Davidson College Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Davidson College Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Davidson is need-aware for international applicants but meets 100% of calculated need. Here are the 14.2% acceptance rate, the 2026-27 costs, English and testing rules, the essays and the 15 November 2026 ED I deadline.

Davidson College admission requirements for international students are the same as for US applicants, plus proof of English and a financial form: you apply through the Common App, Coalition Application or QuestBridge, write a personal statement and two short Davidson essays, send two teacher letters, a counselor report and a peer recommendation, and prove English with TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo unless you qualify for a waiver. SAT and ACT scores are optional, and Davidson has permanently waived its $50 application fee.

Davidson is need-aware for applicants who are not US citizens, so asking for aid can affect your chances, but it meets 100% of calculated need for every international student it admits. The class that entered in fall 2026 had a 14.2% acceptance rate, and the Early Decision I deadline for fall 2027 entry is 15 November 2026. I checked every figure below on Davidson’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

Davidson College ranking

U.S. News placed Davidson at #16 among National Liberal Arts Colleges in its 2027 edition, released in September 2026, according to local news coverage of the list. Davidson was the only North Carolina liberal arts college in the top 100, and it tied for #10 on the U.S. News list of most innovative liberal arts colleges. In the previous (2026) edition it was tied for #13.

A ranking says nothing about whether a 2,000-student college in a small town suits you, so read the costs and requirements below before you decide.

Davidson College acceptance rate and class profile

Davidson publishes a profile of each entering class. The figures below are for the Class of 2030, which started in fall 2026. I could not open Davidson’s Common Data Set file, so I have not used CDS numbers here.

Measure (Class of 2030, fall 2026)Figure

SAT Math, middle 50%690 to 760
ACT Composite, middle 50%31 to 34
High schools represented426

Davidson does not publish a separate acceptance rate for international applicants. What it does say is that more than 3,500 international students apply every year from over 80 countries, and that students from more than 50 countries make up about 12% of the campus. Test ranges only cover students who chose to send scores.

Davidson College tuition for international students (2026-27)

International students pay the same prices as everyone else. This is Davidson’s published 2026-27 budget for a first-year student living on campus, before aid.

Cost item (first-year, 2026-27)Amount
Tuition$73,090
Required fees$650
Orientation fee (first year only)$250
Housing$9,220
Food$9,560
Total billed costs$92,770
Books, course materials, supplies and equipment$825
Transportation$200 to $600
Personal expenses$1,400
Total estimated cost of attendance$95,195 to $95,595
Health insurance (listed separately)$2,800

The transport line is a domestic estimate. A return flight from Lagos, Nairobi, Accra or Delhi to Charlotte costs more than $600, so budget for the real fare. Health insurance is also outside the total.

You may have seen news in July 2026 that Davidson is going tuition-free for families earning up to $175,000. That pledge starts with students entering in fall 2027, but Davidson says it covers US citizens living in the US and people with full US residency. International students are not part of it. Your aid comes through the need-based process below.

Davidson scholarships for international students: how aid works

Four rules shape international aid at Davidson.

  • Need-aware admission: Davidson considers ability to pay when it reads applications from non-US citizens. US citizens living abroad are read need-blind.
  • Full need met: Davidson commits to meeting 100% of calculated need for admitted international students. Recruited athletes are funded differently.
  • Apply now or never: you must request aid when you apply for admission. Davidson does not accept aid applications after decisions come out, and none during enrolment.
  • Aid is limited and competitive: Davidson says this plainly on its international aid page. Aid is open to Early Decision and Regular Decision applicants who are first-year students.

Aid packages are made up of grants and on-campus work. Davidson says it has kept loans out of its aid packages for nearly 20 years.

Named scholarships and the Alvarez Scholars Program

Davidson does not run a general merit scholarship competition. It does have a small number of named scholarships, and international first-year applicants can be nominated for or apply to them; some need a separate application. The one built for international students is the Alvarez Scholars Program, a need-based scholarship. Every international student who applies for aid is considered automatically. Davidson does not publish an award amount. Current Alvarez Scholars come from 13 countries, including Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Egypt, India and Peru.

How to apply for Davidson financial aid as an international student

  1. Submit your application: the aid documents appear in your Davidson applicant portal only after you submit the Common App or Coalition Application.
  2. Complete the Financial Verification Form: every international applicant fills this in, even if you are not asking for aid. If you are applying for aid, do it before the CSS Profile.
  3. Choose the right second form: if your family can contribute less than $5,000 a year, Davidson gives you an alternative form in the portal instead of the CSS Profile. If your family can contribute more than $5,000 a year, complete the CSS Profile. Davidson’s aid page lists the Profile fee as $25 and offers no waiver.
  4. Meet the same deadline as your admission round: aid documents are due with your application (15 November, 4 January or 11 January).
  5. Report outside awards: if a government or private scholarship comes through later, send the Outside Resource Notification Form so Davidson can adjust your package.

Davidson does not use the ISFAA. Aid decisions come out with admission decisions for students who meet the deadlines.

Davidson admission requirements for international students: the application

PartWhat Davidson asks for
ApplicationCommon App, Coalition Application or QuestBridge; no fee
Personal statement250 to 650 words
Davidson essay 1“What interests you most about Davidson College?” (250 to 300 words)
Davidson essay 2“What is a topic, activity or idea that excites you? Tell us why.” (250 to 300 words)
School documentsOfficial transcript, Secondary School Report, Mid-Year School Report
Teacher lettersTwo, from different academic teachers; at least one in a core subject
Peer recommendationOne, from a friend, teammate or coworker of similar age
English proficiencyTOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo unless waived
InterviewDavidson does not interview; an InitialView or Vericant video is optional but strongly recommended

Davidson also expects at least 16 high school units: four of English, three of mathematics, two of science, two of history or social studies, and the second level of a language other than English. The average admitted student has 20 units, often with maths through calculus. Davidson tracks demonstrated interest, though it is not required.

Testing policy

Davidson is test-optional. You can self-report SAT or ACT scores, send official ones, or send none. If you enrol, you must send official scores of any test you reported. Only send a score if it sits near or above the middle 50% ranges in the profile table.

English requirements

Davidson accepts TOEFL, IELTS and the Duolingo English Test. It does not set hard minimums, but says students at or above these scores are best prepared: Duolingo 130, IELTS 7, TOEFL iBT 100 (or 5.0 on the new 1 to 6 scale). The SAT and ACT do not count.

  • Waivers: you are usually exempt if English is an official language of your country, if you take IB English A, or if you spent four years of high school in the US. If the waiver is not applied automatically, email admission@davidson.edu with “English Proficiency Waiver” in the subject line.
  • Score delivery: Duolingo scores go from your Duolingo dashboard. TOEFL and IELTS scores must come from the testing agency or your counselor. Self-reported English scores are not accepted.

Davidson deadlines for fall 2027 entry

RoundApplication and aid deadlineDecision released
Early Decision I (binding)15 November 202612 December 2026
Early Decision II (binding)4 January 202730 January 2027
Regular Decision11 January 20271 April 2027
Reply deadline (Regular Decision)1 May 2027Not applicable

Davidson does not offer Early Action. Both early rounds are binding, so if you are admitted with an aid offer you accept, you withdraw your other applications.

Deadline warning

Aid documents share the admission deadline. If you apply Early Decision I on 15 November 2026 without the Financial Verification Form and CSS Profile (or alternative form), Davidson will not consider you for aid later.

How to write the Davidson supplemental essays

You have two essays of 250 to 300 words each. Most applicants waste those words on praise for the college when they need evidence about themselves.

For the “what interests you most about Davidson” essay, write about things only Davidson has. The Honor Code, the Davidson Research Initiative that funds summer research with professors, a specific course or professor in your field, and life in a 2,000-student town outside Charlotte are all fair game. Link each one to something you have already done. If you can swap “Davidson” for another college’s name and the essay still works, rewrite it.

For the “topic, activity or idea that excites you” essay, go narrow. A whole field (“medicine”, “technology”) gives you nothing to say in 300 words. One question, one experiment, one book or one problem in your community works better. Show how you followed the idea: what you read, built or asked next.

Here is a sample opening, for illustration only:

“The borehole pump in our compound failed every dry season, and every year my uncle paid a man to fix the same valve. In SS2 I asked the man to let me watch.”

The scene belongs to this writer alone, and it sets up an idea (cheap engineering fixes for local problems) that the rest of the essay can develop.

What happens after you apply

  1. Portal checks: watch your Davidson applicant portal for the Financial Verification Form and any missing items.
  2. Optional video: if you have not done an InitialView or Vericant session, book one early; Davidson provides no fee waiver for these.
  3. Mid-year grades: your counselor sends the Mid-Year School Report.
  4. Decision and aid together: on-time aid applicants see their aid offer in the portal with the admission decision.
  5. Commit: Early Decision admits withdraw other applications. Regular Decision admits reply by 1 May 2027.
  6. Visa: after you commit, Davidson’s international student office issues the I-20 you need for the F-1 student visa interview.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Not requesting aid at the start: Davidson will not consider aid after decisions, so a family that “will see if we get in first” has closed the door.
  • Self-reporting English scores: Davidson only accepts TOEFL and IELTS from the testing agency or your counselor, and Duolingo from your dashboard.
  • Forgetting the peer recommendation: few colleges ask for one, so applicants leave it until late. Give your peer the exact name and email on your application.
  • Assuming the tuition-free pledge covers you: it is for US citizens and residents.
  • Missing a required unit: no second language at the second level, or too little maths, is a common gap in national curricula. Explain any gap in the additional information section.
  • Sending scores below the range: test-optional means a low score can hurt more than no score.

Costs that aid does not cover

Even a full-need package leaves some costs with you, at least before you arrive:

  • English test fees (TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo); Davidson gives no test fee waivers.
  • InitialView or Vericant interview fees, with no waivers.
  • The CSS Profile fee, if your family’s contribution is above $5,000 a year.
  • Visa application and SEVIS fees, a passport, the visa interview trip and your first flight.
  • Winter clothing; North Carolina winters are mild but still cold for students from the tropics.

Graduate admissions at Davidson

Davidson is an undergraduate college. It does not offer master’s degrees or second bachelor’s degrees, so there is no graduate admission process. If you already hold credits from a degree programme elsewhere, you apply as a transfer student, and international transfer applicants are not eligible for Davidson’s named scholarships.

Majors and campus life at Davidson

Davidson has about 2,000 undergraduates, a 9:1 student-faculty ratio and an average class of 16. It offers 74 majors and minors combined, and students often add a second major or minor. The Honor Code is central to campus life and covers academic work. The college sits in the town of Davidson, about 20 miles north of Charlotte, and fields 21 NCAA Division I teams, unusual for a college this size.

Smith stands out for international families with incomes under $150,000 because its tuition pledge includes them. If you want a need-blind option, read our guides to Amherst College financial aid for international students and MIT admission requirements.

Who should apply to Davidson

Apply if you want small classes, close work with professors and an early start on research, and you can show steady top grades with a full set of core subjects. Davidson suits students who like a tight community and an honour system, and who are happy in a small town with Charlotte about 20 miles away. If you are sure Davidson is your first choice and your family has completed the aid forms, Early Decision is worth a serious look.

It is a weaker fit if you want a large university with graduate schools, or if you need guaranteed funding regardless of admission odds, since aid for international students is need-aware and competitive. I would pair Davidson with need-blind and lower-cost options. Our list of the best American scholarships for international students and our guide to Duke University scholarships are good next reads.
