cover

  • International flights beyond Colgate’s $800 domestic travel estimate.
  • Visa, SEVIS and passport fees.
  • English test, InitialView interview and CSS Profile fees if you do not get waivers.
  • Winter clothing. Hamilton is in central New York, where winters are long and snowy.

Graduate admissions at Colgate

Colgate is mainly an undergraduate college, but it runs one graduate programme: a Master of Arts in Teaching. It prepares teachers for certification in childhood education or in secondary English, mathematics, history or science. Colgate covers 80% of MAT tuition and offers paid graduate assistantships of up to 10 hours a week. Applications are due 1 February for the fall cohort and 1 October for the spring cohort, with a $50 fee. The programme is small and competitive and is built around New York State teacher certification, so check how that fits your plans before applying from abroad.

Majors and campus life at Colgate

Colgate has 3,143 students, 57 majors and an 8:1 student-faculty ratio, with an average class size of 17 and 354 full-time faculty. It sits in the village of Hamilton in central New York, a rural setting where most social life happens on campus. International students should expect a small-town experience, with larger cities a drive away.

Colgate has the highest acceptance rate and the latest Regular Decision deadline of these five, which gives you extra time to finish English tests. Colby and Davidson are also free to apply to. Hamilton is another central New York option; see also our Bates College guide.

Who should apply to Colgate

Apply if you want a residential college with many majors, full-need aid and a slightly higher admit rate than the most selective liberal arts colleges. Colgate’s free application and lack of a supplemental essay make it an easy addition to your list, and its 15 January deadline gives Regular Decision applicants room to retake an English test.

It is a weaker fit if you want merit scholarships, a city campus or mild winters. Because Colgate is need-aware, pair it with need-blind options such as Amherst, Yale and MIT, and with full-need colleges from our list of the best American scholarships for international students.
